Opis:
Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), which can lead to severe respiratory failure, has become a real threat to pregnancy. Although vertical transmission of the virus through the placenta appears to be rare, there is increasing evidence that a SARS-CoV-2 infection may cause complications during pregnancy. We report a case of COVID-19 in a pregnancy complicated by fetal pleural effusion in the third trimester of pregnancy. To our knowledge, only 4 similar cases have been reported to date. A 29-year-old woman in the 37th week of pregnancy admitted to the department of pregnancy pathology due to right fetal pleural effusion. In the 34th week of pregnancy, the patient suffered from COVID-19 with symptoms of fever and general weakness. The infection was confirmed by reverse-transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR). At 38 weeks, vaginal delivery occurred. The male newborn with a 6/7/8 point Apgar score required continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) breathing assistance and was transferred to the intensive care unit. The rapid antigen test was negative. The ultrasound showed collapse of the right lung compressed by fluid in the pleural cavity. Inflammation, congenital TORCH and group B Coxsackie virus infection, chromosomal disorders and anatomical defects were excluded. During hospitalization 850 ml of lymphatic fluid was drained. We suspect a possible causal relationship between non-immune fetal hydrops and coronavirus disease.

Opis:
The article aims to assess the adequacy of state aid provided to Polish enterprises during the COVID-19 pandemic. The research sample encompasses 21,687 non-financial enterprises classified as large, medium, and small, accounting for 32.7% of all non-financial enterprises in Poland falling into these groups. The article develops an original method for measuring the justification and accuracy of state aid directed to enterprises in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, utilising changes in firms’ sales revenues. The conducted analyses confirmed that the level of effectiveness of support policies varied significantly across economic sectors. In the first year of the pandemic, support policies were most effective in sectors P (education), Q (healthcare and social assistance), and I (accommodation and food service activities). In the second and third years of the pandemic, sectors Q and E (water supply; sewerage, waste management, and remediation activities) exhibited the highest effectiveness. The analyses also led to the conclusion that sectors with lower average firm size measured by sales revenues demonstrated higher effectiveness of support policies.

Opis:
Background To evaluate incidence and search for possible predictors of brain fog and quality of life at work (QoL-W) among low-to-moderate risk subjects previously hospitalized due to COVID-19. Material and Methods Participants aged ≥18 retrospectively reported 8 brain fog symptoms pre-COVID-19, at 0–4, 4–12 and >12 weeks post-infection via validated clinical questionnaire. The QoL-W was assessed with a 4-point Likert scale where 0, 1, 2, and 3 meant no, mild, moderate, and severe impairment in performing activities at work, respectively. Data on age, sex, comorbidities, and laboratory results (including first in-hospital high-sensitivity cardiac troponin I [hs-cTnI] measurement) were gathered. Results The study included 181 hospitalized subjects (age Me = 57 years), 37.02% women. Most had low disease severity (Modified Early Warning Score = 1, 77.90%) and low comorbidity (Charlson Comorbidity Index 0: 28.72%, 1–2: 34.09%), with no intensive care unit treatment needed. COVID-19 led to almost 3-fold increased brain fog symptoms, with incidence of 58.56%, 53.59%, and 49.17% within 4, 4–12, and >12 weeks, respectively (p < 0.001). First in-hospital hs-cTnI levels were 47.3% higher in participants who later presented with brain fog at median follow-up of 26.7 weeks since the diagnosis of the SARS-CoV-2 infection. Individuals who experienced at least one brain fog symptom at follow-up, had elevated hs-cTnI, less often presented with atrial fibrillation, and used anticoagulants during initial hospitalization due to COVID-19. The Hs-cTnI >11.90 ng/l predicted brain fog symptoms in multivariable model. COVID-19 was associated with 3.6‑fold, 3.0‑fold, and 2.4-fold QoL-W deterioration within 4, 4–12, and >12 weeks post-infection (p < 0.05). Subjects with QoL-W decline >12 weeks were younger, mostly women, had more brain fog symptoms, and higher platelet counts. Multivariable models with self-reported brain fog symptoms (responding coherently and recalling recent information), age, and sex exhibited good discriminatory power for QoL-W impairment (area under the receiver operating characteristic curve 0.846, 95% CI: 0.780–0.912). Conclusions This study highlighted that in non-high-risk subjects hospitalized during the first 2 pandemic’s waves: 1) brain fog was common, affecting nearly half of individuals, and impacting QoL-W >12 weeks after initial infection, 2) after 3 months of COVID-19 onset, the decline in QoL-W was primarily attributed to brain fog symptoms rather than demographic factors, health conditions, admission status, and laboratory findings, 3) components of brain fog, such as answering in an understandable way or recalling new information increased the likelihood of significantly lower QoL-W up to tenfold, 4) biochemical indicators, such as the first hs-cTnI level, might predict the risk of experiencing brain fog symptoms and indirectly decreased QoL-W >12 weeks after COVID-19 onset. Occupational medicine practitioners should pay particular attention to younger and female subjects after COVID-19 complaining of problems with answering questions in understandable way or recalling new information as they have an increased risk of QoL-W impairment.

