Rapeseed plants were exposed to seven different concentrations (0.5, 1, 3, 6, 12, 24, 60 μmol · dm–3) of CuSO4•5H2O for 7 days. Within concentration range 0.5-3 μmol · dm–3 a significant increase of biomass (both plant organs) was observed. Decrease of biomass was notable after application of concentrations higher than 6 mol · dm–3. Considerable drop in content of chlorophylls as well as carotenoids was observed after application of 6 mol · dm–3 Cu(II). Decline of protein content in leaves of plants was observed in concentration range 6-60 mol · dm–3. Lipid peroxidation expressed as a content of malondialdehyde in leaves was strong within concentration range 6-60 μmol · dm–3 Cu(II). Bioaccumulation factor values of roots were higher then those of shoots in the whole concentration range (0.5-60 μmol · dm–3 Cu). The portion of Cu allocated in shoots related to the total Cu amount accumulated by plant ranged from 27.6% (0.5 μmol · dm–3) to 8.4% (60 μmol · dm–3).

Opis:
The study focused on the influence of an increased copper content in the Murashige and Skoog (1962) solid medium on the in vitro plant growth and development of Dendrobium kingianum Bidwill. Sterile explants of pseudobulbs were used for micropropagation of orchid plants on the MS regeneration medium supplemented with 0.5 mg dm-3 NAA and 1.0 mg dm-3 kinetin. Copper (as CuSO4 × 5H2O) was added to all the combinations in concentrations of 0.025 (control), 0.625, 1.25, 2.5 and 5.0 mg dm-3. The results showed that the treatments with 1.25 and 2.5 mg dm-3 stimulated the orchid growth and development in in vitro culture. After eight months of growing in in vitro culture, the highest number of shoots, the longest roots and the heaviest fresh weight of plantlets were obtained in these treatments. In medium with the highest copper concentration (5.0 mg dm-3), a negative influence of the metal on the length of roots and fresh weight of orchids was noted. Spectrophotometric analysis (ASA) showed that the copper and iron accumulation increased in both shoots and roots with the increase in the external Cu level, whereas the zinc and calcium accumulation in these organs decreased. The copper and zinc accumulation in the roots was about 1.5-2.5 times higher than in the shoots, but the iron accumulation was about 3-3.5 times higher. The calcium accumulation in roots was only 5-12% higher than in shoots.

"Rudna" copper mine

Opis:
A block development operation at the "Rudna" copper mine (KGHM Polska Miedź S.A.) encountered a "compressed gas trap" that caused the ejection of fragmented rock material into a drift. Faced with a new threat of gas ejection the mine needed to find methods to identify potential gas concentration zones prior to any further exploration work. Surface seismic surveying was chosen as a widely-accepted standard method of investigating rockmass structure and tectonics and pinpointing natural gas deposits. An area of one square kilometre was selected directly above the ejection site, a 3D seismic survey, known as Duża Wólka 3D, was performed and a survey well S-421A was drilled. The objective was to investigate the overall rock structure, especially the structure of Zechstein and top Rotliegendes formations, as well as to attempt identifying anomalous zones, which could be linked with the gas saturation of Ca1 dolomites, on the 3D seismic image at the P1 level (Zechstein/ Rotliegendes boundary). An interpretation of multi-scenario seismic modelling of the recorded data helped to: – recognize the structure and tectonics of the area, including minor faults cutting through the top-level Rotliegendes formations and floor-level Zechstein formations. Such faults could constitute migration channels for Carboniferous-period gases, – locate zones with nearly zero-reflection amplitude at the surface of the top-level Rotliegendes (P1 seismic boundary), which would suggest a reduction of elastic parameters of the Ca1 dolomite. This reduction could be linked to an increased porosity and fracturing of the dolomite and its saturation with gas (a reduction of the seismic wavelet propagation velocity). Credibility of this interpretation is already partly corroborated by data from wells drilled in the Zechstein limestone by the mine. The paper presents the first in the world attempt to use the surface seismic survey for location of zones with small gas concentration in porous rocks at the Zechstein/Rotliegendes boundary. Such zones should not be identified with gas pools that occur in the Zechstein Limestone (Ca1) in the area of the Fore-Sudetic Monocline.

Opis:
The effect of copper stress on betacyanin accumulation and guaiacol peroxidase (GPOD) activity in leaves of different age was evaluated in red beet (Beta vulgaris L. var. Crosby Egyptian) plants. In hydroponic culture, plants were treated with 0.3 μM (control), 50 μM, 100 μM, and 250 μM of CuSO4 for 6 days. Copper was taken up and accumulated in old roots but was not translocated to leaves. However in young leaves, the increase of lipid peroxidation and reduction of growth were evident from day 3 of copper exposure; whereas in old leaves, the lipid peroxidation and growth were the same from either copper-treated or control plants. In response to copper exposure, the betacyanin accumulation was evident in young leaves by day 3, and continued to increase until day 6. Betacyanin only were accumulated in old leaves until day 6, but the contents were from 4 to 5 times lower than those observed in young leaves at the same copper concentrations. GPOD activity increased 3.3- and 1.4-fold in young and old leaves from day 3 of copper treatment respectively, but only in the young leaves was sustained at the same level until day 6. Old roots shown betacyanin in the control plants, but the betacyanin level and growth were reduced with the copper exposure. In contrast, young roots emerged by copper effect also accumulated copper and showed the highest betacyanin content of all plant parts assayed. These results indicate that betacyanin accumulation and GPOD activity are defense responses to copper stress in actively growing organs.

