Opis:
In this article we consider the phenomenon of answering a query with a query. Although such answers are common, no large-scale, corpusbased characterization exists, with the exception of clarification requests. After briefly reviewing different theoretical approaches on this subject, we present a corpus study of query responses in the British National Corpus and develop a taxonomy for query responses. We identify a variety of response categories that have not been formalized in previous dialogue work, particularly those relevant to adversarial interaction. We show that different response categories have significantly different rates of subsequent answer provision. We provide a formal analysis of the response categories within the framework of KoS.

This piece of research presents an analysis of the use of anglicisms in the Spanish press at the beginning of the 21st century. Specifi cally, it concentrates on their distribution in texts belonging to different thematic domains. Thus, the purpose of this study is to establish a ranking of specialised fi elds in terms of the frequency with which anglicisms are employed in them. In order to do so, the Corpus de Referencia del Español Actual (CREA), compiled by the Real Academia Española, is used as the source for texts, which supports the reliability and representativeness of the present work.

Variability in the use of the defi nite article in New Englishes, and in particular, Nigerian English has received the least attention from a quantitative, probabilistic and predictive perspective. The present study narrows this gap by not only assessing the extent to which article use in Nigerian English varies, but by also simultaneously testing out previous claims found in similar varieties, using similar corpus data from the Nigerian component of the International Corpus of English (ICE). Following theoretic framework for article use by Hawkins (1978) and Prince (1981), Wahid (2013) found that variability in defi nite article usage in New Englishes is more predictable on the basis of genre than on the basis of variety. Revising Wahid’s method and reconceptualising same theoretic frameworks of Hawkins and Prince, together with a comparable corpus sample of 8674 defi nite article the from ICE-Nigeria, the extent of article usage variability in the Nigerian variety is not only shown but also that variety outweighs genre and syntactic function predicting article usage in New Englishes.

Reduplication has always been an important subject of morphology and language typology. Cross-linguistic studies have identified 45 functions of reduplication in 108 languages. Total reduplication is recognised as productive and systematic in Colloquial Singapore English (CSE), possibly due to language contact. The paper aims to present the cases of verbal and nominal reduplication in CSE described in the linguistic literature, and juxtapose them with the examples from the Singapore component of the International Corpus of English (ICE-SIN), which seem to be indicative of discrepancies in form and functions.

The aim of this study is to analyse a non-uniform process of palatalization in the Mid- dle English Northern dialect, with the main focus on the range of operation of the pro- cess, its conditioning environment and the direction of the change in the four lemmas: EACH, MUCH, SUCH, and WHICH. The fact that palatalization was an active process in the North has been proved by 47% of the Northern texts from the Innsbruck Cor- pus of Middle English Prose, which have demonstrated cases of palatalization in the forms of the lemmas. Referring to the studies of a perceptually motivated sound change and observing certain correlations between the palatalization processes occurring now and in the past, one may infer that the scope of palatalization in the North might have been even wider.

This paper focuses on the question of calquing or loan translation. Basic tendencies in the field of borrowing are presented, one of which is to preserve loanwords while the other one to form calques. Various definitions of calquing are included along with the common distinction between semantic and structural calques understood in terms of polysemy and creation of new linguistic entities. Problems with borrowing and calquing are indicated on the basis of traditional classifi cations. The discussion leads to a newer classification which is derived from Carstensen and Busse (1994), i.e. one which leads to the distinction between calques and loan formations. Examples to indicate the accuracy of both categories are derived from computer terminology: both doublett es and various degree of translation. This part is based on a corpus study of text in Gazeta Wyborcza. Two tendencies are identified in this respect: creation of families of new terms and formation of new terms in accordance with the principles followed in earlier terminology. Concurrently, other factors, which lie beyond the realm of contrastive linguistics, are pointed as the reasons for the existing diversity in terminology. They are around the concept of sociolinguistic domains, in accordance with setting and participant framework. One of the reasons for not forming calques can be associated with the etymology of terms which inhibits this process.

