Opis:
Copper oxide ore was pre-concentrated using near infrared sensor-based method and classified as product, middling and waste. The product and middling fractions were leached with ammonium chloride reagent. The effect of temperature, ammonium chloride concentration, solid- liquid ratio, stirring speed and particle size experimental variables were investigated. Mineralogical and chemical analysis of the ore fractions indicated that copper content was in accordance with the preconcentration strategy, with the product having a higher concentration than the middling and waste. The rate of copper extraction was found to be higher in the product than in the middling sample which further supports the near infrared classification, QEMSCAN®, X-ray diffraction, SEM mineralogical and X-ray florescence and Inductively coupled plasma Mass spectrometry chemical data. It was revealed that the leaching rate increases with increasing ammonium chloride concentration, temperature and decreasing ore particle size, stirring speed and solid-liquid ratio. Analysis of the experimental data by shrinking core model indicated that the dissolution kinetics follow the heterogeneous reaction model for the chemical control mechanism where the activation energies of 45.9 kJ/mol and 47.5 kJ/mol for product and middling fractions respectively were obtained. Characterization of the residue obtained at optimum leaching condition with X-ray diffraction suggests that copper was selectively leached when compared to the profile of the raw ore. The trace levels of metals associated with abundant X-ray diffraction profiles of residue found in the leachate further confirm the selective leaching process.

Opis:
Although the operating properties of GalvanoxTM leaching have been widely studied in the literature, several factors concerning chalcopyrite passivation during the process remain unknown so far. The present work hence aims at investigating the significant effect of externally added pyrite features with a particular focus on its particle size (d80 of 0.52, 20, 45 and 2000 µm) through a series of experiments performed in a 2-L stirred-tank electro-reactor. To this end, the role of pyrite: chalcopyrite ratio (0.49:1, 2:1 and 4:1) and presence of electrical current were examined while the rest of the parameters kept constant (80 °C temperature, 400–500 mV (Ag/AgCl) redox potential, pulp density of 10% (w/v), and stirring rate of 1200 rpm). Plus, kinetic models of the leaching tests were studied based on the diffusion and chemical controlling concepts. It was found that the coarser the pyrite particles, the more favorable the copper extraction from the concentrate due to acceleration of reactions in the cathodic electrode and high mass transfers. However, this was in contradiction with the existing reports in the literature. Moreover, galvanic interactions became intensive in the presence of pyrite meaning extensive chalcopyrite dissolution with significantly reduced passivation. Ultimate copper extraction values of 24.17±1.25%, 55.79±0.91% and 57.26±1.59% were resulted at Py:Cp ratios of 0.49:1 (natural), 2:1 and 4:1, respectively. The results showed that maximum copper recovery of 67.32±2.34% was obtained at an optimum condition of pyrite grain size=2000 µm, Py:Cp=4:1, current application=500 mA, 8 h and 80 °C. Finally, detailed kinetic modeling indicated that the chemical control mechanism was dominant in the early reaction stages (t<3.5 h) concerning the availability of fresh surface for chemical agents; however, the second half of the process (8.0 h>t>3.5 h) was controlled by the diffusion control.

Recovery of silver and lead by means of chloride leaching of solid residue after atmospheric leaching of the copper concentrate from Lubin Concentrator (KGHM) was investigated. The effect of leaching temperature, chloride concentration, Fe(III) and oxygen presence, solid-to-liquid ratio and feed preleaching with NaOH on the silver and lead recovery was analyzed. Chloride leaching appeared to be very effective for recovery of lead, whereas satisfactory recovery of silver was observed after chemical pretreatment of the leaching feed with alkali solution of NaOH in order to liberate Ag entrapped in the jarosite structure. It was found that to achieve the satisfactory recovery of Ag and Pb leaching had to be performed in acidified 4 M chloride concentration at temperature of 90 oC. The presence of oxidants, that is O2 and iron(III) ions, was beneficial in the initial stage of the process. The maximum recovery of Ag and Pb was found for the solid-to-liquid ratio of 1:10 after 10 hours leaching.

Opis:
Rapidly declining quality of copper concentrates produced by Lubin Concentrator of KGHM Polska Miedz SA, having very low content of Cu, high content of Pb, As and organic carbon as well as significant contents of Ag, Co, Ni, Zn, Re, V and Mo, makes the concentrates difficult-to-process by flash smelting. Currently hydrometallurgy, using sulfuric acid in the presence of iron(III) and oxygen as a leaching medium for base metals and chloride leaching for silver and lead, seems to be an alternative for pyrometallurgy. The goal of the work is to discuss main aspects of the necessity of application a new hydrometallurgical technology, based on different unit operations, including non-oxidative atmospheric, chloride and pressure leaching, recovery of Pb and Ag, separation of Cu and accompanying metals from PLS and arsenic neutralization. The unique lithological, mineralogical and chemical properties of the process feed were discussed in details. The results of laboratory investigations performed at the Wroclaw University of Technology and assumptions of the process scale-up for acquisition of data for full scale technology were summarized. Planned investigations on the pilot plant scale will provide technical and economic data for a pre-feasibility study of the future hydrometallurgical plant.

