Parathion methyl is a widely used organophosphorus pesticide (OPs). OPs in agroecosystems cause severe health and environmental effects. In this study, the Pilobolus inoculum’s ability to remove parathion methyl in microsystems corn crop was evaluated at the laboratory level. Agricultural soils containing Pilobolus inoculum were exposed to 50 μg/dm3 of parathion methyl. The results showed that Pilobolus inoculum can eliminate parathion methyl in 80% of microsystems, and positively influences 20% of the physiological processes of corn plants. This research into the field of myco-remediation widens the use of little-studied fungal species such as Pilobolus to remove pesticides.

In the last decades, the production of biomass biofuels for thermochemical conversion to replace fossil fuels has attracted increasing attention as it offers significant environmental benefits. A very common way to convert biomass to energy is methane fermentation. The importance of biogas as a source of energy is growing. The use of biomass to biogas production on a large, global scale may lead to controversial competition for arable land, water, and consequently, food. Therefore, only waste materials and agricultural by-products and residues should be used for biogas production. Corn stover is a good example of agricultural residues for biogas production. Therefore, the aim of these studies was to determine the influence of corn variety earliness FAO on the chemical compositions and energy value of morphological parts (fractions) of corn plants. The research material consisted of morphological parts of corn plants: stalks, leaves, husks, and cobs of selected corn cultivars, differing in terms of their FAO earliness: early (FAO 220), medium-early (FAO 240) and late (FAO 300) varieties. The research included laboratory investigations, elemental analysis, methane fermentation and statistical analyses of results. Based on the results of the study, it was concluded that the FAO earliness of a corn variety had a significant impact on the elemental composition, ash content, biogas, and methane yield in the corn morphological fractions. The highest methane yield of 267.4 m3 x Mg-1 TS was found for the cucurbit cover leaves of a variety with an FAO 240 earliness standard.
W ostatnich dekadach produkcja biopaliw z biomasy do konwersji termochemicznej w celu zastąpienia paliw kopalnianych przyciąga coraz większą uwagę, ponieważ oferuje istotne korzyści dla środowiska. Fermentacja metanowa jest bardzo popularnym sposobem konwersji biomasy na energię. Znaczenie biogazu jako źródła energii wzrasta. Zastosowanie biomasy do produkcji biogazu na dużą, światową skalę może prowadzić do kontrowersji związanych z konkurowaniem o grunty orne, wodę, a w konsekwencji o żywność. Dlatego do produkcji biogazu powinny być wykorzystywane wyłącznie odpady, produkty uboczne oraz pozostałości rolnicze. Dobrym przykładem pozostałości rolniczych do produkcji biogazu jest słoma kukurydziana. Dlatego celem tych badań było określenie wpływu wzorca wczesności odmian FAO na skład chemiczny i wartość energetyczną części morfologicznych kukurydzy. Materiałem badawczym były morfologiczne części kukurydzy: łodygi, liście, liście okrywe, rdzenie kolb wybranych odmian kukurydzy zróżnicowane pod względem wskaźnika wczesności odmiany FAO: wczesne (FAO 220), średnio-wczesne (FAO 240) oraz późne (FAO 300). Badania obejmowały analizę chemiczną, fermentację metanową oraz analizę statystyczną wyników. Na podstawie wyników badań stwierdzono, że wskaźnik wczesności odmian FAO miał istotny wpływ na skład chemiczny, zawartość popiołu, uzysk biogazu i metanu z części morfologicznych kukurydzy. Najwyższy uzysk metanu 267,4 m3 Mg-1 TS osiągnięto dla liści okrywowych kukurydzy odmiany o wskaźniku wczesności FAO 240.

