The paper presents the studies on development of a simplified electrothermal method of measuring the soil thermal conductivity, that may be used directly in the field. A measurement system has been designed and built, that is connected to measuring sensors located in the examined soil. Two types of sensors, i.e. active and passive ones were used. The passive sensors were provided with thermistors used for temperature measurement, while the active one, apart from the thermistor, was provided with a heating element of resistance type. The study has shown that the proposed method, consisting in measuring the steady heat conduction between the measuring sensor and soil, allows to determine the value of the soil thermal conductivity with satisfying accuracy. Moreover, the method is conducive to significantly smaller disturbance of the soil structure, being a reason of measurement errors occurring while using traditional methods. Mathematical processing of the research results has been carried out with the help of STATISTICA software.

The presented work is focused on the food thermal characteristics calculation methods (heat conductivity coefficient and thermal diffusivity coefficient a). Thermal characteristics of food are important in food industry and define the intensiveness of technological processes of food refrigeration and thermal treatment, energy consumption for their realization and technological equipment production rate. They are also needed for the building and validation of mathematical models of heat transfer in food products which are useful in the design and optimisation of freezing, heating, cooking and cooling pro-cesses and equipment. It is not easy to define the food thermal characteristics. Difficulties arise from their heterogeneity, high labour consumption and complexity of experimental sets. Methods for experimental determination of heat conductivity coefficient and thermal diffusivity coefficient a based on the regular method mode require the α → ∞ condition, which is the case of high speed of the environment which flows around the test sample, as in the case of boiling or condensing. Using the method presented in this article it is possible to determine the heat conductivity and thermal diffusivity coefficient a even in the absence of the condition α → ∞.
W pracy opisano metodę pozwalającą na obliczeniowe wyznaczenie charakterystyk cieplnych produktów spożywczych – współczynnika przewodzenia ciepłaoraz współczynnika wyrównania temperatury (dyfuzyjności cieplnej) a. Współczynniki te wpływają na przebieg procesów obróbki termicznej produktów, a także na zużycie energii i produktywność urządzeń technologicznych. Znajomość tych współczynników jest konieczna do tworzenia modeli matematycznych wymiany ciepła w produktach spożywczych, użytecznych w projektowaniu i optymalizacji procesów i urządzeń do mrożenia, ogrzewania, gotowania czy schładzania produktów. Określenie właściwości cieplnych żywności nie jest łatwe. Trudności wynikają z różnorodności produktów spożywczych, pracochłonności i złożoności stanowisk badawczych. Sposoby eksperymentalnego wyznaczania ww. współczynników oparte na metodzie stanu uporządkowane-go wymagają spełnienia warunku α→∞, co ma miejsce w przypadku dużych prędkości środowiska omywającego badaną próbkę, przy gotowaniu lub kondensacji. Za pomocą przedstawionej w pracy metody możliwe jest wyznaczenie współczynnika przewodzenia ciepła i współczynnika dyfuzyjności cieplnej a nawet w przypadku braku spełnienia warunku α→∞.

Solid electrolytes based on sodium cryolite are present in aluminium electrolysers as frozen crystals formed on the side walls of the carbon lining (side ledge). Their main task is to protect the lining from the effect of liquid electrolyte and ensure temperature stabilization during the process of electrolysis. On the other hand, being electrically conductive, they can reduce current efficiency. In this study, the value of the electronic component of the total conductivity of the solidified electrolytes of different compositions was determined. It was found that the highest electronic conductivity is exhibited by electrolytes containing both aluminium and calcium fluoride. However, the electronic component of the total conductivity is not high, as it only reaches 0.1–2.3 mS/cm. Its share in the total conductivity of the solid multi-component electrolytes varies and, depending on their composition, is within a range of 1–10%.
Stałe elektrolity na bazie kriolitu sodowego są obecne w elektrolizerach do produkcji aluminium jako wykrystalizowane na bocznych ścianach wyłożeniach węglowego garnisaże. Ich głównym zadaniem jest ochrona węglowego wyłożenia przed działaniem ciekłego elektrolitu i stabilizacja temperatury procesu elektrolizy. Z drugiej strony mogą być przyczyną spadku wydajności prądowej, gdyż przewodzą prąd elektryczny. W pracy wyznaczono wielkość składowej elektronowej całkowitego przewodnictwa zakrzepłych elektrolitów o różnym składzie. Stwierdzono, że najwyższe przewodnictwo elektronowe wykazują elektrolity zawierające jednocześnie fluorek glinu i wapnia. Składowa elektronowa całkowitego przewodnictwa nie jest jednak wysoka i osiąga wartości rzędu 0,1–2,3 mS/cm. Jej udział w całkowitym przewodnictwie stałych elektrolitów wieloskładnikowych waha się, w zależności od ich składów, od 1 do 10%.

