The paper is based on the material contained in the ten-volume Dictionary of Names Used in Contemporary Poland, ed. by K. Rymut and in the Dictionary of Old-Polish Personal Names, ed. by W. Taszycki. It consists of three parts. In the first part consisting of such names as Rezmer (etc.) and Celmer (etc.), I reconstructs such old-Polish names as Redzimir (< Radzimir) and Żelimir; they are not confirmed in the SSNP. In the second part there are such names as Brommer, Kammer and Stammer, in the SSNO they are not confirmed; I interpret them as the effect of the respective reconstructed and abbreviated words, and thus confirmed directly or indirectly, the ancient two-element names like Bronimir, Kanimir and Stanimir. Finally, in the third part I devote space to such names as Cyrklaff (etc.) and Niecław (etc.). The name Cyrklaff is a graphic and phonetic transformation of the German name of the place Zirzlaff (Western Pomoria) with the historical inscriptions of the type Sillezlaw of 1335; this name is derived from the old-Polish Sulisław, noted from the twelfth century onward. The name Niecław I propose to derive from the name Niecisław, which has not been confirmed in the SSNO. Its forms, respectively reduced, would be contemporary names of the type Necel or Niec. The series of contemporary names Niecław − Necel − Niec would be somewhat analogical to such series of the contemporary names as e.g. Węcław − Wencel − Wenc.

The article describes the institution of the Professors' General Meeting which constituted the highest collegial self-government body at universities in the Second Polish Republic. The basic formal and legal conditions for the functioning of the institution are described. The body of the article is divided into six parts. The introduction points to the unique nature of the General Meeting in the context of Polish academic legislation of the 20th century and the first decade of the 21st century as well as the grounds for commencing the research from the date of 15 September 1920. Subsequently, the system of public academic education is described, including the classification of universities within the scope relevant for the subject of the research, and academic privileges considered unique in comparison with other research and education units are specified. The second chapter discusses the institution of the Professors' General Meeting and its three stages of development that can be identified in the interwar period. The author also analyzes the member roster and its changes in time as well as the impact that the academic groups (teachers, administrative employees and students, including all ranks and categories) exercised upon the functioning of the university, comparing the 1920-1939 period and the Third Polish Republic. The next chapter describes the basic procedures of the Professors' General Meeting. The further deliberations concern the detailed competences of the body with special emphasis put on the reduction of these competences and their classification in terms of dependence on or independence from the approval of the Minister of Religious Denominations and Public Education. Additionally, the specific character of the Professors' General Meeting in one-faculty universities in 1933-1937 is also discussed since the rights of that body in such cases were extended by the responsibilities of the faculty council and the university senate. The article is concluded with a summary of basic facts from the history of the institution of the Professors' General Meeting at public universities in the interwar Poland and an attempt to explain the conspicuous tendencies in its development and the reasons for this development.

(Polish title: Królestwo Cypru jako obiekt zainteresowan panstw sródziemnomorskich w latach 1192-1489. Próba zarysowania). Under the rule of the French Lusignan dynasty, Cyprus quickly became the focus of interest to other countries: Sicily under the reign of the Hohenstaufen, Anjou and Aragon houses, Italian countries of Genoa, Venice and Duchy of Savoy, England and African Mamluk Sultanate. Initially the interest was based on political reasons, however, with the arrival of the Crusaders to the Holy Land and then the development of trade with Muslims there were economic reasons for seizing power over the island. What is more, the above deliberation clearly reveals the declining political position of the Lusignan dynasty who starting from the end of the 14thcentury could only observe how Mediterranean countries fought for control over Cyprus. After the death of Peter I of Cyprus (1359-1369), the most prominent king and the conqueror of Alexandria, the period of glory, when the island infl uenced international policy mostly - though not only - in the eastern region of the Mediterranean Sea, came to an end. From then on Cyprus was merely a subject of diplomatic, economic as well as military efforts and conflicts undertaken by Mediterranean countries. The present paper does not assume to exhaust the subject. However, it is an introduction to a broader research on the matter in question which is immensely relevant for depicting the medieval political and economic situation in the Mediterranean Sea region.

