Opis:
Thirty-five near-surface sediment samples were recovered from the continental shelf and upper slope regions of the north-western (NW) Gulf of Mexico. The geochemical data of the sediments recovered were examined to investigate the weathering intensity, provenance, palaeo-oxygenation condition, and level of heavy metal contamination. The sediments analysed showed a moderate to high intensity of chemical weathering. Major and trace element concentrations indicated a terrigenous origin, closely related to the weathering of rocks rich in aluminosilicates. The results of this study further revealed that major rivers, the Bravo and Soto La Marina, played an important role in delivering sediments to the study area. The concentration of transition trace elements such as Cr, Cu, Ni, and V revealed that the sediments were derived from intermediate rocks such as andesite. The V/Cr, Ni/Co, and Cu/Zn ratios in the sediments were <2, <5, and <1, respectively, suggesting a depositional process occurred under well-oxygenated conditions. Principle Component Analysis (PCA) did not show a significant difference in sediment texture between the continental shelf and slope areas. The enrichment factor (EF) and Geo-accumulation index (lgeo) values were <2 and <1, respectively, suggesting the absence of an anthropogenic input.

Opis:
Główne zanieczyszczenia, to metale ciężkie, fluor, pestycydy, a nawet dioksyny. Do naparów przenikało średnio 12,6% WWA zawartych w suszu. Dominowały w naparach WWA o 2, 3 i 4pierścieniach, podczas gdy bardziej toksyczne związki występowały w śladowych ilościach. Stężenie 23 WWA i BaP w naparach mieściło się w granicach od 332,5 ng/dm3 do 2245,9 ng/dm3 i 0,35 ng/dm3 do 18,7 ng/dm3.
Tea is the one of most widely consumed beverage in the world. It is generally believed that tea consumption might have health promoting properties. But residues of certain chemical compounds might impose a health threat on tea drinkers. The main contaminants are heavy metals, fluoride, pesticides and even dioxins. Tea lives which possess a high surface area can be contaminated with atmospheric PAHs. The manufacturing processes may also introduce PAHs into tea lives. The aim of his study was to determine the contamination of black, green, red and white teas by PAHs. In this investigation, content of 23 PAH, i.e 16 EPA PAH and 15 EU PAH were determined in 18 brands of tea and its infusions. The analytical procedure was based on ultrasonic extraction for dried tea and liquid-liquid extraction for infusions. All samples were cleaned up by florisil cartridge. The total content of 23 PAH varied between 22.9 µg/kg to 2945.5 µg/kg and 2.7 µg/kg to 63,1 µg/kg µg/kg for BaP. The analysed tea samples showed an increasing presence of PAH in the following order (mean value): black tea< red tea< green tea< white tea. However the highest content of PAH was found in the one brand of black tea bag both in sum of PAH and BaP content. During tea infusion 1.,6% of total PAHs contained in tea was released into the beverage. The dominant PAHs in tea infusion were 2, 3 and 4 rings PAH, while the most toxic compounds were found at trace amounts. The concentrations of total 23 PAHs and BaP in tea infusions ranged from 332.5 ng/dm3 to 2245.9 ng/dm3 and 0.35 ng/dm3 to 18.7 ng/dm3 respectively.

