The paper presents contemporary tendencies which can be seen in Polish monumental public sculpture of last three decades. They are connected with Polish history and especially new forms of historical policy, presenting problems avoided by official historiography of Poland before 1989. The monumental public sculpture has some features that can be easily noticed, like exaggeration, excess, and weakness of forms, as well as focusing on matters being result of martyrological shape of Polish memory.

Tis article presents in what way the specifc comprehension of tolerance’s notion has been formed in modern Polish society and how it is linked with some Poles’ attitudes towards diferent minorities. Consequently, two analytic models of Poles’ behaviors have been shown. Every studied behavior has been typically considered as ‘tolerant’ in Polish society. Moreover, two essential processes have been taken into consideration during creation of these models: frstly, the succession of norms and values, and secondly, the Polish society democratization.

phenomenon of prostitution in contemporary Poland
prostitution
Opis:
In the article I would like to present the results of field studies in which I attempted to analyse the phenomenon of prostitution in contemporary Poland. The main task was to localise the phenomenon within the social structure of big urban agglomerations (particularly Krakow and Warsaw) and to investigate how prostitutes function in the society. Partial research problems described in the article were as follows: 1. To find out what prostitutes define as the worst part and the greatest drawback of their profession, how they manage these negative aspects, and who can possibly help them. It was also important to locate possible threats and the ways to eliminate or reduce them. 2. Another issue was the plane of contact with the generally understood state, from the system solutions concerning prostitution (including the answer to the question whether prostitution should be a legal profession) to everyday contact with various state institutions. It was vital if the state institutions responded to prostitutes’ expectations and to what extent, as well what their expectations towards such institutions are and how public assistance for this group should look like. 3. The picture which started to emerge after first interviews left no illusions. The presence of state institutions in prostitutes’ lives is minimal, the state institutions serve mainly to control, not to protect or assist. In a sense, this social group is an abandoned one, owing to abolitionism policy the state has withdrawn from any actions in this sphere. In case of prostitutes, who function under constant threat, the official state organs do not even perform the role provided by the most extreme liberal conceptions, that is even the role of a “watchman” who guards merely physical security. This is why it was so important to investigate who performs this role in the stead of the state, if their actions are effective, in which place of social structure prostitutes obtain actual protection, and, additionally, support and assistance. 4. As a result, a significant part of the study has been devoted to an analysis of social environment in which prostitutes function: with whom they have most frequent contacts, to whom they turn for help, and how they define their place in the society themselves. As a consequence, this subject of field studies – the social environment of prostitution – appeared to be an important and independent research issue. Particularly interesting issues included questions how everyday life of prostitutes looks like, how much their profession interferes with their usual social relations, how their relations with the closest people and families look like, and if they are able to maintain social relations outside their professional group. How the respondents manage their incomes and if they are able to carry out their financial plans seemed a good sign of effective everyday functioning.

Opis:
This article, written from an anthropological perspective and based on extended personal fieldwork by the author, consists of a detailed discussion of two places of Holocaust memory in present-day Poland: the memorial museum at Auschwitz and selected Jewish sites in the city of Kraków. The principal argument is that both the Auschwitz museum and Jewish Kraków have meanings which are multi-layered and multi-dimensional. For example, Auschwitz means different things to different people; some of those meanings are particularist (relating to the histories of different victim groups), some are universal. Similarly, the character of Jewish Kraków is understood not only in relation to the physical presence of a former Jewish quarter (now substantially restored), but also in relation to the overpowering awareness of ruin and the absence of Jews. The investigation and analysis of common interpretations of these two places reveal that they rest on numerous contradictions and paradoxes; the real and the imagined, usually understood as polar opposites, may in fact coexist in people’s minds. In a sense it can be described as a ‘chorus of voices’, all of which need to be heard and acknowledged. But these voices are not always in harmony; on the contrary, what often comes across is dissonance or cacophony. In other words, there is no fixed interpretative scheme, no unified or stable approach. Nor, perhaps, should there be, in approaching something so totally subversive as genocide. The job of the scholar, in representing and problematizing how people make sense of the Holocaust in such contexts, thus requires the recognition of ethnographic inconsistencies and uncertainties, and in consequence to challenge preconceptions, mystifications, stereotypes, and simplifications.

