The article is devoted to the history of transformation and re-arrangement of the first from the West chapel on the South side of the Gothic parish church of the Old Town in Toruń, at present the Toruń Cathedral of St John the Baptist and St John the Evangelist. The former merchants’ chapel dedicated to St Nicholas over its history had changed its furnishing and patrocinium twice (St Michael the Archangel/ The Guardian Angels), which had been dictated by religious needs. In the 19th century it had also assumed the function of baptismal chapel and in 1973 – the Copernicus Jubilee Year – gained an entirely new arrangement to suit the memoria of the astronomer, who was born in this town. From than on it is universally referred to “The Copernicus Chapel”. The Authors analyse the historic grounds for that commemoration (the Copernicus memorabilia collected in that interior), the principles of its new arrangement with the use of Medieval elements of the church furnishing, the elements of historic and emotional narrative as well as the contemporary implications of that creation.

The eminent French historian Fernand Barudel pointed out in his works about the Med that one would need for understanding of activites of an individual a wide context created by the social space and environment in which the main hero tends to live in. For Braudel became Philippe 2nd only a pretence to analyse the whole civilisation of the Med in his times. This context can be employed on the man of letters, a loner, spending the most of his life in his astronomical observatory – Nicolaus Copernicus. Unquestionably, the social environment of Thorn exerted the biggest influence on the formation of the young Copernicus. The city was located on the lower Vistula, on the boarder of the state of Teutonic Knights and Poland, with strong relationships with Silesia, Cracow and Hansa and over Hansa with Northern Europe. This location created extraordinary circumstances for the formation of the one of the biggest intellects of his times. This cultural mosaic was the native environment of Nicolaus Copernicus, a German-speaking Pole, on the maternal side a descendant of immigrants from Westphalia, on the paternal side of Silesian Copernicus-family with Slavic roots, from his birth to his death the faithful subject of the Polish kings.

W artykule przedstawiono porównanie wyników modeli obliczeniowych Programu Copernicus z danymi publikowanymi przez Główny Inspektorat Ochrony Środowiska, dotyczącymi stężeń pyłów zawieszonych PM10 dla terenu Polski w roku 2015, zarówno w okresie letnim, jak i zimowym. Opisano Program Copernicus oraz zaprezentowano podstawowe modele obliczeniowe, stosowane w analizie zanieczyszczeń powietrza atmosferycznego, które wykorzystują dane satelitarne dostarczane przez serwisy tego Programu. Przedstawiono teoretyczne zagadnienia dotyczące pyłów zawieszonych PM10 i ich udziału w zanieczyszczeniu powietrza atmosferycznego oraz zaprezentowano konkretne dane liczbowe dotyczące tematu opracowania.
The comparison of the Copernicus Programme Services data with the data published by the Chief Inspectorate for Environmental Protection on the concentration of particulate matters PM10 in Poland in 2015, both in summer and winter period, was presented. Program Copernicus was described and main calculation models for air pollution analysis based on Copernicus services satellite data were explained. The environmental aspects of PM10 and theirs impact on air pollution were presented as well as the figures related to the topic of this paper.

The term morphogenetic field, in a corrupted meaning, is frequently used in the contemporary pseudoscience (see T. Witkowski, „Nauka” 4/2007, p. 149-157). In fact the term in question first appeared in the early twentieth century among the students of embryological development. In 1920s and 1930s it was considered an important concept and frequently used. Later, the concept of the morphogenetic field was eclipsed and ignored. In recent years with the emerging of evolutionary developmental biology, the field concept was restored as an important paradigm of embryology. Unfortunately, the term morphogenetic field is nowadays mostly known in a distorted meaning, introduced by R. Sheldrake. It seems that the famous Copernicus law, saying that the bad coin will drive the better one out of the circulation, reigns in the realm of scientific terminology.

The author analyses Copernicus’s ideas described in De revolutionibus orbium coelestium (1543) and the different view of the universe put forward by the excellent Danish astronomer Tycho Brahe (1546–1601). Elias Olsen Morsing (1550–1590), a collaborator of Tycho Brahe, was sent to Frombork (Frauenburg) in 1584 to take the same measurements as Copernicus, but with his own, much better, instruments. The idea was to compare the new measurements with those taken by Copernicus. The expedition was a success. Morsing was able to detect certain errors in Copernicus’s measurements, and the scope of these errors. While in Frombork, Morsing received a primitive astronomical instrument and a portrait of Copernicus as gifts from canon Jan Hannovius. The author of this paper notes the Catholic Church’s scepticism about Copernicus’s theory of the universe, while acknowledging that both Copernicus and Brahe had deep faith in God and shared the belief that they owed their learning and achievement to God.