Opis:
In recent years, an increase in environmental pollution has been observed due to rapid industrialization, unsafe agricultural practices, and increased human activities on energy reservoirs. The wide use of petroleum hydrocarbon products as energy sources has contaminated the soil and the environment, thereby posing serious threats to all life forms, including humans. This study aimed to investigate the role of poultry droppings and pig dung in enhancing the bioremediation of diesel-contaminated soil. Soil samples were collected, processed by air drying and sieving, weighed in experimental bowls (5000 g), and contaminated with 250 ml of diesel. Then, poultry droppings and pig dung were added to the soil samples in different ratios, namely 1 : 1, 1 : 2, and 2 : 1. The diesel contaminated soil sample without treatment served as the control. Thirty days after exposure to the experimental treatment regimes, the total bacterial count and the hydrocarbon-utilizing bacterial count of the diesel contaminated soil ranged from 0.4 × 104 to 2.7 × 104 CFU/g and from 0.1 × 104 to 2.1 × 104 CFU/g, respectively. The total fungal count and the hydrocarbon-utilizing fungi count ranged from 0.6 × 103 to 2.1 × 103 SFU/g and from 0.2 × 103 to 1.7 × 103 SFU/g, respectively. Bacillus subtilis, Micrococcus sp., Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Proteus vulgaris, Aspergillus niger, Penicillium sp., and Mucor sp were found to be active degraders. A significant reduction in the total aliphatic hydrocarbon (TAH) content of the diesel-contaminated soil was reported, with remediation approaching 95% in 30 days when the poultry droppings – pig dung mixture was added to the soil. The remediation of diesel-contaminated soils is important for the enhancement of the ecosystem. This study has shown that the use of farm waste such as the poultry droppings – pig dung mixture can enhance the remediation of diesel-contaminated soils.

Opis:
Recreational Parks (RP) of the city Poznan were investigated in October 2009 in order to evaluate contamination state of their soils by lead and cadmium. From the Recreational Park Marcinkowski – RPM, Recreational Park Solacki – RPS, Recreational Park Wodziczko – RPW and Recreational Park Piatkowo – RPP the soil samples were collected at two depths, ie 0–10 and 10–20 cm, in the quantity of 36, 52, 32 and 34, respectively. The total content of Pb and Cd was determined in these samples, as well as some their selected physical and chemical properties. Detailed assessment of the soil contamination state was undertaken on the basis of different indices such as geochemical accumulation index (Igeo), factor (C f i ) and degree (Cdeg) of contamination. The evaluation of soils made by applying Pb-Igeo has shown that parks may be ranged as follows: RP Piatkowo < RP Solacki < RP Wodziczko < RP Marcinkowski. The concern and threat related to the impact of Pb on humans requires more restrictive limits of content, hence geochemical background (GB) values as reported by Czarnowska [20] may be considered as more adapted for protecting from potential health hazards. In the case of cadmium, the Cd-Igeo based contamination assessment allowed to organize parks accordingly: RP Piatkowo < RP Marcinkowski < RP Solacki < RP Wodziczko. Cadmium contribution in the overall contamination (Cdeg) changed as did the Cd-Igeo indices. This was mostly reflected in the RPs Wodziczko and Solacki and intermediately in the RP Marcinkowski. On the basis of the performed geochemical evaluation of soil Recreational Park Piatkowo is the sole to be classified as free from Pb and Cd contamination threat.

Oznaczono całkowitą zawartość Pb i Cd oraz wybrane właściwości fizyczne i chemiczne tych próbek gleby. Szczegółową ocenę stanu zanieczyszczenia gleb rzeprowadzono na podstawie różnych wskaźników, takich jak: geochemiczny indeks akumulacji (Igeo) oraz spółczynnik (C współczynnik ) i stopień (Cdeg) zanieczyszczenia.

Opis:
Four metals (Cu, Zn, Pb and Cd) were assayed in soils within the impact zone of the Miasteczko Slaskie Zinc Smelter (southern Poland). The investigated area is afforested and has been subjected for a long time to intensive deposition of metal-bearing dusts. Soil pHKCl varied broadly from very acidic (pHKCl = 3.4) to slightly alkaline (pHKCl = 7.2). Organic carbon (Corg) content fluctuated within a large range, i.e., 5.5 - 66.4 g kg-1, whereas the cation exchange capacity (CEC) was in most cases markedly low (from 1.4 to 5.9 cmol(+)kg-1), with exception for two sites (C and D) exhibiting values of 26.8 and 15.1 cmol(+)kg-1, respectively. Total Zn, Pb and Cd contents exceeded manifold their respective levels in the Earth crust (reference value - RV)) as well as those suggested as background levels for Poland (BLP). The assessment of the contamination of soils by these metals was undertaken on the basis of geoaccumulation indices (lgeo), contamination factors Cl and degrees of contamination (Cdeg). The overall metal contamination represented practically two classes: low contamination for Cu; considerable to extreme contamination (in ascending order) for Zn, Cd, and Pb. The contribution (BLP-based assessment) of each metal to the degree of contamination index varied from 2.14 % (for Cu), via 26.33% (for Zn) to quite equally for Cd and Pb, both representing 35.22% and 36.32, respectively. It is worth pointing out that copper was the sole metal to threaten the least (Figure 1) the soils of the investigated ecosystem.

