Opis:
Fluid flows in the soil, in the plant root zone, are linked with many phenomena, which may be considered in several scales. Interdisciplinary, complex knowledge explaining these phenomena in micro- and mesoscale may be effectively used in a computer model simulating the flow. The work constitutes a preliminary analysis of possibilities for implementation of this project. The researchers have pointed out promising computational methods (MD, SPH, LG), which are employed in similar problems. These methods are available in some flow-simulating applications, however they are not soil environment-oriented. Difficulties in adaptation are brought about by the number of phenomena, complicated material and geometrical structure of soil, and changes in this structure generated by flow. Model framework is planned to be based on three object groups: soil, fluids, plant roots. The model should be open, allowing to make extensions through introducing new components and modules, e.g. new soil constituents, and methods describing their behaviour in the aspect of flow.

Opis:
This paper proposes a new information-theoretic method based on the information enhancement method to extract important input variables. The information enhancement method was developed to detect important components in neural systems. Previous methods have focused on the detection of only the most important components, and therefore have failed to fully incorporated the information contained in the components into learning processes. In addition, it has been observed that the information enhancement method cannot always extract input information from input patterns. Thus, in this paper a computational method is developed to accumulate information content in the process of information enhancement. The method was applied to an artificial data set and the analysis of mission statements. The results demonstrate that while we were able to explicitly extract the symmetric properties of the data from the artificial data set, only one main factor was able to be extracted from the mission statement, namely, “contribution to the society”. The companies with higher profits tend to have mission statements concerning the society. The results can be considered to be a first step toward the full clarification of the importance of mission statements in actual business activities.

Opis:
The objective of the study was to develop computational methods for determination of the impact of the twin-wheels (their positioning along the axis) and soil conditions, specified by the stress concentration factor, on the limit values of the forces loading the axis of the agriculture vehicle, thus reducing the risk of excessive soil compaction. The formula of Boussinesqu (1885) supplemented by Fröhlich (1934) with the stress concentration factors was used. The values of the limit force were determined by adopting assumptions that wheels loaded soil surface in points and stress caused in soil should not exceed its agro-technical bearing capacity defined by the value of the limiting stress. The developed method allows setting the limit value of twin-wheelbase, at which the effect of adjoining force onto stress in soil semi-space fades away. This means that through a relatively small change of a wheelbase, it is possible to achieve more convenient conditions of load transfer on soil, in the context of the risk reduction of excessive soil compaction. The proposed method enables to construct diagrams for calculation of allowable axis load on the base of the known value of stress within the soil profile which determine its agro-technical capacity.
Zaproponowana metoda umożliwia wykonanie nomogramów do określania dopuszczalnego obciążenia osi pojazdu na podstawie znajomości wartości naprężenia w glebie, wyznaczającego jej agrotechniczną nośność.

Opis:
In this work, we introduce a method of estimating stochastic freeway capacity using elements of both extreme value theory and survival analysis. First, we define capacity data, or estimates of the capacity of the roadway, as the daily maximum flow values. Then, under a survival analysis premise, we introduce censoring into our definition. That is, on days when flows are sufficiently high and congestion occurs, corresponding flow maxima are considered true estimates of capacity; otherwise, for those days that do not observe high flows or congestion, flow maxima are deemed censored observations and capacities must be higher than the observations. By extreme value theory, the collection of flow maxima (block maxima) can be appropriately approximated with a generalized extreme value (GEV) distribution. Because of small sample sizes and the presence of censoring, a Bayesian framework is pursued for model fitting and parameter estimation. To lend credence to our proposed methodology, the procedure is applied to real-world traffic stream data collected by the New Hampshire Department of Transportation (NHDOT) at a busy location on Interstate I-93 near Salem, New Hampshire. Data were collected over a period of 11 months and raw data were aggregated into 15-minute intervals. To assess our procedure, and to provide proof of concept, several validation procedures are presented. First, using distinct training and validation subsets of our data, the procedure yields accurate predictions of highway capacity. Next, our procedure is applied to a training set to yield random capacities which are then used to predict breakdown in the validation set. The frequency of these predicted breakdowns is found to be statistically similar to observed breakdowns observed in our validation set. Lastly, after comparing our methodology to other methods of stochastic capacity estimation, we find our procedure to be highly successful.

In the paper the mathematical and numerical descriptions of the general case of thermal contact between two flat bodies are presented. The numerical model of the problem is based on the Finite Element Method (FEM). Variable width of the contact gap between interacting bodies is considered. The model allows the use of independent spatial discretization of the contacting components, which means that the edges of the finite elements lying on the both sides of the contact gap need not be matched. The algorithm of treatment of the fourth kind boundary condition is described in details.

