    This paper focuses on the question of conditions under which a written or a spoken phrase can be interpreted as ‘critical’. After all, the possibility to express something in different ways—contrasted with the expressions that have already been uttered - is one of the main features of language in use. Contrastive discourse linguistics as critical practice interrelates expressions from different languages. In this way, it shows alternative expressions and thoughts beyond their own discursive environment.
    Punktem wyjścia podjętych w pracy rozważań jest odpowiedź na pytanie dotyczące warunków, które muszą zostać spełnione, by móc uznać realizację jakiegoś wyrażenia za ‘krytyczne’ na tle innych. Każdy odmienny sposób wyrażania (pojmowany tutaj jako ciągłe re-formułowanie i tym samym kontrastowanie z tym, co zostało już powiedziane, czyli proces nieodłącznie wpisany w codzienną komunikację) stanowi wszakże podstawową właściwość języka w użyciu. Skupiając się na relacjach wyrażeń pochodzących z różnych języków, kontrastywna lingwistyka dyskursu w ujęciu krytycznym, ukazuje na ich tle alternatywne możliwości wyrażania i sposoby myślenia.
    Ausgangspunkt ist die Frage, welche Bedingungen erfüllt sein müssen, um die sprachliche Realisierung eines Ausdrucks im Kontrast zu anderen Ausdrücken als ,kritisch‘ bewerten zu können. Schließlich ist das Anders-Sagen als stetige Re-Formulierung und der damit einhergehende alltägliche gesellschaftliche Vorgang der Kontrastierung zu bereits Gesagtem eine grundlegende Eigenschaft von Sprache im Gebrauch. Kontrastive Diskurslinguistik als kritisches Verfahren verstanden setzt Ausdrücke unterschiedlicher Sprachen in Beziehung und zeigt dadurch alternativen Ausdrucks- und Denkweisen auf.

    The present paper explores the current nexus between Cognitive Linguistics (CL) and Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA), focusing on theories of conceptual positioning, distancing and perspective-taking in discourse space. It assesses the strengths, limitations, and prospects for further operationalization of positioning as a valid methodology in CDA, and political discourse studies in particular. In the first part, I review the cognitive models of positioning that have made the most significant contribution to CDA. Discussing Deictic Space Theory and Text World Theory, among others, I argue that these models reveal further theoretical potential which has not been exploited yet. While they offer a comprehensive and plausible account of how representations and ideologically charged worldviews are established, they fail to deliver a pragmatic explanation of how addressees are made to establish a worldview, in the service of speaker’s goals. The second part of the paper outlines Proximization Theory, a discursive model of crisis and conflict construction in political discourse. I argue that, unlike the other models, it fully captures the complex geopolitical and ideological positioning in political discourse space, providing a viable handle on the dynamics of conflict between the opposing ideologies of the space.

    This paper gives a critical overview of various analytical approaches dominating the field of discourse studies in the last three decades, from the perspective of their philosophical and formative bases: social constructionism and linguistics. It explores different conceptions and features of the theoretical nexus between these two bases leading to the emergence of three distinct yet apparently complementary strands of thought (i-iii). The paper starts with the account of (i) Laclau and Mouffe’s classical discourse theory and its idea of ‘discursive struggle’ – a struggle of particular ways of talking of and understanding the world in an attempt to achieve discursive (and social) hegemony. Laclau and Mouffe’s assumption that no discourse is a closed entity but rather transformed through contact with other discourses is then taken as the introductory premise to present a vast, complex and heterogeneous family of (ii) critical discourse studies. Critical discourse studies are characterized in the paper as a hub of text-analytical practices that work on the link between language and social reality from the perspective of power and empowerment, explaining how discourse partakes in the production, change and negotiations of ideologically-charged meanings. Most crucially, they establish a methodological link between social theory and linguistics, providing discourse analysis with text-analytical tools and methods. Finally, the paper discusses (iii) three recent discourse analytical models: Discourse Space Theory, Critical Metaphor Analysis and Legitimization-Proximization Model. Originally located in the cognitive-psychological strand of critical discourse studies, these new models can now be seen as fully-fledged discourse theories with their own apparatus of analysis, involving concepts from cognitive linguistics, pragmatics and social psychology. It is argued that these three new theories make a further (and thus far final) step toward consolidation of the social-theoretical and linguistic bases in contemporary discourse studies. The empirical benefits of this consolidation are discussed in the last part of the paper, which includes a brief case study where the new models are used in the analysis of Polish anti-immigration discourse.