The aim of this study was to develop a preparation method of porous chitosan structures, in the electrolysis of the chitosan solution in acetic acid. Chitosan in aqueous acetic acid is a polyelectrolyte. During the constant flow of electric current through this system, pure chitosan begins to accumulate on an anode, in the form of porous hydrogel layers. The addition of hydroxyapatite (HAp) to the electrolyte enhances the process and allows for obtaining spatially arranged complex structures of chitosan.

The fast development of low-temperature geothermal energy affects the search for newer and newer solutions and materials used in the construction of borehole heat exchangers. One of the most important factors affecting the correct operation of heat pump systems with borehole heat exchangers is appropriately selected solidified grout. Solidifies grout has to be characterized by the highest thermal conductivity and good sealing borehole heat exchangers. The paper will present the impact of graphite on the thermal conductivity of solidified grout.

In this paper we present a numerical procedure for calculation of electrical conductivity in a periodic lattice of one-dimensional zero range potentials with a case of dominant impurity scattering. The conductivity was previously obtained in an integral form via an approximate solution of the kinetic Kolmogorov equation. The proposed approach is based on the quadrature formula for certain type of integrals. The results are compared with the low temperature limit approximation.

Electrochemical processes take place in a metal object immersed into sea water even if an anticorrosive coating is applied [1]. As a result, flowing field appears around the object. There are naval mines between many other objects situated in the sea. Naval mines can be put in the seabed in order to be more difficult to detect by sonars. Such a mine is located on the line demarking two environments of different electrical conductivity. The results of a computer analysis of the influence of seabed’s electrical conductivity on the electric field’s disposition around a mine model are shown below. Also, a naval mine detection system based on the FPGA circuit is presented.

Powdered polyaniline (PANI) was synthesised chemically with different doping anions namely hydrochloric acid, sulphuric acid and para-toluenesulfonic acid (pTSA). Two-step synthetic procedure was utilised at low temperature. The highest reaction efficiency was found for chlorine-doped PANI. Structural characterization with FTIR revealed the vibration bands characteristicto formation of the emeraldine salt. The surface morphology of doped PANIs was studied by SEM images which showed near globular shape and porous structures with different size of the aggregated particles. They were smaller for Cl-- or pTS--doped PANI while for SO4 2- the size was markedly larger. The XRD patterns revealed that there are ordered regions especially for pTS- doped PANI, while the highest conductivity value was recorded for Cl- doped one followed by organic pTS- doped and SO4 2- doped one.

In this study the results of simultaneous measurements of dynamic viscosity, thermal conductivity, electrical conductivity and pH of two nanofluids, i.e., thermal oil/Al2O3 and thermal oil/TiO2 are presented. Thermal oil is selected as a base liquid because of possible application in ORC systems as an intermediate heating agent. Nanoparticles were tested at the concentration of 0.1%, 1%, and 5% by weight within temperature range from 20°C to 60°C. Measurement devices were carefully calibrated by comparison obtained results for pure base liquid (thermal oil) with manufacturer’s data. The results obtained for tested nanofluids were compared with predictions made by use of existing models for liquid/solid particles mixtures.

Steel bars are manufactured in the rolling process, whereby they are characterized by strain hardening and poor plastic properties. In many application cases such properties are improper, therefore, additional heat treatment is required. Crucial influence on the products quality after heat treatment has an appropriate selection of process parameters. In many modern technologies of heat treatment the charge of porous structure is subjected to the heating process. Proper control of heat treatment parameters of bundles of rods requires knowledge on their thermal properties. However, it also requires accurate identification of complex heat transfer processes occurring in the porous material. Such analysis, with respect to bundles of bars, provide a response of qualitative nature of the heat exchange area of these charges. The article describes the emissivity measurements of samples of the steel charge using a thermal imaging camera.

Praca przedstawia wyniki badań wpływu wygrzewania na zmiennoprądowe właściwości elektryczne nanokompozytu (FeCoZr)x(CaF2)(100-x) o zawartości fazy metalicznej x = 81,8 at.% wytworzonego metodą jonowo-wiązkowego rozpylania w atmosferze argonu Ar i tlenu O2. Zaobserwowano, że w materiale są dwa rodzaje studni potencjału różniących się czasami relaksacji. Wygrzewanie powoduje zanik maksimów na częstotliwościowej zależności współczynnika częstotliwościowego α oraz wygładzenie odcinków wzrostu konduktywności na sigma(f), co oznacza całkowite utlenienie materiału
В статті наведено результати впливу відпалювання на електричні властивості на змінному струмі нанокомпозиту (FeCoZr)x(CaF2)(100-x), який має металеву фазу х = 81,8 ат.%, утвореного методом іонно-пучкового розпилення в атмосфері аргону Ar і кисню O2. Було виявлено, що в матеріалі є два різновиди студні потенціалу, які відрізняються часом релаксації. Відпалювання призводить до зникнення піків на частотній залежності частотного коефіцієнта α і згладжування діапазону зросту провідності sigma(f), що означає повне окислення матеріалу.
This paper presents results of researches on annealing influence on AC electric properties of nanocomposite (FeCoZr)x(CaF2)(100-x) with metallic phase content x = 81.8 at.% which was produced by ion-beam sputtering in argon Ar and oxygen O2 atmosphere. It was observed that there are two types of potential wells in the material, which are different in relaxation times. Annealing causes maximums disappearance on frequency dependence on frequency coefficient α and growing section smoothing, which means complete oxidation of material.

