Opis:
Historians have relied for too long on written sources (the letters that Pope Martin I wrote from Cherson, as well as De Administrando Imperio) to assess the economic situation in the Crimea, especially in Cherson, during the so-called Dark Ages (7th to 9th centuries). Many still believe that that city could not have survived without shipments of grain from the outside, particularly from the lands along the southern coast of the Black Sea. Seals of Byzantine officials found in Cherson tell a different story, as they indicate commercial exchanges between the Crimea and Constantinople. If the peninsula participated in trade, something must have been offered in exchange for the goods coming from the Capital. The archaeological evidence strongly suggests that during the 8th and 9th centuries, the hinterland of Cherson, as well as the Kerch Peninsula (eastern Crimea) witnessed rapid economic development, largely based on the cultivation of crops. Silos found on several settlement sites, both open and fortified, suggest a surplus, which was most likely commercialized. If so, the closest markets were across the Black Sea, to the south, primarily in Constantinople. Other commodities, such as wine transported in amphorae, traveled in the opposite direction, across the Sea of Azov and into the interior of Khazaria. In exchange, the peninsula received shipments of grain, which were then re-exported to Constantinople. Far from relying on shipments of grain from the Capital, Cherson and the rest of the Crimean Peninsula in fact supplied Constantinople with food. Numerous vats for the production of fish sauce have been found in Cherson, and many were in operation before 900. A good deal of the garum served at tables in Constantinople between the 7th and the 9th century must have come from Cherson. The archaeological evidence therefore calls for a re-assessment of the economic situation in the Crimean Peninsula during the “Dark Ages”.

Opis:
In recent years extensive attention has been given to the Rubus genus, but knowledge on the ecology of most of its species, including rhythmic development, is still insuffi cient. Such data may have practical applications, since blackberry species are economically important. The goal of the study was to analyse phenology and growth rate of vegetative and generative stems in 10 Rubus species of different systematic affi nity (belonging to two subspecies and three sections), growing in the Dendrological Garden of the Poznań University of Life Sciences. Some habitat factors were also taken into consideration. Field investigations were carried out for three growing seasons. The plants were evaluated for phenology twice a week, while the length of their stems was measured once a week. Diff erences were observed in the seasonal rhythm of individual species. Weather factors distinctly infl uenced the course of development phases in all the Rubus species. Drought during the growing season caused fl owering disorders, withering of fruit, earlier autumn leaf coloration, and fall of leaves. Rubus idaeus and R. fabrimontanus ripened all of their fruits each year of observations and seemed to be the most adapted for fruit production. Rubus fabrimontanus, R. kuleszae and R. praecox were the most vigorous species with reference to shoot growth. This study revealed that only some species were fully acclimated to the conditions of the Dendrological Garden, since they successfully completed their entire fl owering and fruiting cycles.

The present study was conducted to determine the quantitative effects of light and temperature on growth and development of organic tomato (Solanum lycopersicum L.) seedlings in a glasshouse under ecological conditions of Samsun Province of Turkey. Seedlings were grown in four different periods (seeds sown on 29 September for 1st period; 2 December for 2nd period; 18 March for 3rd period and 6 July for 4th period). In order to create different light intensities, shading material having a shading capacity of 50% in 1, 2 and 3 layers was used in each period after seeding. The effects of light and temperature on plant growth and development (leaf area, stomatal conductivity, leaf chlorophyll content, plant height, stem diameter and total plant vegetative dry weight) and the number of days from sowing to plantation of seedlings, were investigated. Obtained results revealed decreasing number of days from sowing to seedling plantation with increasing light intensities. Finally, the number of days from sowing to seedling plantation to be used in organic tomato seedling production was modeled based on the variations in temperature and light intensity (r2 = 0.92).

