In the long run, prestige does play an important role in building a university's brand from the point of view of both management and students, alumni in particular. Prestige is built by the academic staff, programmes of studies, and the learning conditions, to name the most important factors. A programme of studies is a distinctive element that sets a university apart from the competition, and by doing so decides about its competitive advantage. In the context of higher education marketing, it is also important to remember about the already mentioned process of adjusting programmes of studies to the labour market requirements.

Opis:
While writing this article, the author was inspired by “Między chwilą a pięknem. O sztuce w rozpędzonym świecie” by Zygmunt Bauman. Following Baumanian diagnosis of the contemporary art we are faced with the condition of our contemporary world. The main feature we can observe in both areas seems to be their ‘liquidity’. In this liquid context the author of the article focuses on contemporary architecture, which was omitted by Zygmunt Bauman. It appears that the most fixed, palpable and sturdy type of art also may assume a kind of liquid form – as in the case of so called ‘folding’, ‘downy’, or ‘pleated’ architecture proposed by Bernard Tschumi or Peter Eisenman who are strongly inspired by philosophical thoughts of Friedrich Nietzsche, Gilles Deleuze, or Jacques Derrida.

The Philosophical and Social Yearbook Civitas Hominibus of 2013 highlights the diversity of the modern world. It includes articles dealing with culture, religion, politics, ideology amongst others. Current changes have varied characteristics requiring the identification of their qualitative and quantitative dynamics. Analysis of these changes is undertaken in various disciplines on an international scale through extensive research and constant observation. Analysis and evaluation is provided here by experts and specialists in the study of international relations and other academic disciplines, by politicians, journalists and representatives of various social organizations.

For millennia, philosophers have pondered the question, “Who are we?” It becomes a burning question at an age of scientific and technological civilization and a world full of conveniences, mainly because human life is still not comfortable. Adam Hart takes up the challenge of confronting the evolutionary achievements of the Homo species and the environment it has produced, showing that our life—for fundamental reasons—cannot be the realization of idyllic visions.

In the contemporary world we can not imagine a form of human existence other than one where we live with objects that we have to domesticate, in a sense, in order to adapt them to our individual needs. Even in the general acceleration and prevailing nature of the consumer lifestyle, consumer behaviour does not confine itself to one trend (e.g., buying new items and throwing out old ones that are still good), but assumes different forms. The author differentiates three tendencies of consumption. In one, individuals want to acquire a certain item and later to get rid of it (continual buying), in the second, they wish to possess something and treat it almost ceremoniously (collecting), while in the third, there is a great desire to find value in an object in order to reuse it in a completely different manner (redefinition). Contemporary consumers can thus search for items that have their own unique history. This tendency is confirmed by the quantity of second-hand-type shops and cluttered basements.

This article concerns uncertainty, which is considered by many social theorists (for instance, Zygmunt Bauman, Ulrich Beck, Daniel Bell, Eric Hobsbawm) to be a characteristic trait of the contemporary world. Uncertainty is produced by rapid, multidimensional changes in the conditions around us—by their instability and unpredictability—and by a lack of future vision. Continual change becomes an element of everyday life. Culture understood as a collection of permanent meanings, norms, and values loses its ordering function—it no longer serves to elucidate the world; the past does not provide helpful examples. There is an expansion of mutability, a multiplicity of possible choices, and an excess of information—which paradoxically, like its lack in an isolated society, is a cause of uncertainty, fear, and presentist thinking. In Polish society, these phenomena are strengthened by tradition and the sense of economic insecurity accompanying the systemic transformation.

Marka jest synonimem sukcesu firmy. Jednocześnie stanowi najlepsze świadectwo jakości pracy (lub wyrobu) danej firmy np. samochodowej, spożywczej czy też edukacyjnej. Do pojęcia marki można odnieść się w sposób dwojaki: „W wąskim rozumieniu terminu marka podkreśla głównie jej elementy (nazwę, znak graficzny, symbole, a także ich kombinacje), których zadaniem jest zidentyfikowanie oferty danego podmiotu oraz jej wyróżnienie na tle ofert konkurencyjnych. Jeśli marka zaistnieje w świadomości nabywcy, co oznacza zdobycie pewnej wiedzy o niej oraz wytworzenie się u nabywcy pozytywnego nastawienia do marki, wówczas jego sposób reagowania staje się odmienny od zachowania wobec podobnego produktu (usługi), lecz tej marki pozbawionego". Istotą marki jest zafunkcjonowanie produktu lub usługi w podświadomości klienta. To sprawia, że klient odnosi się do zakupu produktu lub usługi w sposób emocjonalny, niejednokrotnie nie zwracając uwagi na cenę. Dla klienta marka jest synonimem luksusu, podkreślenia osiągnięcia pewnego statusu ekonomicznego, kluczem do zaistnienia w określonym kręgu społecznym. Z punktu widzenia marketingowego klient kupujący produkt posiadający markę staje się narzędziem marketingowym, wzmacniającym reklamę produktu, czy też usługi. Zwiększa grupę ludzi wypowiadających się pozytywnie o produkcie (usłudze). Wypracowanie marki - bez względu na rodzaj działalności firmy - następuje w wyniku długotrwałego procesu wspartego silnym marketingiem. Obecnie w każdym obszarze gałęzi gospodarczej, a także edukacyjnej funkcjonują firmy, które wypracowały markę np. w branży samochodowej Rolls Royce, Jaguar, w branży spożywczej Mc Donalds, Coca Cola, w branży edukacyjnej uniwersytety: Harvard, Cambridge.

