Opis:
The focus of this research work was predicting the fatigue life of mechanical components used for industrial and transport systems. To understand how the phenomenon of fatigue occurs in a material, the fatigue crack growth is studied. The purpose of this work was to create a graphical user interface (GUI) under Matlab to allow researchers to conduct the parametric studies of fatigue crack propagation to predict fatigue life. In this work, three models for fatigue crack propagation were used: those of Paris, Walker and Forman in order to study the three parameters: the Paris exponent m, load ratio R and hardness KIC, respectively. In addition, a novel model FCG was developed to study the influence of the hardening parameters (K′, n′) on fatigue crack propagation. The comparison of the simulation results with those in the literature shows good agreement.

Opis:
Over the last 60 years, several models have been developed governing different zones of fatigue crack growth from the threshold zone to final failure. The best known model is the Paris law and a number of its based on mechanical, metallurgical and loading parameters governing the propagation of cracks. This paper presents an analytical model developed to predict the fatigue crack propagation rate in the Paris regime, for different material properties, yield strength (σy), Young’s modulus (E) and cyclic hardening parameters (K’, n’) and their influence by variability. The cyclic plastic deformation at a crack tip or any other cyclic hardening rule may be used to reach this objective, for to investigate this influence, these properties of the model are calibrated using available experimental data in the literature. This FCGR model was validated on Al-alloys specimens under constant amplitude load and shows good agreement with the experimental results.

Badania początkowego okresu rozwoju pęknięć przeprowadzone za pomocą mikroskopu SEM pozwoliły ustalić miejsce inicjacji pęknięcia i mikromechanizm pękania blachy aluminiowej. Rozwój pęknięć na powierzchni próbek wyciętych z blachy rejestrowano metodą replik. Wykazano duży rozrzut prędkości pękania w przedziale rozwoju małych powierzchniowych pęknięć, który w blachach o grubości 3 mm sięga do 0,5 mm.
The paper deals with mechanism of small crack initiation and growth from a central hole for 2024-T3 Alclad aluminium alloy sheet under cyclic constant amplitude bending (R=0,1). It was established for 3-mm-thick sheet that surface short cracks do not exceed the length of 0,5 mm. Fatigue lifetime that corresponds to this crack length covers 20-25% of total lives of the specimens. The range of crack length was estimated for mechanistically small crack too. The microfacture analysis, made by using SEM microscope, revelated that in cladded sheet the crack source is located beneath a thin Alclad layer at the border with the matrix material. The quasi-cleavage mechanism of cracking was found in the spot of crack initiation as well as in the vicinity of the crack source and in the Alclad layer. This microfracture analysis revealed a complex shape of a crack head in a thin sheet as well.

A strip yield model implementation by the present authors is applied to predict fatigue crack growth observed in structural steel specimens under various constant and variable amplitude loading conditions. Attention is paid to the model calibration using the constraint factors in view of the dependence of both the crack closure mechanism and the material stress-strain response on the load history. Prediction capabilities of the model are considered in the context of the incompatibility between the crack growth resistance for constant and variable amplitude loading.

Opis:
Purpose: The aim of the proposed research is to create a calculation model of surface fatigue crack growth at the axle of railway wheelset working under operational loads. Design/methodology/approach: The energy approach of the fracture mechanics was used to formulate the calculation model of fatigue crack propagation at the wheelset axle surface. The method of least squares was used to determine the investigated material mechanical constants that the kinetic equations of the calculation model contain. The system of differential equations of crack growth kinetics was solved numerically using the Runge-Kutta method. Findings: On the basis of the energy approach of the fracture mechanics the calculation model of fatigue macrocrack growth in three-dimensional elastic-plastic body in case of a mixed-mode I+II+III macromechanism of fracture has been built. On the basis of the created calculation model, the kinetics of the growth of fatigue cracks was investigated both in the middle part of the wheelset axle and in the axle journal. Research limitations/implications: The results obtained on laboratory specimens should be tested during a real railway wheelset axle investigation. Practical implications: The created calculation model can be used in practice to formulate method of residual lifetime estimation of railway wheelset axle. Originality/value: It was shown, that surface crack kinetics depends not only on the crack initial area but also significantly depends on the crack edge geometry and comparatively small crack-like defects at the wheelset axle surface can reach critical sizes in comparatively short run. It has been found that mechanical shear stresses caused by the weight of the loaded railway wagon in the cross section of the wheelset axle journal can significantly accelerate the growth of the transverse fatigue crack at the axle surface, reducing the period of crack subcritical growth by about 20%.