Opis:
The article presents methods of macroalgae cultivation performed worldwide in marine waters (long-lines, bottom planting, integrated cultivation). It describes a variety of technical approaches and discusses the possibility of conducting macroalgae cultivation in the Polish marine areas. All the presented methods can be tested in the Polish zone of the Baltic Sea, except integrated mariculture (IMTA). Species of the Ulva genus can be considered for culturing, however there is a lack of wide-ranging studies providing information on their biomass production on a larger scale and detailed chemical content. The effectiveness of cultivation will be restricted due to seasonal occurrence of species, as the conditions prevailing in the Polish marine waters are not favourable to macroalgae cultivation. Thus, it is suggested to consider implementation of a project aiming at the cultivation of perennial species Furcellaria lumbricalis (introduction of the species from the Gulf of Riga to the Puck Bay).
W artykule zaprezentowano wybrane metody uprawy makroglonów w wodach morskich na świecie (uprawy linowe w toni wodnej, uprawy na dnie, uprawy zintegrowane). Opisano różnorodne podejścia techniczne i przeanalizowano możliwość uprawy makroglonów w polskich obszarach morskich.

Semenov’s Fir (Abies semenovii B. Fedtsch.) is an extremely rare species in the wild and is included in the International Red List of Conifers and into the Red Data Books of the former USSR and Kyrgyz Republic. Our investigation confirms that this is an independent species, related but not identical to Abies sibirica Ledeb. It has been cultivated at Peter the Great Botanic Garden of the Komarov Botanical Institute of the Russian Academy of Science(s), St.Petersburg, since 1949. Apparently, it was here that Semenov’s Fir was first introduced into cultivation in European gardens. It has produced seeds since 2000, when it was less than 43 years old. It is a hardy and ornamental tree that deserves wider distribution in cultivation in the gardens and parks of North-West Russia. It is proposed that Semenov’s Fir should be given independent taxonomic status as a separate species, Abies semenovii B. Fedtsch.

Opis:
Based on a three-year field experiment under controlled condition in Ji’nan, China, the effects of peanut growth on the variation in the abundance and community structure of ammonia oxidizing bacteria (AOB) and archaea (AOA) before and after peanut growth were investigated through quantitative PCR and cluster analysis of terminal-restriction fragment length polymorphism. Our results show that the community composition of AOA and AOB was greatly affected by the peanut growth leading to the decreased abundance of AOA and increased abundance of AOB. Furthermore, AOA and AOB community structures varied before and after peanut growth. Phylogenetic analysis indicated that all AOA and AOB community sequences were clustered into the uncultured group. Altogether, the results suggested that the abundance of AOA and AOB in soil and their community compositions can be greatly affected by the peanut growth.

Forest tree seedling cultivation in Dunemann seedbeds facilitates the intensification of production of forest reproductive material. However, the construction of seedbeds themselves is not conducive to mechanisation of individual agrotechno-logical operations. Substrate preparation is usually performed by manual spreading of a fertiliser and by mixing it with the substrate by means of a manually operated rotary tiller powered by an internal combustion engine, which is followed by surface raking and compaction. This study presents a device that has no equivalent in nursery technology. The unit en-ables precise measurement of a fertiliser amount, mixing it with the soil to a given depth, forming a sowing surface, and soil compaction. Thanks to the use of the novel cultivation unit, the time-consuming substrate preparation becomes over 8 times lower as compared to the traditional manual technology.

Opis:
The aim of this study was to develop an inbred lines from octoploid strawberry and to determine their breeding value by estimating the effects of general combining ability (GCA) and mid-parent heterosis. All inbred lines were obtained through selfing using five cultivars. The number of inflorescences, number of flowers per inflorescence, fruit yield, fruit number per plant, average fruit weight, number and weight of leaves as well as number of runners per plant were recorded from 2014 to 2015. The highest breeding value was estimated for maternal forms of ‘Senga Sengana’ 17 for six important traits. The lowest GCA effects were exhibited by inbred lines derived from clone 1387 18. Degree of heterosis for a given trait differed greatly among hybrids. The highest heterosis in terms of a number of inflorescences, fruit yield, number of fruits per plant and leaf weight occurred in the Kent 7-14 × ‘Dukat’ progeny. The results obtained could be used to evaluate the agronomic performance and to make more efficient choices of parents in current strawberry breeding programs