Opis:
Background COVID-19 vaccines for public use were approved at the turn of 2020 and 2021. The level of vaccination coverage against COVID-19 in Poland is one of the lowest in Europe. Despite scientific studies there are people who are afraid of vaccinations and spread false information about them. Vaccinations against COVID-19 allowed to learn about the attitudes of people who decided to be vaccinated, which can be used to improve the effectiveness of the infectious diseases prevention in the work and public environment. The aim of the study was to analyze the main reasons determining a decision to get vaccinated against COVID-19. Material and Methods The study was carried on among all the people who decided to be vaccinated against COVID-19 in Nofer Institute of Occupational Medicine in Łódź. All vaccinated people completed an anonymous survey containing questions related to the most important factors, which encouraged them to undergo this vaccination. Results The study involved 945 people vaccinated against COVID-19. Statistical significance was revealed between 3 different reasons (one’s own health, stress-free work, safe travelling and easier access to entertainment) for getting vaccinated and age, gender and a form of employment. The authors also found statistical significance of the correlation between the age, gender, education and form of employment of the respondents and the reason for choosing the specific vaccine product. Conclusions Despite evidence presented by scientists about the effectiveness and safety of vaccinations, many people refused and still refuse to receive the vaccine. In order to increase the readiness of the population for vaccinations against COVID-19 and subsequent ones, if there is a need to limit new epidemics, the following should be done: introduce activities to raise health awareness, intensify strategies and campaigns aimed at increasing public trust in available vaccines against COVID-19, devolop individualized messages that contribute to vaccine hesitancy.

Opis:
Pandemics affect millions of people and cause many deaths worldwide. Undoubtedly, the most affected vulnerable group in the epidemic has been the elderly. The elderly population is a very heterogeneous population with various combinations of geriatric syndromes, comorbidities, and disabilities. According to the WHO report, 89% of the mortality in the COVID-19 virus is seen in individuals aged 65 and over, called the elderly. For older people, the risk of transmission is higher due to the health conditions associated with aging. The weak immune system in the elderly and the advanced state of chronic diseases can cause COVID-19 disease to be experienced more severely. The social isolation measure of the elderly during the COVID-19 process has caused physiological, physical and psychological problems. At the same time, due to the social isolation measure, the routine treatment plans of the elderly were disrupted and they were deprived of the necessary treatment. The aim of this study is to address the physiological, physical and psychological problems experienced by the elderly during the pandemic process and to determine the effects of the pandemic on the elderly.

Opis:
The main aim of the article is to determine which neologisms were created in the German language at the time of the COVID-19 pandemic in the field of education. The choice to focus on education and school concepts is based on the fact that it is considered one of the fundamental areas of people’s lives. Since schooling is compulsory in Germany, this topic affects every citizen. The structure of the article is as follows: first, the pandemic-related changes in the field of education are briefly discussed. Next, the term neologism is explained in more detail, as well as the functions and the types of neologisms that can be distinguished. The core of the article is the presentation and discussion of the results of the empirical analysis. 81 neologisms from the field of education created during the coronavirus pandemic were subjected to the analysis. They refer to various branches of the education system and name, among other things, periods of time, but also persons and school concepts, which is why they were assigned to eight semantic categories: Change of the education system, evaluation of learning outcomes, character of learning and teaching, description of a particular period, description of individuals, feelings, support and final evaluation. Within the groups, antonyms and synonyms could be found. The article also explains the reasons for the creation of the neologisms.

