The subject area of the cult of images regarded as miraculous during the Old Polish period has long enjoyed the interest of scholars, who analysed it in historical, theological, religious, artistic or social terms. This applies to both single images (usually paintings) as well as to syntheses including selected groups of cult objects. The crowned pictures are of greatest interest, of course, but relatively little space has been devoted to local Marian centres. The aim of this article is to draw attention to eighteenth-century ceremonies involving miraculous paintings in the former Bełsk Province, especially in the local sanctuaries. Three ceremonies have been analysed: the coronation of the miraculous painting of Our Lady of Sokal, and ceremonies with the participation of the miraculous paintings of Our Lady of Łopatyn and Our Lady of Tartaków. The lack in the literature of a precise description of the course of the coronation of the miraculous Our Lady of Sokal picture has so far made general conclusions difficult.

The article discusses the artistic setting of the largest religious ceremony of the beginning of the 20th century, the coronation of the icon of Our Lady of Consolation in the Church of St. Peter and Paul in Lviv. The painting itself was considered to be one of the palladiums of the city, as in 1656, during the Swedish Deluge, the papal nuncio Vidoni first uttered the call to the “Queen of the Polish Crown” in front of this Marian image, in the presence of King Jan Kazimierz and the court. In 1904, on the occasion of the jubilee of the announcement of the Dogma of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary, the Mar- ian Congress took place in Lviv, and in that same year the decision was made to create new crowns for the painting of the Mother of God and Baby Jesus. A committee, composed of representatives from the aristocracy and bourgeoisie of the city, was set up to raise the appropriate funds, and the then Archbishop of Lviv, Józef Bilczewski, was asked to perform the solemn coronation. An artistic and technical committee was also established, which included the architect Teodor Talowski (chairman), Antoni Popiel, Andrzej Romaszkan, Tadeusz Czapelski and Karol Richtmann, who made the decision to transform the altar where the painting was placed and to convert the area of the church bay into a distinct chapel. The works were led by Karol Richtmann, the altar was renovated by the painter Karol Domański, and the new bronze antependium was designed by Antoni Popiel. The bolt with the depiction of Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception was made by the sculptor Piotr Wójtowicz. The icon of the Virgin Mary itself was restored by Henryk Kühn. The chapel vault was decorated with paintings by Tadeusz Popiel, and its space was separated from the rest of the church by a grid made according to a project by Alfred Zachariewicz. Antoni Popiel designed golden crowns and a new dress for the figures of the Mother of God and Baby Jesus, made by the goldsmith and jeweller Jan Wojtych. The Committee also commissioned new stained glass windows for the chapel from the Kraków workshop of Stanisław Ekielski and Antoni Tuch. The main work was completed in July 1905. On 12 February 1905, a coronation decree was issued in Rome, and Archbishop Bilczewski was appointed to perform the coronation act. On 28 April 1905, another decree was issued recognizing the antiquity and miraculousness of the painting, and the ceremony was sched- uled for 28th May. The church façade, side elevation and interior were decorated extensively, while the focal point was prepared for receiving the painting – “The Gothic golden throne with motifs from the tomb of Kazimierz the Great”. The decorations were designed by Stanisław Jasieński, a re- nowned painter and theatre decorator of the time. The streets and squares which the coronation procession went through were also adorned. The ceremony was very carefully planned and directed; it was attended by the clergy of the three Christian rites, local authorities and representatives of all social strata. When analyzing the coronation ceremonies, it is important to underline their considerable reliance on the schemes of corona- tions of Marian images which took place on Polish territory in the 18th century. The tradition of the last Marian coronation, of a painting from the Dominican Church in Lviv in 1751, was strongly referred to and accentuated in occasional prints that accompanied this solemn act. The reference to old Polish coronations can be seen in numerous occasional prints, in reporting on the course of the ceremony, as well as in the extensive de- scriptions and texts of sermons published. This ceremony had an exceptional social and national dimension, as it was the first such coronation in the former Polish lands since the loss of independence, and the most important ceremony before the outbreak of the First World War. Not without significance in this context was the underlined similarity of forms between the coronation throne and the canopy over the tombstone of Kazimierz the Great in the Kraków Cathedral, or the calling of one crown as Kazimierzowska and the other Jagiellońska. The new artistic remodeling of the Chapel of Our Lady in the Jesuit Church was a prelude to the renovation of the remaining altars in the church. The coronation ceremony and the restoration of the chapel gathered together the most important artists of the early 19th century working for the Church patronage in the capital of Galicia. The chapel designed by Teodor Talowski successfully combines an 18th -century retabulum with paintings by Tadeusz Popiel, being probably the last example of a true Baroque bel composto.

