Artistic translation is one of the most productive types of relation (dialogue, polilogue) of national literatures. In the article the author analyzes the question of national element in the translation of literature into foreign languages. The translations of Maksim Bagdanovich, Rygor Baradulin, Ales Razanav i Vladimir Karatkevich have been taken into consideration. Special attention is devoted to communicative function of artistic translation.

The objective of this text consists in presenting how it is necessary for contemporary translators and interpreters (both literary and specialised) to acquire and develop the ability to recognize elements of identity discourse in translated texts. Nowadays, the need for inter-cultural exchange is inevitably connected with the necessity of establishing harmonious co-existence for numerous cultures and identities. Therefore, it is crucial to educate translators in a way that enables them to pay special attention to identity and cultural perturbations present in translated texts (culture and language hybridisation, multiple identity, cultural dislocation, presence in linguistic and political discourse of minority cultures), regardless of their genre or form. Such a strong emphasis on identity problems in the translation is especially relevant in the European context, where the attention of researchers and politicians directed at identity problems stemming from ethnical and cultural issues sets the framework for a new cultural paradigm that determines the future development of the EU. Becoming acquainted with this paradigm which emphasises fluency, identity unmarkedness and the new model of European collectivity is indispensable for a translator aspiring to become a true cultural mediator.

In the article, the author considers cultural factors which affect the reading of literary work by Swedish and Polish audiences. The piece in question is Underdog by Torbjörn Flygt (2001, translated into Polish by Elżbieta Jasińska-Brunnberg, 2006). Analyzing the setting of the novel in historical narrative about the Swedish welfare state, the authors poses questions regarding universal or hermetic nature of Flygt’s novel.

Assessing the success of a translated text is one of the controversial topics often discussed in the field of translation studies. The definition of a so-called successful translation is itself controversial. Therefore, for the purpose of this study, the success of a given translation may be defined as transmitting a similar, though rarely identical, semantic frame reference in the Target Language (TL) as was intended by the Source Language (SL) and may be quantified by comparing alternate translations and choosing the one with the highest number of equivalent frame references. One of the factors which could be considered detrimental to the production of a successful translation, as defined above, is the (un)translatability of cultural terms. Cultural terms, defined here as expressions referring to concepts or entities that are unique to a certain culture, are believed to be untranslatable. This paper uses Arabic visual frames referencing the Egyptian garment ǧal-labiy-ya (or ǧilbāb) as an example and argues that (un)translatability can be quantified using semantic frames based on the assumption that all SL terms have multiple frame references, some of which, mostly the ones indicating denotative meaning, have parallels in the TL while some others, mostly the ones indicating connotative meaning, do not. The degree of (un)translatability may, therefore, be quantifiable by observing which TL terms possess a higher rate of similar frame references in SL, which aids in the evaluation of translated texts in terms of relative equivalence and the degree to which the Target Text (TT) audience receives similar information to that received by the Source Text (ST) audience.

The article “Polish-Russian War under”… green-white-red flag is devoted to the analysis of the Italian translation of Dorota Masłowska’s first novel. The author of the essay concentrates mainly on translator’s lexical choices, as well as briefly overviews selected efforts made by the translator. The article does not pretend to be a complete characteristic of the translation but is rather an attempt to partly answer the question of how much of this “artistically broken Polish” novel remains in the Italian version.

Niniejszy artykuł stanowi analizę porównawczą wybranych toponimów w grze wideo The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim w językach angielskim i rosyjskim. Główny nacisk kładziony jest na aspekt semantyczny, w szczególności na różnice semantyczne. W pierwszej części artykułu wyjaśniono typowe strategie tłumaczeniowe w tłumaczeniu gier wideo, w tym aspekty specyficzne dla The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim oraz ogólnie dla gier. Druga część to analiza porównawcza wybranych toponimów w grze. Autorka komentuje opcje tłumaczeniowe i analizuje ich adekwatność, uwzględniając zarówno aspekty semantyczne, jak i kulturowe.  
This paper is a comparative analysis of selected toponyms in the video game The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim in English and Russian. The main focus is on the semantic aspect, and in particular on semantic differences. The first part of the article explains typical translation strategies in video game translation, including specific aspects of The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim and for games in general. The second part serves as a comparative analysis of selected toponyms in the game. The author comments on the translation options and analyzes their adequacy taking into account both the semantic and cultural aspects.   
Данная статья представляет собой сравнительный анализ отдельных топонимов в игре The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim. Основное внимание уделяется семантическому аспекту, а в частности семантическим различиям. Первая часть статьи объясняет типичные стратегии перевода видеоигр, включая аспекты специфические для The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim. Вторая часть посвящена сравнительному анализу отдельных топонимов в игре. Автор комментирует варианты перевода и анализирует их адекватность.