This study identified the zones likely to apply high-tech rice and corn technology based on criteria from different expert groups. Based on the resulting limiting factor for ability suitable, structural and non-structural solutions have been proposed to improve the suitability of rice and corn with high-tech applications. It was the basic foundation to support strategic planners in agricultural development sustainability in the future. High technology application in agricultural production is an inevitable trend in today’s society. In Vietnam, high-tech agricultural production has developed for a long time in high-tech industrial park production. However, in agricultural production, applying high technology with mass production has yet to have any specific regulations on criteria for implementation in production. On that basis, the research aimed at determining the requirements for developing high-tech agriculture with mass production. Therefore, the predefined criteria for primary and secondary data were developed, which were used for the data collected from farmers, managers, and scientists. Thereby, a production hierarchy of adaptations for rice and corn was built based on consultation results with the farmers and scientists and published studies. The results also made three land adaptation zones apply high technology in mass production for these two crops. The areas suitable for producing rice and corn with high technology applications were marginally suitable, and not suitable prevailed. No region in the An Giang province has a strong potential for cultivating high-tech rice and corn. This result also established adaptive upgrading solutions for applying high technology in the future, which helped improve agricultural production efficiency.

The formation of optimal crop rotations is virtually unsolvable from the standpoint of the classical methodology of experimental research. Here, we deal with a mathematical model based on expert estimates of “predecessor-crop” pairs’ efficiency created for the conditions of irrigation in the forest-steppe of Ukraine. Solving the problem of incorporating uncertainty assessments into this model, we present new models of crop rotations’ economic efficiency taking into account irrigation, application of fertilisers, and the negative environmental effect of nitrogen fertilisers’ introduction into the soil. For the considered models we pose an optimisation problem and present an algorithm for its solution that combines a gradient method and a genetic algorithm. Using the proposed mathematical tools, for several possible scenarios of water, fertilisers, and purchase price variability, the efficiency of growing corn as a monoculture in Ukraine is simulated. The proposed models show a reduction of the profitability of such a practice when the purchase price of corn decreases below 0.81 EUR∙kg-1 and the price of irrigation water increases above 0.32 EUR∙m-3 and propose more flexible crop rotations. Mathematical tools developed in the paper can form a basis for the creation of decision support systems that recommend optimal crop rotation variations to farmers and help to achieve sustainable, profitable, and ecologically safe agricultural production. However, future works on the actualisation of the values of its parameters need to be performed to increase the accuracy.

In the paper, three different physico-chemical pretreatment methods in relation to bioethanol production were compared. The wood of fast-growing poplar species (Populus deltoides x maximowiczii and Populus trichocarpa Torr. & A. Gray ex Hook) and corn stover were used as a feedstock. The chemical composition and enzymatic hydrolysis efficiency of the biomass before and after pretreatments were compared. On the basis of the results, it was concluded that the applied pretreatments changed the chemical composition of the raw materials. In the case of the acid and LHW (liquid hot water pretreatment) methods, up to 93.7% of hemicelluloses (especially pentosans) were removed. From among the selected pretreatment methods, the LHW and alkaline methods occurred to be the most interesting. Nevertheless, from the bioethanol production point of view, the LHW process of Populus deltoides x maximowiczii wood was the best because after enzymatic hydrolysis, high amounts of glucose (up to 600.9 mg/g pretreated biomass) and minor amounts of xylose (up to 37.9 mg/g pretreated biomass) were produced. Moreover, based on the chemical composition and sugar profile analysis, it was proved that the Populus trichocarpa wood also has a high potential for bioethanol production.