Opis:
This study aimed to analyze the heavy metal contamination in sediments and their potential ecological risks. The sediment samples were collected using PVC pipes and grab samplers at nine study sites in Youtefa Bay, namely five sites in the mangrove ecosystem, two sites in the estuary, and two sites in the middle of the bay. The heavy metal content was analyzed using Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometry. The results of the analysis of the heavy metal content in the sediment were in the following order: Zn > Cu > Pb > Ni > Cr > Cd > As > Hg (106.077±98.857, 28.553±30.505, 19.798±11.541, 17.665±11.457, 12.103±0.124, 2.996±1.235, 0.149±0.124, and 0.082±0.047 mg kg-1, respectively). Only the Cd content has exceeded the Threshold Effect Level (TEL) at all study sites. On the other hand, the As and Cr content has not exceeded TEL at any study site. The content of Hg, Cr, Pb, Zn, and Ni has exceeded TEL only at a few study sites. The heavy metal content in estuary sites is higher than in mid-bay and mangrove sites, which can provide the information on the sources of heavy metal contaminants. There is a significant correlation for the content of Cu, As, Pb, Cd, Zn, and Ni which can indicate that the sources of these heavy metals are relatively the same (r = 0.569 to r = 0.950). The CF and Igeo values indicate that there has been contamination of several heavy metals studied. Further analysis ( ERI ) showed that the heavy metal content in the sediments poses a potentially serious ecological risk. Most of the potential ecological risks are the contribution of Cd and Hg which have high toxicity factors and this should receive special attention from local governments and stakeholders to prevent higher contamination.

An effect of factors determining water quality in the water supply network in Kraków is assessed. The data collected over a four-year research period included quality parameters of water taken from the water distribution system in the period between 1 January 2011 and 31 December 2014. In the analysis the supply zones of four municipal water treatment plants in Krakow were considered. The selection of 29 water sampling points within the supply area allowed comparing water quality with respect to operational and technological aspects. Factor analysis enabled 4 components explaining correlations between tap water quality variables to be distinguished. It follows from the research performed that the obtained factors applied to 77% of overall water variability. The highest share was assigned to factor 1 that explained 32% of the chemical composition of water under consideration and was correlated with calcium, conductance, nitrates (V), magnesium and to a moderate extent with Σ THM (with negative sign).

Owing to the chemical composition of sewage sludge (SS), it may be used as an alternative to fertilizers; however, before land application, it must be assessed in terms of its contents of heavy metals considering their potential mobility in the soil. The aim of this study was focused on evaluating the potential mobility of oxyphinic elements – Mn and Ni in SS. The samples were collected from 4 different wastewaters treatment plants located in the Wielkopolska province at the same time points in 3 consecutive years. The levels of Mn and Ni were assessed using the BCR sequential method. The risk assessment code, and individual contamination factor were additionally calculated. The sewage sludge from small WWTPs was characterised by significantly lower amounts of metals in comparison to those originating from the large ones. It was found that both metals were dominant in loosely and relatively loosely bound fractions of all analyzed SS. It was confirmed by high values of risk assessment codes and individual contamination factor. Mn and Ni belonging to the group of oxyphinic elements showed significant similarities in the distribution of SS fractions. Large and rapidly activated pool of Mn and Ni may be a beneficial and valuable source of nutrients for plants, but certain dangers related to the possible accumulation of these elements in soils could be also considered.

