Opis:
Results of investigations of modelled crash tests have been presented. The results were obtained with the use of a measuring stand that was designed and built at the Department of Vehicles and Fundamentals of Machine Design of the Technical University of Lodz for the simulation of vehicle collisions together with the accompanying phenomena. The stand included a scale vehicle model made of steel profiles with adjustable crumple zone size and variable pre-crash mass, a model acceleration track with a precise vehicle start positioning system where the model was brought to its starting position with the use of a tractor provided with a stepping motor, a non-deformable obstacle, as well as time and deceleration measuring systems. The basic design requirements adopted and the stand calibration procedures have been presented. The research possibilities related to the investigation of modelled crash tests have been described and illustrated with measurement examples. The stand makes it possible to carry out model tests both on the controlled crumple zone and, after inverting the reaction system, on energy-absorbing traffic barriers. Apart from being used by University staff for their own research work, the stand has constituted for several years a cognitively attractive facility willingly used by students during their laboratory classes in subjects related to vehicle construction and passive safety problems.

Opis:
The paper is dedicated to forming and properties of passenger car´s B-pillar reinforcement drawn from simple blank and alternatively tailor-welded blank (TWB). Drawn part is characterised by a place with a large strain, while forming process simulation did not confirm the creation of crack using the TWB consisting of dual phase HCT980X instead of previous HCT600 steel. It is because HCT980X steel has higher strength and lower ductile properties. The analysis of properties of drawn parts is focused on the simulated crash test in Dynaform software. Obtained sizes of drawn forces in simulated frame of the drawn parts and their comparison proved the possibility of the replacement the 1.2 mm thick simple blank from HCT600 steel with the 1 mm thick TWB consisting of HCT600 and HCT980X steel. The changed thickness of the simple blank caused 20% weight saving while containing the same properties of the drawn part.

Following paper introduces the nonlinear method of determining the velocity of a vehicle before the impact-the Equivalent Energy Speed (EES). To estimate the magnitude of EES, the method utilizes the deformation work Wdef of the vehicle, defined by the quotient of deformation coefficient Cs and plastic deformation. Combined with the introduction of the B-spline tensor products and least square approximation with probabilistic weights, method shows promising results.

The seriousness of an impact "large truck - motor vehicle" has been exhibited. The procedures of truck and motor car s crash testing were compared in order to point out the necessity of car s crashworthiness investigation in terms of compatibility and impacts between vehicles with large difference in mass and rigidity. Furthermore the paper explains a course of frontal impact between large truck and motor car in order to proof the necessity of cars compatibility as well as aggressivity investigation. The mass effect along with rigidity effect was exhibited as well. Moreover, the paper explains the design as well as objectives of the passive safety devices of both motor car and large truck. The concept of another, innovative passive safety device such as "active bumper" has been emphasized. Its working principia, adaptive control as well as the diagrammatically presented design were pointed out. The bumpers control is very difficult as it will be entirely independent from a driver and it has to operate in random condition, therefore, the paper contains a proposition of controlling algorithm of the "active bumper". It also contains explanation of adaptation of the "active bumper" with various working condition as well as consideration of the "active bumper" application with various types of large trucks design.

Opis:
Road safety problem is still topical, especially since the number of vehicles and the volume of traffic are increasing. It is possible to increase the safety of road users through systemic changes in many areas related to transport. The deformation of the vehicle body during an accident has an impact on the loads acting on the passengers. Vehicle body deformation depends on complex parameters, and knowledge of these parameters is essential for designing crumple zones and the accident reconstruction process. Knowledge of the mechanical parameters of the vehicle structure during deformation is also a reference to passenger injury indicators assessment. This paper reports results from the analytical approach for determining the protection level of personal vehicles. The proposed conception is based on the results from the static stiffness characteristic of the Ford Taurus, which gives the possibility of phenomenological and simple body crumple analytical description at a speed equal to 10 km/h, 40 km/h, 56 km/h and 60 km/h, which is an original part of the work. The approach enables us to describe the vehicle crash by focusing on variations of deformation in time, stiffness, vehicle collision time (duration), deceleration and dynamic crash force. Basing on the body stiffness data of the personal vehicle, the length of the deformation zone in the front of the car and the maximum values of force at the crash for a speed of 60 km/h are presented. Results obtained by the authors show that is possible to estimate the overloading level during the crash time of a vehicle based on the stiffness characteristic of the car body. The proposed methodology can be developed and the advantage of the presented procedure is an uncomplicated useful tool for solving complex problems of a vehicle crash.

The work describes the experimental test methodology and results obtained during the experimental crash tests involving passenger cars and the prototype concrete protective barrier, which was built according to the original design prepared by the authors of this article. The crash tests involving a vehicle and the protective barrier cover the experiment results in three basic areas: severity ofthe collision impact on vehicle passengers, the impact on a vehicle and deformation of the road protective system. Applied testing procedures meet the requirements of the national standards, that make the equivalents of the European standards EN-1317-1:1998, EN-1317-2:1998, EN-J 317-3:2000. The tests have been performed for selected crash criteria (TB11 and TB32), for a normal restrain level (N2), using three passenger's cars (Dodge Neon and 2 units of Suzuki Swift). Applied testing procedures meet the requirements of the national standards [1-5]. The work presents examples of experimental test results in three basie areas: intensity of the crash impact on the vehicle passengers, the impact on a vehicle and deformation of the road protective system. The test results have been presented in a form of courses of speeds and accelerations along the vehicle body axes x, y, z. Acceleration severity index (ASI), theoretical head impact velocity (THIV), post-impact head delay (PHD), vehicle cabin deformation index (VCDI) and deformation levels of the road protective system (W) have been also defined.