The influence of swelly pressure causes soil porosity to decrease slightly together with a reorientation of pores. They become more anisometric, while their original matrix microstructure acquires properties of matrix-turbulent microstructure.

Dynamic properties of the four-electrode cell with conducting liquid inside are described in the paper. The cell is used as a sensor of the electrolytic conductivity (EC) in the national Ukrainian standard. Electrical model and physical model for the temperature changes of this sensor are presented. To avoid additional measurement errors the stable state in desired temperature should be obtain. To obtain values of parameters describing the dynamic process of EC cell for temperature changes the experimental way was chosen. Installation and measurement procedure is presented. It is found that temperature transition process in the EC cell can be modeled by the first order differential equation and depends mainly on two cell tubes. For establishing the cell temperature within an error less then 0.002ºC time 36 min is needed.

The experiments have shown that the vulcanization process can be qualitatively and quantitatively evaluated on the basis of measurements of mechanical (standard procedure in rubber industry) and also electrical parameters. The results obtained for model system SBR rubber mixture under conditions of linear heating are presented also.

This study explores the effect of direct incorporation of different ratios of naphthalene with soil into the concrete used in Mafraq-Jordan on the thermal conductivity of concrete mixtures. The methodology involved testing 72 concrete cube samples. The basic samples were prepared only from a mixture of water, silica sand, and cement without additives. The additives of local soil and naphthalene of different ratios: 2.5%, 5%, 7%, 10% and 15%, were added to the tested samples. The samples were classified into two groups in terms of size and dimensions; 36 cubes with 5×5×5 cm were tested only for thermal conductivity, and 36 cubes with 3×3×3 cm were tested for compressive strength and thermal conductivity. All samples were tested after 28 days of casting, according to the concrete standards. The results show that adding naphthalene and soil to the cementitious mixtures substantially decreases the thermal conductivity of concrete elements. A reasonable reduction in thermal conductivity was achieved compared with the basic case samples. However, the compressive strength of samples remained within the acceptable values from the stand point of structural engineering. This enhancement in the thermal properties of concrete can be applied in building systems as concrete blocks used in internal and external walls.

The suitability of a new wireless smart farming system for controlling irrigation and fertilization of horticultural plants was assessed in the study. The system (name: AGREUS® ) includes sensors (soil moisture, salinity, weather data), executive modules (valve modules), and an application available on the web portal (accessed through computers and mobile devices). The studies were performed under laboratory and field conditions. Laboratory tests included appraisal of the precision of soil moisture and salinity measurements carried out with the soil probe (comparison with the results obtained by laboratory methods). Operational tests were conducted in field trials. In these trials, assessment of the possibility of practical control of irrigation and monitoring soil salinity was performed in an apple orchard. The conducted analyses have shown the usefulness of the system, not only for automatic control of irrigation but also for making decisions about the necessity to fertilize plants. The system enables continuous monitoring of changes in soil moisture and salinity, including the migration of minerals across the soil profile (using a probe with several measuring elements) as a result of the applied irrigation or rainfall. The system allows for automatic application of irrigation or fertigation depending on the adopted soil moisture and salinity thresholds. However, the tests showed that a salinity index calculated by the system does not directly correspond to the salinity values determined by laboratory methods. For this reason individual interpretation and determination of optimal ranges for plants is required.

The АС impedance model of a liquid conductivity has been developed to assess the influence of electromagnetic vector potential. It has been proved that the field in a liquid conductor is quasi-static. Approximation error, even taken for very concentrated solutions (e.g. sea water), does not exceed 0.01 ppm. The calculation of resistance of the four-electrode cell is given with the account of Ampere's circuit law. Two types of errors are defined: DC error due to finite thickness of electrodes, and AC error due to presence of displacement currents when using an impedance model.

Fuel cell is an alternative renewable energy source which potentially able to replace a fossil fuel. Nowadays, common fuel cell membrane generally used is Nafion. PVDF polymer is another synthetic polymer which has excellent physical and chemical properties. The purpose of this research is to synthesize an alternative fuel cell membrane, using sulfonated PVDF doped with TiO2 nanoparticles. Sol-gel method was performed to synthesize TiO2 nanoparticles, with TiCl4 as precursor. PVDF membranes with variation of TiO2 composition (0, 1, 1.5, and 2%) were prepared with ultrasonic method. The composite membranes then were sulfonated with concentrated sulfuric acid. The composite membranes were characterized with FTIR for functional group analysis, SEM-EDX for morphology analysis, acid-base titration for degree of sulfonation, weight difference for degree of water uptake, and four point lines for conductivity. FTIR spectra of the sulfonated membrane show the existence of sulfonic group at wavenumber of 601, 1400, and 1454 cm-1. The result of SEM-EDX analysis shows that the nanoparticles of TiO2 were not distributed homogenously. Degree of sulfonation of the PVDF-TiO2 2% composite membrane is 19.54%, and its water uptake is 23.34%. The highest conductivity is about 3.17 × 10-3 S cm-1 for the PVDF-TiO2 2% composite membrane that is very close to Nafion’s conductivity, 6.08 × 10-3 S cm-1.