The analysis of the 19th-Century rendition of „Little Office” indicated that in comparison to the contemporary text of the devotion the religious language has not undergone major changes. In the historical text there are only a few features not present in contemporary prayers. These include: – é in affixes -éj in singular genitive and in affix -ém in singular instrumental and locative cases in the adjectival and pronoun declension; – differences in creating past participle with suffixes -one, today inflected as -ęte; – affix ą in singular accusative of feminine nouns, today inflected as -ę; – affix -m in first-person plural verbs, today inflected as -my. Similarly, vocabulary that today is classified as archaic has been preserved in contemporary prayers. The immutability of religious language is one of its fundamental features that has been in force in the Catholic Church until the Second Vatican Council.

What Does It Mean to Be a Polish Art Critic Today? The discussion on the topic of contemporary literary criticism has been contained within two symbolic poles: the article What does it mean today to be a Polish writer by Karol Maliszewski written in 1995 and What does it mean today to be a Polish authoress, written in 2008 by Igor Stokfiszewski. The former paper, which is characteristic of the critical-literary awareness of the 90s of the 20th century, promotes literature that is far from being involved and is based on an individual writer’s gesture; the latter, on the other hand, belongs to one of the better known critical projects of recent years and it promotes a political turnaround proclaiming literature that is engagé and one that is treated as an instrument of social critique. The project of literary criticism is at the same time an expressive and controversial proposition and its significance also consists in the fact that it became a strong impulse which mobilized literary criticism to define and defend other conceptions of literature and criticism and in this way contribute to a fundamental debate in the milieu of critics.

The Circus with a Broken Heart

Author of the article discusses in details the documentary film directed by Marek Tomasz Pawłowski The Circus with a Broken Heart (2009), in the context of the condition of Polish contemporary circus after 1989. This documentary film presents a picture of a modern circus, infected with entropy, decline and chaos. These forces destroy all constitutive elements of a circus: artists, arena, technical background, and the audience as well. Through presentation of specific people, events and phenomena the director creates the image of slow decline of a small circus “Bojaro”. Based on this picture, the author of the article draws conclusions about the causes of the crisis of Polish circus, and tries to analyze the image of the Polish province under capitalism. Reffering to the artistic values of the documentary, the author indicates its main assets, namely the use of metaphors and complex aesthetic figures, and the well organized dramatic structure. The analysis emphasis the figure of clown, which despite a documentary nature of the movie, goes beyond the reality and becomes the main metaphor of this film. According to the author’s the ethnographic fi m category is useful to discover a hidden meaning of this documentary film.

Musical theatre in Poland entered a new stage in its history after 1989. Being forced to exist in a new economical situation, it had to develop a new organization model, different from the one it was using for last 45 years. Managing directors of such theatres as Musical Thea-tre in Gdynia, Musical Theatre Roma in Warsaw or Musical Theatre in Wrocław reformed their institutions, introducing strategies present in the Western theatrical world, for example castings for performers, giving up permanent theatrical groups etc. In theatres in Gdynia, Warsaw and in Rozrywka Theatre in Chorzów many Polish premieres of worldwide known musicals took place. Artistic and technical quality of Musical Theatre Roma in Warsaw reached the levels of European theatres of that type. Theatre in Wrocław, that has changed its name into Musical Theatre Capitol, became the leading centre of sophisticated musical theatre. Wojciech Kościelniak, connected with theatres in Gdynia and Wrocław, has directed many new and original musicals, based usually on outstanding literary works. Kościelniak is one of the most interesting personalities of contemporary Polish musical theatre.

Rev. Prof. Marian Wolniewicz is one of the most outstanding contemporary biblical scholars of the Poznań theological milieu. From his youth until the end of his life (t 2005) he wrote personal lyric poetry. A selection of his poems was published posthumously by the Theological Faculty of Adam Mickiewicz University in a volume titled A Spiritual Diary in Verse edited by Feliks Lenort with an introduction by Zdzisław Grzegorski, a theologian and scholar of Polish literature. The poems predominantly express man's religious experience through impressions of the moment and feelings evoked by sights of the landscape, but the lyric subject does not define himself through realities characteristic of a priest and theologian. In his poetic attitude Rev. Marian Wolniewicz was inspired by the poetry of Wojciech Bąk and the French symbolists. Similarly to Stephane Mallarme he fulfilled the concepts of subsequent poems as a continuation of one single oeuvre which would finish with the death of the author. His last poetic notation was also his last attempt to translate a verse from the Gospel according to John.

