Opis:
This paper starts from several applications described by initial/boundary value problems for 1D (time and one space variable) hyperbolic partial differential equations whose basic properties and stability of equilibria are studied throughout the same properties for certain associated neutral functional differential equations. It is a common fact that asymptotic stability for neutral functional differential equations is normally obtained under the assumption of asymptotic stability of the difference operator associated to the aforementioned neutral functional differential equations. However the physically meaningful applications presented in the paper have the associated difference operator(s) in critical cases (their stability is, generally speaking, non-asymptotic). Consequently the stability of the considered application models is either non-asymptotic or fragile (in a sense introduced in the paper). The models represent an overview gathered from various fields, processed here in order to emphasize the associated neutral functional differential equations which, consequently, are a challenge to the usual approaches. In the concluding part there are suggested possible ways to overcome these difficulties.

It has been long pointed that Indonesian education system embraces active learning to enhance critical thinking. However, active learning techniques are not yet optimally introduced in Indonesian education settings. Studies have shown case studies combined with the concept map method improving students’ critical thinking. However, there is a lack of evidence related to this method in the Indonesian education system. The presented study examined the effect of a case study combined with the concept map on improving critical thinking skills in Indonesian first-year college students. Three groups attended classes with the same class objectives and contents, consisting of eight weekly meetings. The only difference among the groups was the educational strategy; case study combined with concept map (CSCM), case study alone (CS), and traditional lecture style with no specific active learning techniques (Control). Results indicated that the CSCM method is most effective in improving critical thinking skills. Although CSCM was also most effective on improving critical thinking disposition, differences among groups were not statistically significant.

Purpose: This article provides an understanding of international retailers’ successes and failures when expanding in the Polish market. Accordingly, the objectives of this article were to define and identify what are the critical factors of success and failures of international retailers’ strategies while expanding in the Polish market according to the retailers themselves. Methodology: Adopting an interpretative research approach, this article elaborates a multiple explanatory case study design to discover how existing theory on internationalization compared to how internationalization is experienced and conceptualized by practitioners in their natural contexts. Findings: Twenty cases were studied among which were found four successful retailers and two who had failed. Coding of categories highlighted five critical success factors and five critical failure factors. Pricing strategy, necessity of adapting operations to local market, learning by doing, e-commerce and early entry timing appeared as factors of success or at least as “facilitating factors.” Choosing the inappropriate entry method, underestimating competition, developing the retail network and retail environment at a slow pace and not giving enough means of abnegation led to failures in Poland. Originality: This article contributes to filling two main gaps identified in the literature review. Many different theoretical approaches exist but no conclusive framework has emerged. Besides, most concepts were developed and tested on western European countries and nothing proved adequate to the specific retail landscape of eastern Europeans countries such as Poland.

Opis:
Being a strong yet growing economy, Poland is among the global leaders for doing business and an attractive destination for foreign companies expanding their reach abroad. However, entering such a complex and challenging market does not always go smoothly. Thence, this study aims to determine the critical factors hindering the development of international business in the country. To do so, the research employed an instrumental explanatory case study approach. The research subject is a subsidiary of a German electronics manufacturer in Poland, whose employee, who is also a researcher, is trying to identify the reasons for the company’s poor results in attracting new customers. Further thematic analysis of qualitative data from field notes and individual interviews with customers identified the following five factors that might be responsible for that: novelty, staff, logistics, communications, and marketing. The findings suggest that to be successful in the Polish context, an international business should offer novelty in its products or services, employ some local personnel, rely on local logistics, and conduct as much communication as possible in the Polish language, especially in marketing. The study not only fills the gaps in the literature on international business development in the Polish context, but also offers practical recommendations for improving the efficacy of international companies, regardless of their geographical location.

Opis:
Bullfighting is increasingly seen as a contested practice in Portugal. The Portuguese public generally disapproves of the practice and the Portuguese animal rights movement has dedicated a significant number of their campaigns to protesting against it. Despite this opposition to the practice, however, there is still legal protection of the practice on grounds of preserving it as a national tradition. This contestation and legality has led bullfighting supporters to actively try to defend and rationalize the practice. This paper analyses this defence and rationalization by exploring a case study of the quasi-lobbyist Portuguese organization, Prótoiro. The aforementioned case study is analyzed through the use of critical discourse analysis and neutralization theory. The conclusion reached in this article is that the analysis of speech reveals that Prótoiro and its supporters try to morally disengage with the harm done to the bull by using justifications that bullfighting is an ethical activity.