The aim of this paper was to review scientific studies concerning the nutritional value and healthy properties of sweet corn kernels. Sweet corn (Zea mays ssp. saccharata) is a popular vegetable in America and many European countries. It is also increasingly recognized in Poland. The practical benefits of sugar corn result, among others, from the nutritional value of caryopses and their taste. The review of the literature of the research subject presented in this paper allows us to state that sugar corn caryopses are a source of carbohydrates (simple sugars, starch), protein, vitamins, mineral ingredients, phenolic acids, carotenoids and dietary fiber. The results of chemical analyses prove that sugar corn kernels do not contain gluten; therefore, this plant plays a particularly important role in the nutrition of people with coeliac disease, and corn flour is a valuable product in the food industry. An increasing number of research evidence shows that the regular consumption of wholemeal corn reduces the risk of developing many chronic diseases, such as cardiovascular diseases, eye diseases, obesity, type 2 diabetes, and digestive diseases. The analysis of the literature of the research subject allows us to conclude that sugar corn should be a permanent element of everyday diet, particularly because it can be consumed both in a fresh and processed form all year round.
Celem pracy był przegląd opracowań naukowych na temat wartości odżywczej oraz właściwości prozdrowotnych ziarna kukurydzy cukrowej. Kukurydza cukrowa (Zea mays ssp. saccharata) jest popularnym warzywem w Ameryce, a także w wielu krajach europejskich. Również w Polsce warzywo to cieszy się coraz większym uznaniem. Zalety użytkowe kukurydzy cukrowej wynikają między innymi z wartości odżywczej ziarniaków oraz ich walorów smakowych. Przegląd literatury przedmiotu badań przedstawiony w niniejszej pracy pozwala stwierdzić, że ziarniaki kukurydzy cukrowej są źródłem węglowodanów (cukry proste, skrobia), białka, witamin, składników mineralnych, kwasów fenolowych, karotenoidów oraz błonnika pokarmowego. Z analiz chemicznych wynika, że ziarno kukurydzy cukrowej nie zawiera glutenu, dlatego roślina ta ma szczególne znaczenie w żywieniu osób chorych na celiakię, a mąka kukurydziana jest cennym surowcem w przemyśle spożywczym. Coraz więcej dowodów naukowych pokazuje, że regularne spożywanie kukurydzy pełnoziarnistej zmniejsza ryzyko rozwoju wielu chorób przewlekłych, takich, jak choroby sercowo-naczyniowe, choroby oczu, otyłość, cukrzyca typu II oraz choroby układu trawiennego. Na podstawie analizy literatury stwierdzono, że kukurydza cukrowa powinna być stałym elementem codziennej diety. Tym bardziej, że może być ona spożywana przez cały rok zarówno w postaci świeżej, jak również przetworzonej.

The goal of this study is to determine the crop water stress index (CWSI) and irrigation scheduling based on CWSI values, as well as to examine the correlations between CWSI, physiological parameters and grain yield of hybrid corn P31A34 in semi-arid climate conditions. In 2014 and 2015, the upper limit (UL) temperatures at which plants were entirely exposed to water stress were 1.178°C and 2.38°C, respectively. When the corn grain yield began to decline, the CWSI threshold value was 0.34, indicating the yield limit. Grain yield, crop water consumption, crop water stress index, chlorophyll content, water use efficiency and leaf area index were found to have negative correlations (p ≤ 0.01) with CWSI values in both years of the study. The findings revealed that in semi-arid climate conditions, a maximum of 30% water deficit could be used during the growing period of the corn compared to full irrigation (I100) for water savings and that a water deficit greater than 30% results in considerable grain yield losses. In areas with limited water resources, the moderate water deficit (I70) may be a viable alternative to the I100.

This study aims to find the possibility of producing eco-friendly thin Medium Density Fibrepanels (MDF) with the participation of corn stalk fibres and using lignosulphonate as a bio-based binder. The main novelty in the research is the establishment of the effect of additional heat treatment on the properties of MDF manufactured with the participation of non-wood lignocellulosic raw materials and bonded with bio-based adhesive – lignosulphonate. Panels with 15% lignosulphonate content and variation of the content of corn stalk fibres from 0% to 30% were manufactured. Previous experiments showed that when only lignosulfonate is used as a binder, the manufactured panels generally have low waterproofness. To reduce the effect of this main disadvantage, the panels were subjected additionally to heat treatment. The properties of the MDF with and without additional heat treatment were compared. The effect of both the content of corn stalk fibres and the additional heat treatment was found. As a whole, the additional heat treatment improves the properties of MDF produced with lignosulphonate. Still, in case of increased content of corn stalk fibres, it is necessary to apply softened regimes than the ones selected for this study.