The UNESCO proclaimed the year 1973 as Copernicus Year. Polish immigrants in Denmark, who left the Polish People’s Republic between 1969–1973, with the encouragement of the Editor-in-chief of the newspaper „Chronicle” in Copenhagen, took the initiative to celebrate the great jubilee and arranged a symposium. The main paper, by Professor Leon Koczy (Glasgow), was about Copernicus and the excellent Danish astronomer Tycho Brahe. Participants of the symposium also had the opportunity to listen to five other papers and to take part in a long discussion. The second day of the symposium was dedicated to Polish and international music – a mass was celebrated in memory of Polish scientists and artists who had perished or been killed, followed by a classical music concert performed by immigrant master-musicians. The jubilee celebration in Denmark was under the patronage of Edward Raczyński, Polish ambassador to the UK and one of the Polish political leaders in exile. For the new immigration this was the first great step in their new life, because the symposium was in support of WWII combatant emigration and the President of the Polish Republic in exile.

The article is devoted to the presentation of the Nicolaus Copernicus’ House, a branch of the District Museum in Toruń, in the context of its historical, communication and mar- keting values. The above considerations regarding, in particular, 2023, the 550th anniversary of the birthday of Nicolaus Copernicus, which was celebrated grandly throughout the country especially in cities associated with Copernicus, including Toruń. The text presents a wide range of activities related to the Nicolaus Copernicus House and the astronomer himself on many levels, including exhibition, event, educational, marketing and communication. These descriptions were supported by the results of attendance and tourist traffic surveys, which clearly show the potential of this place and the public’s interest in it.
Artykuł poświęcony został prezentacji Domu Mikołaja Kopernika, oddziału Muzeum Okręgowego w Toruniu, w kontekście jego walorów historycznych, komunikacyjnych i marketingowych. Powyższe rozważania dot. w szczególności roku 2023, czyli roku jubileuszowego 550. urodzin Mikołaja Kopernika, który to obchodzony był hucznie w całym kraju, a w sposób szczególny w miastach z Kopernikiem związanych, w tym oczywiście w Toruniu. W tekście zaprezentowany został szeroki wachlarz działań związanych z Domem Mikołaja Kopernika i samym astronomem na wielu płaszczyznach m.in. wystawienniczej, eventowej, edukacyjnej, marketingowej i komunikacyjnej. Opisy te zostały poparte wynikami badań frekwencyjnych i ruchu turystycznego, które w czytelny sposób pokazują potencjał tego miejsca i zainteresowanie nim publiczności.

The aim of the article is to discuss the significance of historical anniversaries in the period of People’s Poland by comparing the celebrations of the Year of Copernicus in 1953 and 1973. First, the focus is placed on the institutional analysis of the celebrations and the characteristics of their main participants. Then, the discursive mechanisms of attributing significance to the figure of Nicolaus Copernicus are presented, with a particular emphasis on the value of progressiveness, revolution, anticlericalism. Finally, the author makes an attempt to evaluate the effects of commemoration policy in the Polish society.