Standard thermo-conductive gas flow meters have the side-channel integrated with the temperature detector and heater coils, both winded around the tube. This design suffers from a high thermal capacity, reduced sensitivity in the lower limit flow range, high thermal inertia, long response time and necessity to amplify electronically the output signal. The newly designed TCD detector can be applied as a precise gas flow meter. To identify the composition of the unknown gas, the TCD unit requires a connection to the separation column, application of the reference channel and highly stable flow rate regulator. To measure flow rates, the same TCD unit requires only one flow channel application, with active resistors inside it, and a definition of the gas type. In this work principles of the TCD design, technology and flow rate sensitivity tests are presented.

This paper investigates the thermal and mechanical properties of a composite made from a combination of 2063-epoxy resin and three different braided carbon-fiber fabric reinforcements. These fibres consist of HTS carbon, HTS carbon braided with nickel coated carbon and HTS carbon braided with nickel coated copper, respectively. The composites were manufactured through resin transfer molding (RTM) route. The thermal diffusivity of carbon fibers composites was measured at different temperature by using a flash method. The transverse and planar thermal conductivities were determined by measuring the specific heat, density and thermal diffusivities, respectively. The current research highlights the influence of adding nickel coated carbon and nickel-plated copper wires on the braided composites. The evaluation shows that the HTS carbon braided manufactured with nickel-plated copper wires presents higher in-plane thermal conductivity (in direction parallel of the fibres) when comparing to HTS carbon and HTS carbon braided manufactured with nickel coated carbon. The thermal conductivity benefits of those composite were achieved at the expenses of lower mechanical properties of braided composites investigated.

Electrical conductivity is used in the study of fresh-water and/or mineralized water outflow zones. Conductivity of water is relatively low. It strongly depends on its salinity and mineralization. Increased salinity and mineralization of water give rise to conductivity growth of hydrogeological medium. Finding water leak zones is an important problem during planning any building works. The influence of water on the building can be disadvantageous (elution, destruction of the foundations and sulfate aggressiveness). Because of high conductivity of water, watered zones can be recognized with the use of electromagnetic methods. The paper presents results of examination of mineralized water leak zones on the building site of the new CYFRONET building in the Ruczaj quarter, Cracow, Poland. The examinations were conducted with the use of ground conductivity meters. The main goal of the research was to find mineralized water leakage under the foundations of the new-built building.

In this paper, polypyrrole coated conductive fabrics were prepared using pyrrole as the monomer, p-toluene sulfonic acid as the doping agent and ammonium persulfate as the oxidant, adopting the simple method of situ polymerization of the liquid phase. Six types of conductive polypyrrole coated fabrics were prepared adopting polyester-cotton blended fabrics, nylon fabrics, wool fabrics, silk fabrics, basalt fabrics and aramid fabric respectively as base materials and using the same process conditions; its electrical conductivity was compared, and the distribution and resistance of the washing fastness of polypyrrole on the surface of those fabrics were studied. Results showed that under the same process conditions, the conductivity of polypyrrole coated terylene fabrics was the best, followed by the polypyrrole coated nylon fabrics and polypyrrole coated wool fabrics. Observed by electron microscope, the distribution of polypyrrole was more homogeneous on different base cloths. After washing, it was concluded that the combination fastness of polypyrrole with polyester-cotton, nylon and wool was better, while the combination fastness of polypyrrole with basalt and aramid was poor.

Water and ethylene glycol as ordinary coolants have been broadly utilized as a part of a car radiator for a long time. These heat exchange liquids offer low thermal conductivity. With the progression of nanotechnology, the new era of heat transfer fluids called, “nanofluids” have been developed and analysts found that these liquids offer higher thermal conductivity contrasted with that of routine coolants. This study concentrated on the utilization of a mixture of water and ethylene glycol based Al2O3 nanofluids in a cooling framework. Pertinent information, nanofluid properties and exact connections were obtained from literature review to examine the performance of a twin cylinder Diesel engine under various blends of nanofluid based coolants, furthermore, to research heat exchange improvement of a car radiator worked with nanofluid-based coolants. It was observed that, the performance of Diesel engine and heat transfer rate in cooling system framework enhanced with the utilization of nanofluids (with water and ethylene glycol the basefluid) contrasted with water and ethylene glycol (i.e. base liquid) alone. In the wake of leading the series of tests on Twin cylinder Diesel engine at 2%, 1% and 0.5% of nanofluid in basefluid, it was observed that performance of Diesel engine and heat exchange is upgraded better at 0.5% of Al2O3 nanofluid coolant.

