Opis:
Choosing the right competitive strategy helps a firm to compete with it rivals and become a leader in the market. Two different generic types of competitive strategies consisting of low-cost provider and differentiation have been wildly accepted by firms in every industry, but they are mutually exclusive and are not implemented at the same time. Nevertheless, contemporary studies agree that those two strategies can be combined, and firm should implement mutual strategies. Therefore, this research aims to examine the compatibility of a low-cost provider strategy and a differentiation strategy, and their impacts on organizational performance, considering various environmental factors. Methodologically, a quantitative approach was deployed using multiple regressions to analyze the responses from 42 CEOs in Thai public limited companies in eight different industries, which were classified in SET 100 index. The findings showed that combined strategies produced more significant impacts on the companies’ performance than a single strategy. Thus, firms may combine both low cost and differentiation strategies and implement them simultaneously. In addition, control variables (rapid change and uncertainty) and strategy variables appear to have significant impacts on companies’ performance. Therefore, firms should not ignore them to prevent negative consequences.
Wybranie odpowiedniej strategii konkurencyjnej pomaga firmie konkurować z rywalami i stać się liderem na rynku. Dwa różne rodzaje strategii konkurencyjnych składających się z taniego dostawcy i zróżnicowania zostały szeroko zaakceptowane przez firmy w każdej branży, ale wzajemnie się wykluczają i nie są wdrażane w tym samym czasie. Niemniej współczesne badania są zgodne, że te dwie strategie można łączyć, a firma powinna wdrażać strategie wzajemne. Dlatego niniejsze badanie ma na celu zbadanie zgodności strategii tanich dostawców ze strategią zróżnicowania oraz ich wpływu na wydajność organizacji, biorąc pod uwagę różne czynniki środowiskowe. Metodologicznie zastosowano podejście ilościowe przy użyciu regresji wielokrotnych do analizy odpowiedzi 42 dyrektorów generalnych tajlandzkich spółek akcyjnych w ośmiu różnych branżach, które zostały sklasyfikowane w indeksie SET 100. Wyniki pokazały, że połączone strategie wywarły większy wpływ na wyniki firm niż pojedyncza strategia. W ten sposób firmy mogą łączyć zarówno strategie niskokosztowe, jak i strategie różnicowania i wdrażać je jednocześnie. Ponadto zmienne kontrolne (szybka zmiana i niepewność) oraz zmienne strategiczne wydają się mieć znaczący wpływ na wyniki firm. Dlatego firmy nie powinny ich ignorować, aby zapobiec negatywnym konsekwencjom.

This paper is a  literature review to compare selected dimensions of manufacturing, services and R&D sectors supply chains. Each supply chain is seen as a  system which proper input should be proceed to gain appropriate output. Therefore, to study the supply chains, inputs, outputs and the processors specifications should be considered and the most common characteristics of each sectors’ input and output are investigated; additionally, due to wide range of supply chain specifications the factors are brought from the literature to the model to have a  unique structure of comparison: quality, cost, flexibility, competitiveness, resource utilization and innovation. The final result is a  comparison of the factors in manufacturing, service and R&D sourcing.Purpose – This paper is a  literature review. Due to novelty of R&D sourcing in compare with tangible manufacturing sourcing and intangible service sourcing, and lots of models and procedures from manufacturing sourcing were modified in services sourcing, we tried to compare manufacturing and services sourcing bold aspects with R&D souring to find out the possibilities of such modifications. Additionally, exploring on the similarities and differences could lighten up sourcing strategy selection processes.Design/methodology/approach – Supply chain management is initiated in manufacturing companies, and then various methods, procedures and strategies are modified, developed, and applied at service sector organizations. Therefore, R&D supply chains can be understood by comparing various factors of manufacturing (tangible) and service (intangible) supply chains to find opportunities for modification or innovation in R&D supply chains. The supply chain is a  system in which the input should pass out the processor to be converted into the appropriate output. Thus, in this study, inputs, outputs, and processors of supply chains are studied. Using the variation and range of supply chains factors as processor criteria, the most important characteristics of supply chains are studied: quality, cost, flexibility, competitiveness, resource utilization, and innovation.Findings – The result of the study is a  general comparison of R&D, manufacturing, and service supply chains in terms of these criteria: quality, cost, flexibility, competitiveness, resource utilization, and innovation that gives a  synergetic view pointsOriginality/Value – Modifying and developing sourcing strategies and procedures in manufacturing and service sourcing are possible approaches. The possibilities and opportunities in R&D sourcing were evaluated. Subsequently, there are not any other researches which compare R&D sourcing with manufacturing and services.

