    The author, discussing the paradigm of sustainable development, refers it to the specificity of a small town. As a consequence, comparing distinctive factors influencing the development of a small town in a spirit of sustainable development, attempts to build a model of such a city, offering a tool for its controlling and monitoring in the form of a set of criteria. The article also attempts to answer two fundamental questions: first – what is the meaning of sustainable development, second – how the sustainable development of a small town differs from a broad sense of big city sustainable development?

    Zniszczenia II wojny światowej powodowały zarówno w naszym kraju, jak i w krajach Zachodu konieczność naprawiania historycznych układów i budynków zabytkowych. W ciągu przeszło siedemdziesięciu lat działania były różne. Niekiedym przyjmując niestety modernistyczną estetykę, niszczono historyczną urbanistykę śródmieść. Obserwowane od kilkunastu już lat działania w miastach niemieckich dają nadzieję, że wszystko można odtworzyć i zrekonstruować. Ale czy współcześnie należy tak działać? Trudno określić, która droga jest właściwa. Dyskusje w środowiskach profesjonalnych trwają.
    Because of the ravages of World War II, both in Poland and western countries, it was necessary to repair the historic complexes and individual buildings. In the course of over seventy years various treatments were applied. Sometimes, unfortunately, approving of the modernist aesthetics resulted in destroying the historic urban layouts in town centres. The activity in German towns, observed for several years, allow for hoping that everything can be recreated and reconstructed. But is that the right thing to do nowadays? It is difficult to decide which way is correct. Discussions in professional circles are still going on.

    The author discusses the relationship between art and the body, as exemplified by the similarities and differences in the works of: two Japanese artists, Matsui Chie (b. 1960) and Higashikage Tomohiro (b. 1978); and the Polish artist, Mirosław Bałka (b. 1958). These examples are referred to in the context of a unique project recently conducted in Japan — the Tatsuno Art Project 2013. Held with the support of the Agency for Cultural Affairs of Japan, the project aims to present contemporary art to people from across Japan and around the globe, and to capitalize on the region’s unique cultural heritage, creating opportunities for people to communicate with local residents and making Tatsuno a more dynamic and popular place to visit. This paper considers various connections between art and the body by focusing on a selection of works included in the Tatsuno Art Project 2013: Arts and Memories. Known in past centuries as the ‘little Kyoto’ of Harima Province, Tatsuno is an atmospheric old castle town. It is mild and relatively warm all year round, with the climate of the nearby Seto Inland Sea region, said to be similar to that of the Mediterranean. Thanks to the support of numerous people, the organizers were able to hold the 2013 event which represented the culmination of their efforts over the past few years, being the largest ever in terms of scale with nine invited artists, eleven other participating artists, and one contemporary musician, for a total of 21 creators contributing works. With new spaces added to create a total of 16 venues, the community‑wide project truly achieved its goal of presenting the ‘historic castle town as a museum’. The project curators were also able to strengthen Tatsuno’s international ties by inviting artists from France and Poland to take part, as well as Japanese artists residing in the UK and Spain.

    This essey is the trial of the treating the problem of polish housing in XX century. We have here the example of phenomenon of joining the architectural modernism with regaining the independence by polish state after more than hundred years of dependence from the strange powers. Our reflections treat on three periods: the interwar, “The Polish Peoples” Republic and the time after the year 1989, or the fall of totalitarian rules in east Europe.

    Opis:
    The residence presented in this paper, namely the palace and park complex in Siemianowice Śląskie, is one of the most valuable monuments of this Upper Silesian town. Located in the town centre, it has had a well-deserved reputation for a number of years, still being among the elite places of interest in the local area. Throughout the time, the palace with the surrounding park have undergone a number of transformations that have influenced its contemporary state of maintenance, either directly or indirectly. The present study aims to analyse and assess the outcome of those transformations. The results of the study will be used to evaluate the present technical condition of the palace, as well as to draw conclusions as to the architectural and social challenges that the complex is facing nowadays.