In this paper the one-dimensional analytical formulation as well as the two-dimensional FE model to study the temperature distributions in the pad/disc brake system during an emergency braking process was proposed. Both the time-dependent pressure variation and the convective cooling conditions on the free surfaces of a pad have been incorporated in the contact analytical model. The one-dimensional thermal problem of friction of the strip-foundation system during braking was formulated. An exact solution of the problem using the mathematical device of the integral Laplace transform related to Duhamel theorem was obtained. In the FE formulation to discretize the heat conduction equation for the two-dimensional problem, the Galerkin method was employed. The temperature distributions were calculated exclusively for the disc employing the heat partition ratio. Furthermore, due to the symmetry of the problem the computations were restricted to the half of the entire disc. The finite element analysis of the transient heat transfer problem for the pad/disc system was carried out using the MSC Patran/Nastran program package. On order to confront and compare the resulting temperatures distributions, equal operation parameters, the thermophysical properties of materials as well as the dimensions of the brake components were used within the numerical and analytical calculation. The obtained results from the finite element analysis reveal that both the contact temperature evolution and its values in depth of the brake rotor agree well with the analytical solution and experimental data.

The aim of the study was to evaluate the content of colloids in septic tank effluent and their impact on textile filter permeability. Measurements were performed on septic tank effluent without suspended solids but containing colloids and without colloids – including only dissolved substances (filtered by micro-filters and centrifuged). The study was conducted on unclogged and clogged textile filter coupons. During the study the following measurements were conducted: turbidity, chemical oxygen demand and hydraulic conductivity of textile filter coupons. The colloid size range was assumed to be less than 1.2 microns according to the literature. Despite the relatively low content in the septic tank effluent the colloids played an important role in the clogging process. Both the filtering media, filled with low (unclogged) and high content of biomass (clogged) were sensitive to the clogging process acceleration due to the possibility of small diameter pore closure and oxygen access termination. Moreover, small size pores were probably sensitive to closing or bridging by small size colloidal particles.

Proper design of the building component, which not only meets the legal requirements, but also provides comfort of using of buildings, requires knowledge of the materials and solutions. Since moisture is one of the main factors that can affect the building structure destruction, it is particularly important to be aware of hygrothermal properties of components. And this is the focus of the study. In this paper several variants of external walls were analysed, according to the requirements in terms of: heat transfer coefficient U, the risk of surface and interstitial condensation. Partitions were designed with composite based on shives from industrial hemp and lime binder, which is not yet widely used in Poland. The purpose of the analysis of this material was to prove the validity of using the natural materials in residential buildings.

Aquifer geoelectric (Formation factor and Porosity) and hydraulic parameters (Transmissivity and Hydraulic Conductivity) were estimated using VES in parts of Obudu, Southern Nigeria. Hydraulic parameters study would help in to reduce additional expenditures in carrying out pumping tests. Hydraulic parameters are used to estimate the groundwater supply potential, protective capacity rating, soil corrosivity and designation. Most of the estimated aquifers have poor protective capacity rating, low designation, smaller withdrawal for local water supply and slightly corrosive. The objectives of this study is to delineate relationship between geoelectric and hydraulic parameters in the study area, There is a strong correlation between hydraulic conductivity (K) with Porosity and Formation Factor respectively as 0.81 and 1.00, while a weak correlation exist between Transmissivity with Porosity and Formation Factor, respectively as 0.11 and 0.15. The regression equation of the hydraulic parameters and geoelectric parameters from the study area are; , , , , where K; Hydraulic Conductivity, T; Transmissivity, F; Formation Factor and ; Porosity. The range of formation factor, porosity, transmissivity and hydraulic conductivity are 11.80 – 132.50, 8.69% - 29.11%, 1.32 – 19.64 and 0.52 – 0.67 respectively.

Fire safety is a major concern in the design of timber construction. Wood is combustible material. The thermal response of timber connections is usually the main factor in evaluating the overall load-bearing capacity of wood structures exposed to fire. The analysis of timber joints under fire conditions is difficult and complex. Finite element model is developed to predict the thermal behavior of bolted wood-to-wood joints exposed to fire. In fire, the material characteristic depend on the temperature. The thermal model is continuous, taking into account the thermal continuity between the joint components. Also, the thermal model is used to predict the evolution of the temperature field inside the connection. The paper presents a summary of results from a numerical studies of the fire behavior of wood-to-wood timber connections with steel bolt. As a result of computer simulations the temperature distribution was obtained. During fire exposure, the timber section is reduced and steel bolt reduces strength. Loadcarrying capacity per shear plane in fire conditions was calculated using two methods: design methods according to EN 1995-1-1 [5] and reduced load method according to EN 1995-1-2 [6]. In the first approach, the timber section loss and steel strength reduction during the fire were taken into account.

