Focusing on the work of Yemenite “ethnic” dance companies in Israel, this article aims to understand how issues such as a shift in collective representations come to be invested into dance practices. In other words, it discusses how artistic creation and identity reconfigurations happen to associate in a dance form, and how an ethnographic study of dance practices and their contexts of performance may be a valuable way of accessing the dynamics of self-positioning of a group within the surrounding society. Linking together “classical” ethnography, analysis of dance products, and socio-political contextualisation, the present analysis shows that the articulation of two apparently contradictory ways of building these companies’ repertoire allows Yemenite dancers, choreographers, and also internal audience, to assume in one single dance form a sense of “being Yemenite” whilst not giving up the national dimension of their Israeli identity.

Se analizaron 27 monumentos eucarísticos del Jueves Santo en iglesias colombianas desde 2004 a 2017 cada dos años. En estas construcciones se identifi có la expresión de la estética kitsch por medio de un análisis iconográfico de las estructuras simbólicas ancladas a las superficies visuales de los objetos que se presentan en los monumentos y de los materiales usados en su construcción. El kitsch religioso no tiene el propósito de suscitar reflexión intelectual en el público, más bien su fin es emocional, apela al poder y al fervor de la tradición religiosa que, en el marco del Jueves Santo, lo envuelve todo. El kitsch religioso no tiene propósitos intelectuales, los objetos están ahí y su presencia es suficiente, es por esto que los monumentos del Jueves Santo son apreciados por los sentimientos profundos de devoción que generan en los asistentes. Los monumentos eucarísticos apartan de la realidad tanto al creyente cotidiano como al practicante eventual y remontan a los episodios que se narran a través de su carácter palimpsestual y la metonimia emocional y efímera.

The article is devoted to the research of the motif of deception in the fairy‑tales of the Polish and Ukrainian writer S. Ostashevskyi. The work offers arguments for the topicality of the research as well as for the choice of the analysis methodology. It also emphasizes the significance of studying the author’s creative works with a view to revealing those connections between Ukrainian and Polish culture which indisputably prove their kinship. Four types of the deception motif have been distinguished based on the collections of fairy‑tales Half‑a‑Kopa Fairy‑Tales for the Little World and Half‑a‑Hundred Fairy‑Tales for Jolly People. These types are as follows: “a creature with superpowers deceives people by appearing in front of them in an anthropomorphous, intentionally inferior, everyday image”, “an infernal character takes people in without changing its image but promising material benefits and solutions to people’s life problems in exchange for their own souls or their children’s souls”, “a person (usually, a woman) deceives/tries to deceive an infernal character or some supreme forces in general”, and “a person deludes another person”. The comparison of this material with the corresponding folklore and literary heritage has defined the specificity of using and transforming the deception motif by S. Ostashevskyi: dependence on the expression of the religious idea, comical play such as appears in the 19th‑century burlesque and travesty art, and reflection on the harmonious combination of Ukrainian and Polish folklore traditions.

This article aims to present the main problems related to the representation of North American Indians and the management of their cultural heritage. Particular attention will be given to the Ganondagan State Historic Site run by the Seneca community. The critical methodology of research on visuality was used in the analysis of the exhibition.

