The paper presents two methods of solving the problem of the dynamics of a frame structure with viscoelastic bonds in nodes. In the first approach, known from the literature, two-node beam elements with three degrees of freedom in each node were used. Exact shape functions were adopted to obtain a stiffness matrix, a consistent mass matrix and a damping matrix for the beam element. These matrices were then modified by introducing rotational viscoelastic constraints at the boundary nodes. In the second approach, a new method of modelling viscoelastic bonds in frame structures was proposed. It consists in removing rigid bonds between elements along selected degrees of freedom and replacing them with a new, additional element with viscoelastic properties. This approach allows the use of any rheological model to describe viscoelastic bonds (i.e. an additional element) without the need to create a new modified finite element. In this work, an advanced rheological model, i.e. the fractional Kelvin model, was used to describe rotational viscoelastic bonds. The use of fractional derivatives to describe the damping properties reduces the number of parameters needed in the model, but leads to a non-linear eigenproblem. In order to solve the eigenvalue problem, the continuation method was used, and the dynamic characteristics of the structure were determined on the basis of the calculated eigenvalues. Selected structures with viscoelastic nodes were analyzed and the obtained results confirm the effectiveness of the proposed approach.

Scientists do a variety of laboratory tests on timber and wood-containing composites. An example is adhesively bonded joints in such materials. Despite a wide range of empirical research, consideration of adhesive layers or surfaces in a structure is commonly done in a very simplified manner - they are often modelled as a perfect connection between adherends. It means the cohesive stiffness and opportunity of progressive delamination are neglected. This may lead to an overestimation of the structural load-bearing capacity. The article presents wood-wood and wood-CFRP adhesively bonded joints’ investigations, based on own experimental testing technique (covering a current one as a Digital Image Correlation), analytical double-lap model for adhesives and advanced numerical Finite Element approach. The aim of the paper is to give the guidelines for complex, non-linear modelling of connections in glue laminated timber and wood-CFRP composites that can be utilised for many purposes.

The bolted joint is widely used in heavy-duty CNC machine tools, which has huge influence on working precision and overall stiffness of CNC machine. The process parameters of group bolt assembly directly affect the stiffness of the connected parts. The dynamic model of bolted joints is established based on the fractal theory, and the overall stiffness of joint surface is calculated. In order to improve the total stiffness of bolted assembly, an improved particle swarm optimization algorithm with combination of time-varying weights and contraction factor is proposed. The input parameters are preloading of bolts, fractal dimension, roughness, and object thickness. The main goal is to maximize the global rigidity. The optimization results show that improved algorithm has better convergence, faster calculation speed, preferable results, and higher optimization performance than standard particle swarm optimization algorithm. Moreover, the global rigidity optimization is achieved.

Everyday spaces represent central platforms that provide opportunities for encounters marked by ethnic and cultural diversity, where transformations can be negotiated that rethink living together. The significance of these ‘third places’ has been extensively researched. Yet, some spaces such as public libraries continue to be largely overlooked by geographers. Public libraries also remain under-appreciated within wider society despite their obvious social functions. Central here is that public libraries can be understood as dynamic and ‘lived spaces’ that enable the emergence of transient connections and relationships. Such spaces are increasingly sparse within modern cities. This paper explores the potential of everyday spaces of encounter, specifically public libraries, to facilitate the unfolding of ‘light’ connections and relationships, nurturing more inclusive forms of urban togetherness and belonging in multi-ethnic societies and the significance that people attribute to these often mundane encounters and micro connections. In so doing, this paper combines findings from two research projects that investigate mixed or intercultural encounters in public libraries in Bremen (Germany) and Glasgow (Scotland).

The article is devoted to the study of modern problematic issues of causation in criminal law. These issues include, in particular, the issue of relevance of causation in criminal law itself, and the specifics of manifestations of relevance of causation in criminal law. The article notes that the purpose of scientific research is to identify and analyze the characteristics and criteria of relevant causation. The methods of the presented study include dialectical, systemic-structural, logical, etc. The results of the study are summarized in a number of important provisions. The author emphasizes the importance of the study of causation in criminal law as a formal and legal one, which is related to the study of causation as relevant, meeting the requirements and solving the problems of modern criminal law. The article notes that the characterization of causation in criminal law should not be limited to the connection between an act and socially dangerous consequences, since causality expressed by causation is manifested in a combination of components which are part of the content of various criminal law institutions. The article examines some characteristics of the relevance of causation in criminal law. Attention is drawn to the importance of legal and technical reflection of causation in criminal law as a condition for the relevance of causation. The article notes that the formalization of causation is the basis for considering such a connection as relevant (meeting legal requirements). The author examines institutional and inter-institutional manifestations of causation in criminal law. Furthermore, the author examines the causal manifestations which combine a criminal offense (in particular, a crime) and the legal consequences provided for by criminal law in relation to the subject who committed the offense. The article examines the peculiarities of causation in relation to certain criminal law institutions. The main conclusions of the study are the following: the need to clarify the criteria of relevant causation, the statement of relevant causation in criminal law within certain criminal law institutions, the need to consider causation in a broader criminal law context, and not only within the corpus delicti, etc.