Opis:
Background Nurses constitute a crucial professional group within the healthcare system. Job satisfaction and opportunities for professional development directly impact the quality of medical services provided and help prevent burnout. The study aimed to assess the preferred career model, the level of job satisfaction, and determine the type of work-related behavior presented by Polish nurses. Material and Methods A cross-sectional survey was conducted among 795 nurses after the COVID-19 pandemic. Three standardized scales were used: My Career questionnaire to access the preferred career model, the Job Satisfaction Scale, and Work‑Related Behavior and Experience Patterns (Arbeitsbesorgenes Verhaltens und Erlebenmuster – AVEM) questionnaire assessing types of work-related behavior. Descriptive statistics, Spearman’s correlation coefficient, and multiple linear regression were used for analysis of data. Results The results concerning the relationship between the types of work-related behavior, job satisfaction, and the preferred career model revealed that type G (healthy) was significantly and positively correlated (p < 0.05, r > 0) with the Challenge subscale of the career model (r = 0.095, p = 0.007) and job satisfaction (r = 0.136, p < 0.001). The higher the score on the Challenge subscale and greater job satisfaction, the more pronounced type G personality. The multiple linear regression models explained only 2.5 to 5% of the variability of studied questionnaire outcomes but indicated that significant, independent predictors for the My Career questionnaire subscales and AVEM raw scales for each type were additional qualifications, level of education, work experience, and place of work. Significant predictors of the job satisfaction scale were employment in private healthcare facilities and a master’s degree. Conclusions Nurses experience job satisfaction, but the workload, demanding daily tasks, and the sense of responsibility can lead them to feel fatigued and burnt out. The preferred career model involves Security and Stability, as well as Service and Commitment to other domains. Only a small percentage of the variability in the results of the analyzed dependent variables was explained by the explanatory variables included in the model.

Opis:
Purpose – We conceptualized the novel phenomenon of COVID-induced virtual teams and its implications and provided researchers with the required information on how to conduct a phenomenon-based study for conceptualizing novel phenomena in relevant ways. Design/methodology/approach – This article stems from phenomenon-based and, thus, theory-building and grounded qualitative research in the German industrial sector. We conducted 47 problem-centered interviews in two phases (February–July 2021 and February–July 2022) to understand how team members and team leaders experienced COVID-induced virtual teamwork and its subsequent developments. Findings – Empirically, we found COVID-induced virtual teams to be characterized by a high relevance of shaping positive team dynamics via steering internal moderators; crisis is a novel external moderator and transformation becomes the key output factor to be leveraged. Work-from-home leads to specific configuration needs and interrelations between work-from-home and on-site introduce additional dynamics. Methodologically, the phenomenon-based approach is found to be highly suitable for studying the effects of such novel phenomena. Research limitations/implications – This article is explorative. Thus, we advocate further research on related novel phenomena, such as post-COVID-hybrid and work-from-home teams. A model of how to encourage positive dynamics in post-COVID-hybrid teams is developed and lays the groundwork for further studies on post-COVID teamwork. Concerning methodology, researchers are provided with information on how to conduct phenomenon-based research on novel phenomena, such as the COVID-induced virtual teams that we studied. Practical implications – Companies receive advice on how to encourage positive dynamics in post-COVID teamwork, e.g. on identifying best practices and resilient individuals. Social implications – In a country such as Germany that faces labor shortages, our insights might facilitate better labor-market integration for those with care-work obligations and international workers. Originality/value – We offer a first conceptualization of a relevant novel phenomenon, namely COVID- induced virtual teams. We exemplify the phenomenon-based approach as a suitable methodology that serves to build relevant theory using active categorization.

The aim of this article is to present the risk factors for dysphagia in patients infected with SARS-CoV-2 based on available sources, both domestic and foreign. Swallowing disorders are a common symptom among patients hospitalised for COVID 19. Dysphagia has been shown to be an independent predictor of in-hospital mortality, prolonged hospitalisation, and is associated with an unfavourable prognosis in these patients. Therefore, learning about the mechanisms and factors causing swallowing disorders is very important and should be well understood. The aetiology of dysphagia in COVID-19 is multifactorial. Both the presence of risk factors for progression to severe infection, changes in the body as a result of the disease, and the treatment used can account for swallowing difficulties.

A 25-year-old man with a hip dislocation and Pipkin II type femoral head fracture, whose surgical treatment was postponed for 15 days due to Covid 19 pandemic, is described. For 2 months after surgery, treatment was supported by therapy in a hyperbaric chamber and with a continuous passive motion (CPM) splint. Four months after surgery, bone fusion of the femoral head fracture was achieved with its normal revascularization. Two years after the operation, the patient was moving efficiently and had no complaints of hip pain. Delayed open reduction and internal fixation of the femoral head fracture resulted in a very good functional and radiological outcome.