Opis:
In this work extraction of copper and iron from a reverberatory furnace slag was studied. A two-step extraction procedure was followed. The first step was roasting of the slag in the presence of sulphuric acid at temperatures between 150 and 800oC. The second step was leaching of the resulting calcine with distilled water. The maximum copper extraction of about 94% was achieved. In this case, the slag was roasted at 250oC with sulphuric acid higher of about 33% than that stoichiometrically required, followed by water leaching of calcine at 50oC. About 55% of iron was also dissolved under these conditions. On the other hand, for the calcine obtained at sulphation temperature of 600oC, extraction of copper in a water leaching stage was still relatively high (about 79%), whereas that of iron was comparatively low (about 6%). Dissolution of copper and iron from the calcine was found to be very fast and was complete within the first few minutes. The water temperature in the leaching step was found to have no effect on extraction of copper and iron from the calcine in the range of 30 to 85oC.

An experimental study on leaching of cobalt and nickel from a Lubin (Poland) sulfide flotation copper concentrate with oxygenated sulphuric acid solution in the presence of iron(III) sulfate is presented. The effect of temperature, iron(III) concentration, initial sulphuric acid concentration, oxygen flow rate and chloride ions addition on cobalt and nickel leaching were examined. The obtained results show, that enhancing investigated leaching parameters increases both the rate and leaching recovery of nickel and cobalt. The effect of iron(III) ions concentration is particularly significant. Additionally, a significant correlation between copper and nickel/cobalt leaching recovery was observed. Due to the fine dissemination of nickel and cobalt, they were leached remarkably faster when copper leaching recovery exceeded 90%.

Opis:
This study was undertaken to improve gold and silver extraction from a pyritic gold flotation concentrate, which assayed 11 g/t Au, 42 g/t Ag, 0.21% Cu, 3.57% Zn, and 31% Fe. Direct cyanide leaching of the concentrate at 1.5 g/L NaCN yielded a low gold extraction (37%), confirming its refractory nature. Effects of lead nitrate (200-500 g/t Pb(NO3)2) and pre-aeration (24 h) before cyanide leaching at 1.5-3.5 g/L NaCN were investigated. Earlier studies have focused on the impact of these parameters on gold leaching. Besides gold, this study demonstrated the behaviour of silver and base metals (copper and zinc) from the pyritic gold concentrate. Adding lead nitrate had a negligible effect on gold extraction whilst improving silver extraction. Dissolution of copper was substantially suppressed by adding lead nitrate, i.e., from 23% (no Pb(NO3)2) to 4% (500 g/t Pb(NO3)2) over 24 h. Zinc dissolution was negligible (≤0.01%). Pre-aeration of the concentrate improved the gold and silver extractions by 4-14% and 23-44% at the subsequent cyanide leaching (1.5-3.5 g/L NaCN). However, it did not affect the leaching of copper. Only negligible leaching of zinc (≤0.6%) occurred during cyanide leaching. Pre-aeration also reduced cyanide consumption in subsequent cyanide leaching (1.5 g/L NaCN), i.e., from 2.83 kg/t to 2.03 kg/t NaCN per solids. These results suggested that lead nitrate can improve silver extraction while suppressing copper dissolution, which would be advantageous in the leaching-adsorption circuit (CIP), mitigating the dissolved copper-associated problems. Pre-aeration can also be suitable for improved gold/silver extractions and reduced reagent consumption.

There are two methods to produce primary copper: hydrometallurgical and pyrometallurgical. Copper concentrates, from which copper matte is melted, constitute the charge at melting primary copper in the pyrometallurgical process. This process consists of a few stages, of which the basic ones are roasting and smelting. Smelting process may be bath and flash. Slag from copper production, on the end of process contain less 0,8%. It is treat as a waste or used other field, but only in a few friction. The slag amount for waste management or storage equaled 11 741 – 16 011 million tons in 2011. This is a serious ecological problem. The following slags were investigated: slag originated from the primary copper production process in the flash furnace of the Outtokumpuja Company in HM Głogów 2 (Sample S2): the same slag after the copper removal performed according the up to now technology (Sample S1): slag originated from the primary copper production process in the flash furnace of the Outtokumpuja Company in HM Głogów 2, after the copper removal performed according the new technology (Sample S3). In practice, all tested slags satisfy the allowance criteria of storing on the dumping grounds of wastes other than hazardous and neutral.

