Objectives  of  the  research: The aim of the study was to explain various aspects of teachers’ well-being through their ability to use personal resources, such as strategies for coping with stress. Research  methods: The research survey was completed by 382 teachers from the Lublin Voivodeship. An original tool, the Teacher’s Well-Being Scale (TWS), with satisfactory psychometric properties, was used. Additionally, the Satisfaction with Life Scale (SWLS) and the Brief COPE Inventory were used. To explain the relationship between various dimensions of teachers’ well-being and coping strategies as an explanatory variable, a canonical analysis was carried out. A short description of the context of the issue: The role and profession of a teacher are associated with numerous stressors and difficult situations that may impact teachers’ well-being. Research findings: Teachers’ active approach to dealing with difficult and problematic situations and avoiding the strategy of denial promotes well-being related to the their work (especially in the dimensions of social relations and self-fulfillment). It is also important for life satisfaction in areas unrelated to the professional role of teachers. Coping strategies based on acceptance and seeking social support promote life satisfaction and professional well-being among teachers, who note satisfactory conditions at school for work and professional and personal development. Conclusions and/or recommendations: Research showing links between coping skills and the well-being of teachers and their students would be interesting. The current research results on teachers’ well-being explained by their self-efficacy and coping skills seem satisfactory. However, they do not correspond with the disturbingly limited research on student well-being, school satisfaction, and the results of teachers’ work.

Religiosity and dyadic coping are among the factors important for the quality of marriage, satisfaction with the relationship and the sense of happiness of the spouses. Well-being, mainly in the aspect of personal development or life goals, seems to be particularly important for couples planning to conceive a child in the near or distant future. The study involved 51 married couples postponing parenthood. Their dyadic coping, psychological well-being and the centrality of religiosity were studied. The actor-partner interdependence model was used for the dyadic analyses. There were no differences in the well-being between the spouses, however, women rated in dyadic coping and religiosity higher. The centrality of the spouses’ religiosity, and especially the congruence of their religious beliefs, seems to have a significant impact on their well-being. The obtained results seem to shed new light on the importance of dyadic coping by spouses and their religiosity for the well-being of each of them.

The study was conducted in Ukraine during the onset of COVID-19 pandemic. The sample contained 232 individuals. The aim was to study emotional experiences and their connection with coping strategies in the context of gender differences. The research was based on the concept of differential emotions, and on the understanding of the accumulation strategies as a dynamic process, which is determined by personal prepositions and situational factors. Measures used in the study were the Differential Emotions Scale and the Ways of Coping Questionnaire. The growth of negative experiences and stress at the beginning of the pandemic among men and women was confirmed. We described the differences regarding emotions and coping strategies. Women use emotion-focused strategies of social support, strategies of positive reappraisal of the situation, and avoidance, the acceptance of responsibility among women is associated with negative emotions. We found that women more frequently use two or more coping strategies compared to men. A different emotional basis of coping strategies, expressed at high levels of tension among men and women, was revealed. The defined features of coping behavior among men and women may help to determine the main goals for the development of preventive and psychotherapeutic interventions.

Mobbing behaviours at workplaces and occupational burnout have negative impacts on the working and private lives. Mobbing, irrespective of its intensity, represents one of the most significant stressors and often leads to an irreversible psycho-deterioration of an individual. Overcoming a stressful situation at work requires specifying the methods for coping with stress resulting in job burnout. Job burnout is a complex syndrome of emotional exhaustion, depersonalization and reduced personal accomplishment. The aim of these study was to analyze interrelationships between mobbing, coping with stress and job burnout among nurses. The study included 86 nurses of various specialties, who gave their consent to participate in the project, were examined. The average age of the nurses was 37.7 years, and the average job seniority was 12.6 years. The study were conducted in 2019-2020 in hospitals of Southern Poland. and was based on the following instruments: Sociodemographic survey, The Negative Acts Questionnaire (NAQ), COPE Inventory and Maslach Burnout Inventory (MBI). The presented studies showed a statistically significant and consistent relationship between the intensity of perceived mobbing in nurses and the results obtained on the scale of emotional exhaustion and depersonalization. A relationship was found between the preference for some specific stress management strategies and job burnout level, also after adjustment for the mobbing intensity, age and seniority of the respondents, thus empirically confirming a multifaceted nature of the unfavorable phenomena related to the work of a nurse. It was found that there is interrelationships between mobbing, coping with stress and job burnout among nurses.

The Russian invasion of Ukraine on February 24, 2022 shattered Western illusions of peace and security, raining tensions on both a macro and micro level. This article was thus inspired by how the war had affected Philology students in Poland, specifically emphasising the city of Rzeszow, which lies close to the Ukrainian border. The aim assigned to the research project was to investigate levels of resilience among students and how this correlates with stress levels and to further investigate the potential coping strategies adopted by the students to mitigate their anxiety levels. What has been shown is that there is a correlation between the proximity of students to graduation and the levels of anxiety they felt about their future employment prospects and that the most common method for coping with stress was to become actively involved in assisting in the most immediate manifestation of the cause of the stress, in this case assisting refugees.