The study examined the effect of the cornhusk fibers (CHF) content on the structure, physical, mechanical and water barrier properties of composites obtained on the basis of corn starch (CS) and kenaf fiber (KF), used in the amount of 6 wt%. Sorbitol in the amount of 30 wt% was used as a plasticizer. Hybrid biocomposite films were obtained using the solution casting technique. The addition of CHF reduced the water absorption and solubility of the film in water. Increasing the CHF content in the composite resulted in greater film thickness, weight and density. Thanks to good biocompatibility (FESEM) the composites showed higher tensile strength and Young’s modulus. However, elongation at break was lower. FTIR results confirmed the intermolecular hydrogen bonding between the matrix and the fibers. The best properties were obtained at 6 wt% CHF content.
W pracy zbadano wpływ zawartości włókien z łusek kukurydzy (CHF) na strukturę, właściwości fizyczne, mechaniczne i barierowe dla wody kompozytów otrzymanych na bazie skrobi kukurydzianej (CS) i włókna kenaf (KF), stosowanego w ilości 6% mas. Jako plastyfikator użyto sorbitol w ilości 30% mas. Folie biokompozytów hybrydowych otrzymywano techniką odlewania z roztworu. Dodatek CHF zmniejszał absorpcję wody i rozpuszczalność folii w wodzie. Zwiększenie zawartości CHF w kompozycie skutkowało większą grubością, gramaturą i gęstością folii. Dzięki dobrej biozgodności (FESEM) kompozyty wykazały większą wytrzymałość na rozciąganie oraz moduł Younga. Jednak wydłużenie przy zerwaniu było mniejsze. Wyniki FTIR potwierdziły obecność międzycząsteczkowych wiązań wodorowych między osnową polimerową i włóknami. Najlepsze właściwości uzyskano przy zawartości 6% mas. CHF.

Effects of soaking aqueous ammonia pretreatment on chemical composition and enzymatic hydrolysis of corn stover. The aim of this research was to investigate the effect of applying two different temperatures of the soaking aqueous ammonia treatment on the chemical composition and enzymatic hydrolysis yield of the corn stover. Native corn stover as well as solid fractions after 20 h of alkali pretreatment performed at 15% ammonia solution and at 50 °C or 90 °C were analysed in terms of cellulose, holocellulose, lignin and extractives content. Both untreated and treated samples were subjected to the enzymatic hydrolysis and hydrolysates were examined with a high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). Results indicated a significant development of enzymatic digestibility of the SAA treated biomass. Furthermore, a 38.7% and a 68.9% delignification levels in the biomass treated with ammonia at respectively 50 °C and 90 °C process comparing to the raw material were achieved.
Wpływ wstępnej obróbki słomy kukurydzianej w wodnym roztworze amoniaku (SAA) na jej skład chemiczny i hydrolizę enzymatyczną. Celem badań było zbadanie wpływu zastosowania dwóch rożnych temperatur podczas obróbki wstępnej wodnym roztworem amoniaku słomy kukurydzianej na jej skład chemiczny oraz wydajność hydrolizy enzymatycznej. Próbki słomy natywnej, jak i słomy po 20 godzinach obróbki w 15% roztworze amoniaku i temperaturze 50 °C lub 90 °C zostały przebadane pod kątem zawartości celulozy, hemiceluloz, ligniny i substancji ekstrakcyjnych. Zarówno materiał natywny, jak i po obróbce został podany również hydrolizie enzymatycznej, a hydrolizaty zostały przebadane przy pomocy wysokosprawnej chromatografii cieczowej (HPLC). Uzyskane wyniki pozwoliły stwierdzić wysoce zwiększoną zawartość cukrów w hydrolizatach biomasy po obróbce SAA. Ponadto, osiągnięto 38.7% oraz 68.9% poziom delignifikacji odpowiednio po procedurze SAA przeprowadzonej w 50 °C i 90 °C.

Price interactions and causal relationships among corn, exchange rate and animal protein sources in Nigeria

Price transmissions between corn, exchange rate, poultry meat, and fish were investigated using the data from OECD-FAO for the years 1990-2019, to establish the existence of long-term relationships between them and identify their directions of causality, in order to elicit investmentaiding facts. The augmented Dickey-Fuller (ADF) test, the Johansen cointegration approach and the Granger causality test were employed. Following the ADF test, all series are I(1), while the cointegration test indicates short-run dynamics between them. The Vector Autoregressive (VAR) system reveals that poultry meat price influences all variables, prices of poultry meat and exchange rate relate positively to their own lags, and exchange rate relates positively to lags of poultry meat prices. A positive relationship was noticed between fish price and lags of poultry meat price, while corn price relates positively with lags of poultry meat price. Granger causality tests indicate unidirectional drives from poultry price to fish price, the exchange rate to fish price and poultry meat price to corn price. Responses from prices of fish, corn and poultry to innovations from exchange rate are negative, while positive responses exist in other scenarios. Exchange rate stabilization will mitigate external risks, especially to the fisheries sector, while corn farmers can increase profits in the short-run by exploring knowledge of poultry meat price movements.