In view of the drawbacks in existing allocation methods which are incomplete considerations and poor practicality, a comprehensive fuzzy allocation method considering failure effects and reliability costs is proposed. Fuzzy linguistics and triangular fuzzy numbers are used to evaluate the uncertainty and subjective factors in allocation process. The traditional risk priority numbers (RPNs) are modified to overcome the shortages which are the same factor weights and equal difference of failure effects in original methods. State of the arts, components intricacy and working conditions are used to construct the reliability costs model, which solves the difficulties of costs statistics and avoids the sophisticated calculations which exist in current allocation methods. The relationship between reliability costs and potential risk of subsystem is studied and the value range of it is given in this paper. A case example is given to illustrative the scientificity and practicability of proposed allocation method.
Ze względu na niedostatki istniejących metod alokacji, które nie dają pełnego obrazu problematyki i mają słabe zastosowanie w praktyce, w artykule zaproponowano kompleksową metodę alokacji opartą na logice rozmytej, uwzględniającą skutki uszkodzeń i koszty niezawodności. W pracy wykorzystano lingwistykę rozmytą i trójkątne liczby rozmyte do oceny niepewności i czynników subiektywnych w procesie alokacji. Zmodyfikowano tradycyjny wskaźnik liczby priorytetowej ryzyka (RPN), co pozwoliło na poprawę mankamentów charakteryzujących oryginalną metodę, t.j. takie same współczynniki wagowe i równoważność skutków uszkodzeń o różnym stopniu ciężkości. Na podstawie wiedzy o stanie techniki, złożoności komponentów i warunkach pracy, skonstruowano model kosztów niezawodności, który rozwiązuje trudności dotyczące sporządzania statystyki kosztów i pozwala uniknąć skomplikowanych obliczeń stosowanych w obecnych metodach alokacji. Zbadano związek między kosztami niezawodności a potencjalnym ryzykiem podsystemu, oraz podano jego zakres wartości. Prezentowane studium przypadku demonstruje możliwe zastosowania i efektywność proponowanej metody.

Pollutant removal by the mechanism of constructed wetland has led to low cost, highly efficient wastewater treatment technology. Constructed wetlands (CWs) are artificial engineered systems that mimic like natural wetlands. CW’s have been used in previous research to treat a broad range of waste streams at large-scale for low-cost application in wastewater management. Generally, the most literature has targeted a particular class of mechanism or the other due to lack of generalized techniques for wastewater management using CWs. This work focuses on to introductory information and review on concept of CWs based on the latest mechanisms for the wastewater treatment to inspire economical and sustainable solutions to water based environmental problems. This research emphasis CW mechanism, construction, design, and applications of CWs as well as optimization of CWs for the treatment of wastewater. This review also highlights the study with different treatment stages of CWs for removing pollutants from different types of wastewaters.

Maintenance is fundamental to ensure the safety, reliability and availability of engineering systems, and predictive maintenance is the leading one in maintenance technology. This paper aims to develop a novel data-driven predictive maintenance strategy that can make appropriate maintenance decisions for repairable complex engineering systems. The proposed strategy includes degradation feature selection and degradation prognostic modeling modules to achieve accurate failure prognostics. For maintenance decision-making, the perfect time for taking maintenance activities is determined by evaluating the maintenance cost online that has taken into account of the failure prognostic results of performance degradation. The feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed strategy is confirmed using the NASA data set of aero-engines. Results show that the proposed strategy outperforms the two benchmark maintenance strategies: classical periodic maintenance and emerging dynamic predictive maintenance.

The article presents a method for assessing emissions of harmful substances and noise from road and air transport, as well as a combined assessment of the emissions of these transport pollutants. The original analytical dependencies reflecting the emissions of harmful substances from road transport, developed as part of the EMITRANSYS project implemented at the Faculty of Transport of the Warsaw University of Technology, were taken into consideration, in which the unit values of the actual road emissions of harmful substances are a function of, among other things, route length or speed of the vehicles. However, the dependencies associated with noise emissions were taken from the applicable international guidelines for assessing environmental pollution by traffic noise. The article also describes a case study in which the impact of Warsaw Chopin Airport on noise along the Warsaw road network and the entire Warsaw agglomeration was assessed. Analyses and discussions were carried out in the scope of the change in transport noise due to air operations carried out in the analysed area. As agreed, the combined impact of road and aircraft noise in the area under study is far more unfavourable than street noise alone. Thus, it can be seen that the assessment of noise levels carried out separately for individual modes of transport (in accordance with applicable regulations) should be supplemented with the assessment of traffic noise from all modes of transport – especially in the case of simulation tests of ecologically friendly changes in the area of transport.