This study aimed to investigate the relationship of academic procrastination to coping strategies with test anxiety and to explore whether there are significant differences in using these strategies between procrastinators and non-procrastinators. The study sample comprised 455 high school students (mean age was 17.04 years). Two scales were used one for measuring academic procrastination and the other for measuring coping strategies with test anxiety. The scale of coping strategies is composed of four subscales: Danger control (e.g., using time effectively), anxiety control (e.g., relaxation), anxiety repression (e.g., denial of a situation that produces test anxiety), and situation control (e.g., cheating). Data were analysed using Pearson product-moment correlation coefficients, median-split method and t-tests. Results revealed that academic procrastination correlated positively and significantly with anxiety repression and situation control, and correlated negatively and significantly with anxiety and danger control. In addition, the results showed that anxiety repression was the most common strategy used by procrastinators, while anxiety danger was the most common strategy used by non-procrastinators. Significant differences were found between procrastinators and non-procrastinators in using coping strategies, where procrastinators used more strategies of anxiety repression and situation control, whereas non-procrastinators used more strategies of danger control and anxiety control.

Opis:
With the advent of the COVID pandemic and associated stressors, there is an increased need for strategies to support mental health, stress management, and coping skills.1 The biopsychosocial benefits of human-Animal interaction have been identified as a protective factor for mental health and stress during the pandemic.2 Through incorporating intentional interactions with companion animals in the use of three widely recognized evidence-based coping skills—grounding, relating, and reframing—the GRR Method is delineated as a coping strategy. The GRR Method is not an evidenced-based practice or tested intervention, rather, it is a proposed application strategy for existing evidence-based coping skills through partnership and purposeful interaction with companion animals. Within this article, the human stress response is briefly reviewed to provide a framework in which to situate use of grounding, relating and reframing skills augmented by companion animal interaction. The GRR Method is presented and explicated as a One Health strategy that can benefit both people and animals; issues of animal welfare, consent, and enrichment are explicitly addressed.

Aim. Problems are inevitable in the subtleties of organizational communication, but it does not mean confronting them is uncontrollable. This paper aims to offer a conceptual structure for investigating contingency theory in Public Relations (PR) during an organizational crisis. The research investigates PR practitioners’ use of advocacy and accommodation in contingency theory to intervene in crisis communication. It also offers insights into the public’s emotional response and coping mechanisms during a crisis, as well as how understanding these emotions (such as anger, anxiety, fear, and grief, among others) could aid PR professionals in developing more effective crisis communication methods. Method. Empirical research was conducted on the basis of literature reviews by observing and analyzing the existing literature on contingency theory, crisis communication in organizations, and public emotions. Results. This conceptual paper proposes and empirically tests a few propositions. The implications for future studies are included in the paper. Findings promote the adopting a dual-continuum strategy that might assist public relations professionals in preferring superior crisis management strategies for obtaining desired organizational outcomes. Conclusion. The authors assert that PR professionals must move from embracing Grunig’s four models of excellence to contingency theory for communicating strategically with the public. The authors propose to adopt a dual-continuum approach that varies from advocacy to accommodation and might provide practical guidance to choose a better stance adopted by the organization towards the public during a crisis. The negative emotions of the public influenced by a crisis along with their emotional coping approaches are also discussed.

Aim. The empirical study of gender differences in the dispositional mental states of university teachers who were internally displaced during martial law. Methods. A combined research strategy was used, integrating the methods for comparing samples of female and male participants. The different types of dispositional mental states of the respondents were identified by the author’s methodology for the study of dominant mental states. Results. It was discovered that the respondents’ psychological content parameters showed statistically significant gender-based differences. Group 1 prevailed in terms of anxiety (U = 855.0; p = .000). Group 2 prevailed in terms of self-control (U = 975.0; p = .001); awareness of events (U = 707.5; p = .000); expected attitude (U = 1074.0; p = .006); expected result (U = 1067.0; p = .006) and psychological well-being (U = 1113.5; p = .014). The dispositional mental states of a female sample of internally displaced university teachers were represented by five components with a total variation of ∑d = 74.527%. The male sample had four factors with a total variation ∑d = 94.442%. It was stated that there were significant differences between the dispositional mental states of female and male teachers in terms of formal characteristics and content loading of components. Conclusions. The scientific value of empirical facts about the dispositional mental states of university teachers who were internally displaced as a result of wartime action is justified. The importance of incorporating the discovered results into scientific and educational processes is emphasised.

