    There has been an increased interest in the field of informational and psychological warfare conducted by the Russian Federation directed at Western countries and their allies following the intensification of the conflict in Ukraine. The most visible example of this are the activities in the field of propaganda, disinformation and psychological operations accompanied the annexation of the Crimea and manipulate the American public during the presidential election in 2016. Trolling as one of using tools of such activity is a highly visible manifestation in which users or automatic comment generation programs manipulate online discussions. This phenomenon is visible and widely discussed in the media discourse. Efforts are being made to develop academically rigorous systems of identification and description. This paper presents the results and main conclusions reached through the application of the author’s method of analysing key words supported by corpus-based analysis in exploring this phenomenon.

    In der vorliegenden Arbeit wurden die Personenbezeichnungen der Wende in Deutschland analysiert. Im theoretischen Teil des Beitrags wurde der historische Hintergrund dieser Periode besprochen. Dar- über hinaus wurde hier der Begriff Wende sowie seine Herkunft und die Werte, die dieses Wort vermittelte, erklärt. Das Ziel des empirischen Teils ist herauszufinden, welche neuen Personenbezeichnungen während oder kurz vor diesem Zeitabschnitt entstanden sind und welchen semantischen Bereichen sie zugeordnet werden können, welchen Charakter sie aufweisen und ob diese Wörter im heutigen Sprachgebrauch weiterhin auftreten. Es wurde auch analysiert, ob es in bestimmten Wörtern zu irgendwelchen semantischen Änderungen kam. Zur Beantwortung der Forschungsfragen wurde die korpusbasierte Analyse durchgeführt, die bewies, dass die neuen Personenbezeichnungen der Wende sich auf den Herkunftsort, Vertreter des alten DDR-Systems, die Mentalität, die politische und soziale Rolle, bzw. politische Verhaltensweisen, auf das kulturelle Leben und die Ausreise beziehen. Aus der Analyse folgt, dass die meisten untersuchten Wörter negative Konnotationen haben und auch im heutigen Sprachgebrauch verwendet werden, wobei sich der größte Teil von ihnen auf die Wendezeit bezieht. Die Untersuchung zeigte überdies, dass manche Wörter während und nach der Wende ihre Bedeutung geändert haben.
    In this paper, the personal names which came into use during the period of change (Wende) in Germany were analyzed. In the theoretical part, the historical background of this period was discussed. In addition, the term Wende was explained here, as well as its origin and the values that this word conveyed. The aim of the empirical part was to determine which new personal terms emerged during or just before this period and to which semantic domains they can be assigned, what character they have and whether these words still appear in today’s usage. It was also analyzed whether any semantic changes occurred in certain words. In order to answer the research questions, a corpus-based analysis was carried out, which proved that the new personal names of the Wende refer to the place of origin, representatives of the old GDR system, mentality, political and social role, or political behaviour, cultural life and departure. It follows from the analysis that most of the studied words evoke negative connotations and are present in today’s usage, with the majority of them referring to the Wende period. Moreover, the study showed that some words changed their meaning during and after the Wende.

    Studies on metaphor in political speeches have gained prominence in recent years, especially in Western political contexts where it has been shown that politicians gain the trust, confidence, and ratification of their audience when they speak persuasively (Charteris-Black, 2011, 2014). However, not much research has focused on the use of metaphors by politicians in non-Western (developing) contexts where political language is shaped by many factors that may account for variations in the use of metaphor across cultures. This paper contributes to the rhetoric of metaphor in political discourse by examining the range of (conceptual) metaphors used in the speeches of an African politician – John Mahama of Ghana. Drawing on discourse and cognitive theories of metaphor, I explore Mahama’s use of metaphors in his political speeches, arguing that, as a political speaker, Mahama uses metaphor in a conscious, consistent, and conceptually structured manner that projects his ideological stance on issues of politics and governance. The study reveals that Mahama draws on many conventional metaphors but uses them in creative and unconventional ways to depict culturally relevant situations, and to convey his political ideologies to his audience. The findings in this study do not only contribute towards a better understanding of Mahama’s communicative style, but also foreground the persuasive potential of metaphor for audience engagement in political discourse.