This paper examines the importance of empirical formulas for estimating the hydraulic conductivity of non- -cohesive soils, taking into account their compaction. Empirical formulas are often used in practice to quickly and cost-effectively determine hydraulic conductivity of soil. Verification of calculation of this parameter was performed for five formulas taking into account the characteristic diameters of grains and porosity. The results obtained by calculations were compared with the results of laboratory tests performed on soil samples with the same porosity coefficients (at different density index) as assumed in the calculation method. An empirical formula has been proposed to correct the hydraulic conductivity of soils obtained from the Hazen formula by taking into account the density index of a given soil.

The paper presents a method of how the nonlinear boundary condition [1] may be applied in nonlinear problems of electromagnetic field theory. It is introduced for problems with nonlinear conductivity. An analytical procedure has been constructed, which seeks to reduce calculations related with the nonlinear region. In order to verify the proposed solutions, two problems have been formulated: one of linear and the other of cylindrical symmetry. These have been additionally solved by the authors’ modification of the perturbation method that has been described in previous papers [7, 8, 10]. The electromagnetic field distribution obtained thereby has served as a referential result since it can obtain very accurate solutions [10]. Relative errors of electric and magnetic field strength are introduced to verify the results.

In the study described here model calibration was performed employing the inverse analysis using genetic algorithms (GA). The objective of analysis is to determine value of the coefficient of hydraulic conductivity, k. The commonly used method for the determination of coefficient of hydraulic conductivity based on Terzaghi consolidation leads to an underestimation of the value of k as the Terzaghi model does not take into account the deformation of soil skeleton. Here, an alternative methodology based on genetic algorithms is presented for the determination of the basic parameters of Biot consolidation model. It has been demonstrated that genetic algorithms are a highly effective tool enabling automatic calibration based on simple rules. The values of the coefficient of hydraulic conductivity obtained with GA are of at least one order smaller than values obtained with the Terzaghi model.

The paper concerns effective conductivity of a heterogeneous soil composed of two materials characterized by different hydraulic conductivities. According to the homogenization theory the effective conductivity is obtained from the solution of an elliptic equation for a single representative elementary volume. A numerical algorithm to solve this equation is described. Examples of calculations for periodic media with inclusions of various shapes are presented. Influence of volumetric fraction, arrangement, continuity and conductivity ratio of the two materials on the effective conductivity is investigated. Numerical results are compared with some analytical estimations available in the literature.

The aim of this work is the development of Cu-Al2O3 composites of copper Cu-ETP matrix composite materials reinforced by 20 and 30 vol.% Al2O3 particles and study of some chosen physical properties. Squeeze casting technique of porous compacts with liquid copper was applied at the pressure of 110 MPa. Introduction of alumina particles into copper matrix affected on the significant increase of hardness and in the case of Cu-30 vol. % of alumina particles to 128 HBW. Electrical resistivity was strongly affected by the ceramic alumina particles and addition of 20 vol. % of particles caused diminishing of electrical conductivity to 20 S/m (34.5% IACS). Thermal conductivity tests were performed applying two methods and it was ascertained that this parameter strongly depends on the ceramic particles content, diminishing it to 100 Wm-1K-1 for the composite material containing 30 vol.% of ceramic particles comparing to 400 Wm-1K-1 for the unreinforced copper. Microstructural analysis was carried out using SEM microscopy and indicates that Al2O3 particles are homogeneously distributed in the copper matrix. EDS analysis shows remains of silicon on the surface of ceramic particles after binding agent used during preparation of ceramic preforms.

Opis:
Technologia wytwarzania masy szklanej jest wieloetapowym procesem obejmującym: sporządzenie zestawu, topienie, klarowanie i ujednorodnianie stopu oraz formowanie. Aby zestaw surowcowy został przekształcony w jednolitą, klarowną masę, muszą w nim zajść przemiany fizyczne i chemiczne, często wyhamowywane przez niewystarczający kontakt pomiędzy poszczególnymi ziarnami w zestawie surowcowym. Pojawiająca się w pierwszym etapie topienia zestawu surowcowego ciekła faza amorficzna, ułatwia lepszy kontakt pomiędzy nimi, dzięki łączeniu ziaren cienkimi mostkami. W pracy zbadano wpływ stopnia zagęszczenia zestawu surowcowego na szybkość reakcji oraz ilość tworzącej się fazy amorficznej. W tym celu komercyjny zestaw surowcowy na szkło opakowaniowe zagęszczono przy trzech różnych ciśnieniach: 0,2 MPa, 15 MPa oraz 40 MPa, a następnie przeprowadzono proces wygrzewania w temperaturach: 800°C, 1100°C oraz 1200°C.
The manufacturing technology of glass is a multi-step process comprising: preparing a set, melting, refining and homogenizing of the alloy and molding. In order to convert a batch of raw material into a unified, clear mass, chemical and physical changes must take place. These changes are insufficient contact between individual grains in set of raw materials. Liquid amorphous phase appearing in the first stage of melting raw mix, by combining grains with thin webs, facilitates better contact between them. The paper presents the effect of the degree of compaction of raw mix on the reaction rate and the amount of amorphous phase forming. For this purpose, a commercial batch of raw materials was compacted at three different pressures: 0,2 MPa, 15 MPa and 40 MPa, followed by annealing process at temperatures: 800°C, 1100°C and 1200°C.

