    The Circus with a Broken Heart
    Polish contemporary circus
    Opis:
    Author of the article discusses in details the documentary film directed by Marek Tomasz Pawłowski The Circus with a Broken Heart (2009), in the context of the condition of Polish contemporary circus after 1989. This documentary film presents a picture of a modern circus, infected with entropy, decline and chaos. These forces destroy all constitutive elements of a circus: artists, arena, technical background, and the audience as well. Through presentation of specific people, events and phenomena the director creates the image of slow decline of a small circus “Bojaro”. Based on this picture, the author of the article draws conclusions about the causes of the crisis of Polish circus, and tries to analyze the image of the Polish province under capitalism. Reffering to the artistic values of the documentary, the author indicates its main assets, namely the use of metaphors and complex aesthetic figures, and the well organized dramatic structure. The analysis emphasis the figure of clown, which despite a documentary nature of the movie, goes beyond the reality and becomes the main metaphor of this film. According to the author’s the ethnographic fi m category is useful to discover a hidden meaning of this documentary film.

    Artykuł porusza zagadnienie edukacji teatralnej z wykorzystaniem elementów sztuki cyrkowej w pracy projektowej z młodzieżą w kontekście międzypokoleniowym i międzynarodowym. Na przykładzie dwóch polsko-francuskich projektów „Szekspir Projekt” i „MOON”, których celem była artystyczna wymiana między francuskimi aktorami zawodowymi oraz młodzieżową grupą artystów cyrkowych z Klubu 303 Ośrodka Kultury Kraków–Nowa Huta, autorka prezentuje wielowymiarowe (wychowawcze, społeczne i międzykulturowe) oddziaływanie teatru.
    The article discusses the issue of theatre education with the use of circus art elements in workshops for youth in the intergenerational and international context. Using as examples two Polish-French projects named „Shakespeare Project” and „MOON”, whose aim was an artistic exchange between professional French actors and a group of young circus artists from Klub 303 Ośrodka Kultury Kraków–Nowa Huta, the author presents multidimensional (educational, social and intercultural) influence of theatre.

    As many researchers claim, we live in the era of intertextual works. The analysis of the 3rd Symphony “Circus Maximus” by the American composer John Corigliano definitely proves this statement. The sym¬phony, finished in 2004, had been commissioned by Jerry Junkin – the conductor of the Wind Ensemble and Director of Bands at UT Austin. It is said to be an example of program music. Corigliano’s main pur¬pose was to show connections between the past (Rome Empire) and the contemporary world. The composer notices that animalisation and coerciveness are characteristics of people living in these two eras. The composition consists of eight movements and is written for wind ensemble and percussion. The aim of this article is to show intertext ual connotations and references present in the composition, such as: allusions, stylization, reminiscences, and memory of genre. In order to achieve this aim, the author used the Mieczysław Tomaszewski’s systematics of music-in-music existence. Moreover, similarities to Gustav Mahler and Charles Ives’ compositions are shown.