Corrosion fatigue crack growth studies were conducted on eccentrically-loaded single edge notch tension specimens made of SA 333 Gr. 6 and SA 516 Gr. 70 carbon steels in water environment. The experiments were conducted using a ±250 kN capacity Universal Testing Machine under constant amplitude sinusoidal loading at a test frequency of 0.50 Hz and stress ratio of 0.1. The fabrication of test specimens and the experiments were carried out based on ASTM E 647 and ASTM E 1820. The crack initiation and growth were monitored and images were captured by using a digital camera at regular intervals of fatigue cycles. By using these images, the length of crack was measured. The tests were terminated when the uncracked portion of the specimens was insufficient to take further load. Crack growth rate and stress intensity factor range values were evaluated at incremental values of loading cycles and crack length. Using the crack growth rate vs. stress intensity factor range plots, best fit curves following power law in the form of Paris’ equation were obtained.

Opis:
After Vosikovsky (1975), the corrosion fatigue crack growth rate (CFCGR) characteristics have been divided into three regions. The region-III rates are very close to mechanical fatigue crack growth rates. CFCGR formulae, including the long-crack length effect (in region I only), the loading frequency effect (in region II only), and the saltwater temperature effect, have been proposed. It has been assumed that CFCGR is proportional to f –k, where f is the loading frequency and k is a constant. The averaged k-value for all steels of yield stress (YS) below 500 MPa, usually with ferrite-pearlite microstructures, is higher than that for YS > 500 MPa, usually with quenched and tempered microstructures. The temperature effect does not appear in region I below room temperature. In the remaining cases, that is, in region I for elevated temperatures and in region II for both low and elevated temperatures, the CFCGR increases with increasing temperature. Under a potential of –0.8 V, a long-crack-length effect, qualitatively similar to analogous effect for free corrosion conditions, appears.

This paper describes the problem of searching for the causes of damage in the form of rupture of a strength member of the main landing gear. There have been two incidents noted which both occurred during hangar storage. It should be pointed out that the two occurrences mentioned concern a particular aircraft currently in operation, and that these incidents occurred a few days after the last flight. This article presents part of the investigation process needed to determine the causes of cracks in the test item. The crack growth analysis of the pull rod was performed using the NASGRO software. In order to perform the calculations, the information was gathered during previously conducted material studies and flight tests.

Opis:
Fatigue is one of the main failure modes in marine structures, and it is caused by the strong cyclic characteristics of the loads they support. This failure mode is amplified in areas of high stress concentration, such as at the intersection of primary and secondary elements. In this paper, a two-phase study is proposed that compares numerical and experimental results using a digital image correlation technique. The described procedure establishes selection, design, and scantling criteria and provides recommendations for the design of the transverse structure using specimens with different geometries. These geometries correspond to different designs for the transverse primary structure that use a longitudinal secondary stiffener with variable thickness and longitudinal spacing to transverse in a dynamic and quasi-static regime. The stress state for this regime is calculated based on the biaxiality indication concept, which uses the fatigue phenomenon (safety factor and sensitivity curves) and fracture mechanics (parameters of the Paris crack propagation law, correlation value, and law of variation of the stress intensity factor).

Opis:
The article indicates that engineering design criteria do not provide measures to prevent failures; this is evidenced by the occurrence of many accidents. Fracture prevention criteria should be derived from the principles of fracture mechanics, what should be developed further. However, the current concepts of fracture mechanics, when properly applied, provide an opportunity to ensure the reliability of the structure or organise the supervision of expensive structures to ensure their safe operation. These methods of preventing damage can be divided into two large groups: 1) checking for the formation of cracks and 2) monitoring their development. Both methods are based on similar principles; it would be easier to explain them with examples. To ensure the safe operation of the pressure vessel used in the reactor, the maximum allowable initial crack size should be known. The size of this crack should not expand to a critical point during the entire operation of the reactor. Knowing how the process of crack propagation proceeds and how the structure behaves during failure, it is possible to calculate the critical size of the defect and, based on this, calculate the maximum allowable size of the crack at the beginning of operation. Proper inspection of the new vessel will eliminate the possibility of shells that are larger than the original size. Checking for the presence of cracks, and determining their rate of growth during operation, presents significant difficulties. Therefore, checks should be avoided during operation. If the fracture and crack growth calculations, as well as the initial checks, are carried out correctly, then checks made during operation are an optional extra. However, in practice, such checks should still be performed. For vessels used in reactors, remote observation of crack growth using ultrasonic waves is a particularly useful method. If a crack is found, measures must be taken to either repair or replace the partially destroyed element.