The article compares some algorithm for object comparison, that can be used for searching 3D objects in database. There are tested: basic D2, TH, and EGI algorithms. The algorithms use histograms as descriptors of 3D shape. The techniques were tested using cultural heritage objects and objects from Shape Princeton Benchmark. Additional test use the same object represented with different accuracy. The tests give us conclusions about the restricted usefulness of the algorithms and suggest the important parameters for searching in database.
Artykuł prezentuje wyniki trzech serii testów, które przeprowadzono dla sprawdzenia możliwości wykorzystania algorytmów D2, TH i EGI w zastosowaniu do rozpoznawania przestrzennych modeli obiektów dziedzictwa kulturowego w bazie danych takich obiektów. Algorytm D2 opiera się na porównywaniu histogramów długości połączeń między punktami na powierzchni obiektów. Dla każdego obiektu, po jego przeskalowaniu (sprowadzeniu do wspólnych wymiarów) wyznaczamy zadaną liczbę punktów na powierzchni. Punkty są wyznaczane losowo, przy czym zakładamy stałą gęstość rozkładu. Histogram długości tworzony jest dla wszystkich par punktów. W pierwszej serii testów wykorzystano także wariant algorytmu D2, który opiera się na histogramie odległości punktów powierzchniowych od środka ciężkości obiektu. Algorytm TH (ang. thickness histogram) stanowi wariant algorytmu D2 i opiera się na histogramie iloczynów wektorowych odcinków łączących punkty powierzchniowe (wyznaczane jak w przypadku algorytmu D2), oraz normalnych do odpowiadających im powierzchni. W przypadku EGI (ang. Extended Gaussian Image) wyznacza się powierzchnię obiektu odpowiadającą danej orientacji - stanowi to odpowiednik histogramu dla określonej liczby orientacji (wektorów normalnych, wyznaczonych na sferze gaussowskiej). We wszystkich wariantach algorytmów porównanie histogramów wykonywane jest za pomocą metody EMD (ang. Earth Mover's Distance), której zaletą jest odporność na drobne błędy w przeskalowaniu obiektów (dla algorytmów D2 i TH). W przypadku pierwszej serii testów porównano także inne techniki wyznaczania odległości między histogramami (odległość euklidesową, zsumowaną euklidesową, oraz Manhattan) - odległości euklidesowa i zsumowana euklidesowa nie wykazały jednak znacząco lepszych wyników pracy niż EMD, która powinna cechować się większą odpornością na błędy przeskalowania obiektów, odległość zaś Manhattan okazała się miarą znacząco gorszą. W pierwszej serii testów przeanalizowano odległości wyznaczone dla trzech koralików pochodzących z naszyjnika będącego znaleziskiem archeologicznym, pochodzą-cym z kręgu kultury łużyckiej. Testy wykazały, że wszystkie trzy warianty algorytmu D2 pozwalają poprawnie rozpoznać rozpoznawać obiekty, przy czym wykorzystanie odległości od środka ciężkości prowadzi do ograniczeń dokładności (co częściowo rekompensuje niższą złożonością obliczeniową, rosnącą liniowo wraz z liczbą punktów). Wyniki testów algorytmu TH sugerowały możliwość wykorzystania go dla realizacji zadania klasyfikacji. Testy wykazały także, że jakość odpowiedzi (tj. różnica między najgorszymi spasowaniami obiektu ze swoimi kopiami i z obiektami innymi, pozwalająca na określenie wartości progowej dla rozpoznania obiektu) rośnie wraz z liczbą wykorzystanych punktów powierzchniowych. W przypadku algorytmu EGI nie osiągnięto podobnych wyników - wszystkie rodzaje koralików różniły się w podobnym stopniu. Drugą serię testów przeprowadzono na danych pochodzących z bazy Shape Princeton Benchmark, a ich celem było sprawdzenie możliwości wykorzystania algorytmu TH dla podziału bazy danych na klasy. Uzyskane wyniki nie potwierdziły takiej możliwości, choć przeglądy bazy (rys. 8-10) wskazały na pewne rozróżnienie grup obiektów. Należy jednak zauważyć, że ze względu na rozmiar bazy (1815 obiektów) i jej zróżnicowanie (złożoność od 16 do 316498 trójkątów) ograniczono liczbę wykorzystanych punktów do maksymalnie 6000. Analiza możliwości klasyfikacji przy wykorzystaniu technik TH i D2 wymaga więc dalszych prac. Podobne wyniki uzyskano przy pomocy algorytmu EGI, przy czym listy najbardziej podobnych obiektów różniły się w przypadku algorytmu EGI i D2, co może sugerować wykorzystanie złożenia obu algorytmów do stworzenia bardziej złożonego deskryptora. Celem trzeciej serii testów była weryfikacja wpływu jakości reprezentacji siatki na uzyskane wyniki. Testy potwierdziły, że algorytmy D2 i EGI poprawnie radzą sobie z różnicami między różnymi reprezentacjami tego samego obiektu (różniącymi się liczbą trójkątów, a co za tym idzie także cechującymi się pewnym zróżnicowaniem kształtu), podczas gdy algorytm TH okazał się wrażliwy na takie zmiany, co przy testowej liczbie punktów (maksymalnie 12000) czyni go nieprzydatnym dla porównań. Przypuszczalnym powodem takiego zróżnicowania jest większy, w przypadku algorytmu TH, wpływ nachylenia trójkątów powierzchni na uzyskane rezultaty. Artykuł kończy podsumowanie, ukazujące jednocześnie kierunki dalszych potencjalnych prac - analizy technik klasyfikacji przy wykorzystaniu większej liczby punktów dla utworzenia histogramu oraz do testów porównań fragmentów powierzchni z kompletnymi obiektami.

