The article presents a contrastive analysis of conjunctions in Spanish and Polish languages. It shows the main differences related primarily to the quantity of the conjunctions’ classifications and the criteria responsible for their formal, syntactic and functional divisions. Also it analyzes the classification of coordinating and subordinating conjunctions in both languages and presents new proposals of their division deriving from the Polish grammar.

The aim of the present article is to point to certain similarities and certain differences occurring between Latin and Polish causal conjunctions that may show the relations that there are between the parataxis and the hypotaxis in a little different light. The difference between Latin and Polish causal conjunctions consists in the fact that all Polish ones are hypotactic, whereas in Latin, besides hypotactic also such causal conjunctions occur that are considered as paratactic. On the other hand, the similarity consists in the fact that both in Latin and in Polish there are causal conjunctions connecting clauses, that may be used in whichever order, as well as ones that, when they occur along with a causal clause, have to appear in the second place. Since in Latin such a difference occurs exactly between paratactic and hypotactic conjunctions, maybe the limitations as to the order, or a lack of them, could be used as a criterion that can be useful for distinguishing paratactic causal clauses from hypotactic ones.

The paper deals with the syntactic features of textual connectives in the contemporary French and Czech language. The study is a comparative one. The argumentative connectives are lexical units that participate on the text structuration and mark the argumentative orientation of the constituents they connect. Being defined on the basis of textual criteria, the units we include to the category issue from different morphosyntactic classes – conjunctions of subordination, conjunctions of coordination, adverbials. Although these classes present in French and in Czech some different distributional features, their accumulation in one clause is ruled by the same principles that operate on the level of the logical form.

This paper aims at exploring the role of cohesion in persuading listeners through answering the following questions; what types of grammatical cohesive relations are displayed and what is their frequency of occurrence in the sampled text? and how does cohesion contribute to the creation and understanding of a text? A program for corpus analysis called (AntConc Tutorial (Ver. 3.2.4) developed by Laurence Anthony (Anthony, L., 2004) is used for analyzing the sample of this study which will be the speech of the Singaporean prime minister, Lee Hsien Loong, on the COVID-19 ‘New Normal’, on 31 May 2021 (Appendix A). The study devotes attention to the speech of the Singaporean prime minister on this occasion due to the importance of this event which occupied the world. This paper depends on Halliday and Hasan’s (1976) taxonomy of cohesive devices to analyze data.

Il contributo analizza siccome nel passaggio dall’originario valore comparativo avverbiale, tuttora possibile, a quello di congiunzione che introduce una comparativa, documentato ab antiquo, a quello di congiunzione causale, ormai prevalente nell’uso corrente, specie nel parlato e nel trasmesso, ma non unanimemente considerato standard. Si propone quindi, sulla scia dei lavori di Mazzoleni (2007; 2012), un’analisi in diacronia del siccome, in cui, accanto alle indicazioni tratte da opere lessicografiche del passato (le edizioni del Vocabolario della Crusca, Tommaseo & Bellini, ma anche Tommaseo 1840; Ugolini 1848) e del presente (Battaglia 1961-2002, Sabatini & Coletti 1997, De Mauro 1999), nonché da grammatiche antiche (Soave 1771; Fornaciari 1881) e moderne (Battaglia & Pernicone 1968²; Serianni 1989), si analizzerà la documentazione tratta da corpora diacronici dell’italiano scritto, che potrà attestare i diversi valori di siccome nel corso del tempo. Studiando un caso di Grammaticalizzazione, si cercherà di offrire spunti di riflessione sull’evoluzione della norma grammaticale e sulle variazioni nell’uso, nel quadro complesso della storia dell’italiano.
The study considers siccome from an etymological point of view and observes the morphosyntactic and semantic value of this key word in written Italian through a diachronic perspective. It discusses the evolution of siccome from being a comparative adverb, to a comparative conjunction, to a causal conjunction, and how its actual meaning is not considered standard by everyone, although currently it is used in spoken and transmitted Italian. On the basis of Mazzoleni’s studies, the essay analyses siccome through the old lexicographies (the various editions of the Vocabolario della Crusca; Tommaseo and Bellini; Tommaseo, 1840; Ugolini, 1848) and the modern dictionaries (Battaglia, 1961–2002; Sabatini and Coletti, 1997; De Mauro, 1999); also, it takes into account older and more recent grammars (Soave, 1771; Fornaciari, 1881; Battaglia and Pernicone, 1968; Serianni, 1989) as well as several documents taken from various diachronic corpora of written Italian, in an attempt to show every single meaning of siccome over time. By studying this case of grammaticalisation, I offer some insights and cues about the history of Italian grammar, about its variations in use, and how this affected the linguistic norm throughout the complex history of the Italian language.

