Opis:: Selected biological and morphometric characters of two populations of the nonindigenous Chinese mitten crab,one from the Szczecin Lagoon (SL) and the other from San Francisco Bay (SFB),b oth sampled in autumn, were analysed. The SL crabs showed a significantly higher individual weight,l ength and carapace width. Males accounted for 55% (87 individuals) of the 179 SL crabs,an d 62.9% (90 individuals) of the SFB crabs. Statistical analysis of metric characters,expr essed as a percentage of carapace width (X2),en abled four diagnostic characters to be identified: abdomen width (X11),carapace height (X3),left claw length (X7) and carapace length (X1). These jointly explain 71.75% of the differences between the SL and SFB crabs and are indicative of the distinctness of the populations.

Opis:: A newcomer to the Baltic Sea, the Chinese mitten crab is especially abundant in the Szczecin Lagoon (NW Poland), where it was first reported in 1927. Body weight, and carapace width and length, were studied in 647 individuals collected with fyke nets in the Szczecin Lagoon from 30 March – 18 April2001 and from 5–21 November 2001. 51.01% of the 543 autumn specimens were males, but only 30.97% of the 113 spring specimens were males. Body weight varied from 45.1 to 306.5 g, carapace length from 41.07 to 81.02 mm and carapace width from 46.68 to 88.85 mm. The autumn crabs were significantly heavier than the spring specimens.

Opis:: This work presents, for the first time, the extraction and characterization of chitin from the shell of the freshwater crab species Potamon algeriense with a standardized and revised chemical method. Chitin and chitosan were isolated following demineralization, deproteinization, decolouration (raw chitin), and deacetylation (chitosan). After boiling, drying, and grinding, 62.12% of the ground shell was obtained. A yield of 40.92% was obtained after demineralization of ground crab shell, while after the deproteinization process 8.74% was obtained. After decolourization, 8.27% of raw chitin was obtained, and the final amount of chitosan extracted from the crab shells was approximately 5.89%. We also characterized the isolated chitin by determining its physicochemical properties using X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA).

Opis:: The Bahia Blanca Estuary includes a large tidal plain with an area close to 1150 km2.Mud is predominant in its sediments, where a significant population of the crab Chasmagnathus granulata lives during the whole year.Mo reover, there are important urban and industrial discharges into this environment. Cd and Pb concentrations were determined in samples of water (for both dissolved and suspended particulate matter) and surface sediments (total and <63 μm fractions).Or ganic matter was analysed in the sediments, while temperature, salinity, pH and dissolved oxygen were measured in the estuarine water The metal concentrations determined in this study were: 1.47 ± 1.08 μg Cd g−1 and 14.68 ± 4.31 μg Pb g−1 in surface sediments; 2.21 ± 1.33 μg Cd g−1 and 25.70 ± 7.09 μg Pb g−1 in the <63 μm sediment fraction; 0.18 ± 0.11 μg Cd g−1 and below the analytical detection limit of Pb in suspended particulate matter. Furthermore, dissolved Cd and Pb were lower than the norms for marine and estuarine waters (2 μg dm−3 for Cd and 5 μg dm−3 for Pb, E.P.A.). Simultaneously, the effects of Cd and Pb were studied on recently hatched larvae of Ch. granulata, through 96-hour semi-static acute assays.Via bility was the criterion assessed in the assays.LC 50 (96 h) for Cd was 46.43 μg dm−3 (36.92 − 56.34 μg dm−3), whilst that for Pb was 1. 0 mg dm−3 (0.79 − 1.23 mg dm−3), which demonstrates that Cd is more toxic towards larvae.F inally, both LC50 values determined for Cd and Pb were higher than the corresponding metal concentrations measured in the Bah´ıa Blanca environment.

The article presents the project of building a 6- foot walking robot - Crab. Each of the robot leg is telescopically extendable by a DC motor with worm gear and transverse movements performed with the built servomechanism. The article includes a description of the sequence of movements of individual crab legs , the way it is moving straight ahead and turn in both directions. Constructed robot will be used to inspect the chassis buses and lorries.

Opis:: On the basis of carapaces, three new genera and species of symmetrical paguroid anomurans are described. Diogenicheles theodorae, Masticacheles longirostris, and Pilgrimcheles karolinae constitute the oldest known members of the family Parapylochelidae. As noted previously, assemblages from sponge−reefal strata of Oxfordian (Late Jurassic) age in the southern Polish Uplands document an important radiation event amongst paguroids. Compared to the present day, the Parapylochelidae were more diverse during the mid−Mesozoic; they appear to have withdrawn from shallow, reefal waters to deep−water settings from the Late Jurassic onwards. Paguroid faunas from the Oxfordian of Europe already are highly diverse, both morphologically and phylogenetically, and comprise early members of the families Diogenidae, Pylochelidae, and Parapylochelidae. This suggests that the evolutionary history of paguroids started much earlier (i.e., in pre−Jurassic times) than previously assumed. New terms for several typical paguroid carapace regions are introduced and on the basis of carapace morphology and ecological shifts hypotheses on the early speciation of hermit crabs are put forward.

Opis:: A new species of diogenid paguroid, Eopaguropsis nidiaquilae, the earliest known member of the family to date, is recorded from sponge−reefal strata of Oxfordian (Late Jurassic) age in the southern Polish Uplands. Morphological features of the carapace suggest that the family Diogenidae diverged from other paguroid lineages such as the Pylochelidae and Parapaguridae, long before the Oxfordian Stage (161.2–155.7 Ma). The typically deep, V−shaped cervical groove of diogenids most likely was the product of fusion of the branchiocardiac and cervical grooves of their predecessors.

Opis:: Strata with cyanobacterial−sponge buildups of Middle to Late Oxfordian (Late Jurassic) age in the southern Polish Uplands document the earliest known members of the Pylochelidae. Two new Late Jurassic species of “symmetrical” hermit crabs, Ammopylocheles robertboreki and Jurapylocheles iwonae, are described. A new term, the massetic region, is introduced to describe the equivalent in paguroids of the hepatic region in brachyuran carapaces, because in the former, this region does not reflect the position of the liver but rather an attachment zone of the mandibular muscles.

Opis:: The feeding ecology of the American crab Rhithropanopeus harrisii Gould, 1841 from brackish waters of the Baltic Sea was studied by analyses of the stomach repletion index (SRI) and stomach content with regard to sex, size and habitat (Dead Vistula River and the Gulf of Gdańsk). Neither the sex nor the size of an individual crab had a significant (P>0.05) influence on the SRI or on the diversity of food items found in the stomachs of R. harrisii. But the type of food consumed was significantly (P<0.05) dependent on the locality inhabited: the greater the biodiversity of the habitat, the richer the dietary composition. In Baltic coastal waters this species feeds on detritus, and also on animal and plant matter. Remains of Chlorophyta, Amphipoda, Ostracoda, Polychaeta, Gastropoda and Bivalvia were found in the stomachs of the specimens analysed.