A project scheduling problem investigates a set of activities that have to be scheduled due to precedence priority and resource constraints in order to optimize project-related objective functions. This paper focuses on the multi-mode project scheduling problem concerning resource constraints (MRCPSP). Resource allocation and leveling, renewable and non-renewable resources, and time-cost trade-off are some essential characteristics which are considered in the proposed multi-objective scheduling problem. In this paper, a novel hybrid algorithm is proposed based on non-dominated sorting ant colony optimization and genetic algorithm (NSACO-GA). It uses the genetic algorithm as a local search strategy in order to improve the efficiency of the ant colony algorithm. The test problems are generated based on the project scheduling problem library (PSPLIB) to compare the efficiency of the proposed algorithm with the non-dominated sorting genetic algorithm (NSGA-II). The numerical result verifies the efficiency of the proposed hybrid algorithm in comparison to the NSGA-II algorithm.

Aim/purpose – The aim of this paper is to provide economically justified evidence that the business value calculated by income valuation methods is the same, regardless of the type of cash flow used in the valuation algorithm. Design/methodology/approach – The evidence was arrived at using free cash flow to equity (FCFE), debt (FCFD) and firm (FCFF). The article draws attention to the FCFF method’s particular popularity in income valuation, based on analysts’ practice. It shows an overview of various approaches to determine the capital structure in the formula for WACC, both in practice and theory. Finally, it examines an empirical example with the authors’ own derivations and postulates. Findings – The conclusion drawn from the conducted analysis is that the key to the reconciliation process, and thus DCF model coherency, is to apply the appropriate method of capital structure estimation during the calculation of the weighted average cost of capital (WACC). This capital structure will henceforth be referred to as ‘income weights’. Research implications/limitations – It should be noted that the obtained compliance of valuation results does not imply that the income valuation becomes an objective way of determining business value. It still remains subjective. Originality/value/contribution – According to the presented approach, the DCF model’s subjectivism is limited to the forecasts. The rest is the algorithm which, based on the principles of mathematics, should be used in the same way in every situation.

Cases of heavy traffic congestion (commonly referred to as traffic jams) have negative influences on the economy, public health, and social life. This makes it important to assist drivers in these situations with Internet of Things (IoT) systems. The aim of this article is to present a low-cost device that supports driving in traffic jams. The system, which is based on data from a laser sensor with a range of up to 40 m, controls the distances to vehicles in front of and behind a moving car. Through audio and video signals, it warns the driver whether the vehicle in front of or behind the equipped vehicle is too close. This allows the driver to control the distance and avoid minor collisions.

The aim of the paper is to provide an insight on the topic of the economic implications of fire safety measures, i.e. the economic efficiency of fire protection. The presented work combines two elements – probabilistic fire modelling and a cost-benefit analysis. A worked example demonstrates the proposed methodology on three different occupancies – office, retail and industrial, and two levels of fire protection – sprinklered and unspriklered. In the first step, the likely, or expected, outcome – fire damaged area – is established using the event tree analysis. Afterwards, fire loss is calculated and cost benefit analysis performed. Since there are a number of possible fire scenarios with varying extent of fire damage and degree of occurrence probability, two alternative approaches of fire loss are evaluated; fire loss based on the most likely outcome and fire loss based on all potential outcomes weighed by their occurrence probability. The latter approach appears to be more robust and realistic. In the final step, the expected yearly fire loss and costs of fire protection are compared for the two scenarios. The presented results confirm the financial substantiation for sprinkler installation in the industrial and retail occupancy types. Nonetheless this study is aimed only at the economics of fire protection, i.e. property protection objectives and should be always used with a life safety analysis.
Celem pracy jest przedstawienie analizy skutków ekonomicznych stosowanych środków zabezpieczeń przeciwpożarowych, czyli efektywności ekonomicznej ochrony przeciwpożarowej. Przedstawiona praca łączy w sobie dwa elementy – probabilistyczne modelowania pożaru oraz analizę kosztów i korzyści. Opracowany przykład przedstawia zastosowanie proponowanej metody dla trzech różnych typów obiektów – biurowych, handlowych i przemysłowych oraz dwa poziomy ochrony przeciwpożarowej – z instalacją tryskaczową i bez niej. W pierwszym etapie, prawdopodobny lub oczekiwany wynikiem – obszar zniszczeń pożarowych - jest określany przy użyciu analizy drzewa zdarzeń. Następnie obliczane są straty pożarowe i przeprowadzona jest analiza kosztów i korzyści. Ponieważ istnieje szereg możliwych scenariuszy pożarowych o różnym zakresie strat pożarowych i prawdopodobieństwie wystąpienia, przeprowadzane są dwa alternatywne sposoby oceny strat pożarowych; straty pożaru w oparciu o wynik najbardziej prawdopodobny i straty na podstawie wszystkich możliwych wyników ważonych prawdopodobieństwem ich wystąpienia. To drugie rozwiązanie wydaje się być bardziej prawidłowe i realistyczne. W końcowym etapie, oczekiwane roczne straty pożarowe i koszty ochrony przeciwpożarowej są porównywane dla dwóch scenariuszy. Przedstawione wyniki potwierdzają uzasadnienie finansowe dla instalacji tryskaczowej w obiektach przemysłowych i handlowych. Należy podkreślić, że badanie to ma na celu jedynie ocenę ekonomiki ochrony przeciwpożarowej, czyli osiągnięcie celów ochrony mienia i powinno być ono zawsze stosowane łącznie z analizą bezpieczeństwa ludzi.