The numerical modelling of transport phenomena in porous media often requires a compromise between grid precision and the accuracy of simulation results. This study demonstrates the impact of errors on the accuracy of the reproduction of the actual pore space by the numerical grid on the estimated values of the saturated water conductivity. Four types of computational grids with varying levels of complexity were prepared for each of the 12 tomographic images of the porous specimens. The specific surfaces and total porosities were calculated for each of the meshes and compared with those parameters calculated for binarized tomographic images. Simulations of steady flow were performed on the computational grids, and the saturated water conductivity values were calculated. It has been shown that an insufficiently accurate mesh only reproduces the largest pore spaces in the analysed sample, which most often leads to an underestimation of the water conductivity coefficient. The following criterion for the optimal accuracy of the computational grid is proposed, it is based on the voxel size of the tomographic images of the porous media: the minimum size of the cell in the mesh used for simulations has to be at most two times the size of the voxel used in the tomographic scans of the porous medium.

This study considers solid planets at about 300 K and an inert atmosphere having no interaction with associated radiation. Processes considered include transfer of energy from the surface skin to underlying layers depending on thermal properties. Temperatures of the surface depend on the rates of transfer of energy between soil layers. The atmosphere is warmed at base by contact with the surface, convection and turbulence distributing higher temperatures through the air. Comparisons between theoretical and measured temperatures show a close similarity. Mean planetary temperatures are calculated, depending on thermal parameters and the intensity of light/radiation from the particular solar system.

Gathering information about soil properties in an efficient way is essential for many soil applications also for very shallow geothermal systems (e.g. collector systems or heat baskets). In the field, electrical resistivity tomogramphy measurements enable non-invasive and extensive analyses regarding the determination of soil properties. For a better understanding of measured electrical resistivity values in relation to soil properties within this study, a laboratory setup was developed. The structure of this laboratory setup is geared to gather electrical resistivity or rather electrical conductivity values which are directly comparable to data measured in the field. Within this setup grain size distribution, moisture content, and bulk density, which are the most important soil parameters affecting the electrical resistivity, can be adjusted. In terms of a better estimation of the geothermal capability of soil, thermal conductivity measurements were also implemented within the laboratory test sequence. The generated data reveals the serious influence of the water content and also provides a huge impact of the bulk density on the electrical as well as on the thermal conductivity. Furthermore, different behaviour patterns of electrical and thermal conductivity in their particular relation to the different soil parameters could be identified.

Opis:
A possibility of light pulse transformation by transient reflecting medium is investigated theoretically. After solving 1D problem of such a reflection one estimates such a transformation in a plane optical waveguide with time-dependent conductivity of one of the reflected media. Three types of the conductivity time-dependences are considered: harmonic, Bessel-like and splash-like ones. Obtained results show a possibility of pulse splitting under an influence of time-harmonic conductivity and pulse collapse vy the other considered nonstationarities.

The objective of this paper is to evaluate the self- healing properties of a commercially-available geosynthetic clay liner (GCL) using flexible-wall permeameter. The GCLs are produced by the same factory, but the contents of bentonite are different. Also the hydraulic conductivities (HC) of GCLs with no defect are different. In this study, specimens were completely saturated under the backpressure of 20 kPa before the test. Permeability tests were performed on GCL specimens with penet rating flaw and also on specimens permeated with distilled water and CaCl2 solutions. The test results were presented and discussed. Experimental results showed that the GCL with penetrating flaw did not exhibit complete self-healing in the case of flaw. After 120 days, the hydraulic conductivity increased by approximately an order of magnitude. In addition, CaCl2 solutions had a significant influence on the hydraulic conductivity. The research findings might be of interest to researchers and engineers who design liners for landfills and other liquid containment facilities.

The influence of electron irradiation fluxes with energy of 12 MeV and heat treatment on the electrical properties of epoxypolymers with PEPA content of 11, 12 and 13 wt.h. per 100 wt. including epoxy resin. It is show that the electrical conductivity of epoxypolymer increases with electron irradiation fluxes greater than 10 kGy. It found that extra heat treatment of irradiated samples with a hardener content of 12 wt. h. hours leads to an increase in their electrical conductivity. The nature of the obtained dependences of electrical conductivity is determine by the processes of cross-linking, radiation, thermal destruction and mass fraction of the hardener. Radiation-stimulated increase in the conductivity of epoxypolymers can be use to create conductive protective coatings and sensor electronics elements.