The article explores the use and importance of taking a biographical approach to conducting participatory action research (PAR) with asylum seekers and refugees in order to: better understand lived experiences of exile and belonging; contribute to the important field of Biographical Sociology; provide a safe space for stories to be told; and in turn for these stories to feed in to policy and praxis. The authors’ combined work on the asylum-migration nexus, the politics of representation and participatory action research methodology (PAR) as ethno-mimesisi argues for the use of biography to contribute to cultural politics at the level of theory, experience and praxis, and is constitutive of critical theory in praxis. PAR research undertaken with Bosnian refugees in the East Midlands and Afghan refugees in London will be the focus around which our analysis develops. We develop a case for theory building based upon lived experience using biographical materials, both narrative and visual, as critical theory in practice towards a vision of social justice that challenges the dominant knowledge/power axis embedded in current governance and media policy relating to forced migration. The dominant power/knowledge axis related to forced migration is embedded in current (New Labour) governance and re-presented in some media texts as identified below. New Labour governance is symbolised in the competing discourses of a) strong centralised control and b) more open systems, network and partnership based governance (Newman, 2003: 17-23; Clarke, 2004; Lewis, 2000). Open systems are made up of partnerships and networks – “joined up government”, “that transcends the vertical, departmental structures of government itself” (Newman, 2003: 20). to develop or foster a consensual style of governing. Progressive governance is defined by Newman (2003:15) as involving a significant shift from governance through hierarchy and competition to governance through networks and partnerships with an emphasis upon inclusion. Progressive governance involves the production of techniques and strategies of responsibilisation of citizens operationalised through the development of networks, alliances, and partnerships, with a strong focus upon active citizenship. Thus, spreading responsibility for social control to non state agencies and “communities” (Garland, 2001). In relation to forced migration/asylum discourses around the exclusion of the “other” (involving criminalisation, detention and deportation) and the maintenance and control of borders (developing ever more tighter controls on entry and asylum applications) exist in tension with discourses that speak of human rights, responsibilities and possibilities for multi-cultural citizenship especially in the community cohesion literature. There is a conflict at the heart of New Labour’s approach to asylum policy linked to the “alterity” of the asylum seeker that promulgates hegemonic ideologies and discourses around rights to belonging and citizenship, perceived access to resources (redistribution) and misrecognition fostering suspicion of the “stranger”. Alongside discourses of fairness and rights to enter and seek refuge, there exist regressive discourses that water down the vitally important actual and symbolic 1951 UN convention, and foster a split between “bogus” and “genuine” refugees, making it extremely hard to seek asylum in the UK.