The present article discusses the “father” image in cult groups. “Cult” is understood here, following Randall Watters’ idea, as “extended family”. The explanation of the abuse that happens in such groups is sought in the “father” figure, that is the leader, whose status becomes empowered as his activities are legitimized by the authority of God. Afterwards, the article outlines how the role of “fictive family” is adopted by a cult, which implies their taking on parental roles. The way it works in Poland is illustrated with the example of the experiences of Sebastian Keller in the cult Niebo (Heaven). In addition, there is a discussion of the problem of the parents’ degradation, including the father’s, to the level of middle management, which is required to carry out the instructions of the leader, even if it is contrary to their own parental instincts. In conclusion, the author asks about the effective antidote against the abusive influence of the “extended family,” and finds it in the restoration of the father’s ethos and in a reasonably conducted informational mission on cults by the media and educational factors.
W artykule podjęto kwestię obrazu ojca w grupie kultowej, którą za Randallem Wattersem określono mianem rodziny poszerzonej. Przyczyn nadużyć występujących w takiej grupie poszukuje się w figurze ojca, który jest liderem ugrupowania i którego pozycja ulega wzmocnieniu, gdy swe działania uzasadnia autorytetem Boga. Następnie zarysowano problem wejścia sekty w rolę niby-rodziny, co sprowadza się do przejęcia przez grupę kultową ról rodzinie przynależnych. Jak to działa w Polsce, zilustrowano na przykładzie doświadczeń Sebastiana Kellera w sekcie Niebo. Ponadto zasygnalizowano problem degradacji rodziców, w tym ojca, do kategorii średniej klasy kierowniczej, wobec której oczekuje się, że będzie wypełniała polecenia lidera, nawet jeśli bywają one sprzeczne z instynktem rodzicielskim. Na koniec autor zadał pytanie o skuteczne antidotum przeciw nieuprawnionym wpływom rodziny poszerzonej, dostrzegając je zwłaszcza w odbudowie etosu ojca, ale i w rozsądnie realizowanej misji informacyjnej na temat sekt ze strony mediów czy czynników oświatowych.

List Ojca Świętego Jana Pawła II napisany w Rzymie, w roku 1987, w dziesiątym roku pontyfikaty, 4 grudnia, w dniu liturgicznego wspomnienia św. Jana Damasceńskiego, doktora Kościoła w 1200 rocznicę zakończenia sporu o ikony, ma istotne znaczenie w programie ekumenizmu Papieża. Wskazywał wiele kierunków dialogu z różnymi religiami, jednak największą troską było porozumienie z Kościołem prawosławnym, co potwierdzają listy oraz inne dokumenty Ojca Świętego przytaczane w niniejszej pracy. Istotne było zachowanie tradycji Kościoła, w którym nieodłącznym ogniwem dla praktyk religijnych słowa, modlitwy i pieśni był obraz. Surowy zakaz wprowadzony przez ikonoklazm podważał nie tylko artystyczne tradycje obrazów, lecz także sięgał do podstaw dogmatów Wcielenia Chrystusa i Matki Dziewicy Maryi Panny jako Theotokos. Zakaz był zagrożeniem dla ikon, ale też dla istoty wiary chrześcijańskiej. Papież podkreślił w swoim Liście rolę Soboru Nicejskiego II, który przywrócił ikony oraz zapewnił ich pogłębione znaczenie dla kultu wiernych w ugruntowaniu wiary. Ojciec Święty wskazał również związek z Soborem Watykańskim II odnoszącym się do rozumienia funkcji i formy obrazów w Kościele współczesnym. Współczesność owładnęła niemoc duchowego wyrazu sztuki sakralnej co stanowi troskę Papieża. List jest dramatycznym ostrzeżeniem wobec zagrożeń dla sztuki religijnej w czasach współczesnych, które Ojciec Święty wyraził słowami „Ponowne odkrywanie wartości chrześcijańskiej sztuki może być również pomocą w uświadomieniu sobie konieczności przeciwstawienia się depersonalizującym skutkom oddziaływania tak wielu obrazów”.
The letter of the Holy Father John Paul II written in Rome in 1987, in the tenth year of His pontificate, on December 4th, on the day of memorial of Saint John Damascene, the doctor of the Church, on the Twelfth Centenary of finishing the controversy over the icon, is of great importance for the Pope’s program of ecumenism. The Holy Father indicated various directions of the dialogue, however, the one of the utmost importance concerned the agreement with the Orthodox Church, which was confirmed in the letters and in His other documents quoted in this paper. The image used to be essential for religious practice, for illustrating the word of prayer and of the song, in order to preserve the tradition of the Church. The strict prohibition introduced by the iconoclasm depreciated not only the artistic tradition of paintings but also the basic dogmas of Christ’s Incarnation and the one which introduced Virgin Mary as the Theotokos (the God-bearer). The ban constituted a threat not only for the icons but also for the Christian faith. In His Letter, the Pope underlined the important role of the Second Council of Nicaea which reintroduced icons and maintained and deepened the meaning of the cult in the faith of believers. Furthermore, the Holy Father indicated the connection with the Second Vatican Council in understanding the function and form of images in contemporary Church. Contemporary trends are overwhelmed by the impotence of the spiritual expression of sacral art, which is a great concern for the Pope. The Letter is, therefore, a dramatic warning of the threats for religious art in contemporary time, expressed by the Holy Father with these words: ‘The rediscovery of the Christian icon will also help in raising the awareness of the urgency of reacting against the depersonalizing and at times degrading effects of the many images that condition our lives in advertisements and the media.’ (DS, 11).

In Christian religious consciousness, especially in Eastern Christianity, Andrew the Apostle has a place equal to that of his brother, Peter the Apostle. This article presents the information gathered about him and provided by the Gospel and the Acts of the Apostles. It also concisely describes the apocrypha about his missionary activities in Greece, Pontus, Thrace and Scythia, as well as the sources and reasons behind the development of his cult in Europe, including the Slavic nations. The origin of the given name Andrew is also included, along with the process of this name becoming common among the Slavs connected with the spread of the cult. The article stresses the importance of the transformation of the original image of this saint caused by the contamination of Christian beliefs and Slavic folk culture. The analysis of Polish calendar proverbs enabled to present the linguistic image of St. Andrew. Folk religious rites connected with his cult, which emerged as the result of intertwining of the Christian calendar and agricultural cycle, are also described. The saints to whom certain days in the Christian calendar were dedicated, started to be perceived as the guardians of these days, protecting people from the forces of nature, as well as the protectors of certain trades. The profiles of selected local Christian saints bearing the name Andrew are also presented.