The aim of this article is to present a method of assessing the load-bearing capacity of prefabricated large-panel buildings built after the 1950s. Since the main problem in the existing large-panel system buildings is the actual condition of the joints between the panels, it was decided to investigate their impact on the behavior of the entire structure. Therefore, analyses were carried out in which the influence of the adopted connection models on the static and dynamic behavior of the building was examined. Several calculation models of the building were analyzed using three different types of connections between wall and ceiling panels: rigid, elastic and hinged, each representing a distinct state of the actual connection. The criterion used for the comparisons were the values of extreme internal forces and static displacements as well as the dynamic responses of the structure. The parameters that have the greatest influence on the static and dynamic analyses’ results are described and commented on in the conclusion. The analyses’ results are supported by data obtained from source materials: inspection reports, case studies and technical documents. The research helps to understand better the static and dynamic behavior of a building erected using a system of prefabricated large-size panels and to determine the main parameters of the structure influencing this behavior. However, as a result of the research, it was found that changes in the state of panel connection in large-panel system buildings do not have such a significant impact on the overall static and dynamic responses of the structure as initially expected.

On the connection with the place in the works of Jerzy Pilch”, the subject of the connection of the author and his protagonists with the place was raised. Some chosen aspects of this relevant issue have been introduced by the author of „Many demons”. The attitude of the characters and narrators to the place has been analysed through such issues as faith, emotions, senses, weather and topography. The most important thing is treating the place as a pattern, to which the writer refers many events, comments, observations, thoughts and characters. The place imagined by the writer is dynamic, changeable, ambiguous and multiple. Although the literary landscapes of the Wisla have common characteristics, they are characterized by many differences and variants, beginning with names and ending with details. The awareness of the Wisla creation imagined in the works of Jerzy Pilch is fundamental and deserves attention.

This paper proposes a new concept and algorithm to transfer brittle and arbitrary load-slip curves into an effective shear resistance suitable for Eurocode 4. This algorithm is specifically for demountable shear connections of composite beams which do not exhibit ductile behaviour as required in EC4. The algorithm is validated with numerical finite element models which have been calibrated against experimental results. The algorithm extends the scope of the code to cover demountable shear connections: it allows the EC4 (EN 1994-1-1) rules remain applicable for the evaluation of the plastic bending resistance of composite beams with partial shear connection.

Progress and achievements in the field of medical knowledge, technical sciences and materials engineering related to the broadly understood aspects of human health and life have intensively influenced the development of technologies used in the production of permanent prosthetic restorations. Ceramic materials and metal alloys with a wide range of applications in the manufacture of prosthetic restorations deserve special attention. The combination of the positive features of these two materials, with different chemical and physical properties, made it possible to obtain prosthetic structures that meet the strength and aesthetic requirements. Despite the dynamic development of more and more new techniques, devices and materials for the production of prosthetic restorations, metal-ceramic constructions are still a reliable and dominant method of making dental restorations of permanent crowns and bridges. Their quality and durability is largely influenced by the method of connecting the ceramic facing material with the metal base. There are three types of connections: physical, mechanical and chemical. The basis of the physical connection is the selection of appropriate thermal expansion coefficients of both materials. It is related to the compressive stresses occurring during the cooling of the fired ceramics. The formation of depressions on the surface of the framework causes retention and microretention, thanks to which the surface of ceramic-metal adhesion increases. The chemical connection ensures the formation of a controlled oxide layer on the metal base due to the content of elements such as gallium, indium or iron.

Contains basic information on imperfections and stiffness characteristics of the butt nodes. The course of creating the computational model and the results of the FEM analysis are shown.