Ostentacyjne przywoływanie patriotyzmu i narodowych symboli, ich polityczna instrumentalizacja i indoktrynacja odbywają się dziś w atmosferze permanentnego sporu tożsamościowego. Rezerwuar postaci i symboli historycznych dostarcza jego obu stronom instrumentów do manifestacji swoich idei i reprodukcji podstawowej antropologicznej dychotomii: „my” versus „oni”. Historyczne analogie służą usprawiedliwianiu obywatelskiego nieposłuszeństwa, a pamięć zbiorowa jest powszechnie włączana w repertuar praktyk kontestacyjnych, szczególnie przez przedstawicieli młodego pokolenia, którzy skutecznie korzystają z nowych technologii komunikacyjnych i kodów popkultury. Dążąc do ustanowienia własnej reprezentacji symbolicznej, przechwytują postawy i narzędzia reprezentowane przez oficjalny dyskurs pamięci, dekonstruują narodowe mity i obalają uprzywilejowane wzorce patriotyzmu. Artykuł ukazuje, w jaki sposób „turpopatriotyzm” i „softpatriotyzm” stały się osiami polskiej debaty o symbolicznym głównym nurcie i peryferiach, a także, jak młodzi Polacy podważają hegemoniczne wzorce świadomości historycznej.
Currently, ostentatious evocation of patriotism and national symbols, their political instrumentalization and indoctrination exists in an atmosphere of permanent identity dispute. The reservoir of historical figures and emblems provides its both sides with instruments to manifest their ideas and multiply the basic anthropological dichotomy: ‘we’ versus ‘they’. Historical analogies are used to justify civil disobedience. Collective memory is commonly included in the repertoire of contestation practices, especially by the members of young generation, effectively using new communication technologies and codes of pop culture. Striving to establish their own symbolic representation, they intercept the attitudes and tools represented by the official memory discourse, they deconstruct national myths, and subvert privileged patriotic patterns. The article presents how so-called ‘turbopatriotism’ and ‘softpatriotism’ become the axis of Polish debate about the symbolic mainstream and periphery and how young Poles discredit hegemonic patterns of historical awareness.

In different ways, the movies rearticulate the relationship between Italy and the United States. In showing how Italians can beat Americans at sports, how they can indulge in conspicuous consumption and finally how even the United States are not alien to provincialism and backwardness, these movies express a new mood of confidence that was widely felt in Italian society at the time. However, these movies came at a moment when the Italian film industry was on the verge of its decline. Starting from the 1980s, in fact, American movies and distributors would colonize the Italian movie market and depress the Italian movie industry.

Zostały one przedstawione chronologicznie od czasów Imperium Osmańskiego po współczesne relacje Państwa Tureckiego z mniejszością kurdyjską. Dzieje aktywizmu kurdyjskiego w Turcji opisane są z perspektywy uznającej zmagania polityczne Kurdów za dążenie do obrony własnej tożsamości kulturowej i odpowiedź na politykę asymilacyjną państwa. Przedstawiono kontekst i przebieg najważniejszych wydarzeń związanych z: funkcjonowaniem księstw kurdyjskich w Imperium Osmańskim, powstaniami kurdyjskimi na początku istnienia Republiki, wyłonieniem się nowej kurdyjskiej klasy politycznej w latach sześćdziesiątych XX wieku, działalnością partyzancką Partii Pracujących Kurdystanu (PKK) oraz procesem pokojowym prowadzonym w XXI wieku. Uwzględniono współczesne oceny wydarzeń historycznych przez Kurdów i Turków, kładąc nacisk na różnice w ocenie traktatów z Sèvres i Lozanny. W końcowej części artykułu poruszono problematykę najnowszych wydarzeń związanych z relacjami pomiędzy rządem tureckim a mniejszością kurdyjską oraz przedstawiono prognozy przyszłości procesu pokojowego.
The article analyzes changes in political representation of Kurds in Turkey, which are presented chronologically from the times of Ottoman Empire to the modern relations between Turkish state and Kurdish minority. The history of Kurdish activism in Turkey is described from the perspective which considers Kurdish political struggle as efforts to preserve they cultural identity and response to assimilation policy of the state. Presented are context and course of major events related to: functioning of the Kurdish principalities in the Ottoman Empire, Kurdish uprisings at the beginning of the Republic, the emergence of a new Kurdish political class in the sixties of the twentieth century, guerrilla activity Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) and peace process in the XXI century . Discussed were also contemporary differences in evaluation of historical events, with an emphasis on the differences in the assessment of the Treaties of Sèvres and Lausanne. Final part of the article deals with the issue of the latest developments related to the relationship between the Turkish government and the Kurdish minority.