The COVID-19 pandemic has affected the functioning of the entire economy. However, the strength of the impact was not uniform across sectors, with some affected more severely and others only slightly. Due to its importance, agribusiness is of particular interest. Therefore, the aim of the publication is to assess the economic and financial condition of farms in Poland and Czechia during the COVID-19 pandemic. The study covered the 2017–2021 period. The economic and financial condition was established on the basis of the following volumes and values of indicators: total output, prices of products and inputs, export and import volumes, productivity, profitability and debt ratios. The study includes data from national statistics and the FADN agricultural accounting system and concerns two EU countries, mentioned above. Chain indices were used to show trends, while the financial analysis includes selected productivity, profitability, and debt ratios. Calculations were carried out for average values of farms and divided into economic size classes. The results indicate that the agricultural sector was not particularly vulnerable to the COVID-19 pandemic crisis in terms of changes in output, which was mainly influenced by weather factors. What did change were the higher prices of agricultural raw materials and inputs (fertilizers, fuels, feed) in 2021. In Poland the growth dynamics of the prices of sold products surpassed that of inputs, in Czechia the proportions were reversed. This translated into the values of financial indicators. In general, they improved in Poland, while in Czechia 2021 turned out to be less favourable financially. Comparing different economic classes, in Poland the results for small farms were relatively good, in Czechia the larger entities fared better under the crisis conditions.

Opis:
Recent papers and studies over the course of last three years have shown that COVID-19 has a negative impact on the speech communication quality between people. This paper presents an influence analysis of the curvature shape of protective transparent shields on the speech signal. Five shields made of the same material and dimensions but with different curvatures were analyzed, from a completely flat to a very curved shield which has the same shape of curvature at its top and bottom and covers the entire face. The influence of the shield is analyzed with two types of experiments – one using dummy head with integrated artificial voice device, and the other using real speakers (female and male actors). It has been shown that usage of protective shields results in a relative increase in the speech signal level, in the frequency range of around 1000 Hz, compared to the situation when protective shields are not used. The relative increase in speech signal levels for large-curvature shields can be up to 8 dB. The possible causes of this phenomenon have been analyzed and examined.

Opis:
The study was conducted in Ukraine during the onset of COVID-19 pandemic. The sample contained 232 individuals. The aim was to study emotional experiences and their connection with coping strategies in the context of gender differences. The research was based on the concept of differential emotions, and on the understanding of the accumulation strategies as a dynamic process, which is determined by personal prepositions and situational factors. Measures used in the study were the Differential Emotions Scale and the Ways of Coping Questionnaire. The growth of negative experiences and stress at the beginning of the pandemic among men and women was confirmed. We described the differences regarding emotions and coping strategies. Women use emotion-focused strategies of social support, strategies of positive reappraisal of the situation, and avoidance, the acceptance of responsibility among women is associated with negative emotions. We found that women more frequently use two or more coping strategies compared to men. A different emotional basis of coping strategies, expressed at high levels of tension among men and women, was revealed. The defined features of coping behavior among men and women may help to determine the main goals for the development of preventive and psychotherapeutic interventions.

The ethos of the journalist is based on his representations of the public space. Updated in the discourse, they participate in the construction of citizen identity. This is what we show through an enunciative analysis of editorials from the daily “Le Monde” during the Covid-19 pandemic crisis. The analysis highlights an increasingly marked identity divide during the crisis.

Opis:
The purpose of the article. The aim of the article is to present factors influencing foreign exchange rates and to examine the relationship between them and stock and bond indices in Switzerland in the period before and during the COVID-19 pandemic. The hypothesis that the studied relationships changed as a result of the turmoil caused by the pandemic crisis was verified. Methodology. To verify the hypothesis, linear and non-linear functions were analyzed, and Pearson's correlation indices between the examined instruments were calculated. Results of the research. As a result of the analysis, it was found that the relationship between the CHF exchange rate index and stock indices is non-linear, and the relationship between the CHF exchange rate index and bond indices is linear. Correlation coefficients before the pandemic indicated strong relationships between the CHF exchange rate index and the examined capital market indices, and moreover, the relationship with stock indices was positive and with bond indices negative. It was found that during the pandemic, the correlation with bond indices changed and became positive. The motivation of the analysis is related to the spotlight on a Swiss franc as a result of numerous financial decisions related to this currency.