The article concerns contemporary Polish theatre, and particularly the creativity of young directors who are in their thirties: Monika Pęcikiewicz, Monika Strzępka and Wiktor Rubin who give up the traditional theatre and mingle with mass and popular culture. The article also focuses on the problem of reception, because theatrical performances, distancing themselves from the traditional ones, still cause emotional reactions of conservative specta-tors who often feel shocked and offended by such theatre. Such performances ignore the hegemony of dramatical text – they deconstruct cause and effect order of narration, con-front text with contemporary context, they are incoherent; they use new media to contact with a spectator by acting that is based on quoting a character and constant balancing be-tween theatrical performance and private life.

The article is devoted to the influence of common law legal argumentation called “the Cultural Defense” on the contemporary Polish legal reality. Starting with a summary of the concept, the author analyses current Polish law and focuses on precedents from national and international cases in order to present the most essential elements of the abovementioned phenomenon. The author tries to provide an answer whether the subject in question could be qualified as a non-statutory justification, a premise for the commutation of sentence or something else. An attempt to reply to such a question recalls compensatory justice which in Poland is still underestimated.

The article interprets selected works of action art in Poland, but in the context of their relationship - more or less direct - to the political situation in Poland under the rule of the totalitarian regime in 1945-1989. Paying attention to the political aspect of the works of performance art allows them to be compared with the works of Korean artists who create works of action also in totalitarian regime conditions, although of a different nature. Action art turns out to be an effective way of practicing free creative expression, because it is difficult for totalitarian authorities to apply preventive censorship against ephemeral art. Although the authorities use various repressions against artists on the spot during the action and ex post. Despite the geographical distance between Korea and Poland, despite the cultural and social differences, as well as the lack of direct personal contacts between the artists - the forms of action art and their context of creation and its critical goals are similar and are similarly effective in the conditions existing in both countries.

Opis:
Musical theatre in Poland entered a new stage in its history after 1989. Being forced to exist in a new economical situation, it had to develop a new organization model, different from the one it was using for last 45 years. Managing directors of such theatres as Musical Thea-tre in Gdynia, Musical Theatre Roma in Warsaw or Musical Theatre in Wrocław reformed their institutions, introducing strategies present in the Western theatrical world, for example castings for performers, giving up permanent theatrical groups etc. In theatres in Gdynia, Warsaw and in Rozrywka Theatre in Chorzów many Polish premieres of worldwide known musicals took place. Artistic and technical quality of Musical Theatre Roma in Warsaw reached the levels of European theatres of that type. Theatre in Wrocław, that has changed its name into Musical Theatre Capitol, became the leading centre of sophisticated musical theatre. Wojciech Kościelniak, connected with theatres in Gdynia and Wrocław, has directed many new and original musicals, based usually on outstanding literary works. Kościelniak is one of the most interesting personalities of contemporary Polish musical theatre.

This essay is a review based on material from nineteen published interviews that focused on a diagnosis of Polish conditions after a year of the Law and Justice [Prawo i Sprawiedliwość] party’s rule. The interviews were conducted with experts—academics and journalists—by Michał Sutowski, who published these interviews as a collection.  The author demonstrates that such a collective diagnosis has major advantages in Poland’s current, rapidly changing, social conditions. Such a method is quicker than the scholarly approach to describing and explaining the state of affairs. The collection of interviews could also be a valuable source of inspiration for public debates and scholarly research in many areas, and could contain guidelines for decision-makers.

The study makes use of the data from the weather stations in Zakopane and on Kasprowy Wierch Mt. from the years 19512006, mainly from 1966-2006. The thermal conditions in lowland Poland was determined on the basis of the area-averaged time series (45 stations). Various thermal characteristics were considered. The increase of the rate of upward trend in temperature at the turn of the 21st century, as well as the change of the seasonal distribution of the warming in comparison with the preceding long-term periods, have been documented. Symptoms of increase of the thermal continentality have also been observed.