Founded in November 1957, the Experimental Studio of Polish Radio (SEPR) was the fifth electronic music studio in Europe and the seventh in the world. It was an extraordinary phenomenon in the reality of the People’s Poland of those times, equally exceptional as the Warsaw Autumn International Festival of Contemporary Music, established around the same time - in 1956. Both these ‘institutions’ would be of fundamental significance for contemporary Polish music, and they would collaborate closely with one another. But the history of Polish electroacoustic music would to a large extent be the history of the Experimental Studio. The first autonomous work for tape in Poland was Włodzimierz Kotoñski’s Etiuda konkretna (na jedno uderzenie w talerz) [Concrete study (for a single strike of a cymbal)], completed in November 1958. It was performed at the Warsaw Autumn in i960, and from then on electroacoustic music was a fixture at the festival, even a marker of the festival’s ‘modernity’, up to 2002 - the year when the last special ‘concert of electroacoustic music’ appeared on the programme. In 2004, the SEPR ceased its activities, but thanks to computers, every composer can now have a studio at home. There are also thriving electroacoustic studios at music academies, with the Wroclaw studio to the fore, founded in 1998 by Stanisław Krupowicz, the leading light of which became Cezary Duchnowski. Also established in Wroclaw, in 2005, was the biennial International Festival of Electroacoustic Music ‘Música Electrónica Nova’.

Przedstawione wyżej opisy dowodzą, że wyraz ksiądz wielokrotnie uczestniczył w procesie reinterpretacji słowotwórczej – zarówno jako wyraz motywowany, jak i motywujący – w polszczyźnie dawnej i współczesnej, w ich odmianach gwarowej i potocznej. O takiej aktywności tego rzeczownika zadecydował splot różnorodnych czynników wewnątrz- i zewnątrzjęzykowych. Te pierwsze to z jednej strony niepodzielność słowotwórcza tego wyrazu i brak jego czytelnej więzi semantycznej z genetyczną podstawą nominacyjną, z drugiej zaś – przypadkowe i nieprzypadkowe podobieństwo fonetyczne do wyrazów książę, księga i księżyc. Podstawowym zewnątrzjęzykowym powodem wielości prób włączenia tego rzeczownika do rodziny słowotwórczej i obudowania go siatką relacji semantycznych jest natomiast niezmiennie ważna rola księży w polskim życiu publicznym.
The article discusses the role of a word ksiądz in the process of an etymological interpretation and reinterpretation in the bygone and contemporary Polish language. In the process of reinterpretation the word appears in the role of a reinterpreted word, which means underlying the reinterpretation by means of other words such as książę, księga i księżyc and also in the role of a reinterpreting word, by means of which other words (e.g. księżyc) are reinterpreted

Literature, Feminism, Criticism – Other Constellations? In her article the authoress outlines the issues concerning the relation between feminism, literary criticism and modern literature. She poses some questions concerning the prose oeuvre of contemporary Polish women authors as well as the social contexts and aesthetic strategies associated with it. What proved to be important here were also issues allowing reflection on the change of literary-critical and historical and literary discourses inspired by feminist thought, as well as issues allowing to record the losses and gains resulting from the entanglement of feminist literary criticism in mass communication and the results of the „cultural turnaround” of feminist literary studies.

This article proposes some considerations on a particular variation of the elegiac mood represented by and manifested in lyrical farewells of departing mothers. A review of the variants commences with an analysis of a particularly important work by Tadeusz Różewicz written at the beginning of this century — Matka odchodzi. The book was, at the time, a particular reference point for the following poetic volumes in which the theme of the death of the poet’s mother was paramount and significant. The article also focuses on volumes of poems, written by poets that belonged to different generations but shared the same date of publication, i.e. the year 2009. Both clear similarities and marked differences in the actual commitment in carrying out the theme and in creating the profiles of mothers that have passed away are to be found in the works of Piotr Sommer (Dni i noce), Jan Polkowski (Cantus) and Eugeniusz Tkaczyszyn-Dycki (Piosenka o zależnościach i uzależnieniach).
