Opis:
The paper presents the possibility of the usage of the concfocal microscope for define the type of tribological wear present during the technical dry friction on the testing machine of the pin-on-disc T-01M. The pin was a remelted high-speed steel and the disc was made from sintered carbides. The surface layer of the high-speed steel was remelted with the electric arc with different parameters. The intensity of the electric arc current was changed, the scanning speed and the single, overlapping remeltings were used. On the basis of the 3D, 2D view of the surface friction of the pin (made from the remelted high-speed steel), disc (made from the sintered carbides) and the surface roughness profile run along the marked line, the presence of the abrasive wear can be defined with the description of the elementary wear processes due to the abrasive and/or adhesive wear.

Opis:
W pracy przedstawiono zagadnienia związane z pomiarami topografii powie- rzchni narzędzi ściernych stosowanych w procesach mikro- i nanoobróbki. Ocenie poddano zestaw elastycznych foliowych taśm mikrościernych z ziarnem diamentowym o nominalnym wymiarze od 0,5 Μm do 30 Μm. W bada- niach wykorzystano zaawansowany laserowy mikroskop pomiarowy LEXT OLS4000 firmy Olympus. Analiza uzyskanych danych pomiarowych prowadzona była w dostarczonym przez producenta dedykowanym oprogramowaniu LEXT 5.0. Uzyskane rezultaty badań potwierdziły dużą użyteczność i szerokie możliwości pomiarowe wykorzystywanego mikroskopu w badaniach topografii powierzchni tego typu narzędzi ściernych.
In modern industry it is often required to improve the cleanliness and finish quality of surfaces of precise manufacturing parts. For this purpose, producers apply microfinishing [1], which permits to obtain the better quality than that obtained by different conventional finishing processes. This influences significantly the maintenance of proper operating parameters by manufactured parts. Microfinishing process is realized by means of various types of abrasive tools such as microfinishing films [2]. Manufacturers often make available incomplete or incorrect technical data concerning the stereometric characteristics of produced abrasive tools. This situation complicates the proper selection of the optimal machining parameters. In this case it is necessary to conduct investigations of the surface topography of the microfinishing film with use of precise measuring methods. This paper proves that such investigations can be carried out with use of advanced microscopy methods such as nonlocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM) [4]. During experimental investigations a set of IDLF (ImperialŽ Diamond Lapping Film) films produced by 3M was assessed. IDLF combine diamond grains (nominal diameter from 0.5 Μm to 30 Μm), a resin bonding system and a uniform polyester film. The measurement of films were taken by a 3D measuring laser microscope LEXT OLS4000 produced by Olympus (Fig. 1.). Analysis of the obtained data was carried out in the dedicated LEXT 5.0. software provided by a system producer. The obtained results of investigations (Fig. 2.) confirmed the high usefulness and wide range of measurement of the used microscope in assessment of the surface topography of these types of abrasive tools.

Opis:
In-situ study on the high-temperature fracture behaviour of 347 stainless steel was carried out by using a confocal laser scanning microscope (CLSM). The welding microstructures of the 347 stainless steel were simulated by subjecting the steel specimen to solution and aging treatments. Undissolved NbC carbides were present within grains after solution treatment, and M23C6 carbides were preferentially formed at grain boundaries after subsequent aging treatment. The M23C6 carbides formed at grain boundaries worked as stress concentration sites and thus generated larger cracks during high-temperature tensile testing. In addition, grain boundary embrittlement was found to be a dominant mechanism for the high-temperature fracture of the 347 stainless steel because vacancy diffusion in the Cr-depleted zones enhances intergranular fracture due to the precipitation of M23C6 carbides at grain boundaries.

Opis:
W niniejszej pracy przeanalizowano przydatność konfokalnego laserowego mikroskopu skaningowego LEXT OLS3100 firmy OLYMPUS do oceny stereometrii powierzchni współpracujących elementów. Przedstawiono charakterystykę tego mikroskopu oraz dokonano analizy przykładowych struktur powierzchni po badaniach tribologicznych. Uzyskane obrazy powierzchni z konfokalnego laserowego mikroskopu skaningowego porównano z obrazami uzyskanymi z innych urządzeń umożliwiających rejestrowanie stereometrii powierzchni w postaci obrazów badanych powierzchni. Otrzymane obrazy struktur powierzchni z wykorzystaniem konfokalnego laserowego mikroskopu skaningowego okazały się przydatne w ocenie rzeźby powierzchni oraz w analizie zmian podczas transformacji warstwy wierzchniej.
In presented paper usability of confocal laser scanning microscope LEPT OLS3100, made by OLYMPUS, to estimation of surface stereometry of cooperated elements is analysed. Characteristic of such microscope is presented, analyse of exemplary surface structures after tribologic tests was made too. Obtained from confocal laser scanning microscope pictures there were compared with others, obtained from measurement devices which are able to record of view of tested surfaces. It seems that recorded by confocal microscop pictures are useful in sculpture surface assessment and in analyse of changes during surface layer transformation.

The article presents the visual effects of solar and UV-VIS radiation with appropriate intensity and aging time on three types of cellulose foils with and without overprint. The print was made with biodegradable AquaBio and compostable GeckoFrontalEco inks. Photographs of the film surface were taken using a confocal and scanning microscope, and their profile was determined using a profilometer.

