Opis:
Correlation coefficient is a well known measure of (linear) dependence between random variables. In his textbook published in 1980 L.T. Kubik introduced an analogue of such measure for random events A and B and studied its basic properties. We reveal that this measure reduces to the usual correlation coefficient between the indicator functions of A and B. In consequence the resuts by Kubik are obtained and strenghted directly. This is essential because the textbook is recommended by many universities in Poland.

Opis:
In the area of image analysis of templates, we have proposed and implemented a method for locating landmarks in 2D-images of faces. It uses the weighted correlation coefficient as a similarity measure between the template and the image. The weights are selected in the optimal way to improve the discrimination of parts of the image which correspond to the template from those which do not. The method does not use specific properties of faces.
Zaproponowaliśmy i zastosowaliśmy metodę lokalizacji punktów orientacyjnych obrazów dwuwymiarowych.

Opis:
The purpose of the paper is to present a retrospective analysis of taxation in thecontext of public debt in the years 1995–2013. The author attempts to verify thehypothesis according to which there is correlation of various degrees of significanceand various directions between taxes and the debt of the general government sectorof the EU Member States. The study of those correlations was preceded by ananalysis that indicated tendencies to diminish tax burdens which was a result of„copying” tax policy and simultaneously increase sources and change character ofthe causes of increasing public debt. Out of 25 states where the correlation betweentwo major groups of taxes in GDP and public debt was proved, in 15 states thedimension of the interdependence was positive, while in the remaining 10 – negative. In the first group the lower (higher) tax burdens were, the lower (higher) thepublic debt was. Therefore it might be inferred that the tax rate below or abovewhich the budget income moves was not exceeded. As far as the remaining 10countries are concerned (those with negative correlation), it might be suggestedthat the critical point of decreasing (increasing) taxes below (above) which theincome drops was exceeded. Both the descriptive analysis of the indices and statisticalexamination make it possible to verify the adopted hypothesis positively, indicating simultaneously the necessity for further examination.

Opis:
The paper analyzes the influence of labor productivity on employment in various branches of Poland’s manufacturing sector in 1993-2007. The author attempts to determine if changes in labor productivity and employment were substitutive or complementary in nature and whether the relationship between these processes was stable or liable to change. The analysis, using the Pearsoncorrelation coefficient (which measures the strength of the linear relationship between two variables), shows that the relationship between labor productivity and employment turned from substitutive to complementary and that an improvement in labor productivity had no distinct impact on employment in the short term, while in the long term it promoted an increase in employment. The relationship between labor productivity and employment varied because the ways in which labor productivity improved tended to change. In the 1990s institutional changes led to an improvement in labor productivity, including the introduction of market economy mechanisms, privatization and greater competition in the wake of opening the economy. At the time the simplest method was used: employment reductions. With time this option petered out and companies began to improve labor productivity (and competitiveness) by investing, modernizing their fixed assets, and introducing product rather than process innovations. This had a favorable influence on employment, the author says.

Opis:
The vibration signals on marine blowers are non-linear and non-stationary. In addition, the equipment in marine engine room is numerous and affects each other, which makes it difficult to extract fault features of vibration signals in the time domain. This paper proposes a fault diagnosis method based on the combination of Ensemble Empirical Mode Decomposition (EEMD), an Autoregressive model (AR model) and the correlation coefficient method. Firstly, a series of Intrinsic Mode Function (IMF) components were obtained after the vibration signal was decomposed by EEMD. Secondly, effective IMF components were selected by the correlation coefficient method. AR models were established and the power spectrum was analysed. It was verified that blower failure can be accurately diagnosed. In addition, an intelligent diagnosis method was proposed based on the combination of EEMD energy and a Back Propagation Neural Network (BPNN), with a correlation coefficient method to get effective IMF components, and the energy components were calculated, normalised as a feature vector. Finally, the feature vector was sent to the BPNN for training and state recognition. The results indicated that the EEMD-BPNN intelligent fault diagnosis method is suitable for higly accurate fault diagnosis of marine blowers.

We present a highly efficient filter structure to create power-complementary filter pairs for phantom source widening. It either introduces frequency-dependent phase or amplitude differences in a pair of loudspeaker signals. We evaluate how the perceptual effect is influenced by off-center listening positions in a standard ±30o loudspeaker setup. The evaluation of the phantom source widening effect is based on measurements of the inter-aural cross-correlation coefficient (IACC), which is justified by its pronounced correlation to the perceived phantom source width in prior listening test results.

Opis:
Soil moisture datasets at various scales are needed for sustainable land use and water management. The aim of this study was to compare soil moisture ocean salinity satellite and in situ soil moisture data for the Podlasie and Polesie regions in Eastern Poland. Both regions have similar climatic and topo- graphic conditions but are different in land use, vegetation, and soil cover. The test sites were located on agricultural fields on sandy soils and natural vegetation on marshy soils that prevail in the Podlasie and Polesie regions, respectively. The soil moisture ocean salinity soil moisture data were obtained from radiometric measurements (1.4 GHz) and the ground soil moisture from sensors at a depth of 5 cm during the years 2010-2011. In general, temporal patterns of soil moisture from both satellite and ground measurements followed the rainfall trend. The regression coeffi- cients, Bland-Altman analysis, concordance correlation coefficient, and total deviation index showed that the agreement between ground and soil moisture ocean salinity derived soil moisture data is better for the Podlasie than the Polesie region. The lower agre- ement in Polesie was attributed mostly to the presence of the widespread natural vegetation on the wetter marsh soil along with minor contribution of agriculturally used drier coarse-textured soils.

Opis:
Sweet chestnut forests in Bosnia and Herzegovina are underrepresented in the total forest fund, and their area is declining today. The research aims to determine the correlation relations of morphological traits of chestnut leaves, fruit and cupule in the population of Bosnian Krajina (northwestern Bosnia and Herzegovina) to undertake selection and breeding activities. Eleven traits of fruits, leaves and cupules were measured, seven assessed and six calculated. A mutual correlation for the researched traits was calculated using the Pearson correlation coefficient r. When the fruit traits and cupule traits were compared, the needle length showed a statistically significant correlation with most of the fruit traits. The traits of the number of fruits in the cupule and needle length had a statistically significant correlation coefficient with leaf blade width and leaf petiole length. The correlated traits can be distinguished as important for further selection and breeding of sweet chestnuts. The research results indicate that the genetic material of sweet chestnut is a rich source of genetic diversity and can be used in selection to obtain new varieties and cultivars in Bosnia and Herzegovina and for the protection of the indigenous gene pool.