Translators’ and interpreters’ social and cultural competences allow them to discuss encounters between law enforcement officers and Muslims and point out the weaknesses in these relations. The aim of the article is to explore the role of interpreters and translators as (inter)cultural mediators in Police/Border Guards’ encounters with Muslims. The study used qualitative methodology and semi-structured individual interviewing with six translators/interpreters to derive answers to the following research questions: What roles do interpreters and translators play as (inter)cultural mediators? What additional tasks do they perform? What is the experience of the interpreters and the translators with assisting the Police and the Border Guard officers during interactions with the Muslim population? What is the impact of the anti-Muslim sentiment and officers’ attitudes towards Islam on these contacts from the perspective of the responders?
Tłumacze, dzięki posiadanym kompetencjom społecznym i kulturowym, potrafią scharakteryzować relację funkcjonariuszy służb mundurowych z osobami wyznania muzułmańskiego i wskazać słabości tej relacji. Celem autorów artykułu jest zatem omówienie roli tłumaczy jako mediatorów kulturowych w relacjach funkcjonariuszy Policji i Straży Granicznej z muzułmanami. Badanie zrealizowano z wykorzystaniem metody jakościowej – indywidualnego wywiadu częściowo ustrukturyzowanego z sześcioma tłumaczami. W artykule zawarto odpowiedzi na następujące pytania badawcze: Jakie role odgrywają tłumacze jako (między) kulturowi mediatorzy? Jakie dodatkowe zadania wykonują? Jakie są doświadczenia tłumaczy w asystowaniu funkcjonariuszom Policji i Straży Granicznej w kontaktach z muzułmanami? Jaki jest wpływ nastrojów antymuzułmańskich i postaw funkcjonariuszy wobec islamu na te kontakty z perspektywy respondentów?

Opis:
The knowledge on translation, which was developed by different methodologies and different disciplines, fulfills the need of taking into consideration the structurally-artistic issues by comparative literary studies, most basic for literature and literary studies, occupying the central place in comparative literature. This shift in comparative interests is accompanied by a revealing lack of works undertaking research into developmental-typological regularities in general literature. Moreover, with the central position of translation in this discipline, it is paradoxical that resigning from text and its subject matter in favour of reception and the results of functioning of translation in the target culture has been declared. While the dislike for systemizing and typologizing facts of general literature is doubly hard because of the disapproval of dogmatic theories and the difficulties within research into the abundance of literary material, the target, the place, the circumstances and the way of functioning in time and in culture are inherent parts of the linguistically-artistic structure, that is, everything that is within interests of the contemporary culturally oriented literary studies.

Linguistic conceptualization of time in Tyniec translation of the Bible This article attempts to characterise various verbal connections with the word time in Tyniec translation of the Bible. Expressions with the word time give ample material, allowing for multi-linguistic analysis, it is more than 800 examples of the word time (684 in the Old Testament and 160 in the New Testament), after taking account of other word units associated with the determination of time, it is more than 4,000 word units. Expressions with the word time in Polish edition of the Bible reflect the mind-set and culture, manifested in the Polish language, of course, inextricably linked with the biblical Semitic motivations. Time in the Bible is thus conceptualized as a measurable physical quantity, synthesizing different units of measure: size, length, but also the weight (e.g. hard times), a certain continuity of religious events focused on eternity and as a sacred cycle. The clearest expression seems to be the right time, understood as a convenient, appropriate moment.

Celem artykułu jest przedstawienie problemów przekładoznawczych w procesie tłumaczenia realiów kulturowych z języka polskiego na język słoweński. Zakres analizy ograniczono do aspektów związanych z życiem codziennym za czasów PRL. Za materiał posłużyła powieść Lubiewo M. Witkowskiego, przetłumaczona na język słoweński przez B. Kerna. Rozważaniom przekładoznawczym towarzyszy refleksja nad przydatnością przedstawionego materiału w nauczaniu języka polskiego jako obcego.
The aim of the article is to present the problems in the process of translating cultural issues from the Polish language into the Slovene language. The analysis is focused on the aspects of everyday life in the times of communism in Poland. The examples were excerpted from the Slovene translation of the novel Lubiewo by M. Witkowski. The translation into Slovene has been made by B. Kern. A part of the article combines the presented material with the glottodidactic aspects.