    The paper argues that modern linguistics, despite having developed its own critical and reflexive branches such as the critical discourse analysis (CDA), has not been able to apply a critical perspective towards its own field yet. While the contextual character of its key notions (e.g. meaning or text structures) has been already widely accepted, the contextual nature of linguistics itself with all its tools has not been fully recognized. The paper argues that linguistics, including contemporary schools of discourse analysis, may be seen as strongly entangled in power relations. Several discourse analytical concepts are deconstructed by means of demonstrating their potential role in power structures reproduction. The latter may take shape of introducing or perpetuating textual hierarchies in academia and other social fields. The notions put under critical scrutiny context itself (social nature of which is not yet fully recognized) as well as textuality and its criteria (coherence, language competences, emotions, politicization, meta-discourse and reflexivity).
    W artykule przedstawiono wizję rozwoju językoznawstwa rozumianego jako wzrost jego refleksyjności i kontekstowości. Pomimo powstania takich subdyscyplin, jak Krytyczna Analiza Dyskursu, językoznawstwo nie zdołało w pełni zwrócić narzędzi krytycznej analizy ku sobie. Choć kontekstowa natura takich pojęć, jak „znaczenie” czy „struktura” tekstu została już powszechnie zaakceptowana, kontekstowy charakter samego językoznawstwa i większości jego fundamentalnych pojęć nie został jeszcze w pełni uznany. W artykule przedstawiono spojrzenie na językoznawstwo, wraz z analizą dyskursu, jako na narzędzia władzy czy też dziedziny nauki silnie uwikłane w relacje władzy. Na przykładzie analizy szeregu pojęć, głównie z zakresu teorii dyskursu, pokazano, jaką rolę w reprodukcji stosunków władzy oraz budowaniu hierarchii tekstów, w tym naukowych, mogą odgrywać narzędzia językoznawcze. Analizie poddano między innymi rolę pojęć takich jak: kontekst, kryteria tekstowości (w szczególności spójność), kompetencja językowa, emocjonalność, metadyskurs i polityzacja.

    Stemming from a conviction that the same phenomenon can be construed differently by different cognisers, metaphors used “reflect[ing] and effect[ing] underlying construal operations which are ideological in nature” (Hart 2011, 2), the present paper investigates how the conceptualisation and linguistic construction of IMMIGRANTS changed over time, forwarding a convenient representation of reality. To that end, the study marries the Cognitive Linguistic approach to Critical Discourse Analysis (Charteris-Black 2004; Hart 2010; 2011; 2015) with the multifactorial usage-feature analysis (Glynn 2010). The results have shown that in the times of increased migration IMMIGRANTS were objectified, their otherness foregrounded through appropriate discursive strategies and topoi. Curbing immigration in later periods contributed to an observable shift in the linguistic representation of the immigrant out-group.

    The paper aims at describing the discourse of the Polish Catholic Church upon family. The perspective of Critical Discourse Analysis is adapted and chosen categories suggested by van Leeuwen (2008) are used. The study is conducted on corpus (241-thousand words) of official documents published on website of Polish Bishop’s Conference. Qualitative and quantitative methods are used. The analysis reveals three discursive ways of constructing of the family: family as a part of church’s community, family as week, endangered and needing protection and strong connection between family and national identity.

    Celem artykułu jest potwierdzenie tezy, że postulat transdyscyplinarności, wysuwany w  rozważaniach dotyczących współczesnego przekładoznawstwa, znajduje uzasadnienie w zbieżności podstawowych  założeń językoznawstwa kognitywnego, krytycznej analizy dyskursu i wiedzy o przekładzie. „Zwrot kulturowy” w przekładoznawstwie, odnotowany w tym samym czasie, co „zwrot kognitywny” w nauce o języku, oznacza  możliwość wkroczenia obu dyscyplin na teren praktycznie  zarezerwowany dla badań nad krytyczną analizą dyskursu. Przełamanie niechęci lub braku zainteresowania dla sąsiednich dyscyplin  prowadzi do rozszerzenia wspólnej płaszczyzny działania. Tezę ilustruje studium przypadku: przykład tłumaczenia tekstu, o którego językowym kształcie decyduje szeroki kontekst społeczny i kulturowy.
    The paper argues that the postulate of transdisciplinarity, put forward by today’s TS scholars, is justified by the convergence of basic principles and assumptions which underlie Cognitive Linguistics, Critical Discourse Analysis and Translation Studies. The “cultural turn” in TS occurred at the same time as the “cognitive turn” in linguistics; both make it possible for CL and TS to cross the boundary and enter the area traditionally occupied by CAD. Overcoming the feeling of mutual reluctance or lack of interest in the research  carried out within neighbouring disciplines would make it possible to broaden the plane shared by the scholars. As an illustration, a case study is discussed, providing a text whose linguistic shape in translation is influenced by a broad social and cultural context.
