    Opis:
    Alternate history, the type of fiction which describes worlds in which history developed differently than in reality, is often depreciated as a subgenre of science–fiction. Yet Polish alternate history novels are in reality an interesting commentary on polish culture, history and memory. In this paper I present the subject–matter of Polish alternate history novels, their functions and their relevance to Polish culture. In the first part I describe the history of counterfactual thinking and historians’ attitude towards it. In the second part, I emphasize that there are two types of alternate history. I name them “non-fiction” and “fiction”. Next, I provide the definition of alternate history. In the third part of the article I describe functions of alternate history novels. These functions show clearly that they are not created for entertainment only. On the contrary, they comment on important features of Polish culture.

    Der Beitrag untersucht Paulus Hochgatterers 2017 erschienene Erzählung Der Tag, an dem mein Großvater ein Held war als spezifisch literarischen Beitrag zur gegenwärtigen österreichischen Erinnerungskultur bzgl. der nationalsozialistischen Verbrechen. Die besondere Herangehensweise des Textes an das in der österreichischen Literatur spätestens seit den 1980er Jahren notorische Thema wird dabei an der räumlichen Situierung des Geschehens im Hinterland, der zeitlichen Situierung im „Ausnahmezustand“ (G. Agamben) der letzten Kriegswochen, vor allem aber in dem erzählerischen Entwurf von Alternativszenarien festgemacht.
    The article examines Paulus Hochgatterers story Der Tag, an dem mein Großvater ein Held war (2017) as specific literary contribution to contemporary Austrian memory culture, especially concerning the remembrance of the crimes of national socialism. The text’s particular approach to the subject, which is notorious in Austria at least since the 1980s, can be seen in the topographical positioning of the events in the backup area, their temporal positioning in the “state of exception” (G. Agamben) of the last weeks of WW II and especially in the narrative construction of alternative scenarios.

    The author is of the opinion that in the late 20th a nd e arly 21st centuries we e xperience a peculiar restitution of history in miscellaneous literary types and trends, one example of which could be the output by Konrad T. Lewandowski. The main purpose of the article is to present the methods of ‘utilising history’ in his retro crime stories. Having demonstrated the features of the genre, Tierling-Śledź goes on to trace back various types of historical probability in Lewandowski’s works, his transitions from historical facts to ‘unexisting history’. She also poses a question about the consequences of handling history in such a fashion for the reader of historical prose in the early 21st century.
    Autorka artykułu wyraża przekonanie, iż na przełomie XX i XXI wieku spotykamy się ze swoistą restytucją historii w różnych odmianach i nurtach literatury, czego dowodem może być między innymi twórczość Konrada T. Lewandowskiego. Celem artykułu jest ukazanie sposobów „użytkowania historii” w kryminałach retro tego autora. Po przedstawieniu wyznaczników gatunku, badaczka śledzi obecne w powieściach Lewandowskiego różne odmiany historycznego prawdopodobieństwa, przechodzenie autora od prawdy historycznej do „historii niebyłej”. Stawia też pytanie o konsekwencje takiego operowania historią dla odbiorcy prozy historycznej u progu XXI wieku.

    The author of the article is of the opinion that at the turn of the 20th and 21st centuries there was a growing interest in various types of popular literature, including alternative history. Upon reminding us of the terminological differences between alternative (alternate) history and counterfactual (virtual) history, she goes on to discuss alternative histories by Konrad T. Lewandowski and concludes that in his books, while playing an entertaining role, alternative history still remains the teacher of life.
    Autorka artykułu wyraża przekonanie, iż na przełomie XX i XXI wieku wzrosło zainteresowanie odmianami literatury popularnej, w tym historią alternatywną. Po przypomnieniu rozróżnień terminologicznych pomiędzy historią alternatywną i historią kontrfaktyczną przystępuje ona do omówienia historii alternatywnych Konrada T. Lewandowskiego. Badaczka dochodzi do wniosku, że w książkach Konrada Lewandowskiego historia alternatywna, pełniąc funkcję ludyczną, nie przestaje być nauczycielką życia.