    Łódź is often called “the capital of Polish film”. The cultural history of this town from the end of World War Two to the present day is closely connected with the movie industry. Marek Hendrykowski’s study on Łódź as a cinematic city offers the first comprehensive critical guide to the many films, interviews, published writings and individual memoirs of the Film School’s students and professors. This panoramic view presents the process of the historical transformation of cinematic images from Łódź between 1945 and 2013, as well as the profound influence this town had on many filmmakers. It serves as a reference work that will allow readers to navigate the subject’s wide range of examples: from Antoni Bohdziewicz, Jerzy Bossak, Kazimierz Kutz and Andrzej Wajda to Krzysztof Kieślowski, Wojciech Wiszniewski, Janusz Kijowski and Polish filmmakers of new generation.

    Przestrzenią szczególną w krajobrazie historycznych miast europejskich jest dzielnica willowa, której urodę i prestiż współtworzą walory naturalne, kompozycja urbanistyczna, a nade wszystko jakość architektury. Zarówno w przeszłości, jak i współcześnie, architektura willi miejskiej powiązana była z ogrodem i miała charakter reprezentacyjny. Synergiczna pełnia współczesnej architektury willowej budowana jest przez ponowoczesną interpretację miejsca, którego charakter niejednokrotnie skłania architektów do poszukiwania związków budowli z terenem i otaczającym krajobrazem, w przestrzennej i widokowej łączności z miastem lub przeciwnie, poprzez wizualne odseparowanie od ulicy lub selektywne kadrowanie widoków. Jakość prezentowanych przykładów współczesnej architektury willowej definiowana jest przez indywidualizm twórców. Każdy z architektów inaczej interpretuje miejsce, proponując stosowną formę architektoniczną domu w przestrzeni dzielnicy willowej miasta. Ceglana willa w Berlinie, projektu Davida Chipperfielda, to architektura symbiotycznej pełni z miejscem. House R128, w dzielnicy willowej Stuttgartu jest przykładem architektonicznej gry z miejscem, kreowanej przez architekta, a zarazem właściciela willi Wernera Sobka. House Susenberg, w prestiżowej dzielnicy willowej Zürichu, determinuje dialog architektury z przestrzenią miasta. Architekturę Willi Bǎteau-Bǎteau w Krakowie, autorstwa Dariusza Kozłowskiego i Marii Misiągiewicz, można określić mianem znaku w przestrzeni dzielnicy willowej. Synergiczna pełnia współczesnej architektury willowej w krajobrazie miasta stanowi o unikalnej jakości przestrzeni, nazywanej Duchem Miejsca.
    A high quality residential area is a unique space in landscapes of historic European cities. Its specific beauty is constituted by natural value, urban composition, but, above all, quality of architecture. Both historically and contemporarily architecture of a town house has been connected with a garden and has been characterized as representative. The synergistic completeness of contemporary villa architecture is constituted by postmodern interpretation of a place. Its character commonly provokes architects into searching of connections between a building, a landform and a surrounding landscape, in scenic and spatial connections with a city or otherwise by visual separation from a street or by selective view cropping. The quality of the presented examples of contemporary villa architecture is defined by individualism of the authors. Each of the architects interprets a place differently and suggests an appropriate architectural form of a house in a space of a high quality urban residential area. The brick villa in Berlin by Davida Chipperfielda is architecture of symbiotic completeness with a place. House R128 in a high quality residential area of Stuttgart is an example of architectural game with a landform, created by the architect and, at the same time, the owner of the house – Werner Sobka. House Susenberg in a high class residential area of Zurich determines a dialog of architecture and urban space. Architecture of Villa Bǎteau-Bǎteau in Cracow by Dariusz Kozłowski and Maria Misiągiewicz, might be called a sign in space of high quality residential area. The synergistic completeness of a town house and urban landscape coexistence constitutes a unique quality of a place, called a Spirit of a Place.