Opis:
The rock mass disturbed by mining activities in a copper ore mine has a structure consisting of thick layers of predominantly high mechanical parameters. The layers, due to their strength properties and dimensions, have low deformability which influences a vast area in the form of increased stresses. This area is a part of a rock massif where dynamic destruction periodically occurs in particular fragments as the post-mining cavity expands. The size of such an identified fragment of the rock mass depends on the extent of goafs and the distance between them and mining operations as well as inhomogeneities and confinement in the rock massif. The specific structure of the overlying layers, especially their mechanical properties, determine, to a vast extent, the cracks of anthropogenic influence in the rock massif, which result in foci of seismic tremors often recorded far from the areas of conducted mining activities. A selection of seismic tremors for their spatial location, related to the conducted mining operations and the time of their occurrence, can be useful for forecasting areas which determine seismic hazards in the area of mining operations. The aspect of the analysis of seismic tremors recorded in Division G-23 may indicate the location of the areas of the rock mass which remains in a state of boundary energy balance until another portion of seismic energy is released ‘stabilizing’ the area containing this rock mass. The article presents results of the analysis of a set of tremors between 2013 and 2015, induced by mining activities in Division G-23, in order to forecast areas of seismic activity in the rock mass disturbed by mining operations.

Opis:
The Sudeten flora consists of some plants we can recognize as heavy metal accumulators. Between others there are: Thlaspi caerulescens, Arabidopsis halleri, Armeria maritima ssp. halleri s.l. and probably the endemic fern Asplenium onopteris var. silesiaca. The authors present the concentrations of some important heavy metals measured in aboveground plant dry weight. The highest concentration of zinc was 8220 ppm (Thlaspi), nickel - 3100 ppm (Thlaspi), lead - 83 ppm (Armeria), copper - 611 ppm (Arabidopsis) and cadmium - 28 ppm (Thlaspi). The concentrations depend rather on species or population specification than on ore deposit quality. There are no typical hyperaccumulator among plants we have examined, but some signs of hyperaccumulation of nickel, zinc and lead could be observed. There are no typical endemic taxa, only Asplenium onopteris var. silesiaca and Armeria maritima ssp. halleri may be recognized as neoendemic taxa, but still of unclear systematic position. During the study we tried to find out why some Sudeten vascular plants do not develop heavy metals hyperaccumulation and why they are rather latent hyperaccumulators. Finally, we suggest to protect some metallicolous areas in spite they are rather territories with low plant biodiversity.

Opis:
The study was designed to establish the pollution of the water and bottom sediments as well as the accumulation rates of selected metals (lead, cadmium, zinc, copper, nickel) in the bottom sediments of the pond in Szczytnicki Park in Wroclaw, Poland. Samples for the study were taken from eight locations on four occasions during a 12-month period: in spring (24 April 2008), summer (19 July 2008), autumn (18 November 2008), winter (10 February 2009). The following were determined for the water: temperature, reaction, total hardness and selected metals (Zn, Cu, Cd, Pb, Ni). For the bottom sediments the content and accumulation of the above metals were established. The accumulation rates of the studied metals in the bottom sediments were found to be arranged as follows: Ni > Cu > Zn > Pb > Cd, whereas metal concentrations in the bottom sediments were: Zn > Cu > Ni > Pb > Cd. Lead and cadmium had the lowest accumulation rates and contents in the bottom sediments. The water and bottom sediments covered by the study were found not to be polluted with metals.
Celem pracy była ocena stopnia zanieczyszczenia wody i osadów dennych oraz ocena stopnia kumulacji wybranych metali (ołów, kadm, cynk, miedź, nikiel) w osadach dennych stawu położonego w Parku Szczytnickim. Próbki do badań pobrano z 8 stanowisk, czterokrotnie podczas roku: wiosna (24 IV 2008), lato (19 VII 2008), jesień (18 XI 2008), zima (10 II 2009). W wodzie oznaczono: temperaturę, odczyn, twardość ogólną oraz stężenie metali (Zn, Cu, Cd, Pb, Ni). W osadach dennych analizowano zawartość oraz kumulacje powyżej podanych metali. Współczynniki kumulacji badanych metali w osadach dennych uszeregowane są w sposób następujący: Ni > Cu > Zn > Pb > Cd, natomiast szereg stężeń tych metali w osadzie dennym wygląda następująco: Zn > Cu > Ni > Pb > Cd. Najniższe współczynniki kumulacji i najniższą zawartość w osadzie dennym stwierdzono dla ołowiu i kadmu. Badana woda oraz osady denne należały do niezanieczyszczonych metalami.

Among a number of climate-related factors, moisture has the greatest impact on crop productivity. In recent years, certain changes have been observed under conditions of the Forest-Steppe of Ukraine with regard to precipitation – from low to in some cases – abnormally high, which requires the study of their impact on the yield and safety of cereal grain for its forecasted production. The article examined the effect of a high level of soil moisture (256.2–272.5 mm) and a low level (47.4–52.3 mm) during the growing season (germination→earing) of spring barley grain on the accumulation of heavy metals in it and its productivity under the conditions of gray forest soils of the Right Bank Forest Steppe of Ukraine. Spring barley varieties Helios and Caesar were selected for the research. A decrease in the accumulation coefficient at a high level of soil moisture (256.6–272.5 mm) in spring barley grain Pb from 8.3% to 11.3%, Cd – from 35.0% to 35.5%, Zn was established – by 15% and Cu – from 11.2% to 16.6% compared to the low level of soil moisture (47.1 mm – 53.3 mm). At the same time, it was found that with a high level of soil moisture, there is a decrease in the yield of Helios and Caesar spring barley by 18.0% and 14.1%, respectively.