    W artykule zinterpretowano ostatnią publikację Doris Lessing Alfred i Emily – patchworkowy utwór, na który składają się fragmenty definicji słownikowych i encyklopedycznych, wybrane cytaty z utworów literackich, a także wspomnienie o bracie pisarki. Zasadniczo książka ta dzieli się na dwie części. Pierwszą tworzy zmyślona biografia rodziców, drugą – wspomnienia o nich i o życiu w buszu, które uzupełniają część pierwszą o fakty historyczne i momenty przełomowe dla całej rodziny. Budując alternatywną opowieść o rodzicach, Lessing tworzy auto/biografię kontrfaktyczną, ponieważ eliminuje z życia rodziców jeden fakt historyczny, który znacząco wpłynął na ich życie i naznaczył ich los bolesnymi stratami. Skupiając się właśnie na roku 1914, Lessing testuje tym samym pomysły Nialla Fergusona, czołowego brytyjskiego twórcy historii wirtualnej, który przeciwstawia się marksistowskiemu widzeniu historiozofii i wskazuje na przypadkowość dziejów świata.
    The article presents an interpretation of Doris Lessing’s last novel Alfred and Emily – a patchwork created from fragments of dictionary definitions and encyclopaedic entries, a selection of literary quotes and a memoir about the writer’s brother. Broadly, the book is divided into two parts: the first part is a fictitious biography of the author’s parents, whereas the second part contains memories about them and their life in the bush. The second one supplements the first part with historical facts and critical moments from the family’s life. By constructing an alternative story about her parents, Lessing creates a counterfactual auto/biography by eliminating one historical fact which had impact on their lives and brought painful losses. By focusing precisely on the year 1914, Lessing tests ideas put forward by the British virtual history champion Niall Ferguson, who, contrary to Marxist historiosophy, postulates that the history of the world is contingent.

    Celem artykułu jest analiza wybranych przykładów alternatywnej historii literatury, obecnych w powieściach z gatunku historii alternatywnych oraz w naukowych pracach z zakresu historii literatury. Szczegółową analizę poprzedza zdiagnozowanie obecnego stanu historii literatury jako nauki, zwłaszcza w kontekście postulowanej od jakiegoś czasu konieczności gruntownej przebudowy tej dziedziny, otwarcia jej na nowe rejony badawcze i wezwania do postawienia zupełnie nowych pytań. Zdaniem autorki dociekania probabilistyczne mogą stać się dla historii literatury interesującym narzędziem badawczym, lub chociażby eksperymentem poznawczym, pozwalającym na pełniejsze zrozumienie natury procesu twórczego czy tak ważkich dla historii literatury kwestii, jak periodyzacja, formowanie się epok i prądów literackich oraz problemu determinizmu i przypadku w procesie historycznoliterackim. Szczególnie interesujące — i to zarówno dla historyków, jak i teoretyków literatury — może być wyobrażenie sobie alternatywnych biografii literackich. Analizie poddane zostaną tu m.in. następujące powieści z zakresu historii alternatywnych: P’S Correspondence Nathaniela Hawthorne’a, Maszyna różnicowa Bruce’a Sterlinga i Williama Gibsona, Muza dalekich podróży Teodora Parnickiego, Widma. Historia Polski bez Powstania Warszawskiego Łukasza Orbitowskiego czy Dumanowski Wita Szostaka.
    The aim of the article is to analyze the alternative history of literature presented in alternative history novels as well as in scholarly and journalistic studies in literary history. First, important proposals for renewing/reviving/modernizing and rethinking the scope and methodology of literary history, for opening it to new areas, asking new question and reorganizing the structure and manners of writing it are discussed. It is suggested that probabilistic inquiry in the field of literary history may be seen as an important and innovative tool for understanding the nature of the creative process, the formation of movements in literary history and its periodization, and, last but not least, the nature of necessity and coincidence therein. For literary historians as well as for theoreticians of literature, imagining altered biographies of famous writers and poets may be an interesting experiment. The richest material for such counterfactual deliberations is provided by alternative history novels; therefore, the following works are analyzed — P’s Correspondence by N. Hawthorne, Different Engine by W. Gibson & B. Sterling, Muza dalekich podróży by T. Parnicki, Widma. Historia Polski bez Powstania Warszawskiego by Ł Orbitowski, Dumanowski by W. Szostak.