    This paper aims to investigate the what-cleft construction with adjectives and establish its structural, semantic, and distributional features by adopting frame semantics and usage-based construction grammar, exploiting the data from the Corpus of Contemporary American English (COCA), and applying quantitative corpus-based methodology. To this end, the author extracts the occurrences of the What be ADJ be-construction from a large corpus of naturally-occurring data, determines its structural, semantic, distributional, and discourse-functional properties, and identifies adjectives that are strongly associated with the construction in question. The paper makes a significant contribution to a growing body of literature on the what-cleft construction by conducting a qualitative and quantitative analysis of one of its variants, a grammatical pattern with adjectives that has not been hitherto investigated in much detail.
    W niniejszym artykule autor stawia sobie za cel zbadanie konstrukcji what-cleft z przymiot-nikami i ustalenie jej cech strukturalnych, semantycznych i dystrybucyjnych poprzez za-stosowanie semantyki ramowej i gramatyki konstrukcji, wykorzystanie danych z korpusu (COCA) i użycie ilościowej metodologii korpusowej. W tym celu autor wydobywa wystąpie-nia konstrukcji z dużego korpusu naturalnie występujących danych, określa jej strukturalne, semantyczne, dystrybucyjne i dyskursowo-funkcjonalne właściwości oraz identyfikuje przy-miotniki, które są silnie związane z omawianą konstrukcją. Artykuł wnosi znaczący wkład do rosnącej literatury na temat konstrukcji what-cleft poprzez jakościową i ilościową analizę jednego z jej wariantów, konstrukcji z przymiotnikami, który nie był do tej pory szczegółowo badany.

    A central tenet of critical discourse analysis spells that language in discourse meant for mass consumption is often permeated with a reproduction and/or a resistance of certain ideologies, assumptions, and knowledge characteristic of different social groups making up the society. One of such best scenarios is news headlines narrating crisis- driven national discourse in Nigeria, where almost all national discourses are driven by certain inherent ideologies and political power. In this paper, we propose a discourse chain principle uncovering the underlying socio-psychological idiosyncrasies of the par- ticipants (inclusive of agents and recipients) and processes in most national discourses in Nigeria. Combining concepts in corpus methods with critical discourse analysis, the paper shows a basic approach to operationalising ideologies in notational form. Apply- ing corpus analytic method to 761 herdsmen news headlines extracted from Nigerian newspapers, the present paper nicely illustrates the extent to which these news headlines move the discourse-at-hand (i.e. herdsmen crisis) to discourse-around. Such movement is performed by reproducing institutionalised ideological patterns revolving around identity politics (ethnicity), religion, question of nationhood, corruption, citizenry distrust, and political power imbalance. The paper argues that this discursive movement is often driven by a chain of discourse that defines the existence of the nationhood.

    Le système d’accord du participe passé français s’appuie sur de nombreuses règles de nature syntaxico-sémantique et qui exigent des usagers des compétences avancées en analyse fonctionnelle ou grammaticale. Il contient une multitude d’exceptions, où l’accord est prescrit ou proscrit contre l’intuition linguistique de l’usager, sans compter les différents cas particuliers et autres exceptions remettant en question le fonctionnement de l’usage contemporain. Or, c’est dans le cadre de l’enseignement du français comme langue étrangère que nous avons voulu appréhender le comportement de locuteurs-scripteurs non natifs quant à l’accord du participe passé, et ce afin, précisément, de pouvoir construire par la suite des outils didactiques adaptés aux difficultés réellement rencontrées.
    The concord system of the French past participle is based on a series of rules, mainly semantico-‑syntactic, which means it requires the ability of functional analysis, and consequently also good grammatical skills and knowledge. The concord system features many exceptions, in which agreement is either obligatory or forbidden contrary to the speaker’s linguistic intuition – apart from extraordinary and ambivalent instances. Our goal was to assess student knowledge of concord rules for the past participle in French as a foreign language. We prepared a quiz consisting of 33 sentences that tests knowledge of particular rules. It allows to isolate rules that are particularly difficult to students, which in turn helps find appropriate didactic solutions.
    System uzgadniania participe passé opiera się na szeregu reguł, najczęściej semantyczno-‑składniowych, a co za tym idzie – wymaga zdolności analizy funkcjonalnej, pogłębionej wiedzy i umiejętności gramatycznych. Zawiera dużą liczbę wyjątków, uzgodnienie jest wymagane bądź zabronione, wbrew oczekiwaniom czy też intuicji językowej użytkownika, nie licząc przypadków szczególnych, w tym ambiwalentnych. W kontekście tego złożonego zagadnienia gramatycznego opracowaliśmy specjalny test, aby przeprowadzić analizę kompetencji polskich studentów z zakresu uzgadniania participe passé w języku francuskim jako obcym. Wyodrębnienie zasad sprawiających szczególną trudność studentom, zgodnych z istniejącymi normami językowymi, umożliwi poszukiwanie adekwatnych rozwiązań na poziomie dydaktycznym.

    The author presents her current research project dealing with the argumentation of written interactions that appeared in cyberspace. They focus on the activities of the artist, humorist, political activist Dieudonné M’Bala M’Bala in France and, in Poland, around the activities of the journalist, philo-semitic performer Rafal Betlejewski. The common point of these discourses is that they trigger argumentative mechanisms that are part of the anti-Semitic attitudes of the interacting subjects. It demonstrates how the methodologies of French-speaking linguists can be useful for the argumentative analysis of such a difficult textual corpus.
