Opis:
The following article is an attempt at looking at the modern appropriations of Shakespeare’s King Lear’s story in two British plays: Edward Bond’s Lear (1971) and Howard Barker’s Seven Lears (1989). Both dates signify the first stage premieres of the plays in question: Bond’s play was first opened at the Royal Court Theatre, London and Barker’s play was opened October at Sheffield Crucible. Both plays explicitly relate to King Lear’s story by their titles and both are recognized as the best-known and most powerful dramatic reworkings of the Lear story. Although both playwrights place themselves within two disparate theatrical traditions: Rational Theatre (Bond) and The Theatre of Cruelty (Barker), they are noted for their political allusions. Yet the primary concern of the following article will be to see to what extent is the “myth” of Lear modified in two modern versions. To achieve this effect the author of the article will closely look at the spatial arrangement, time scheme, plot development, story line, character presentation and values, as well as some major themes. Also Lear as the main character will be shown in its various roles and relations: as a loving father, a king, a leader, a madman and a tragic figure.

The aim of this paper is to present the idea of violence in Nietzsche’s work, seen as a basic principle that organizes and unites different elements of his philosophy. Violence is one of its crucial categories, which he exploits in his descriptions and analyses of metaphysical, historical and social-cultural reality. In what follows, I shall examine different meanings and renditions of violence in Nietzsche, both in their negative as well as positive aspects. I shall start from an attempt to locate Nietzsche’s understanding of violence within the Western philosophical tradition. Then, I will discuss it in the light of the evolution of Nietzsche’s work. By analyzing the positive and constructive meaning of violence, I shall be able to conclude the essay by emphasizing that in Nietzsche’s political project violence acquires a spiritual and sublime nature.

The aim of this paper is to analyze the phenomenon of cruelty according to deontology in education. The cruelty represents a significant threat to the pedagogical relationship for two reasons. Firstly, as one of the forms of aggression. Secondly, it occurs mostly in a hidden or covert form. The author refers to the concepts of cruelty put forth by Michel de Montaigne and Judith N. Shklar. Indicating indicates the difference between cruelty and violence, he points out the measures to prevent the emergence of atrocities in education and everyday life.

The aim of the present article is an attempt to analyse and interpret cinematic cruelty from a sociological and philosophical perspective. Contrary to the received wisdom, where film violence results on the viewers’ side from the destructive aspects of human nature and on the producers’ side from the desire for material profit, the author presents an alternative approach to this social phenomenon. The main thesis is that gore in movies poses a more or less fulfilling artistic commentary on actual social relationships and contemporary cultural conditions. The line of the argument is divided into three parts: in the first part, the author describes the modern transition from a transcendental to a transgressive understanding of the body and of corporeality; in the second part, the author presents the issue of cultural fascination with cruelty, from a sociological and also from a historical perspective; in the third and last part, the author analyses and interprets the respective aspects of three selected violent movies, pointing out their sociological and philosophical implications. The main methodological premise is posed by the concept of the ‘productive viewer’ from Rainer Winter, according to which the viewer is not a passive perceiver of art, but is an active and interpretive subject of the pictures on the basis of their contemporary cultural meanings and content.

Opis:
The basic questions posed in the article were: what characteristics caused Arabs to be perceived by the elites of the Neo-Assyrian Empire as strangers, and whether such classification resulted in their treatment differently from other peoples? Neo-Assyrian royal inscriptions and correspondence with the court were analysed to answer these questions. On this basis, three features that together are unique only to Arabs were distinguished: nomadism, camel farming and the presence of queens. These traits are unique to Arabs, so they are strangers par excellence from Assyria’s perspective. Interestingly, these features generally do not result in exceptional treatment. Only in a situation of conflict and defeat of the Arabs can one perceive their specific treatment, marked by exceptional cruelty even for Assyrians. For example, mainly Arab rulers were chained along with wild animals to the gates of the Assyrian capital. Moreover, only Arab women were subjected to tearing unborn children out of their wombs. This shows that Arabs were treated as half-humans against whom the most heinous crimes could be committed because Assyrians were not bound by the standards applicable to other peoples.