Punktem wyjścia artykułu jest normatywne przekonanie, że niektóre spójniki, jak bo i ale, są właściwe mowie i w niej należy je stosować, a niektóre, jak ponieważ i lecz, są właściwe dziełom pisanym. Przekonanie to sprawdzono na materiale, na który złożyły się losowo dobrane krótkie teksty z filozofii, językoznawstwa, literaturoznawstwa, psychologii, publicystyki, krytyki literackiej oraz teksty popularnonaukowe o języku. Wyjściowe mniemanie okazało się mylne: spójniki bo i ale występują w przejrzanych tekstach o wiele częściej niż ponieważ i lecz. Postępowanie badawcze miało kilka etapów: 1) identyfikacja zastanych przekonań, 2) określenie wątpliwości, ustalenie odmiennego punktu widzenia, 3) zgromadzenie materiału, 4) badanie, 5) wyniki, 6) interpretacja, 7) wnioski. Autor sądzi, że schemat takiego postępowania badawczego nadaje się do stosowania na lekcjach języka polskiego.
The starting point of the article is the normative belief that some conjunctions, such as because (bo) and but (ale), are typical of speech and should be used in it, and others, such as because (ponieważ) and yet (lecz), are appropriate for written works. They were tested on the material of randomly selected short texts from philosophy, linguistics, literary studies, psychology, journalism, literary criticism and popular science texts about language. The research procedure had several stages: 1) beliefs, 2) doubts, different points of view, 3) material assembly, 4) study, 5) results, 6) interpretation, 7) conclusions. The author believes that this scheme is suitable for use in Polish lessons. The initial idea turned out to be wrong: conjunctions because (bo) and but (ale) occur in the reviewed texts much more often than because (ponieważ) and yet (lecz).

L’obiettivo del presente contributo è esaminare la possibilità di utilizzare i corpora nell’insegnamento di argomenti di ordine grammaticale ad apprendenti di italiano LS. Il contributo presenta una proposta didattica basata su corpora e sperimentata con studenti di italiano dell’Università “Ss. Cirillo e Metodio” di Skopje nell’anno accademico 2016/2017. L’ipotesi alla base della proposta didattica è che l’uso diretto e guidato di corpora possa sensibilizzare gli studenti alla problematicità dell’argomento grammaticale trattato, ma anche fornire loro degli strumenti e percorsi per esplorare la lingua in modo autonomo. La prima parte del contributo esamina l’uso dei corpora nell’insegnamento delle lingue straniere con riferimento particolare all’uso dei corpora nell’contesto dell’italiano LS. La parte centrale presenta le attività didattiche proposte sulle frasi concessive e il contesto in cui sono state sperimentate. L’ultima parte verte sulle considerazioni degli studenti riportate in un questionario da una parte e sulle potenzialità e i limiti di questo approccio didattico dall’altra.
The aim of the paper is to explore the possibility of using corpora in teaching grammar to learners of Italian as a foreign language. The paper presents corpus-based activities used with students of Italian at the Saints Cyril and Methodius University in Skopje in 2016/2017. The hypothesis underlying this teaching approach is that direct and guided use of corpora can raise students’ awareness of the complexity of the phenomena observed as well as present them with resources and methods to explore the language more autonomously. The first part of the paper investigates the use of corpora in language teaching, with particular attention to the use of these resources in teaching Italian as a foreign language. The main section describes the activities on concessives and the context in which they have been used. The final part reports on the observations of the students and addresses the advantages and disadvantages of this teaching approach.