Four of five models of the ceramic-slab-capped cast-iron cylinder head for a prospective adiabatic engine were numerically investigated. The models were designed using several crystallochemical-mineralogical considerations. The outcome of some short radiation and convection Fortran95 programmes became the input data for the FEM programme of temperatures and stresses. It turns out, that in general the material that cannot withstand will hardly be ceramics, but the cast iron. Thence, the latter should be replaced, plated or the ceramics should cover it at the injection jet. The temperatures and stresses were analysed with and without an interlayer. Two models, with feldspars and Ti6Al4V or Pt30Au70, were quite promising, the first one being surely at once applicable even without interlayer i.e. according to FEM. The stresses in the models with YSZ, cerium disilicide and/or pyroxene, in spite of the crystallochemical hattrics deemed successful, betoken spallation of the YSZ. The problems of emissivity were addressed as well. There exists a blank range of temperature where neither radiation-related algorithm nor the common conductivity one can perform well. The surface of the head under hood appears 'quite cold', except the exhaust pipe, the TBC solution of which is left in abeyance in this paper. Adiabatic engines using ceramic as the material for the combustion camber walls were developed for the reduction of cooling loss and the in crease of exhaust energies.

In this study, we investigated the effect of Fe addition (0, 0.25, 0.50 and 0.75 wt.%) on the microstructure, mechanical properties and electrical conductivity of as-cast and as-extruded Al-RE alloys. As the Fe element increased by 0 and 0.75wt.%, the phase fraction increased to 5.05, 5.76, 7.14 and 7.38 %. The increased intermetallic compound increased the driving force for recrystallization and grain refinement. The electrical conductivity of Al-1.0 wt.%RE alloy with Fe addition decreased to 60.29, 60.15, 59.58 and 59.13 % IACS. With an increase in the Fe content from 0 to 0.75 wt.% the ultimate tensile strength (UTS) of the alloy increased from 74.3 to 77.5 MPa. As the mechanical properties increase compared to the reduction of the electrical conductivity due to Fe element addition, it is considered to be suitable for fields requiring high electrical conductivity and strength.

W artykule przedstawiono wyniki badań właściwości elektrycznych oraz magnetycznych materiałów charakteryzujących się niewielką podatnością magnetyczną. Opisano układy oraz metody pomiaru zarówno przenikalności magnetycznej jak również konduktywności takich materiałów. W podsumowaniu zawarto wnioski wyciągnięte z badania korelacji właściwości elektrycznych i magnetycznych.
The characteristic feature of paramagnetic materials is very small value of the magnetic permeability, very close to unity, so a reliable measurement is not a typical issue. Measurement circuit, presented in the article, allows measure both active and reactive components of the induced voltage in the winding of the detection coil, wherein the sample material is placed. The measurement procedure is two-step, first the reactive component of induced voltage is measured at the terminals of the detection coil with the sample, and second without the sample, and based on the determined values the permeability is calculated. The article presents results of several samples of selected paramagnetic materials. Studies include both permeability and conductivity of those materials. Attempted to correlate occurred magnetic permeability of tested material with its conductivity. The summary contains conclusions based on tested properties. Further research will involve an correlation attempt of the active component of the voltage induced in the detection coil of the present measuring system (Fig. 1) with the electrical properties of the sample.

Poszukiwanie nowych zastosowań materiałów skalnych wymaga zwrócenia szczególnej uwagi na badania podstawowe. Obecny opis właściwości surowców skalnych oparty jest głównie na pomiarach wytrzymałości, czy ścieralności. Nowe zastosowania wymagają także innego typu badań. W tej kwestii zaproponowano badania termiczne (przewodność cieplna, rozszerzalność termiczna, szybkość wnikania fali termicznej) wsparte badaniem nasiąkliwości wodnej. Badania zostały przeprowadzone w celu wskazania nowych praktycznych zastosowań migmatytu, który jest wykorzystywany głównie jako kruszywo (kamienie drogowe i budowlane). Otrzymane wyniki pomiarów wskazują, że migmatyt może być zastosowany jako materiał konstrukcyjny, gdyż charakteryzuje się dobrymi właściwościami termicznymi jak i wizualnymi. W badaniach wyznaczono wartość współczynnika przewodności cieplnej λM=3,73[W/Km], rozszerzalności termicznej αM=5,2*10-6[K-1] oraz nasiąkliwości wodnej, który nie przekracza 0,4%.
The searching of the new applications of rock materials requires to pay careful attention on basic research. The current characterization of properties of the rock materials is mainly based on measurements of strength, and also abrasion. The new possibilities of applications involve to perform other types of research. In this subject, the study of thermal properties (thermal conductivity, thermal expansion, thermal wave penetration) were carried out, as well as the water absorption measurements. The studies were done in order to identify the new practical applications of migmatite, which is mainly used as aggregate (in road or building construction). The obtained results indicate that migmatite can be used as a construction material, because of its good thermal and visual properties. The studies determined the coefficient of thermal conductivity λM = 3.73 [W/Km] and thermal expansion αM = 5.2* 10-6 [K-1], and water absorption, which does not exceed 0.4%.