Agricultural residues rich in lignocellulosic biomass are low-cost and sustainable adsorbents widely used in water treatment. In the present research, thermodynamics, kinetics, and equilibrium of nickel(II) and lead(II) ion biosorption were studied using a corncob (Zea mays). The experiments were performed in a batch system evaluating the effect of temperature and dose of adsorbent. Langmuir and Freundlich isotherms were used to study the equilibrium. Thermodynamic and kinetic parameters were determined using kinetic models (pseudo-first order, pseudo-second order, Elovich). Biosorbent characteristics were studied by Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, Scanning Electron Microscopy and Energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy. It was found that the hydroxyl, carboxyl, and phenolic groups are the major contributors to the removal process. Besides, Pb(II) ions form micro-complexes on the surface of the biomaterial while Ni(II) ions form bonds with active centers. It was found that the highest Ni(II) removal yields were achieved at 0.02 g of adsorbent and 70°C, while the highest Pb(II) removal yields were achieved at 0.003 g and 55°C. A maximum Ni(II) adsorption capacity of 3.52 mg∙g–1 (86%) and 13.32 mg∙g–1 (94.3%) for Pb(II) was obtained in 250 and 330 min, respectively. Pseudo-first order and pseudo-second order models best fit experimental data, and Langmuir and Freundlich models well describe the isotherm of the process. Thermodynamic parameters (ΔH0, ΔG0, ΔS0) suggest that the adsorption process of both cations is exothermic, irreversible, and not spontaneous.

The aim of the investigation was to review experimental articles and patents referring to corn-based nutritional products for sportspeople published in the period 1970–2019. Publications were searched in the ISI Web of Science and Scopus databases, as well as the Google Scholar and Google Patents internet search engines. Factorial combinations of the keywords (“Zea mays” or “maize” or “corn”) and (“athlete” or “sport”) were applied. Most papers and patents were published in the period 2010–2019 by researchers affiliated to the USA and China – the two largest global producers of corn. Altogether, 65 patents and 16 articles were recorded. Inventors patented food supplements based on corn-derived saccharides and proteins. Empirical articles were devoted to the impact of corn-based food products on health of sportspeople, evaluation of the impact of length of consumption on the metabolism and performance of athletes, as well the frequency of use and acceptance of nutritional products based on corn by sportspeople. Despite growing interest in the application of corn constituents in nutritional products for sportspeople, further investigations are strongly desirable.

Anaerobic co-digestion of sewage sludge and corn silage with zero-valent iron powder (Fe0), cellulase, and papain as reinforcement means was conducted. COD-based feeding ratio of sewage sludge to corn silage was set to 2:1, the solids retention time (SRT) 20 day, digestion temperature 35 °C, and mixing speed 60 rpm. Removal rates of total COD during the control group, and Fe0, papain, cellulase, and papain, Fe0, and the two kinds of enzyme-added tests were 38.04, 41.02, 34.62, 34.55, 35.42, and 48.21%, respectively. The corresponding biogas production was 2.12, 2.62, 2.22, 2.41, 2.25, and 2.81 dm3/day, respectively. The results indicated the addition of cellulase, and papain could maximize the decomposition and hydrolysis of organic matter in sewage sludge and corn silage to volatile fatty acids. Fe0 could reduce the redox potentials of the anaerobic co-digestion, optimize the circumstances of the methanogenesis stage, accelerate biogas production, and improve biogas components. Fe0 and enzymes played a synergistic role in the anaerobic co-digestion system. Life cycle assessment indicated that the anaerobic co-digestion of sludge and corn silage co-substrates could benefit the economy, environment, and social development under the synergistic action of Fe0 and enzymes.
