Opis:
To extend the knowledge on the fragments of Proteus penneri lipopolysaccharide core regions, which determine the cross-reactions with specific antibodies, serological studies were performed by use of P. penneri 7 core-specific antiserum and Proteus sp. lipopolysaccharides. Different reactivity of the tested antiserum with three groups of antigens suggested differences in their core regions' epitope specificity. Comparing the results of the serological investigations with the previously determined structures of the core regions of the tested P. penneri lipopolysaccharides allowed distinguishing two potential tri- and tetrasaccharide epitopes and a third fragment which could not be determined precisely.

Opis:
The rough mutants of Gram-negative bacteria are widely used to induce protective antisera but the nature of the target epitope for such antibodies is not precisely defined. Endotoxin is one of several antigens present on the surface of bacterial cells, which are able to elicit specific antibodies. We studied the specificity of antibodies produced against a conjugate of E. coli J5 endotoxin core oligosaccharide with tetanus toxoid. The use of chemically defined antigen for immunisation excludes the possibility of production of antibodies against other cell surface antigens. A comparison of this monospecific anti-endotoxin serum with antiserum against E. coli J5 whole cells was performed in order to distinguish the role that endotoxin core oligosaccharide plays in the interaction with humoral host defences from that of other potentially important Gram-negative bacterial surface antigens. The reactivity of both sera with smooth and rough lipopolysaccharides was determined in ELISA, immunoblotting and by flow cytometry. Both antisera reacted with similar specificity with most lipopolysaccharides of identical or related core type. Less distinct reactions with endotoxins of the antibacterial serum in comparison with the anti-conjugate serum were found in all serological tests. LPS of E. coli O100 that showed the strongest reactions with both sera was used to stimulate IL-6, TNFα and nitric oxide production by the J-774A.1 cell line. Both sera were used to inhibit that stimulation and no inhibitory effects of the examined sera in comparison with non-immune serum were observed.

Opis:
Most Proteus lipopolysaccharides (LPSs) contain uronic acids or their amides with different amino acids, which together with other negatively charged components account for the acidic character of such LPS molecules. Previous studies have shown the significance of an amide of galacturonic acid with lysine [D-GalA(L-Lys)] for serological specificity of O-antigens from few P. mirabilis strains. In this work, the immunodominant role of GalALys was indicated for the P. penneri 42 LPS core region. The studies also showed the serological identity of core oligosaccharides from P. penneri 42 (O71), P. mirabilis 51/57 (O28) and R14/S1959 strains.

Opis:
A new nuclear model to calculate the binding energy of nuclei is proposed. The nucleus is assumed to be composed of two regions; the inner core region and surface region. The inner core is assumed to be composed of Z proton-neutron pairs (Z = N) and the surface region is composed of the unpaired neutrons for a nucleus in which N>Z. The interaction between the core and neutrons in the surface region is assumed to be such that it leads to an average potential Vo in which each neutron in the surface region can move. Knowing the experimental values for the binding energy of nuclei, this average interaction potential Vo has been calculated for light, medium and heavy nuclei. It is found that Vo varies for isotopes and isotones. For isotopes the value of Vo decreases as the neutron number (N) in the surface region of the nucleus increases. The decrease in Vo is quite large when the neutron number increases by unity in light nuclei compared to heavy nuclei. For isotones, the value of Vo increases with an increase in proton number (Z). This is evident for both light nuclei and heavy nuclei.

Opis:
A history of landscape development in the Russian part of the Neman Delta area during the Holocene, with an emphasis on the formation of forests and wetlands, is deduced based on pollen analysis, radiocarbon dating, a field topography survey, and macrofossil analysis of peat deposits in a coastal mire, the Koz’ye Bog. Several 1,000–2,000-year time lags in vegetational development were revealed here, though they have not been recorded for other landscapes in the Kaliningrad Region and the adjacent areas in the southeastern Baltic. The causes are still not completely clear, but they presumably related to some of the regional patterns of climate development and the submergence of the area during the second Littorina transgression (7,500–7,000 cal. yr BP). It is established that cryophilic open tundra-like vegetation existed here not only in Late Glacial time (Younger Dryas) but up to the mid-Boreal (9,700–9,500 cal. yr BP). A transition from the open landscapes of the Late Glacial to birch and then pine forests occurred here 9,700–8,700 cal. yr BP, whereas the expansion of thermophilic broadleaf species of the nemoral (temperate) association (Quercus, Ulmus, Tilia, Corylus) was recorded only in the period 6,400–3,500 cal. yr BP. Peak expansion of Alnus occurred here only in the late Subboreal (3,500–2,700 cal. yr BP), while in adjacent areas it reached its maximum as early as the Atlantic. The general vegetation dynamics in this area during the Late Glacial and the Holocene could be referred to as a transition from the dominance of pine forests to a wide dispersal of alder carrs. This environmental shift was caused not only by climatic factors but probably also due to the transformation of the hilly coastal terrace into a low-lying plain landscape after flooding during the transgressions of the Baltic.