Opis:
Air conditioning systems in vehicles require long-term reliability during their entire service life. Especially, a good sealing function is needed for the prevention of coolant leaking. Unfortunately, in specific cases, after a particular time, screw connections of the air conditioning circuit lose their tightness, and the coolant starts to leak. Therefore, this paper focuses on the analysis and design optimisation of screw connections. We used the finite element method for describing the sealing, screw and disc spring behaviour. Then, we proposed a new design of the disc spring to obtain the proper force-deformation characteristics of the connection and ensure the tightness of the screw connection.

Under an edge coloring (not necessarily proper), a rainbow path is a path whose edge colors are all distinct. The d-local rainbow connection number lrcd(G) (respectively, d-local strong rainbow connection number lsrcd(G)) is the smallest number of colors needed to color the edges of G such that any two vertices with distance at most d can be connected by a rainbow path (respectively, rainbow geodesic). This generalizes rainbow connection numbers, which are the special case d = diam(G). We discuss some bounds and exact values. Steel-wood-steel connection is widely seen in many applications, such as timber structures. The stiffness of steel-wood-steel connection loaded parallel to grain for softwoods originated from Malaysia was investigated in this study. Numerical models have been developed in ABAQUS to study the stiffness connection. Softwoods of Damar Minyak and Podo have been selected in this analysis. The comprehensive study focused on the effect of bolt configurations on stiffness. Numerical analysis is carried out and the developed model has been validated with the previous study. Further investigations have been made by using the validated model. From this model, numerical analysis of the stiffness values have been made for various bolt configurations, including bolt diameter, end distance, bolt spacing, number of rows and bolts and edge distance. The result shows that the stiffness of bolted timber connections for softwood depends on the bolt diameter, number of rows and bolts, end distance and edge distance. Based on the result, stiffness increased as the diameter of the bolt, end distance, number of rows and bolts and edge distance increased. It is also discovered that the stiffness equation in Eurocode 5 (EC5) is inadequate as the equation only considered parameters which are wood density and bolt diameter. Other connection parameters such as geometry are not considered in the EC5 equation.

The presented paper deals with the five-phase induction motor (IM) having pentagon connected stator winding, which is working under one phase supply failure. Computation of the motor electromagnetic quantities was made using the space vector theory in the complex plane. Analysis is done assuming, the motor is supplied by a pulse width modulation (PWM) controlled inverter with sufficiently high modulation frequency. Only the first stator voltage harmonics is taken into consideration. On the base of measured IM parameters, trajectories of stator and rotor current space vectors were investigated. On their basis, the motor electromagnetic torque ripple waveform for failure supply mode is derived. Finally a possibility to reduce torque ripple in failure state is shown.
W artykule opisano pięciofazowy silnik indukcyjny (SI) o pięciokątnym uzwojeniu stojana, pracujący przy jednofazowym zaniku zasilania. Obliczenia wielkości elektromagnetycznych silnika przeprowadzono z wykorzystaniem teorii wektorów przestrzennych na płaszczyźnie zespolonej. Analizę przeprowadzono przy założeniu, że silnik jest zasilany z falownika sterowanego modulacją szerokości impulsów (PWM) o odpowiednio wysokiej częstotliwości modulacji. Uwzględniono tylko pierwszą harmoniczną napięcia stojana. Na podstawie zmierzonych parametrów SI zbadano trajektorie wektorów przestrzeni prądów stojana i wirnika. Na ich podstawie wyznaczono przebieg tętnień momentu elektromagnetycznego silnika dla trybu zasilania awaryjnego. Na zakończenie przedstawiono możliwość redukcji tętnień momentu w stanie awaryjnym.

This study aimed to diagnose, describe, and compare the use of social media to build and sustain interpersonal contacts and to refer to the level of interpersonal competences among students of pedagogical courses in two selected universities in Poland and Portugal. The studies were quantitative and employed the Interpersonal Competence Questionnaire by D. Buhrmester, W. Furman, M.T. Wittenberg and H.T. Reis, as well as the author’s own questionnaire. The analyses show that social media play a major role in building interpersonal relationships for Polish and Portuguese students in areas such as establishing new contacts, maintaining offline relationships, mutual learning and self-presentation. Non-face-to-face relations may interfere with establishing contact face to face. The analyses also show that the level of interpersonal competences among the respondents in terms of the skills and readiness to provide emotional support to others is differentiated by the way and scope of social media usage in the area under consideration. It can be assumed that in the group of respondents, the more they are willing and able to provide emotional support to others, the more effective and balanced way they use social media in building interpersonal relationships.