Opis:
Violence occupies a regal position in the work of de Sade. It manifests itself in two forms: sexual persecution (excesses, manias, perversions, cruelty) and enlightened reasoning (unabashed promotion of naturalism, rationalism, hedonism and atheism). De Sade uses his most precious instrument as a semblance, by creating a magic spectacle of a gothic novel, and as truth, when he presents himself as a metaphysician and moralist. What kind of reading of de Sade deserves the title of the most adequate one? Does de Sade exist in text only? Is he the liberator, so praised by surrealists? Or does his transgressive nature go beyond the postulates of moral or social-political liberalism and penetrate the sphere of existence, demanding such actions that could be performed only by an individual consciously aiming at its doom? In his theatrum of passions and arguments, de Sade returns to the motif of rivalry between good and evil, simulating various narrative positions: from impulsive libertinism to dark Gnosticism, and reaches for complementary means of expression: from apology of crime to a lyrically tinted martyrological emphasis. Reading de Sade need not cause indignation. If one remembers that he is a transhistorical philosopher, one can deal with him in the way suggested by Chantal Thomas – euphorically. The reading of de Sade, like all other texts, depends on the times; in his case, the best atmosphere is provided by the mental and political atmosphere created by liberal democracy. He can be read there with open mind and physically relaxed, lightly – as becoming for a comoedia.

Opis:
Kmicic).
The aim of the following paper is to analyze the theme of cruelty in what is considered to be the greatest novel written by Tadeusz Konwicki. The author argues that the way it is pictured focuses almost exclusively on imagery, as the theme itself is beyond traditional literary description (as stated before by the scholar Wolfgang Sofsky). The article focuses not the subject within this one single work only, but also introduces the reader to its evolution and later use in other novels (such as Nic albo nic [Nothing or nothing] or Kilka dni wojny, o której nie wiadomo, czy była [A Few Days of the War We Were Never Sure Actually Happened]) – which introduce the value of ‘hope’ within the theme. Additional attention is drawn to the ‘issues’ Communist Poland’s literary criticism had with the way the writer presented partisan movements during war in the Eastern Borderlands clearly avoiding in-depth analysis of the motif. Marcinów concludes that both Sennik współczesny [The Contemporary Dream Book] and the historical period the novel is set within share the significance of the theme of betrayal and links it with the fate of a prominent partisan leader in the Eastern Borderlands, lieutenant Antoni Burzynski, codename Kmicic.

Common access to the Internet is strictly correlated with increased number of pathological activities in the Web. The paper presents the patho-streaming phenomenon – online live emissions of demoralized behaviours and verbal and physical aggression acts with the purpose of gaining popularity measured by the number of viewers as well as financial benefits. Pathostream is presented from historical perspective as an answer to the eternal demand for cruelty and also as a symptom of exhibitionism and narcissism in mass media culture.

Opis:
The offence of animal abuse is defined in the Act on the protection of animals under Article 35 para. 1a APA (basic type) and Article 35 para. 2 APA (aggravated type: killing and abuse of animals with extraordinary cruelty). The legislator understands animal abuse as inflicting or consciously allowing someone to inflict pain or suffering and lists the most typical instances of such conduct under Article 6 para. 1 APA. The crime under Article 35 para. 1a APA is a common offence that can be committed as both action and omission. It is an offence that is formal in nature. As far as the subjective aspect of it is concerned, both forms of intent can occur. The aggravated type of the offence referred to in Article 35 para. 2 APA can only be committed intentionally (direct intent) in both forms of an act (action and omission). The provisions of Article 35 paras. 1a and 2 are often in real typical concurrence with other provisions (e.g. Article 52(4) Act of 13 October 1995: Hunting law; Article 128(1) Act of 16 April 2004 on the protection of nature; Article 207 CC, Article 288 CC, and Article 202 §3 CC). It should be remembered that in accordance with Article 1 APA, “an animal, as a living creature able to feel pain, is not a thing”; however, dereification of animals has not resulted in their personification with a consequence of their empowerment and ability to obtain and possess rights.
35 ust. 1a i 2 pozostają w rzeczywistym właściwym zbiegu z innymi przepisami (np. z art. 52 pkt 4 ustawy z 13.10.1995 r. – Prawo łowieckie; z art. 128 pkt 1 ustawy z 16.04.2004 r. o ochronie przyrody; z art. 207 k.k., art. 288 k.k., art. 202 §3 k.k.). Należy pamiętać, że zgodnie z art. 1 u.o.z. „zwierzę, jako istota żyjąca, zdolna do odczuwania cierpienia, nie jest rzeczą”, jednakże dereifikacja zwierząt nie spowodowała ich personifikacji ze skutkiem w postaci upodmiotowienia i zdolności nabywania i posiadania praw.