Napetost med označenim in označujočim, ki je značilna tako za posamezne znake kot za znakovne verige, je tudi v prevodih vzrok za večje ali manjše semantične zamike. Dokler ostajamo v mejah jezika, lahko take odmike od izvirnika klasificiramo in razmeroma natačno opišemo, in sicer ne glede na to, ali se nanašajo na slovnično, leksikalno ali na skladenjsko ravnino. Subjektivne odločitve prevajalca postanejo veliko pomembnejše takrat, ko prestopimo meje jezika in sopostavimo dve zunajjezikovni resničnosti. Največja pa je vloga prevajalca v procesu, ki se ga sam samo delno zaveda — v procesu konkretizacije. Konkretizacijo, to je zavedno ali nezavedno zapolnjevanje vrzeli v shematični besedni umetnini, v prevedenem besedilu še pred bralcem opravi prevajalec, zato ravno prevajalec bistveno vpliva na videze, ki jih izzove besedna umetnina.
The tension between the signifiant and the signifié, which is present in both singular signs and chains thereof, is also the cause of various semantic incoherencies in translation. Within the boundaries of a language, one can classify and describe such departures from the original, regardless of whether they arise in the grammatical, lexical or syntactic sphere. The subjective decisions of the interpreter become much more important whenever one transcends the boundaries of language and compares two metalinguistic realities. But the greatest role of the interpreter lies within a process of Ingarden’s “concretization” understood as a conscious or unconscious filling of gaps in a schematic literary artwork, which forms an integral part of the sphere of competence of the interpreter of a translated work. Therefore, it is the interpreter who exerts a decisive influence on the perceptions, created by literary artwork.

Opis:
The article focuses on ways of expressing sadness in Russian and Polish, particularly on the features of the linguo-cultural concept of ТОСКА, which is difficult to express in translation. Selected translation decisions are analysed of quotations from literary classics from various epochs, such as Maria Dąbrowska, Jarosław Iwaszkiewicz or Aleksander Wat – as translators of Chekhov. Some examples from Old Russian and Romantic epochs are discussed too in Julian Tuwim’s translation into Polish and Wilhelm Lewik’s into Russian. It is confirmed that for some concepts, such as ТОСКА, ДУША, СУДЬБА, no corresponding ones exist in other languages and other linguo-cultural equivalents need to be proposed.

Opis:
Celem artykułu jest omówienie zjawiska tłumacza jako drugiego autora w kontekście przekładu literatury dziecięcej. Wraz z nadejściem zwrotu kulturowego w badaniach nad przekładem tłumacz – do tej pory zmuszony do zachowania jak największej transparentności podczas swojej pracy – ujawnił się, a jego widoczność w tłumaczonym tekście nie jest już utożsamiana z nieudanym przekładem. Czasem tłumacz manifestuje swoją obecność w tekście w sposób skrajny, pozwalając sobie na liczne ingerencje, które prowadzą wręcz do zmiany oryginału, a jego samego umiejscawiają na pozycji drugiego autora. Literatura dziecięca wydaje się być odpowiednim gruntem dla analizy tego problemu, gdyż od jej tłumaczy, podobnie jak od jej twórców, wymaga się postawienia się na pozycji młodego czytelnika, a także dostosowania przekładu do licznych norm rządzących tą gałęzią piśmiennictwa w docelowym systemie literackim.  Tekstem należącym do literatury dziecięcej, w którym tłumacz stawia się na pozycji drugiego autora jest najnowszy polski przekład utworu Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland Lewisa Carrolla. Tłumacz, Grzegorz Wasowski, pozwala sobie na liczne ingerencje w przekładanym tekście, prowadzące do znacznej zmiany utworu Carrolla znanego polskim czytelnikom z dotychczasowych tłumaczeń.
The aim of the article is to present the phenomenon of the translator as a second author within the context of children’s literature translation. With the cultural turn in translation studies, the translator, who up until this point had adhered to the common norms preferring the transparency of the translated text, became visible and this visibility is no longer deemed a failure. Sometimes, the translator manifests his or her presence in a text in a more extreme manner, introducing a number of changes, which can lead to a significant modification of the original text and which place him or her in the position of the second author. Children’s literature seems to be a proper background for the analysis of this problem since its translators, similarly to its authors, are expected to put themselves in the place of a young reader as well as to adjust the translated text to the norms governing the target literary system. A text which belongs to children’s literature, in which the translator assumes the role of the second author, is the newest Polish rendition of Lewis Carroll’s Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland. The translator, Grzegorz Wasowski, introduces numerous changes to the translated text, which result in a significant modification of the book known to the Polish readers through numerous past translations.