Tezy realizmu krytycznego zostały zilustrowane dwoma przykładami podejść badawczych z zakresu nauk o zarządzaniu (Webera i Kołodki). Przedstawiono metodę analizy przypadku (case study research) jako podstawową metodę badawczą realizmu krytycznego oraz porównano tę metodę z analogicznie nazywanymi metodami, używanymi w paradygmacie modernistycznym i interpretatywnym.
The article describes questions which determine how research programs in the management sciences are classified into various paradigms, which have appeared in the Polish literature on the subject. It describes critical realism as an approach which unites the main research assumptions of the different paradigms. It postulates that critical realism is the appropriate paradigm for management sciences. Two examples of approaches to management science research are used to illustrate the theses of critical realism (Weber and Kołodko). The method of case study research is described as the basic research tool of critical realism, and is compared to analogously named methods used in modernistic and interpretative paradigms.

Opis:
The subject of the article concerns the issue of constructing and reconstructing national identity. The object of interest here is a sociological case study of Serbian national identity. It includes reconstruction and interpretation of in-depth interviews conducted in Serbia with the representatives of Serbian symbolic elites. The concept of symbolic elites is approached in the discussed research from Teun van Dijk’s perspective. Thus, they are individuals and groups directly involved in the production of public opinion, who have an impact on the content of publicly available knowledge, and the creation and legitimization of public discourse. The work is embedded in the methodological framework of Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) and is based on the assumptions of the Discourse‐Historical Approach (DHA). In this optics, the most important thing is the historical and social context of the studied process of the discursive construction of national identity. Therefore, the conclusions also touch upon the historical, political, and social perspective of the formation of Serbian national identity. The reflection also aims at presenting the analysis from the contemporary perspective (mainly in 2008-2020). Thus, paying attention to the political divisions in Serbia and the country’s road to democratization and European integration, the discussed research study shows the comprehensive specifics of the studied national identity.

The objective of this study is to analyze a Finnish manufacturing case company’s operational competitiveness. A proposed analytical model based on analyses the corresponding angles of the strategic triangles (Prospector, Analyzer, and Defender). The model compares the angle differences between the strategy and resource triangles with opinions from different management groups of informants. It was found out that Normalized Scaled Critical Factor Index (NSCFI) model is more scientific comparing to formal ones through validation. Calculations based on the MSI questionnaire resulted in medium high values for the Prospector strategy both for past- and future orientation. S&R calculations regarding the past orientation resulted in low values for all strategy types, except P-NSCFI for Analyzer. Moreover this study covers a case, in where Balanced Critical Factor Index (BCFI) was used defining company annual strategy plan.

Opis:
The author examines five common misunderstandings about case-study research: (1) Theoretical knowledge is more valuable than practical knowledge; (2) One cannot generalize from a single case, therefore the single case study cannot contribute to scientific development; (3) The case study is most useful for generating hypotheses, while other methods are more suitable for hypotheses testing and theory building; (4) The case study contains a bias toward verification; and (5) It is often difficult to summarize specific case studies. He explains and corrects these misunderstandings one by one and concludes with the Kuhnian insight that a scientific discipline without a large number of thoroughly executed case studies is a discipline without systematic production of exemplars, and that a discipline without exemplars is an ineffective one. Social science may be strengthened by the execution of more good quality case studies.
Artykuł ten analizuje pięć powszechnych nieporozumień dotyczących badań typu studium przypadku: (1) wiedza teoretyczna jest bardziej wartościowa od wiedzy praktycznej; (2) nie można dokonywać uogólnień na podstawie pojedynczego przypadku i dlatego studium przypadku nic nie wnosi do rozwoju naukowego; (3) studium przypadku jest użyteczne w stawianiu hipotez, podczas gdy inne metody są bardziej odpowiednie dla testowania hipotez i budowy teorii; (4) studium przypadku zawiera skrzywienie skierowane ku weryfikacji; (5) podsumowanie studium przypadku jest często trudne. Artykuł wyjaśnia i koryguje te nieporozumienia, odwołując się do kuhnowskiej tezy, iż dyscyplina naukowa bez dużej liczby porządnie opracowanych studiów przypadku nie dostarcza systematycznie przykładów empirycznych, a dyscyplina bez przykładów jest nieefektywna. Nauki społeczne mogą stać się bardziej wartościowe poprzez przeprowadzenie większej liczby dobrych studiów przypadku.
