Opis:
Steel structures for a conveyance guiding system are subjected to prolonged, intense corrosion during their operation leading to a considerable loss of material and structure capacity reduction. Shaft guides are made of closed profiles welded from hotrolled channel sections. These profiles are categorized as class 1 cross-sections according to Eurocode 3, which means that they are resistant to local instability upon bending [1]. With an increase in the corrosion loss of the guides, the inertia moment of the crosssection is reduced. The resistance of profiles to local buckling is also reduced. However, calculations for local stability in guides upon bending are not required by the local Polish regulations on the operation of conveyance in shafts [2]. The question is whether this constitutes a shortcoming and risk for safe operation. Calculations according to steel construction standards [1] supported by numerical simulation were used to evaluate shaft steelwork guides resistance to buckling and their sensitivity to corrosion loss. It was shown that the guides of corrosion loss of 52-63%, depending on profile size, are prone to local buckling.

Zamieszczono w artykule trzy przykłady korozji rurek stalowych małych średnic w roztworach kwasu siarkowego; pokazano wpływ zmienności dwóch parametrów jakimi były: średnica rury i stopień stężenia kwasu. Wyników tych nie można uogólniać jednak trzeba mieć na uwadze pokazaną tendencję zmienności.
The corrosion of elements of the construction it is with difficulty exactly to estimate. Very important is the definition of the speed of the growth of corrosive losses in time. In the article the author presented sources of errors appearing at the evaluation of results of the corrosion. Particularly one discussed different functions of the progress of the corrosion and one illustrated it on examples. Was given also 3 examples of corrosive research carried out in the laboratory, in solution 5% and 20% the vitriolic acid, tubular samples carbon steel and stainless steel. Results of these research one cannot generalize, however it is necessary to bear in mind shown tendency

Opis:
This study investigated the characterization of Ficus exasperata extract and the optimization of the process variables on inhibition of mild steel in seawater environment. Box Behnken Design was employed to examine the influence of three process variables: Temperature: 25-29 °C; Time: 3 – 6 days; Inhibitor concentration: 1-5 v/v. Phytochemical screening of the extract was done. The physicochemical constituents of the seawater were also determined. The experimental data was statistically determined and Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) was used to characterize the mild steel. The result of the phytochemical screening of the Ficus exasperata plant extract (FEPE) showed the presence of contain inhibitive constituents: alkaloids, tannins, saponins, flavonoids and glycosides. The highest inhibition efficiency of 86.31% at a temperature of 29 ℃ for 6days at an inhibition concentration of 3v/v was observed from the experimental run. The optimal process levels of time: 5.74 days, temperature: 27.95 ℃ and inhibitor concentration: 2.90v/v, gave 87.52% as its inhibition efficiency. The result of the SEM from the optimal process level validated showed that more passive film was formed which can be attributed to the adsorption of the Ficus exasperata extract. It can be concluded that the Ficus exasperata was a good eco-friendly inhibitor.

Opis:
Petroleum oils are the limited earth resources in which the variety of their chemical compositions are mostly composed of hydrocarbons and some trace compounds. Oils also contain various corrosive compounds. In the existing research, the major objective was the investigations of the impacts of such corrosive compounds within two different types of petroleum oils on the corrosion rates of seven different types of ferrous metals. As the methodology, the major corrosive properties of two different types of crude oils and chemical compositions of seven different types of metal were measured by standard instruments and methods. The corrosion rates of prepared metal coupons from seven different types of metals were determined by the relative weight loss method after immersion time periods separately in both crude oils in order of 15, 30 and 45 days, while qualitatively analyzing the corroded metal surfaces by optical microscope. In addition, the decayed ferrous and copper concentrations from metals into crude oils after immersion were measured by atomic absorption spectroscopy, while the status of the initial hardness of metal coupons were measured by the Vicker’s hardness tester. According to the obtained results, we saw higher corrosive stability from stainless steels which have chemical compositions of at least 12% of chromium with sufficient amounts of nickel, while in other steels, we noted relatively higher progress of the corrosion process regarding salts at lower temperatures, formations of FeS, Fe2O3, corrosion cracks and pits on the corrosion metal surfaces, significant decays of ferrous and copper from some metals into crude oils and slight reductions of the initial hardness of most metal types due to the corrosion.

Opis:
The long-term utilisation of the ceramic bricks in different conditions, particularly in the presence of moisture, induces the progressive changes, which over time can initiate a gradual loss of performance. This process is related to, inter alia, the collection in the texture of ceramic bricks the salts, derived from the external environment, which may crystallize in the pores of the material. Furthermore, they can form corrosion products in the reaction with the components of the shard. The presence of both enables the loss of performance of the material. Therefore, the studies were undertaken aimed at determining the ability of the various salts to accumulate in the shard of an ordinary ceramic bricks. The accumulation was evaluated on the basis of the gravimetric measurements and measurements of the velocity of ultrasonic waves.