Opis:
In previous works the research team submitted [1-5] a series of numerical analysis of the car - road barrier dynamical system, directed to the elaboration of the numerical model methodology of an impact problem with the use of the chosen CAE programs. In this article there are presented the results of works on numerical implementation of crash tests of a car with the modified road barrier. The results are presented on the example of the Suzuki Swift car impact into the road barrier, which is equipped with the additional protective panel. The panel consists of the foamed aluminium plate whose fastening to the belt of the W-beam guardrail and a shield presented itself a thin-walled open profile made from the polyester-glass laminate. The whole construction was connected with the W-beam guardrail by riveting. The Geo Metro (Suzuki Swift) car, commonly available model from National Crash Analysis Centre (NCAC), was used for numerical analysis of the car-barrier system. Numerical analysis was carried out with the use of LS-Dyna system. The comparison of the time courses of acceleration, acting on the vehicle centre of gravity and the ways of the barrier and car deformation, achieved by the experimental and simulation ways, took place. The good qualitative and quantitative conformities in accelerations w archieved.

Opis:
The work describes methodology of selection of a prototype articulated joint used to connect the segments of the concrete protection barrier. The barrier and the joint have been made according to the original project of the authors of this paper. Dimensions of the component elements of the joint were defined on the basis of numerical calculations in LS-DYNA system, using finite element method. They also allowed to identify places sensible to damage. Based on the project, the experimental tests have been performed for the joint strength to stretching. The tests performed on the resistance machine showed improper technology and poor quality of welds joining individual elements, particularly the bolt with connecting steel. Results of these tests made the basis for introducing the changes to the project. Repeated tests confirmed their rightness. The final evaluation of quality and usefulness of the prototype articulated joint in the connections of movable protection barrier were defined during the crash tests on the test track of the Certified Research Laboratory of the Research Institute for Roads and Bridges. The crash tests were performed for selected collision criteria (TB11 and TB32), normal restrain level (N2), using three passengers cars. Applied concrete barrier test procedures are in accordance with the requirements of national standards, that make the equivalents of the European standards.

The paper presents problems related to dynamic loads of armoured personnel carriers design as well as soldiers located inside them. During tactical operation, there is often the need for ramming other vehicles or terrain obstacles in order to provide road possibility. The lack in armoured vehicles, commonly used in cars crumple zones, will result in large values of accelerations. This can cause significant risk to the crews of vehicles. In order to assess the exposure of soldiers while overcoming terrain and engineering obstacles experimental studies were performed covering a carrier’s collision with a rigid barrier and ramming of all-terrain vehicle. In the paper the research conditions and used measurement equipment were described. A four-wheel SKOT personnel carrier and Tarpan Honker car, out of service, was used for the tests. The tests were carried out within the area of the Military Institute for Armoured and Automotive Technology in Sulejówek. During crash tests, anthropomorphic measurement equipment – Hybrid III 50th Male Dummy type – was used for recording the values of loads affecting the soldiers. The article presents some results of experimental studies. The values of the carrier’s body accelerations in driver’s and landing troop compartment were compared as well as dynamic loads of test dummies. The results obtained during vehicle ramming prove that these types of actions do not cause serious threats for the members of the carrier crew.

In the study, the extensive validation of the original project of roll cage construction designed according to FIA standards is presented. In order to test the impact protection of the vehicle occupant site the verification of survival space was performed. For that purpose, a standardized manikin was utilized. The crashworthiness of the structure was examined by means of Finite Elements discrete model over a number of dynamic explicit simulations. The roll cage was in particularly designed for the passenger car. The important finding from the study is the need for additional side impact energy absorption ability of the cage.

The first design collision scenario includes such obstacle for railway vehicles operated on national and regional networks. A considered locomotive based on a popular Polish shunting locomotive – SM42. However, the tested locomotive was slightly modernized in comparison with the original one. The energy balance was initially checked in order to confirm the accuracy of analysis. The paper presents selected results of analyses focused on the locomotive frame behaviour. Contours of effective stress for selected moments of time are presented. Time histories of selected parameters are also depicted. The current study is a part of the project focused on modernization of the SM42 locomotive. Therefore, it is required to evaluate the locomotive behaviour during the impact test. In this article experimental results of a car impact into a modified road barrier are presented. For crash tests a modified protection barrier SP-04, composed of guide poles, type B, and bridge posts IPE140, was chosen. The road barrier modification lies in using additional panels absorbing the impact energy. The protective panels, subjected to examination, consisted of a metal or a composite (laminate, glass-polyester) shield in which the f o amed aluminium or polyurethane foam was a filling. The Suzuki Swift car s were prepared for the crash tests. Tests were carried out at the Automotive Industry Institute (PIMOT) in Warsaw, with the use o f a test sample of the road barrier. For the safety sake the car's speed during the experimental examinations was limited to 50 km/h. Moreover, the vehicle hits perpendicularly in a properly modified road barrier's sector. During the test a registration of acceleration was carried out by the acceleration sensors placed in the car (among others in the centre of gravity and over the rear axle of a car). A crash test course of the system C-G was registered with the use of two cameras for fast shooting (Fantom v12). An image was recorded with the resolution of 1280 x 800 pixels and with frequency of 1000 shots per second. The shot exposure time equalled to 250 microseconds.
