Opis:
Girders with corrugated steel web are preferred and widely used in recently constructed bridges and industrial buildings. Sandwich core girders with corrugated web are constructed by adding two plates (skins) to the corrugated web. This study aims to investigate the shear span-to-depth ratio impact on the performance of sandwich core steel girders with corrugated web. Three span-to-depth ratios (a/d): 1.0, 1.833 and 2.5, were examined. The test includes three girders with sandwich web thickness of 30 mm, three girders with 60 mm sandwich web thickness, and three girders with conventional flat webs. A total of nine simply supported steel girders subjected to a concentrated load were fabricated and tested up to failure. The responses of the examined girders are presented in term of the load deflection curves, the ultimate load, and the maximum displacement. Among the conclusions drawn in this study that girders with sandwich core thickness of 30 mm demonstrate higher ultimate load capacity than girders with sandwich core of 60 mm, the maximum difference in the ultimate load capacity was about 20% and can be seen at a/d equals to 1.0. The results also pointed out that the behavior of the beams was noticeably impacted by the shear span-to-depth ratio.

Opis:
Based on the experimental test results of the authors, this investigation is concerned with the finite element analysis to examine and compare the load values and failure modes of the authors’ results. This research was conducted using the Abaqus software. The experimental work included the fabrication of twelve plate girders with honeycomb and flat web plate corrugation patterns, which were then tested under a single concentrated load at the midspan. According to the corrugation dimension or outer honeycomb web thickness, the honeycomb steel plate web girder is divided into three groups (60 mm, 80 mm and 100 mm). The specimens also involved plate girders with a flat web. The specimens were created with three lengths (600 mm, 1,200 mm and 1,800 mm). The Abaqus software was used in finite element models to simulate the concentrated load. The numerical results demonstrated that the 60 mm thick honeycomb web provides a greater load-bearing capacity and shear strength than other girders. The 20 mm honeycomb corrugation on the steel plate girder indicates the increased and improved shear resistance. The conclusion was that as the width of the corrugation increased, so did the steel web’s ultimate load and shear strength, resulting in a positive relationship between the critical shear buckling load of the web and the moment of inertia at the strong axis. When the dimension of the corrugation increases, the moment of inertia of the Y axis (Iy) decreases; thus, the plate girder will fail with a less critical buckling load (Pcr). Also, it can be concluded that as the steel plate thickness of the honeycomb web increases, the shear resistance increases as well. However, the spacing between the intermediate stiffener or the horizontal spacing of the web panel can enhance the shear resistance of honeycomb web girder if it was decreased due to increasing the action of tension field force that resists the diagonal tension developed at the web panel by the applied midspan concentrated force.

Opis:
The main aim of this work is a computational nonlinear analysis of a high strength steel corrugated-web plate girder with a very detailed and realistic mesh including vertical ribs, all the fillet welds and supporting areas. The analysis is carried out to verify mechanical structural response under transient fire temperature conditions accounting for an efficiency and accuracy of three various transient coupled thermo-elastic models. All the resulting stress distributions, deformation modes and their time variations, critical loads and eigenfrequencies as well as failure times are compared in all these models. Nonlinearities include material, geometrical and contact phenomena up to the temperature fluctuations together with temperature-dependent constitutive relations for high strength steel. They result partially from steady state and transient experimental tests or from the additional designing rules included in Eurocodes. A fire scenario includes an application of the normative fire gas temperature curve on the bottom flange of the entire girder for a period of 180 minutes. It is computed using sequentially coupled thermo-elastic Finite Element Method analyses. These account for heat conductivity, radiation and convection. The FEM model consists of a combination of 3D hexahedral and tetrahedral solid finite elements and uses temperature-dependent material and physical parameters, whose values are taken after the experiments presented in Eurocodes. Numerical results presented here demonstrate a fundamental role of the lower flange in carrying fire loads according to this scenario and show a contribution of the ribs and of the welds to the strength of the entire structure.

Opis:
More accurate design algorithm helpful in bending resistance evaluation of steel beams with corrugated web exposed to fully developed fire is presented and discussed in detail. The condition of fire resistance limit state is proposed to be determined by the interactive formula based on the consideration of biaxial bending in which the transverse out-of-plane bending phenomenon is the spatial effect of in-plane shear. Such an influence, usually neglected in formal models dealing with the persistent design situation, can become more significant under fire conditions, when the steel yield point decreases as a consequence of the flanges temperature growth. Dependence between the material temperature and the global instability factors is considered in the methodology proposed by the authors, especially with relation to the assessment of the adequate values of lateral – torsional buckling coefficient as well as of flexural transverse buckling coefficient specified for the compressed flange. The conclusive safety condition should be supplemented by the additional interactive component in which the influence of the axial compression force is expressed, in the case when such internal force is induced in a considered beam as a result of thermal strains constrainment.

Opis:
The beams of thin corrugated web afford a significant weight reduction compared with hot-rolled or welded ones. In the initial solutions, the flanges are made of flat plates, welded to the sinusoidal web sheet, requiring a specific welding technology. A new solution is proposed by the authors, in which the beam is composed by a web of trapezoidal cold-formed steel sheet and flanges of back-to-back lipped channel sections. For connecting flanges to the web self-drilling screws are used. The paper summarizes the experimental and numerical investigations carried out at the CEMSIG Research Centre (www.ct.upt.ro/centre/cemsig/) of the Politehnica University of Timisoara and, at the end, presents the influence of corrugation depth of web on the lateral stability of the beams.