W artykule przedstawiono zagadnienie trwałości kominów stalowych, które spośród różnego rodzaju konstrukcji stalowych należą do obiektów o stosunkowo krótkim okresie użytkowania.
In the paper the problem of the durability of steel chimneys is presented. Among other steel structures, steel chimneys are characterized by a relatively short time of exploitation. It is important to know both the main forms ot the loss of capacity and the decisive factors which considerably reduce the time of safe functionality ot chimneys. Moreover the durability ot these structures depends on the structural type of the chimney as well as on the dynamic parameters.

Opis:
Subsea transmission pipelines (STP) are designed to transport liquids, gases or solid/liquid mixtures over some distances. STP are buried underground or submerged in water for transportation of natural oil and gas (O&G) products. A Vernonia amygdalina (VA) solution is prepared to act as an inhibitor. The specimens are kept in a workable state. Steps are taken to prepare each specimen. All cuts and sheared edges were ground out to prevent them from becoming sites for preferential attack. The finishing of the specimen surface with grit abrasive paper (sand paper) and rinsing of the specimens in distilled water are carried out. Then, degreasing of specimen in acetone and air-dried are carried out. Upon drying, the specimens are immediately weighed to obtain their initial weights. Twelve specimens are used for the test as follows: 6 Aluminum (Al); and 6 mild steel (MS) samples. With a 2M concentration of VA solution, the MS and Al samples are immersed in different plastic containers containing 400ml of seawater with pH value of 7.25 with no (0%) inhibitor added to it. A 5% (400ml) of the VA solution is poured into the measuring cylinder for each sample-Al and MS. The specimens are suspended by the strings and completely immersed in the different percentage test media. The same procedure is carried out for each of the different percentages (i.e. 10%, 15%, 20%, and 25%) and a total of 12 solutions are set up. The seawater used has 7.25 pH. At the end of every week (168 hours), the specimens are removed from the corrosive media. Observation and recording of appearance of the specimen, noting sites are done to analyze the effect of the VA solution on the AL and MS used for the STP. Values are obtained and graphs plotted on weight loss (WL) and corrosion rate (CR) versus the time. It is observed that the VA solution has different effect on the STP at different time and percentage of the VA solution introduced into the environment of the pipe. It was also observed that optimum inhibition of coupons is obtained between 15-25% of VA solution during the first four weeks of testing. At the fifth week, the inhibitor was gradually losing its effectiveness. This means that more inhibitor needs to be added at regular intervals in order to sustain the effectiveness of the inhibitor.

Opis:
Mild Steel and their products are main raw material for a strong infrastructure for every country which is the main demand in the race of survival, stabilization, growth and competition. Industrialization and modernization in now a days has made a strong demand of steel and their maintenance but atmospheric corrosion can aggressively accelerate the degradation of steel during their manufacturing, processing, storage and transportation. In these cases, traditional methods to prevent corrosion are not suitable which provide the scope of Vapour Phase Corrosion Inhibitors (VPCI) in industries, defense and daily life. Three new VPCI namely Diallylamine (DAA), 1-Benzylimidazole (1-BIZ) and 5-Aminotetrazole (5-ATZ) were tested for mild steel in different aggressive atmospheric conditions by Weight Loss Test, Eschke Test, Salt Spray Test, Sulphur dioxide (SO2) Test at 50 °C and results of these tests were supported by Metallurgical Research Microscopy and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM).

Opis:
This paper aims to investigate the corrosion behavior of zirconium carbide (ZrC) reinforced Al – Si metal matrix composites (MMCs) in a mixture of acidic solution using weight loss method. The composites are prepared by powder metallurgy method. Al-12Si-xZrC composites containing 0, 5, and 10 weight percentage of ZrC particles are compacted in a die set assembly and sintered in an inert gas muffle furnace. The acidic solutions used for corrosion are 1 N HCl, 1 N H2SO4 and 1 N HNO3. The corrosion characteristics of Al-12Si-xZrC composites and the pure Al were experimentally evaluated. The corrosion test was carried out at different weight proportions of the samples in various concentrations of the acid such as 1 N HCl, 1 N H2SO4 and 1 N HNO3 for different exposure time (i.e., 24 h, 72 h, 144 h and 216 h), respectively. The results specified that corrosion rate of composites was lower than that of base metal Al under the corrosive atmosphere, regardless of exposure time and acidic solutions used as corrodents. Al-12Si-xZrC composites become more corrosion resistant as the ZrC content is increased. This is because of the development of stable oxide layer above the specimens. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) confirms the degree of attack of acidic solution on the surface of the examined material.