Opis:
Turkish metallurgical slag flotation tailing’s (MSFT) that has not been evaluated yet sulphation baking phase transformations and autogenous leaching behaviour were investigated. The MSFT in the study consists of the residual fayalite (FeO•SiO2) phase from the flotation, with a copper recovery of 87%, of the slag released during the smelting of the copper sulphide mine in northern Turkey, and the non-soluble glassy/amorphous structure containing the 0.34%Cu, 4.16%Zn and 0.15%Co base metals locked and doped to this phase. The effects of temperature (350 -650°C) and sulphuric acid dosages (4-10 ml) on sulphation baking were investigated by X-ray diffraction and sulphur analyses of the baked MSFT (B-MSFT) to produce soluble base metal sulphates. Since sulphated metals are a kind of metal salt, autogenous leaching was applied to the B-MSFTs only with purified water to dissolute copper, zinc and cobalt. X-ray diffraction patterns show the transformation of fayalite to oxide and sulphate phases due to sulphation baking. All dissolution values of Co and Zn obtained by autogenous leaching of B-MSFTs produced under all determined conditions are almost the same as one another. This indicates that Co and Zn are doped to fayalite together and that part of cobalt is doped to the zincite structure and liberated and sulphated together. This study showed that MSFTs decompose leading to liberation and sulphation of the doped base metals in its structure at a rate of ≥90%, and that they autogenously dissolve under atmospheric conditions leading to recovery in a simple and economic manner.

In this study, iron selectivity behaviour of copper smelter slag (CSS) flotation tailings (38.08% Fe, 0.35% Cu, 4.48% Zn, 0.16% Co, 0.37% S) having fayalite and magnetite as major minerals was investigated with hematitization baking and base metals leaching methods using mineralogical and chemical analyses. For selectivity of iron, it was baked at temperatures of 650-690-700-710-730°C. The aim of the baking is to transform the almost all of the iron in the fayalite into the oxidized (non-soluble) form and the base metals into the sulphated (soluble) form. The temperature that had the lowest hematitization rate of iron was found to be 650°C, and the highest temperature was found to be 730°C. To examine the dissolution behaviour of baked CSS flotation tailing was leached at 50°C at a 1/10 (w/v) for 1 hour by using water. After baking at 690°C calcine and leaching residue, S values were determinated to be approximately 17% and 9%, respectively. Baking made at 700⁰C, amount of sulfate also decreased to 10% and S content was measured as 4% of its leaching residue. As a result of this study, 690⁰C/700⁰C was determined as optimum conditions of hematitization baking and base metals were extracted selectively when the iron was remained at leaching residue in Fe2O3 phase. It was determined that, hematitization is high and the sulphates of the base metals are preserved at 700⁰C temperature. The fayalite phase completely decomposed into Si-O/Fe-O/Zn-S-O/Co-S-O compounds at 700⁰C baking which was the highest iron selective and base metals dissolute temperature.

Permeability reduction is a major challenge in heap leaching, primarily caused by the accumulation of fines that move with the leaching agent, leading to the formation of dead zones and channeling within the heap. In the Aria copper beneficiation plant, the 0–2 mm fraction with a copper grade of 1.4% undergoes pre-separation prior to heap loading without further processing. This study investigated the potential of using the agglomeration method to improve permeability in the case of using the 0–2 mm fraction of ore. Mineral compounds, such as sodium silicate and calcium sulfate, and non-ionic, cationic, and anionic polymer compounds, were used in the agglomeration process. The strength of interparticle bonding was evaluated by measuring the fine migration percentage (FMP) in the soak test. The results revealed that agglomerates produced using non-ionic compounds had the highest bonding strength, with an FMP of 3.89%, the lowest of all the compounds tested. This enhanced bonding strength was attributed to the combined influence of hydrogen bonding forces and van der Waals forces.

The amount of waste printed circuit board (WPCB) increases continuously. There is an economic and environmental need to recover valuable metals from WPCBs. In this study, the applicability of oxidative pressurized acid leaching of WPCBs rich in copper and tin was investigated. The effect of leaching parameters such as temperature, partial oxygen pressure and chloride concentration on metal dissolution from WPCBs was studied in sulfuric acid media. It was shown that non-metallic elements present in WPCBs initiated gas formation, namely CO2 and CO, during oxidized pressure acid leach. Decomposition of plastic components already started at 90 °C with 1.5 MPa oxygen overpressure in the presence of 1 g/dm3 chlorides. Gas formation was shown to have a negative impact on the process since copper extraction was reduced to 27% compared to 80-90% extraction achieved from anode slimes used as a reference material. It was suggested that gas formation related to plastic components could have a severe impact on metal yields. The highest dissolution of tin equal to 36% was achieved at room temperature. It was found that higher temperature promoted tin hydrolysis.

The rapidly declining quality of ores and concentrates produced by Lubin Concentrator (KGHM) makes the flotation concentrates exceptionally difficult-to-process by flash smelting. Currently, a hydrometallurgical process, using sulfuric acid with the presence of oxidants as a leaching medium, seems to be either a reasonable alternative or a complementary option to pyrometallurgy. The unique lithological, mineralogical and chemical properties of the concentrate were considered in a selection of the process route. Results of a pressure leaching of the copper sulfide concentrate from Lubin Concentrator (ZWR Lubin) with oxygenated aqueous H2SO4 solutions are presented. The effect of temperature from 120 to 200 °C, initial concentration of H2SO4 from 60 to 100 g/dm3, and oxygen partial pressure ranging from 0.5 to 2.0 MPa were investigated. The pressure leaching appeared to be an efficient process for recovering copper from the Lubin concentrate. At optimal leaching conditions (140 °C, 100 g/dm3 H2SO4, 1.0 MPa O2) 96% of Cu was extracted after 4 h.