Aim. The aim of this article is to investigate the patterns in the translation of sex-related vocabulary from English to Polish in search for any changes regarding the markedness, poetics, and linguistic variety. Methods. The study is conducted on the pairs of English erotic novels and their Polish translations. It involves both quantitative (corpus-based methods) and qualitative (Descriptive ranslation Studies) methods. Results. The results indicate significant change in the area of marked vocabulary. In English-Polish translation, a vast majority of the marked vocabulary related to sex is replaced with unmarked vocabulary, paraphrased, or simply deleted. The qualitative analysis also suggests certain changes in the poetics of text, introduced by the means of addition. These changes mostly result in sexual encounters becoming more romanticised in translation. Conclusions. While the observed trends in translation are unmistakeable, it cannot be concluded with certainty what have led to the changes of the source text. Since the analysed texts were all published around the same time, by different publishing houses, and were translated by different translators, we are leaning towards the hypothesis of self-censorship in translation.

The aim of this paper is to investigate the distribution of exponents of modality in the justifications of judgments passed by the Court of Justice of the European Union (CJEU) and judgments passed by the Supreme Court of the Republic of Poland (SN) in the post-accession period of 2011 to 2015. In particular, the paper aims to establish the degree of convergence between translated EU judgments and non-translated national judgments in terms of the employment of modality markers. The research material consists of a large corpus of Polish-language versions of 897 judgments passed by the Court of Justice (CJ), 384 judgments passed by the General Court (GC), a corpus of 2564 non-translated judgments delivered by the SN, and a reference corpus of contemporary Polish (NKJP). The quantitative data point to the high salience and divergent distribution of a number of various markers in both EU and national judgments, such as the value-laden modal verbs należy [(one) must/should] and trzeba [(one) should/must]. It is argued that the frequent use of markers of modality constitutes a generic feature, as it raises the perceived level of authoritativeness of judicial argumentation. The findings may contribute to raising awareness of language patterns which involve the expression of modal stance.

Opis:
A basic problem for contrastive lexical studies in general is to find a model for the semantic analysis. This paper is one in a series of corpus-based contrastive studies of the field of Verbal Communication Verbs (VCVs) in English and Swedish. Searle’s classification of speech acts serves as an important starting point but is not directly concerned with lexical structure, which is a major concern for the two theories that are compared in this study. FrameNet based on Fillmore’s theory of semantic frames and Wierzbicka’s theory of semantic primitives (or “primes”). The theories are applied and tested on data from the English Swedish Parallel Corpus (ESPC) containing English and Swedish original texts together with their translations into the other language. Primarily two groups of English verbs and their Swedish correspondents will be analyzed: (1) Information verbs such as tell, inform, notify, report, narrate and describe and (2) Speech activity verbs such as talk, speak, chat, converse, gossip, discuss, debate, negotiate and bargain. There is also an analysis of Swedish berätta ‘tell, narrate’ based on the Multilingual Parallel Corpus (MPC) as an example of multilingual contrastive analysis. Frames relate in a clear way the conceptual structure and the syntactic argument structure, which is very useful in a contrastive study. However, the definition of the meaning of individual verbs is incomplete and needs to be complemented with some kind of decompositional analysis such as the theory of semantic primes. A special section is devoted to an analysis of a large number of compound and derived forms of the Swedish verb tala ‘speak’ and a discussion of how contrasts in morphological structure can affect the lexical contrasts between two languages.

Ever since the advent of the Covid-19 pandemic, several parliaments around the world have had to completely or partially close down, yet parliaments perform key roles in fashioning out laws and policies for the fight against the disease. To this end, the views of parliamentarians about the pandemic and its related issues are crucial for legislation and control of the disease, yet studies have hardly examined the views and the discourses of parliamentarians around the Covid-19 pandemic. Employing a corpus-assisted methodological approach and conceptual metaphor theory, this study examines the discourses of Ghanaian parliamentarians around the disease in order to explore how the parliamentarians metaphorically construct the pandemic. The study finds that the Covid-19 pandemic is metaphorically constructed as an enemy and the fight against it construed as war. Being a war, it entails several constituent elements without which the war will be unsuccessful, including the soldiers of the war (medical workers, frontline workers, government, parliament), who need weapons (medical tools, personal protective equipment, vaccine) to battle Covid-19 on the battlefield (Ghana, hospitals, treatment centres) to avoid/reduce the number of casualties/victims (Ghanaians, economy, society ) by putting in place certain strategies (creation of a Covid-19 fund, protocols, quarantine). The study contributes to the ongoing discourses aimed at understanding the global experiences of the Covid-19 pandemic as well as an understanding that aspects of metaphor that reflect natural kinds of experience may be universal.

