Opis:
This study focuses on the variation in the growth and development parameters of seedlings and their survival in plantations in relation to the degree of soil degradation and seedling production method. Seedlings were planted on former agricultural land, industry damaged forest zones II and III, burnt areas, reclaimed sand mine excavations and industrial soils. The material used in the study comprised container−grown seedlings mycorrhized with the fungus Hebeloma crustuliniforme and Laccaria bicolor, seedlings not subjected to controlled mycorrhization and field−grown bare−root seedlings.

Opis:
The effectiveness of different peat-based substrates was compared for the propagation of two mountain tree species (silver fir and European beech). The experiment was set up in spring of 2006, and seedlings were grown in polystyrene multipots for 2 years. Four types of substrate were applied: (1) newly prepared 1:1 peat-sawdust mixture ; (2) a peat-sawdust mixture which had already been used for five production periods; (3) a peat substrate produced in the ‘Nêdza’ container nursery (Rudy Raciborskie Forest District), consisting of peat and perlite; (4) a peat substrate, as described for (3), with added mycorrhizal fungus Hebeloma crustuliniforme. After sowing, polystyrene multi-pots were placed in a transparent tent. During the autumns of 2006 and 2007, for both species and each substrate type, 25 seedlings were randomly selected for measurement of their above-ground height, root length, root collar diameter, above- and below-ground fresh weight. Growth of one-year old and two-year-old seedlings of both species differed depending on their substrate. The application of a mycorrhizal inoculum positively affected seedling establishment, since the best height growth and largest seedlings of both species were grown on substrate (4). The growth of one-year-old fir seedlings in the ‘old’ peat and sawdust mixture (2) was similar to those seedlings on the turf substrate (3). Root:shoot allocation differed among the substrates. In fir root:shoot allocation was approximately equivalent at 1:0.9, whereas for beech it was 1:2 in oneyear-old seedlings and 1:1.5 in two-year-old seedlings.

Opis:
Irregular seed crop in Betula pendula (Silver Birch) is a reason to create seed reserves, ensuring nursery production in years of crop failure. This study investigated the effects of seed moisture content and storage temperature on germinability and seedling emergence in container cultivation. Mature catkins were collected separately from 3 trees. The mixture of winged nuts and scales was dried to 3 levels of moisture content and stored at 3°C, –3°C and –10°C. After storage for 3, 5 and 6 years, the seeds were separated from scales and next dewinged and sorted in acetone into empty and filled seeds. Cleaned nuts were germinated in the Jacobsen germinator. Besides, to assess seedling emergence, seeds were sown on the surface of peat mixed with perlite, in multi-cell trays under a plastic tunnel. Significant differences in germinability were detected depending on the mother tree, seed moisture content and storage time. The viability of seeds stored at –10°C remained unchanged for 6 years regardless of moisture content (ca. 8–12%). Seeds stored at higher temperatures lost their germinability faster. An unexplained increase in seedling emergence was observed after extended seed storage at –10°C, in contrast to a gradual decrease in seedling emergence after extended storage at –3°C.

Opis:
This study examines the influence on growth parameters, in particular the morphological features of the root system, of 1-year-old European beech seedlings cultivated in containers with two different densities. The experiment was conducted in the container nursery in Skierdy (Forest District of Jabłonna) in spring 2011. After 10 months of cultivation in Hiko polyethylene containers, above- and below-ground parts of the seedlings were measured. The measurements of the root system were conducted with a scanner and the WinRHIZO software. No influence due to the seedling density on either shoot height or thickness was observed, but instead the research showed that different seedling densities affected the development of root systems. The mean root thickness and dry mass of the European beech seedlings were significantly higher at the lower density. The influence of seedling density on the development of root mass deserves special attention as it is the most important factor affecting future growth of the seedlings during cultivation. This tendency also suggests that the amount of nutrients allocated to shoot development may be higher in order to improve the efficiency of photosynthesis. At both densities, differences in biomass accumulation affected the root-toshoot ratio. In seedlings cultivated at the lower density, the increased dry root matter of the seedlings resulted in a significant increase in the root-to-shoot ratio. This may cause a potential growth advantage of these seedlings after they are planted and may thus result in a more productive cultivation.

Autorzy współpracując z polskimi producentami maszyn i urządzeń dla gospodarki leśnej, opracowali szereg nowych rozwiązań zwłaszcza z obszaru nasiennictwa i szkółkarstwa leśnego.
In cooperation with Polish producers of forest management machinery and equipment, the present authors have developed a number of novel solutions, especially in the field of seed production and forest nursery. The large-scale introduction of forest tree seedling cultivation based on the so-called French model, i.e. in foamed polystyrene containers, has many benefits, while the technological problem lies in the difficulty of extracting seedlings in order to plant them or store in a cold store. The present research and development project included measurement of the unit forces needed for root ball detachment as well as construction of a compact seedling squeezer.

Opis:
Quercus robur seedlings are very often infested by oak powdery mildew caused by Erysiphe alphitoides. This disease attacks primary leaves with high insolation. In our experiment seedling growth in different light conditions was observed. Seedlings were derived from intact seeds or from seeds where the distal ends of acorns were cut off. Acorns were sown in pots at four light conditions (2%, 8% and 30% light transmittance and in full sunlight). For half of the seedlings we reduced the influence of powdery mildew by using a fungicide. Height of seedlings, shoot dry mass and the degree of damage caused by Erysiphe alphitoides were measured. The highest damages were in full light conditions and the lowest in the 30% light treatment. The influence of acorn reduction on powdery mildew infection was not significant (p=0.0763), however, in the full light conditions the seedlings from cut acorns were ca. 30% less damaged. The cutting of acorns also alters the height of seedlings and shoot mass. The tallest seedlings were from cut seeds growing in the 30% light treatment. The influence of the fungicide was lowest in the 30% light treatment where the decrease in damage was only ca. 10%. For nursery practice we can say that oak seedling production from cut off acorns under 30% light transmittance should give the best results of seedling growth even without the fungicide application.

The article compares the impact of production technique, planting material, soil type and moisture on the growth of pine seedlings. The material used in the experiment comprised pines grown in containers to which controlled mycorrhization with the fungus Hebeloma crustuliniforme was applied, as well as pines that had not been mycorrhized. The seedlings were grown in pots on two types of substrate (forest and post−agricultural soil) varying in cohesiveness and fertility. Four moisture levels (20%, 30%, 40% and 50%) were adopted.