This article is a summary of the author's research into the background, social environment and other elements of Nicolaus Copernicus' biography. The author draws attention to the genesis of the dispute over the astronomer's “nationality” and emphasises his nineteenth-century origins. The author points to the influ- ence of the partitions of Poland on the one hand, and the rise of German nationa- lism on the other, as the main reasons for its emergence. He emphasises the fact of Copernicus' loyalty to the Polish king and, consequently, Copernicus' histo- rically understood “Polishness”. The author discusses the history of the astrono- mer's home town - Toruń, its economic and political role in the 13–16th centuries and, in particular, the commercial confederation linking the city and its merchants with Western and Northern Europe, the lands of the Polish Kingdom, Upper Hungary (today's Slovakia) and Silesia. These links indicate the causes and directions of merchant migration that led to the appearance of the Copernicus family in Toruń. The author put forward a thesis on the Westphalian origin of the family of Nicolaus Copernicus' mother, Watzenrode. The family came from the village of Wazerath (in the 15th century Watzenrode), situated near the German- Belgian border. The Watzenrode family arrived in Toruń in the first half of the Mikołaj Kopernik wciąż tajemniczy? 89 14th century together with a wave of migrants from Westphalian towns with Soest and Dortmund at the head. Of the 8 great-grandmothers of Copernicus, 6 came from families directly descended from Westphalia, one from Ruthenia, and one from Livonia. The Watzenrode family belonged to the elite of Toruń's patri- cians - three of its members were local councillors and three jurors, and five of its representatives went on to study at university. There was a tradition in the fa- mily of striving to achieve high social prestige through a clerical career for its members, taken from John Abezier, and continued by the astronomer's uncle, Łukasz Watzenrode, both bishops of Warmia. The astronomer's father's family came from Silesia, not from the village of Koperniki, but from the town of Nysa. The surname “Copernicus” had a professional character, being connected with the mining or processing of copper. In Nysa the Koperniks were recorded in the bench book under the name “Kopersmed”, which was a translation of their Slavic surname into the official language of the books – German. Considered in earlier literature to be the astronomer's grandfather, John Copernicus was probably his father Andrew's cousin. However, he played a significant role in the life of the astronomer's family. It was probably thanks to Jan Nicolaus Copernicus that his father went from Nysa to Cracow for a merchant apprenticeship to Jan Sweid- niczer, and later, thanks to the relationship with this merchant, he went to Prussia and settled in Toruń. Nicolaus Copernicus was not the youngest child in his family. This misconception was caused by the order in which the children of Nicolaus and Barbara Copernicus were listed in a genealogical table prepared by the Gdańsk writer Stanisław Bornbach. Earlier biographers of Copernicus con- sidered this order to be chronological, whereas it was alphabetical. In contem- porary sources Nicolaus appears twice before his brother Andrew (never in re- verse order), which is sufficient evidence for the recognition of his seniority in relation to his brother. The astronomer was born in Toruń, but not in the tene- ment house at 15 Kopernik Street, where today there is a part of the museum devoted to him. This house belonged to the astronomer's family in the years 1458–1480, but probably already in 1468 they moved to the tenement house at 36 Rynek Staromiejski, half of which belonged to the Watzenrode family already at the end of the 14th century, and the other half was bought by the astronomer's father in 1468. Anna Schilling, hailed in literature as the “lady of the heart” of the astronomer approaching the end of his days, was most probably his cousin from Gdańsk. She was the daughter of Nicolaus Copernicus' cousin. She lived in From- bork as a widow, rather as a carer of her elderly and probably already ailing cou- sin. The question of Copernicus' place of rest in Frombork Cathedral is still open. The identification of his remains still raises some doubts among researchers, especially anthropologists and geneticists. Despite these reservations, the author concludes that our knowledge of Nicolaus Copernicus' background, youth and private life on the eve of his 550th birthday is much greater than it was even several decades after his death and only a few years ago

The Copernicus constructed by Thomas S. Kuhn in The Copernican Revolution (1957) is a decidedly non-revolutionary astronomer who unwittingly ignited a conceptual revolution in the European worldview. Kuhn’s reading of Copernicus was crucial for his model of science as a deeply conservative discourse, which presented in The Structure of Scientific Revolutions (1962). This essay argues that Kuhn’s construction of Copernicus and depends on the suppression of the most radical aspects of Copernicus’ thinking, such as the assumptions of the Commentariolus (1509-14) and the conception of hypothesis of De Revolutionibus (1543). After comparing hypothetical thinking in the writings of Aristotle and Ptolemy, it is suggested that Copernicus’ conceptual breakthrough was enabled by his rigorous use of hypothetical thinking.

The article discusses various inspirations in the philosophy of Copernicus. According to the author of the text, scholastic views were of key importance in the reflections of the Polish astronomer. In addition, there are influences of the open Christian Aristotelism and also refrences to Platonism. Basically, the scholar belongs to the philosophy of the late Middle Ages as he referred to the thought of John Buridan, Wojciech Brudzewski and other Polish and Western scholastic authors. To sum up, the conducted research shows that in a general sense Nicolaus Copernicus may be classified as a well- educated scholastic master and medieval philosopher, an open thinker of the Late Middle Ages. More detailed study on various influences and inspirations adopted in his reflection results in the following approximate summary: Copernicus’ philosophy is medieval in its three quarters and Renaissanse in one quarter. Hence, three quarters are scholastic and traditional while one quarter is innovative. Innovation-novelty- was decisive for meaning and gradual success of the work of the Polish astronomer, however, it was tradition that enabled this novelty and paved the way to the new vision of the world. Physics of Copernicus is a modified Aristotelism and rules of the order and hierarchy are classified as Christian Platonism and Pythagoreism.

This paper presents the real sense of the classical and quantum theory of gravitation as a component of the actual picture of the universe where the volume, as the size of the expanding universe, approaches infinity, while the total of material masses goes to zero. At present, these two standard theories describe the phenomenon of gravitation but do not explain the very mechanism and the cause of this process. This constant and real lack of information on that subject is consistent with natural laws and the same with the laws of physics, which were already experimentally determined by Werner Heisenberg in 1927. The paper also presents the causes of inability to explain up to the present the actual picture of the essence of the universe.