The aim of this paper was to analyse the impact of long-term operation of a zinc-works on the soil environment based on 20-year observations. The study material comprised the surface soil samples and soil profiles collected in close vicinity of the zinc-works in Miasteczko Śląskie (Southern Poland) and in the locations within certain distance from the plant. The total content of Pb and Zn in the surface soil samples collected in the vicinity of the zinc-works in 2018 ranged from 3,975 to 26,200 mg/kg for Pb and from 3,358 to 21,867 mg/kg for Zn. These values were considerably higher than those recorded 20 years earlier (i.e. 601–11,939 mg/kg and 1,009–13,924 mg/kg for Pb and Zn, respectively). The mineral composition was dominated by quartz, feldspars and carbonates (e.g. calcium carbonate). Additionally, iron hydroxides (lepidocrocite), lead sulphates (anglesite) and zinc silicates (hemimorphite) were found. The bioavailable quantities of Pb and Zn in the soil samples collected in 2018 amounted to 30% of the total content in the case of Pb and 34% of the total Zn content. Twenty years earlier, the mean values were 66% (Pb) and 44% (Zn), respectively. The acidity of the soil samples collected in the vicinity of the zincworks indicated their very good buffering capacity, as well as the capacity to release 58-60% of the total Pb and Zn contents to the environment, with a pH decrease of only 3 units. The Risk Assessment Code (RAC) calculated based on the Pb and Zn cations in the exchangeable positions and bound with carbonates indicates that even after 20 years, there is still a high environmental risk related to the presence of those metals in soils. This paper also demonstrates that presently the major factors contributing to the pollution of soil are deflation and suffosion of small particles from the old, unprotected mining and industrial waste dumps.

Marine fishery products have been contaminated with microplastic (MPs), including molluscs, crustacean, and fish. The study aimed to analyze the number and types of MPs in the digestive tract and sediment, correlation between number of MPs with total body length, and estimated uptake of MPs in the fish from sediment using Bioaccumulation Factor (BAF). The method of determining sampling point involved purposive sampling and direct observation at Pramuka Island, Seribu Islands, Indonesia. Groupers fish were found in 20 individuals with 4 species of Epinephelus areolatus, E. ongus, E. sexfasciatus, and E. fuscoguttatus. The number of MPs found in the gastrointestinal tract of Epinephelus is 1648 particles with 3 types: fiber, fragment, and pellet. The highest number of MPs in the sediment was at dock and the lowest was at Gosong Pramuka Island. The numbers of MPs in the digestion tract does not affect the body length of individual species. The BAF value indicates result that the MPs uptake in sediments to gastrointestinal tract of Epinephelus grouper is low. All samples of the Epinephelus grouper were contaminated with MPs.

Opis:
The goal of the research was to evaluate the heavy metal detection and potential ecological risks in lake’s water. Geological formations consisting essentially of sandstone and quaternary marine or dune sands characterize the study area. With a climate of the Mediterranean type winters are mild and humid, whereas summers hot and dry. At the analysis center of the Faculty of Sciences, the monitoring of ETMs is carried out by ICP-MS, the processing of data and the validation of the analysis method have been drafted according to the NF T 90-120 standard applicable to the analysis in a laboratory. The analysis covers concentrations of heavy metals, which include Cu, Zn, Mn, Fe, Pb and As, in the water. Pollution load index (PLI) values were above one (>1) which indicates progressive deterioration of the water quality. However, contamination factor (CF) values of Pb and Cu, ranging from 8.31 to 15.68 and from 5.5 to 28.05 respectively, show that the studied water remains under a strong impact by Pb and Cu. Considering the severity of the ecological risk (Er) for a single metal, the descending order of contaminants is Cu > Pb > Mn > Fe > Zn. In relation to the total ecological risk index (RI), water from the lake shows low to considerable ecological risk.
