    Autorzy prezentują materiał etnograficzny zgromadzony przez kilkanaście lat obserwowania życia społeczności Bergitka Roma i ich nieromskiego otoczenia w jednej z karpackich wsi. Głównym przedmiotem analizy są zmiany praktyk językowych i sposobów odnoszenia się do Romów zachodzące u pracowników oświaty, urzędników i lokalnych decydentów, mających kontakt z mieszkańcami romskiej osady. Zgromadzony materiał pokazuje, w jaki sposób lokalne relacje Romów z nieromskim otoczeniem są kształtowane przez koordynowaną na poziomie unijnym politykę integracji Romów. Tekst ma charakter studium przypadku relacji między ekspansją nowego oficjalnego języka, używanego do opisu sytuacji Romów i interakcji społeczeństwa większościowego z nimi, a utrzymywaniem się negatywnych postaw na poziomie lokalnej społeczności.
    The authors present ethnographic material gathered over several years of observing the life of the community Bergitka Roma and their non-Romani environment in the Carpathian village. The main object of the analysis are changing linguistic practices and ways of referring to Roma among education professionals, officials and local decision-makers who come into contact with the inhabitants of Roma settlements. The collected material shows how relations of local Roma community with non-Roma environment are shaped by policy of the Roma integration coordinated on the EU-level. The text is a case study of the relationship between the expansion of the new official language, used to describe the situation of the Roma and interaction of the majority population with them and the persistence of negative attitudes of the local community.

    The results of the referendum on leaving the European Union by Great Britain have surprised experts from the world of politics, business analysts and immigrant community which functions in the British Isles. British people have decided, by a majority of votes, to shape the future of the UK outside the structures of the European Union. What does this choice mean for the community of Polish immigrants, which numbers almost one million people, working in the United Kingdom? Does Brexit and its consequences constitute a threat to Poles? The aim of this article is to analyse the economic, social and cultural effects of leaving the European Union by Great Britain, from the perspective of the Polish community in the British Isles.

    Opis:
    Spreewald Forest. (On) The Smallest Slavonic People – The Sorbs and Wends Upper and Lower Lusatia with mountains in the Southern border region with the Czech Republic (Bohemia) and the natural and cultural water landscapes of the Spreewald Forest are the native lands of the Slavonic Sorbs and Wends with a unique history, language, and culture. The ancestor of the Sorbs and Wends came here in the 6th century, and both peoples are closely related to their Western Slavonic brethren, the Czechs and Poles. In their complicated history they had to experience persecution, assimilation, and displacement, language prohibition, deportation, and even extermination included. In their home regions the Sorbs have the right to speak Sorabian/Wendish today, in public, at school, and at court as well. The increasing industrialization provokes more and more calls and activities for the preservation of the unique scenery, and language and culture of the Sorbian minority. The maintenance of the rich culture, customs and traditions of the Sorbs and Wends was and is still an important aspect for their future existence, and self-preservation. They are kept alive in many regions, across language and cultural barriers. General knowledge on this ethnic and cultural minority is in Germany often reduced to customs and mere folklore. Although many Sorbs and Wends are Christians today, most of their cultural heritage, customs and legends are of pagan-originated, a challenging, and interesting offer. The rich culture, lively customs and traditions make the bilingual region a unique, interesting, and attractive place for many visitors that can experience a lot in the triangle border region of Saxony, Bohemia, and Silesia. They may follow the ancient trade route Via Regia as well as the holy route Via Sacra connecting the Lusatia region with important historic and cultural destinations in Poland and the Czech Republic. Interested guest may experience traditions alive, for instance they might follow the traces of Krabat, also called the “Wendish Faust” and main character of the most popular Sorabian/Wendish legend coming from this area. Traditions are part of a well-preserved history and cultural heritage, and they are an integrating practice in modern life of this region, and in policy, too.

    The process that started with a demonstration against the regime on 15 March 2011 spurred by desire to reform Dera/Syria quickly turned into a civil war. The resulting forced immigration presented Turkey with the challenge of one of history’s largest immigration movements. Turkey adopted open door policy towards Syrians and gave them temporary protection status. Thus the Syrians were considered to be guests of Turkey until they could return to their homeland. However, internal disturbances in Syria became increasingly complex and the Syrians’ stay turned into a long-term one. As the case of Şanlıurfa city demonstrates, there are significant cultural differences between the Syrian immigrants and the indigenous people, which include clothing, traditions, customs, attitudes and behaviours. They make integration of both peoples difficult and cause a serious cultural clash between the local people and the Syrians in the city. These emerging problems inspired this research, which aims to showcase the problems of socio-cultural integration of the Syrians through a case study of Şanlıurfa city and to examine the factors underlying these problems.

    Polityka radiofoniczna III Rzeszy wobec Polski w czasach okupacji stanowi część strategii dyskryminacji i kulturalnej eksterminacji. Ale była też pełna nieoczekiwanych zwrotów wynikających z nieustających sporów wokół jej pryncypiów. Zdumiewa konsekwentna postawa Hansa Franka, który domagał się dla Generalnej Guberni nie tylko odrębnej niemieckojęzycznej radiofonii, ale również szerokiego spektrum audycji w języku polskim. Nie udało mu się do tego przekonać władz w Berlinie.
    The Third Reich’s radio policy towards Poland during the occupation was part of the discrimination and cultural extermination strategy. But it was also full of unexpected twists and turns, resulting from constant disputes over its principles. One is astonished by the consistent attitude of Hans Frank. He demanded not only a separate German-language radio station for the General Government but also a broad spectrum of broadcasts in Polish. He failed in convincing the authorities in Berlin to agree to this idea.

    Institutional discrimination against women in Poland is a social problem that persists despite constitutional guarantees of gender equality and legislation providing for compensatory measures. The article analyzes the possibility of using M. Marody’s concept of the “brave victim” as a means of designing compensatory actions in legislation and enforcement that will help eliminate institutional discrimination. Institutional discrimination is defined in legal doctrine as discrimination that occurs at the level of a given institution, organization, or even society as a whole.The article also analyzes cultural and social factors that condition or contribute to the deepening of legal and social inequality for women. The article identifies areas of institutional discrimination in Poland, including: the labor market, parental rights, social rights, access to political functions, and increasing women’s participation in public life.The analysis of national legal regulations and regulations implemented from EU law indicates the heterogeneity of protection against discrimination. The article proposes conditions and principles for the application of special legal solutions that establish anti-discrimination standards applicable in the current social conditions in Poland.The concept of the “brave victim” is a social fact that the legislator should take into account when designing policy law to avoid social tensions and develop effective legal solutions to counter discrimination.