The paper presents the attempt to predict fatigue crack growth rate in a component subjected to variable amplitude loading containing overload-underload cycles. For this goal in a deterministic approach the modified Willenborg retardation model was applied. To provide experimental data the research into fatigue crack growth for 2024-T3 aluminum alloy sheet CCT specimens under LHL type block program loading with multiple overload-underload cycles was developed. The microfractographic analysis of fatigue fractures with the use of the transmission electron microscope (TEM) made it possible to trace the effect of block program loading on the crack growth rate. The knowledge of the affection of a particular overloadunderload cycle or a block of these cycles on crack rate on the basis of microfractographic analysis was utilized for assessing the equivalent loading for the LHL block program. The diagrams that presented the crack growth rate both on the surface and inside the aluminum alloy sheet was performed. The crack growth rate inside the sheet was estimated on the basis of the striation spacing analysis.

This work aims to study the stress corrosion crack growth behavior of cold-rolled Alloy 690 in the primary water of a pressurized water reactor. Compared with Alloy 600, which shows typical intergranular cracking along high angle grain boundaries, the cold-rolled Alloy 690, with its heterogeneous microstructure, revealed an abnormal crack growth behavior in mixed mode, that is, in transgranular cracking near a banded region, and in intergranular cracking in a matrix region. From local strain distribution analysis based on local mis-orientation, measured along the crack path using the electron back scattered diffraction method, it was suggested that the abnormal behavior was attributable to a heterogeneity of local strain distribution. In the cold-rolled Alloy 690, the stress corrosion crack grew through a highly strained area formed by a prior cold-rolling process in a direction perpendicular to the maximum principal stress applied during a subsequent stress corrosion cracking test.

Aluminum alloys are widely used for fabrication of aircraft, civil structures, and space vehicles. Fatigue life consideration of a material is the most important design criteria in many such critical applications. In this research work, a widely used Aluminum alloy AA2219-T87 was TIG welded using AA2319 as a filler material. The effect of natural aging on Fatigue Crack Propagation Rate (FCPR) of welded and non-welded compact tension (CT) specimens (AA2219˗T87) is studied. The relationship between stress intensity factor (ΔK) and crack ratio (a/W) for different value of the crack length in base metal and the welded zone is presented. Paris curves for both welded and non-welded specimens and compared to study the effect of natural aging (NA) on FCGR and compared with non-aged specimens. The results obtained provide a base for the development of Structural Health Monitoring systems for the propagation of crack growth in such components.

Research in the field of fracture mechanics and determination of material characteristics are used for practical purposes, such as the assessment of static and dynamic strength of structural components, analysis of their fatigue life or extending the life span of their operation. A structural component, considered to be safe from fatigue cracking point of view, was investigated and results were presented in this article. In particular, an analysis was made to determine the stress intensity factor for the cracked wing flap construction, based on static and fatigue tests, using the Irwin-Kies theory. The flap with a service crack was subjected to fatigue tests with a load similar to the one registered during flight measurements. The flap without a service crack was subjected to static tests, after cutting the cracks of specified lengths and shapes (similar to the service crack) in the skin of the flap. The article presents changing the length of the flap crack in subsequent load cycles, change in the maximum values of force and the crack opening displacement in subsequent load cycles, dependence of P-COD in the first and second stage of fatigue testing of the wing flap, dependence of the wing flap compliance on the length of the crack and experimentally determined dependence for wing flap. The occurrence of a flap crack up to approximately 230 mm does not cause a significant growth of the stress intensity factor.

The aim of this study is to investigate the fatigue crack growth behavior with post weld heat treatments (T4) on transverse tungsten inert gas-welded Aluminum alloy 6013. All fatigue tests have been carried out using center cracked tension specimens at ambient temperature under a stress ratio of R = 0.3. The results revealed that various time of aging in T4 affects its mechanical properties, also the fatigue crack growth behavior as well. It has been observed that in the heat treated samples the crack growth rate is lower than that in the as-welded sample, but higher than the rate in the base metal. To be more specific, samples with 18 hours aging exhibit the highest tensile strength and fatigue resistance compared to the other heat treated samples. The probability assessment has also been used to determine the fatigue crack growth rate and a good linearity has been found.