Background Professionals working with trauma victims can experience both negative and positive effects following exposure to secondary trauma. The aim of the study was to determine the relationship between secondary traumatic stress (STS), secondary posttraumatic growth (SPTG) and cognitive coping strategies and to establish the mediating role of cognitive coping strategies in the relationship between STS and SPTG. Material and Methods A group of 500 professionals working with trauma survivors were surveyed. The Secondary Traumatic Stress Inventory, the Secondary Posttraumatic Growth Inventory and the Cognitive Processing of Trauma Scale was used. Results The results indicated that 29% of professionals demonstrate a high intensity of STS, and nearly 34% exhibit a high level of SPTG. Denial and regret were positively correlated with STS; positive cognitive restructuring, resolution/acceptance and downward comparison were positively related to SPTG. Two cognitive coping strategies, i.e., positive cognitive restructuring and downward comparison, were found to act as mediators in the relationship between STS and SPTG. Conclusions Understanding the effects of secondary exposure to trauma and the coping responses of professionals working with trauma survivors will support the development of prevention and intervention actions aimed at protecting them from the deleterious impact of exposure to secondary trauma at work and promoting secondary posttraumatic growth.

Cel. Celem badań była ocena postrzeganych postaw rodzicielskich w generowaniu destruktywnej (agresja, unik, uległość) i konstruktywnej (zadaniowej) strategii radzenia sobie młodzieży w sytuacji konfliktu społecznego. Materiały i metody. W badaniach posłużono się Skalą Postaw Rodzicielskich (SPR) Mieczysława Plopy i Kwestionariuszem do badania strategii radzenia sobie młodzieży w sytuacji konfliktu społecznego (KSMK) Danuty Boreckiej-Biernat. Badania empiryczne objęły 893 osoby (468 dziewcząt i 425 chłopców) w wieku 13–15 lat. Wyniki. Ponadto analiza materiału badawczego wskazała, że prawidłowe postawy rodzicielskie, przepełnione ciepłem uczuciowym, akceptacją i wsparciem, uznaniem swobody do aktywności z jednoczesnym uszanowaniem indywidualności wyposażają dorastające dziecko w strategię konstruktywną (zadaniową), skuteczną w przezwyciężaniu sytuacji konfliktu społecznego. Wydaje się, że uzyskane informacje mogą być wskazówkami teoretycznymi w opracowaniu strategii wychowawczych mających na celu ukształtowanie jednostki radzącej sobie z konfliktem w sposób dojrzały.
Aim. The goal of the study was to assess the perceived parental attitudes in generating destructive (aggression, avoidance, submission) and constructive (task-oriented) coping strategies in young people in situations of social conflict. Materials and methods. The Parental Attitudes Scale (SPR) by Mieczysław Plopa and the Questionnaire of Coping Strategies in Youth in Situations of Social Conflict (KSMK) by Danuta Borecka-Biernat were used in the study. The empirical study was conducted on a sample of 893 participants (468 girls and 425 boys) aged 13 to 15. Results. In the light of the conducted study, it has been concluded that the destructive (aggressive, avoidant, submissive) coping mechanism in adolescents who experience emotional tension in situations of social conflict is shaped by inappropriate parental attitudes, characterized by emotional distance or emotional focus of the parents on the adolescent child, lack of a balanced emotional bond, as well as high expectations combined with excessive discipline and strictness. Moreover, an analysis of the research material has indicated that appropriate parental attitudes, characterized by emotional warmth, acceptance, support, allowing the child to choose the activities they engage in, and respecting their individuality facilitate the development of the constructive (task-oriented) strategy in the adolescent, which allows the young person to overcome social conflicts. It appears that the obtained information constitutes a theoretical basis for guidelines for parental and educational strategies that will allow the shaping of individuals able to cope with conflict in a mature way.

Opis:
Purpose – Self-employment is considered one of the responses to precarious employment, particularly among those who lost jobs during an economic crisis. Although starting a new business is widely available, operating new ventures remains challenging. This article aims to explore the premises of self-employment success, namely self-employment intention and proactive coping as crucial predictors of further performance. Design/methodology/approach – The authors recruited participants among initially unemployed individuals who participated in the entrepreneurial program aimed at creating self-employment. Since entrepreneurs are expected to have specific personal characteristics important for performance, the authors assessed proactive coping as the key factor for self-employment intention. Findings – The results depicted proactive coping as crucial in performing own ventures in the long run, which suggests that self-employment intention may change over time. Practical implications – Proactive coping is particularly appropriate for self-employed at any stage of the entrepreneurial process because it maintains the intention to perform own business. Thus, the findings underline the need for proactive coping training for entrepreneurs, particularly those previously unemployed. Originality/value – As the self-employment intention may differ in time, the importance of being proactive in operating small businesses increases.

The relationship between students’ attitudes towards the situation of returning to full-time teaching and selected psychosocial conditions such as rumination-reflection, ego resilience, ways of coping with stress and personality dimensions were analyzed. Both groups of respondents differ in terms of their psychological resources, although differently than originally assumed. It turned out that students who want to return to face-to-face learning, and for whom this situation is not an overwhelming problem, do not have better psychosocial characteristics than students who prefer distance learning. The conclusions of this study may help us understand a certain aspect of students’ mental well-being, a different relationship with the environment than before, and the kind of education that we have not yet experienced.