A rail system may be considered a useful tool for reducing vehicular flows on a road system (i.e. cars and trucks), especially in high-density contexts such as urban and metropolitan areas where greenhouse gas emissions need to be abated. In particular, since travellers maximise their own utility, variations in mobility choices can be induced only by significantly improving the level-of-service of public transport. Our specific proposal is to identify the economic and environmental effects of implementing an innovative signalling system (which would reduce passenger waiting times) by performing a cost-benefit analysis based on a feasibility threshold approach. Hence, it is necessary to calculate long-term benefits and compare them with intervention costs. In this context, a key factor to be considered is travel demand estimation in current and future conditions. This approach was tested on a regional rail line in southern Italy to show the feasibility and utility of the proposed methodology.

This paper proposed a new voltage-boosting 13-level switched-capacitor (SC) cost-effective inverter. The proposed topology comprises fourteen transistors, three capacitors and a single DC source to produce a 13-level staircase waveform. The capacitor voltage balancing problem is inherently solved by the series/parallel technique. Structural description, working principle, calculation of optimum values of capacitance and modulation scheme are briefly described. The comparative analyses with the existing SC multilevel inverter (MLI) in terms of voltage gain, blocking voltage, total standing voltage (TSV), component per level factor and cost function illustrate the merits of the proposed topology. Further, simulation and experimental results at different loading conditions verify the feasibility of the proposed topology.

Opis:
Large Projects in Aerospace Business (LPAB) notoriously face significant delays and cost overruns. The starting point is: reduction of risk for both deviations between planned and actual cost and time would increase profitability of a project. That means, if project duration and volume could be predicted more precisely, the risk for delays and cost overruns would be reduced while profitability would be improved through allocating resources when and where they are actually needed. This questions the efficiency of presently applied planning methods to yield proper estimates for project volume and duration. The initial approach to this problem started off with learning curves and developed into parametric estimate models mainly for cost. Over decades it was a main attempt to make the models robust for technical progress and to increase flexibility with regard to different kind of aircraft but there were still significant deficiencies. This article introduces a new approach to overcome above deficiencies and the corresponding parametric estimate models to determine project volume and duration for future aircraft projects. The model uses the degree of new technologies applied (technical complexity) and the number of countries, suppliers and final assemblies (organizational complexity) as independent variables. The parameters of the regression analysis were determined by analysing 5 large aircraft projects (Boeing 787, Airbus A380, A350, A400M, Lockheed Martin F-35B and Eurofighter). As a result, the model meets the requirements of application in practice while its accuracy is still within the range of legacy models.

This study investigates an inventory model for deteriorating products with a price and stock-dependent demand pattern where the holding cost is a non-linear function of both time and stock level. Moreover, a decreased price and a higher stock level lead to a higher rate of demand. Consequently, in this article, we present a new approach, aiming at maximization of the return on investment by maximizing the profit/cost ratio. If an inventory manager has the potential to invest in a variety of projects, but disposes of only limited resources, it is logical to strategically plan towards a better return on investment. As a result, the manager’s objective will be to develop an inventory policy with a possibly high return on investment. Therefore, a new strategy is considered in this article to optimize the profitability ratio in terms of replenishment time and selling price, which is determined as the proportion between the profit and the overall cost of the inventory scheme. This research demonstrates that optimizing the profitability ratio is equivalent to decreasing the average inventory cost of a product per unit. Also, the optimality is graphically checked and one numerical illustration is discussed to explain the result of the proposed model. Finally, sensitivity analysis of key parameters is performed to show the applicability of the proposed model. The profit/cost ratio is more sensitive to price elasticity markup or purchasing cost compared to the other parameters used. Also, for decision-makers, several helpful management insights are derived.