Opis:
The aim of the study was to establish whether police officers, i.e. individuals who experience a lot of aggression from other people, react emotionally to aggressive stimuli differently than students, i.e. individuals that would not have such an experience. The introduction presents a review of contemporary theories of aggression that explain the mechanisms of responses to aggressive stimuli and provocation to aggression. The main hypotheses to be studied were based on the theory of emotional desensitisation. According to this theory, those who have been more exposed in their life to aggression and have experienced aggression react less emotionally to aggressive stimuli, including scenes of cruelty. Thus the police officers should respond with weaker emotional responses to the observed cruelty than the students. Secondly, it was hypothesised that a richer experience with aggression in the past is related to a lower emotional arousal, feeling weaker negative emotions (anxiety, fear, sadness, disgust and anger), less negative evaluations of cruelty, and lower cruelty disapproval. The 134 police officers (aged 24-49 years) exposed to aggression and 125 students (aged 21-32 years) from medical studies and the humanities were examined individually. The questionnaires in use were: STAXI to measure anxiety-traits, BPAQ to measure aggression-traits, anger-traits and hostility, NOBAGGS to measure normative beliefs about aggression, an adapted questionnaire about serious physical aggression, the adapted proactive/reactive aggression scale, and the modified “scale of exposure to violence and violence use by police on the job” by Kowalczyk. The subjects’ reactivity level and emotional arousal in response to the viewed scenes of cruelty were measured by UFI 2071 (to measure skin conductance levels) and self-evaluations at the 7-point rating scales. The subjects marked the levels they felt positive and negative emotions (amusement, joy, relief, anxiety, fear, sadness, anger, and disgust) while watching scenes of cruelty and their evaluations of the observed cruelty (violent, unpleasant, liked, and justified) on a 7-point rating scale. Short excerpts from movies depicting acts of beatings, torture, or murder served as the scenes of cruelty (aggressive stimuli). The research showed that: (1) the policemen were generally less prone to aggression, but they had more experiences with it than the students; (2) the policemen’s emotional reactions to observed cruelty were weaker and less negative than the students’ ones (lower emotional arousal, weaker anxiety, fear, sadness and disgust); (3) the policemen and students did not vary on their evaluations of brutality and justification for cruelty in the observed scenes; their evaluations are negative; (4) a richer experience with aggression is related to a lower emotional response to cruelty (a lower emotional arousal, weaker emotions of anxiety and fear and fewer negative assessments of cruelty, i.e. its brutality and disapproval in both groups examined); (5) the aggression experienced by police officers at work is related to less emotional resistance to the scenes of cruelty: the policemen respond with stronger fear that victimises them and may contribute to the development of trauma; (6) a richer experience of coercive measures at work are related to a weaker emotional response to the observed cruelty (a lower emotional arousal, weaker negative emotions and less negative evaluations of the observed cruelty). The hypotheses formulated on the basis of the theory of desensitisation that the emotional responses of police officers to observed cruelty are dependent on previous experience with aggression, has been confirmed by the findings of the study. The police officer’s emotional reactions to cruelty are weaker as compared to the students’ responses. The results are discussed from the point of view of work demands and the importance of efficiency in police work. The factor lowering the policemen’s emotional resistance to cruelty is their experience of victimisation with aggression. The factor increasing their emotional resistance to cruelty is prior experience of the use of aggression, i.e. situations in which they had the opportunity to use coercive measures reasonably and without the negative influence of increased emotional arousal.

The questions about cruelty in modern Western societies become fully justified in the case of the problem of psychological torture, namely mobbing. It is a phenomenon that is hardly noticed and remains significantly and scientifically sidelined. Marginalised, it is primarily treated only as a dysfunction that hampers the interest of an organisation. The aim of the article is to present mobbing in the light of considerations relating to the nature of cruelty, which - although it changes its forms – still remains an acutely present disposition.

The text written by Jean Bretog Tragédie française à huit personnages (1571) is, like its Normandy author, still unknown to a wider group of specialists. This drama, through its moralizing and allegorical character, derives from and inscribes itself in the tradition of medieval morality plays and mysteries. At the same time its subject matter focused around l’homme coupable and the punishment imposed on it, and the dominant poetics of l’exhibition de la violence, it is a harbinger of the theatrical aesthetics of baroque. Characteristic feature of mentioned period is, among other things, the lack of resistance to dazzle with cruelty. This article will focus on the scaffold motive present in the piece, related issue of boundaries and the possibility of presenting brutal and cruel events on the stage, as well as their engagement and influence on main character. The analysis will concern the descriptive and representative dimension of the motif.