This article starts with an analysis of sensitivity, which is a two-sided trait. We value and admire sensitive people, but we may also consider them to be weak individuals, unable to cope. An overly intense reception of the world can sometimes lead to alienation. In today’s computerized, rationalized world, where efficiency matters above all, feelings can be a burden; reflection postpones immediate success. However, academic knowledge and artistic creativity require sensitivity to the world and the individualization of thinking and feeling. In considering philosophical ideas and the findings of researchers of the human mind, the author demonstrates that sharpened sensitivity and being different are essential traits of the creative attitude, while their lack testifies to a society’s regression.

In the popular works of charismatic scientists you can find messages which presentscientific code as the only appropriate way of speaking about reality. However,the history of science shows that strongly optimistic opinions about therole of the elements of the scientific system in the process of overcoming all theproblems of humanity are not a new phenomenon. From the psychological pointof view, it is interesting to identify the conditions of shaping of attitudes towardsscience among people who meet popular scientific information every day.In the article some results of works on psychological tool designed to examinemany aspects of strongly scientistic worldview described as “scientotheism”were presented. During researches on the sample of 508 adult Poles, from theprimary set of questionnaire items we selected these which were characterizedby the highest level of accordance of examined people’s attitudes. Because ofthe high level of agreement/disagreement, answers connected with these itemscan be perceived as a sample survey of common convictions about the role ofthe elements of scientific system in the contemporary world.Analysis of collected data shown that examined people perceived scientific researchas rather useful activity which brought the real increase of knowledge about world, gave them tools to cope with common problems and had positiveinfluence on everyday life. On the other hand, common convictions of the examinedpeople were that there were phenomena which cannot be scientificallyexplained and that forecasts which said that we would achieve the full knowledgeabout the world could not be serious. Furthermore, respondents frequentlythought that science could only partially reduce common fears. Commonlythey contested also the statement that science could erase conflicts which occurredamong people.

This essay contains reflections on the role of war in European history and on contemporary Europeans’ awareness of the wars currently underway. In the historical part of the text, the author refers to the classic justification of the creation of a state as an alternative to war. The author recalls the conflicts and destruction in Europe to the end of the nineteenth century – an era in which war theoreticians and national leaders treated war as an acceptable tool for obtaining political aims. Then the author presents the world wars of the twentieth century as a threat to the existence of Europe and the process of building – in this century and with the large participation of Europeans – an international system to prevent conflicts. In the part referring to contemporary times, the author claims that in Europe wars are perceived almost exclusively as “local” conflicts, occurring far from European borders. Europeans are little aware of the fact that the sources of the wars in the Middle East and Africa are today global in nature and could affect Europeans themselves. The reluctance to admit these facts appears to be greatest in Poland and its neighboring countries in East Central Europe, where the attention of governments, public opinion, and even academics, is focused on the region’s twentieth-century wars.

Artykuł przedstawia zagadnienie misji osób konsekrowanych we współczesnym świecie na podstawie nauczania Franciszka. Według papieża apostolstwo osób poświęconych Bogu na własność nie jest pozbawione niepewności i trudności, wynikających przede wszystkim z obecnej kondycji życia konsekrowanego. Franciszek powierza osobom konsekrowanym misję przebudzenia świata. Jego zdaniem cechą charakteryzującą życie konsekrowane jest proroctwo. Istota misji osób konsekrowanych jest wyznaczona przez Ewangelię. Są one wezwane, by nieść i przekazywać wszystkim pocieszenie samego Boga oraz nadzieję. Mają być prawdziwymi matkami i ojcami duchowymi oraz budować kulturę spotkania.
This article presents the issue of the mission of consecrated persons in the contemporary world according to the teaching of Francis. According to the Pope, the apostolate of those consecrated to God is not without its uncertainties and difficulties, which arise, above all, from the current condition of consecrated life. Francis has entrusted consecrated persons with the mission of awakening the world. In his view, the defining characteristic of the consecrated life is prophecy. The essence of the mission of consecrated persons is determined by the Gospel. They are called to bring and communicate to all the consolation of God Himself as well as hope. They are to be true spiritual mothers and fathers and to build a culture of encounter.

To przepajanie duchem Ewangelii wszystkich wydarzeń i dziedzin rzeczywistości stanowi właściwą specyfikę apostolstwa. Do chrześcijan należy świadczenie o tym, jak wiara chrześcijańska daje jedyną pełną odpowiedź na problemy i nadzieje, jakie życie stawia przed każdym człowiekiem i każdym społeczeństwem. Chrześcijanie muszą stawać się dla świata czytelnymi znakami innej rzeczywistości, rzeczywistości Bożego królestwa. W niniejszym artykule podjęto próbę wskazania pedagogiczno-katechetycznych aspektów dostrzegania, właściwego rozumienia i podejmowania przez chrześcijan znaków czasu we współczesnym świecie. Chrześcijanie realizują przez to zadanie consecratio mundi i dzięki temu mogą iść naprzód z nadzieją. Zostało to omówione przez uświadomienie faktu, że chrześcijanin nie ucieka, lecz żyje we współczesnym świecie, dla którego stara się być świadkiem królestwa Bożego oraz ukazuje mu drogę Ewangelii.