In this study, a submicron-particles-arrayed optical storage disk was fabricated by the spin coating method. Moreover, we have formed a multi-valued pit by irradiating linearly polarized laser beams at multiple angles (0° and 90°). The optical setup has the semiconductor laser (λ = 637 nm) for reconstructing and the SHG-YVO4 laser (λ = 532 nm) for recording. The optical setup measured the submicron-particles-arrayed optical storage as a confocal image by 2D scanning with a motorized stage.

The article presents the influence of measuring methods of surfaces topography evaluation. Surface topography was measured using a mechanical, contact method by Hommel Tester T-8000-R60 profilometer (Gdynia Maritime University) and using the contactless, optical method by Olympus Lext OLS4100 Confocal Laser Scanning Microscope (Gdynia Maritime University). A pattern of roughness grade 4 sample was studied (standards PN-58/M-02425 (Ra=10 μm, Rz=40 μm)). Seven measurements were made on each of devices, resulting in a more accurate stereometric image of the sample surface. The area of the test was 1.5×1.5 mm. The radius of the edge of the blade imaging the surface used in the contact method was 2 μm. In the case of the optical method, the test sample surface was subjected to a laser light 405 nm long. This article describes the principle of used measuring instrument operation and their advantages and disadvantages. The results and descriptive statistics (Mann–Whitney U test, Kolmogorov–Smirnov test) of surface altitude parameters, such as Sa, Sp, Sq, Sv, Sz. There were statistically significant differences in topography values between measurements by T-8000 profilometer and Confocal Laser Scanning Microscope. It was noted that the values of the parameters Sa, Sq are higher with the T-8000 profilometer as a measuring device. The parameters Sp, Sv, Sz have a higher value, when measured on a Confocal Laser Scanning Microscope.

The process of vitrification of the cumulus-oocyte complex (COCs) often results in cold shock. When warming, heat shock occurs which can disrupt the balance of intracellular calcium (Ca2+) intensity. Drastic changes in temperature cause Reactive Oxygen Species (ROS), affecting changes on Ca2+ in COCs. The role of calcium is needed for oocyte activation in the fertilization process. The purpose of this study was to measure the expression of Ca2+ and the intensity of Ca2+ in COCs after vitrification. The study was divided into 2 groups, the control group (C) of fresh COCs, and the treatment group (T) of COCs after vitrification. After vitrification for 24 hours, then thawing, the expression of Ca2+ was examined using the Immunocytochemistry (ICC) method and the intensity of calcium (Ca2+) with a Confocal Laser Scanning Microscope (CLSM). The research data obtained were analyzed statistically by T-Test. The results showed that the expression of Ca2+ in the control group (12.00±0.00) was different from the treatment group (0.35±0.79). The intensity of Ca2+ in the control group (1059.43±489.59) was different from the treatment group (568.21±84.31). The conclusion of this study is that cryopreservation affects calcium in COCs; there were differences in the expression and the intensity of Ca2+ between fresh COCs and COCs after vitrification. Ca2+ intensity of COCs after vitrification was concentrated in the nucleus, while in fresh COCs it was concentrated in the cytoplasm.

Opis:
Wear of dental materials used for permanent dental fillings has a significant impact on their lifetime. Wear products generated during chewing process involving direct tribological contact between a composite and tooth enamel can cause damage not only to enamel itself but also to the entire tooth structure thus affecting the patient’s the health. It is essential therefore to assess the process of wear rates as well as the usefulness and effectiveness of the method used to measure these values. As there are a number of different methods used to quantify the loss of dental materials subjected to friction, eg.: scanning digital 3D models of dental casts, confocal microscope scanning or profilographometer measurements, the authors chose to analyze two selected research methods using confocal microscopy and profilographometer to assess their effectiveness. Two commercially available composite dental materials, i.e. ES and FFE previously subjected to friction tests in contact with human dental enamel, were used for the analysis.

Purpose: The aim of this work is to characterize the surface geometry of the orthodontic archiwire and their influence of the pitting corrosion resistance and bacterial adhesion. Design/methodology/approach: In the paper, the results of the SEM/EDS analysis and microscopic observation of the samples surface and analysis of geometrical structure with the use Atomic Force Microscope (AFM) and Confocal Microscopy were presented as well as the pitting corrosion test and surface roughness and microhardness measurements were performed. Additionally the microbiological study after bacterial breeding with the use Scanning Electron Microscope was carried out. Findings: In the basis of the investigation, it can be concluded that the surface geometry of archwire has a significant impact on their pitting corrosion resistance in artificial saliva solution and on the bacterial adhesion. The obtained results show satisfactory properties and surface geometry of the tested orthodontic wires for use in the human oral environment. Research limitations/implications: In the future, it is planned to extend the research with physicochemical properties and the influence of oral hygiene products on the corrosive behaviour of the material. Limitations in the conducted tests refer to archwire design – a small diameter making measurements difficult. Practical implications: The oral environment is an extremely aggressive corrosive environment. The orthodontic elements should have very good corrosion resistance and biocompatibility. The focus should be on continuously improving orthodontic wires in terms of material quality and topography of its surface topography. Originality/value: The research is conducted in the field of biomedical engineering, which is part of material engineering and is used for the field of dentistry and microbiology.