Opis:
This article presents a contrastive study of the English verbs ask and answer and their Swedish correspondents based on data from the English Swedish Parallel Corpus (ESPC), which is bi-directional and contains Swedish and English original texts and their corresponding translations. As a background, a short overview is given of Verbal Communication Verbs (VCVs) in general with brief discussions of speech act theory (Searle), direct and reported speech and conceptual frames (FrameNet) and their syntactic realizations. The contrastive study is concerned with networks of polysemy and the relationships of various senses with differing syntactic realizations across languages. The senses of ask are primarily distributed between two verbs in Swedish: fråga ‘ask a question’ and be ‘request (politely)’ but even some verbs with more specific meanings are involved. The concept of answering forms a conceptual network which is similar in English and Swedish but contrasts with respect to the way meanings are divided up between various verbs. English has a number of verbs such as answer, reply, respond, correspond, retort and rejoin, whereas Swedish to a great extent relies on one verb (svara) and its morphological derivations: besvara, ansvara, motsvara, försvara. In the Conclusion, pedagogical applications of the study are briefly discussed.

The paper addresses issues related to language and gender, and discusses research on the frequency of adjectives in language of male and female characters in a TV drama series “Homeland”. The empirical part of the study uses as its theoretical background the classic works in the field (Lakoff 1975; Butler 1990; Meyerhoff 2006), which identify gender specific language features and define factors that determine male-female language differences. The research was conducted manually, with minor help of electronic tools, on a personally created language corpus consisting of dialogue lines from the TV show. The results clearly show that the frequency of adjectives in female speech is higher than in male speech in the studied corpus.

The aim of this paper is to establish the repertoire and distribution of verbal and adverbial exponents of epistemic modality in English- and Polish-language judgments passed by the Court of Justice of the EU (CJEU) and non-translated judgments passed by the Supreme Court of Poland (SN). The study applies a model for categorizing exponents of epistemicity with regard to their (i) level (high-, medium- and low-level of certainty, necessity or possibility expressed by the markers; primary dimension), (ii) perspective (own vs. reported perspective), (iii) opinion (based either on facts or beliefs) and (iv) time (the embedding of epistemic markers in sentences relating to the past, present or future) (contextual dimensions). It examines the degree of intra-generic convergence of translated EU judgments and non-translated national judgments in terms of the employment of epistemic markers, as well as the degree of authoritativeness of judicial argumentation, and determines whether the frequent use of epistemic markers constitutes a generic feature of judgments. The research material consists of a parallel corpus of English- and Polish-language versions of 200 EU judgments and a corpus of 200 non-translated domestic judgments. The results point to the high salience and differing patterns of use of epistemic markers in both EU and national judgments. The frequent use of high-level epistemic markers boosts the authoritativeness of judicial reasoning.
Celem pracy jest ustalenie zasobu i dystrybucji czasownikowych i przysłówkowych wykładników modalności epistemicznej w angielsko- i polskojęzycznych tłumaczeniach wyroków Trybunału Sprawiedliwości UE (CJEU) i nietłumaczonych wyrokach Sądu Najwyższego RP (SN).

The purpose of this paper is to describe so-called “marked” intonation. What this means is that the intonation contour is indicated by a sharply rising pitch. This is a case study that focuses on the forms and functions of that type of rising intonation patterns which occur not in questions (interrogative mood) but in statements (indicative mood). The linguistic data consists of audio recording and transcriptions taken from the GeWiss, a comparative corpus of spoken academic language. The analysis shows that intonation contours are not subordinate to grammar and that they do not depend on modality.