This text shows changes in the way oral history has been perceived in the last 10 years in Poland, what projects are being conducted at the moment and where research on this subject is going. Contemporary research in oral history has taken a few directions. First, this method is treated as a source prompted by historians and used in by them in research activity. Second, an interest taken in this method is manifested in methodological and historiographic reflection. The third group is research on archiving audio-visual documents. Another area of interest for oral history is widely understood education and popularization of this method.  In Poland there are a few serious institutions/centrers that focus their research and work methods on oral form of information, such as Narodowe Archiwum Cyfrowe (National Digital Archive) and Centrum Edukacji Obywatelskiej (Center for Civic Education). Widely available are internet sources such as „Uczyć się z historii” (“To Learn from History”) and „Świadkowie Historii” (“Witnesses to History”), which gather oral evidence from people all over Poland. The article discusses also activities of the KARTA Center from Wrocław, “Brama Grodzka – Teatr NN” (Grodzka Gate – NN Theatre) Center and Studio Historii Mówionej (Oral History Center) from Lublin. The Memory and Future Institute from Wrocław is a thriving institution as well. An analysis has also been made of initiatives taken by circles in Olsztyn, Łódź, and at the Auschwitz-Birke-nau Museum. In 2009 the first in Poland Oral History Society was founded (Towarzystwo Historii Mówionej). This was possible thanks to institutions that are growing and becoming more and more active, and also because of academics who take interest in this kind of research. Every year the Society organizes nationwide conferences. Also other academic centers and societies organize conferences and meetings devoted to the culture of memory and oral history.

This paper is an attempt to reconsider the first years of systemic transformations in Poland, or, more precisely, the course of events during democratisation process going on in 1989, and the fundamental problems of the consolidation of democracy in the following years. In a comparative analysis referring to categories used by Samuel P. Huntington in his book: The Third Wave. Democratization in the Late Twentieth Century, it presents the consequences of the fact that democratisation in Poland was achieved by ‘transplacement’ – joint actions of the government and the opposition, manifested in particular at the Round Table talks. Further the main dilemmas of subsequent years are analysed. These include: the economic and social issues, the problem of the accountability for the past, and the question of how to deal with the praetorians of the former regime. Changes in the social perception of the early transformation period are also described.
Analizuje najistotniejsze dylematy następnych lat, a więc problemy gospodarcze i socjalne, „problem kata” (tzn. kwestię rozliczenia przeszłości) oraz „problem pretorianina” (tzn. sposób traktowania przedstawicieli poprzednich resortów siłowych). Opisuje także zmiany społecznego postrzegania wydarzeń z owych lat.

Rev. Prof. Marian Wolniewicz is one of the most outstanding contemporary biblical scholars of the Poznań theological milieu. From his youth until the end of his life (t 2005) he wrote personal lyric poetry. A selection of his poems was published posthumously by the Theological Faculty of Adam Mickiewicz University in a volume titled A Spiritual Diary in Verse edited by Feliks Lenort with an introduction by Zdzisław Grzegorski, a theologian and scholar of Polish literature. The poems predominantly express man's religious experience through impressions of the moment and feelings evoked by sights of the landscape, but the lyric subject does not define himself through realities characteristic of a priest and theologian. In his poetic attitude Rev. Marian Wolniewicz was inspired by the poetry of Wojciech Bąk and the French symbolists. Similarly to Stephane Mallarme he fulfilled the concepts of subsequent poems as a continuation of one single oeuvre which would finish with the death of the author. His last poetic notation was also his last attempt to translate a verse from the Gospel according to John.

The article is an attempt to find relations between geology and the dynamics of the Mesozoic surface of the Łódź Synclinorium, the Radomsko Elevation and the Bełchatów Graben and the present relief on the border of the Polish Lowlands and Uplands in its central part. Fossil relief has been compared with the present one as related to the extent of the recession phases of the Saalian (Wartanian) ice-sheet. A significant convergence has been found between the Mesozoic surface plain and the main morphologic elements. The role of elevations and fossil valleys has been stressed as stable forms in the pre-Pleistocene and contemporary landscape. Also stressed has been the meaning of grabens and elevations enforcing longer stoppages of the Wartanian stadial of the Middle Polish Glaciations.
