    In Poland, the current percentage of vaccinated persons provides for appropriate protection against dissemination of contagious diseases, however, year by year, the number of children that are not vaccinated has been growing significantly, which can, in the future, result in an epidemic threat and in a recurrence of the diseases that are, at present, considered extinct. The growing number of unvaccinated children should be attributed to many parents’ fear of complications. That is why it is extremely important to raise awareness about the objectives of obligatory vaccinations and the consequences (including legal consequences) of non-compliance with this obligation.

    Opis:
    Vaccinations are the most effective prevention of contagious diseases. They are supposed to prevent from catching contagious diseases, as well as to develop resistance of the whole population, which provides protection also to those persons who due to medical contraindications could not have been vaccinated. However, in order to obtain effective protection against return of contagious diseases epidemics, it is necessary to maintain the high percentage of those vaccinated. That is why a trend towards not to vaccinating children, which has been growing everywhere in Europe, is alarming. The reasons behind this trend are parents’ fears that vaccinations can negatively affect the health and development of children.

    The aim of the article is to present the image of the care of infectiously ill in the light of the canonization process of St. Elizabeth of Hungary (1207-1231). The material under discussion includes testimonies made by the saint's spiritual director Conrad of Marburg and her four handmaids. The accounts made by direct observers of the duchess' life emphasize the variety of forms of her involvement in the care of lepers and those suffering from diseases that cause similar symptoms.

    Opis:
    The article presents the activity of the Jesuits during the epidemic of plague in the Rzeczpospolita during the Great Northern War. The author concentrates mainly on the Lithuanian province of the Society of Jesus, where the epidemic caused the highest number of deaths. Against the description of the structure of the personnel and the issue of the mortality rate among the monks prior to the outbreak of the epidemic, the author characterizes the variety of activities undertaken by the Jesuits. On the one hand, the aim of the Jesuits’ activity was to fulfill the mission of the Society, which consisted in providing spiritual and material help to fellow human beings. On the other hand, the aim was to protect the material and human resources of the Society. In the face of the epidemic most members of the Society left the college to seek shelter in one of the estates belonging to the Jesuits. Several Jesuit monks decided to stay to serve the sick monks and the inhabitants of the town who were unable to escape. According to the hierarchy of values of the Jesuits and the laudatory topic a appearing in the home chronicles, the death of those Jesuits was presented as the achievement of the highest good. The Jesuits paid a high price for their material and spiritual involvement - the consequences of the epidemic continued to be visible many years after the outbreak of the plague.

    Choroby zakaźne zwierząt stanowią duże niebezpieczeństwo nie tylko dla zwierząt, ale także dla ludzi. Jedną z najgroźniejszych chorób jest ptasia grypa. Przyczynia się do tego szybki sposób rozprzestrzeniania się wirusa H5N1, a także możliwość mutacji tego patogenu w formę mającą zdolność przenoszenia się z człowieka na człowieka. Do Polski ptasia grypa powróciła w grudniu 2007 roku. Spowodowała szkody wynoszące ponad 12 milionów złotych.
    Animal infectious diseases pose a great threat not only to animals but also to humans. One of the most dangerous diseases is avian influenza because of the rapid spread of H5N1 virus and a possibility of mutations of this pathogen into a form able to transmit from one person to another. In Poland the avian influenza returned in December 2007. It caused losses calculated at 12 million zlotys. A questionnaire was prepared within this study to present the risk posed by the avian influenza from human perspective.

    Opis:
    Transboundary animal diseases (TADs), are highly contagious and epidemic diseases that can spread extremely fast, irrespective of national borders and cause high animals death rates. They have serious socio-economic and public health consequences and they affect food and nutrition security, global livestock production and seriously disrupt or inhibit livestock and livestock products trade at either national or international level. Globalization, climate changes and land encroachment contribute to outbreaks of devastating animal diseases. TADs include also diseases transmissible to humans (brucellosis, bovine spongiform encephalopathy, MERS, Nipah), and high-impact animal diseases (peste des petites ruminants, African swine fever, Newcastle disease, Schmallenberg disease, bluetongue, African horse sickness). There are evidences suggesting that threats from TADs have increased over the years. The risk of animal disease outbreaks is likely to further grow in future as the higher incomes in developing countries will generate growing humans demand for animal protein and animal derived products. This article provides the experience gained in the control and management of important transboundary diseases along with the successes, constraints, limitations and future research needs for developing better control approaches.