This paper presents the research studies carried out on the application of lattice Boltzmann method (LBM) to computational aeroacoustics (CAA). The Navier-Stokes equation-based solver faces the difficulty of computational efficiency when it has to satisfy the high-order of accuracy and spectral resolution. LBM shows its capabilities in direct and indirect noise computations with superior space-time resolution. The combination of LBM with turbulence models also work very well for practical engineering machinery noise. The hybrid LBM decouples the discretization of physical space from the discretization of moment space, resulting in flexible mesh and adjustable time-marching. Moreover, new solving strategies and acoustic models are developed to further promote the application of LBM to CAA.

This paper presents applications of the adaptive FEM in computational biomechanics. The study involves finite deformation of artery walls built of layers of elastic, nearly incompressible (rubber-like) materials. The models are reinforced with nearly inextensible collagen fibres stretched along the directions close to the circumferential direction. A Total Lagrangian technique based on the displacement-pressure formulation is presented. Residual error estimates and finite element mesh adaptation strategies are developed. The procedures are illustrated for solutions of arteries under various load considerations.

The aim of work is the investigation of the internal stresses in PVD coated metal matrix composites (MMC). Sintered MMC substrate is composed of the matrix with the chemical composition corresponding to the high-speed steel, reinforced with the TiC type hard carbide phase. Functionally graded composition of MMC providing of high ductility characteristic of steel in the core zone as well as high hardness characteristic of cemented carbides in the surface zone. Internal stresses were determined with use of finite element method in ANSYS environment. The reason of undertaking the work is necessity of develop the research of internal stresses, occurring in the coating, as well as in the adhesion zone of coating and substrate, which makes it possible to draw valuable conclusions concerning engineering process of the advisable structure and chemical composition of coatings. The investigations were carried out on cutting tools models containing defined zones differing in chemical composition. Modelled materials were characteristic of chemical composition corresponding to the high-speed steel at the core, reinforced with the TiC type hard carbide phase with the growing fraction of these phases in the outward direction from the core to the surface, additionally coated with (Ti,Al)N or Ti(C.N) functionally graded PVD coatings. Results of determined internal stresses were compared with the results calculated using experimental X-ray sin2ψ method. It was demonstrated, that the presented model meets the initial criteria, which gives ground to the assumption about its utility for determining the stresses in coatings as well as in functionally graded sintered materials. The results of computer simulations correlate with the experimental results.

Non-linear phenomena appear in many fields of engineering and science. Research on numerical methods is continually extending with the improvement of the latest computing tools. In today’s computational field, one requires maximum achievement in a minimum amount of time. Therefore, there is a need to modify the Newton-type method to achieve higher-order convergence to solve non-linear equations. While the modified methods are expected to be higher-order convergent, the minor computational information and the maximum time efficiency are also important factors. We propose a three-step hybrid iterative method having a non-linear nature. Per iteration, the method requires three function evaluations and three first-order derivatives. The method is theoretically proven to be tenth-order convergent. The mathematical results of the proposed strategy to solve models from fluid dynamics, electric field, and real gases demonstrated better performance. In light of error analysis, computational productivity, and CPU times, the proposed method’s performance is compared to the famous Newton and a recently proposed tenth-order method.

The comparison of the error of pseudospectral approximation and upwind finite-differences using Steger-Warming flux splitting method shows high accuracy of the pseudospectral method even for few collocation points. The same conclusion is formulated for the second test case, namely incompressible flow in two-dimensional driven cavity solved by control volume formulation with modified QUICK upwinding scheme and SIMPLEC algorithm for pressure correction. As usually conclusions concerning accuracy of numerical methods are flow case dependent, but the two examples shown give some idea about the accuracy and resolution of spectral approximation versus standard CFD schemes.

FEM (finite element method) is an essential and powerful numerical method that can explicitly optimize the design process of electrical devices. In this paper, the employment of FEM tools such as SolidWorks, COMSOL and ANSYS is proposed in order to aid electrical apparatuses engineering and modeling – those are arc chambers of modular circuit breakers. Procured models of arc chambers have been undergoing simulations concerning heating, electric potential distribution, electric charge velocity and traverse paths. The data acquired has been juxta-positioned against experimental data procured in the Short-Circuit Laboratory, Warsaw University of Technology. The reflection of the theoretical approach was clearly noted in the experimental results. Mutual areas of the modeled element expressed the same physical properties and robustness errors when tested under specific conditions – faithfully reflecting those which were experimented with. Moreover, the physical phenomena essential for electrical engineering could be determined already at the model stage. This procedure proved highly valuable during designing/engineering work in terms of material economy.

Background: Computational (in silico) methods, such as quantitative structure-activity relationships (QSARs) are already well recognized and used in many screening programs related to environmental, industrial and medical chemistry. The main idea of the QSAR is that there is a relationship between molecular structure and ultimate biological effect caused by a chemical compound. In this respect the approach could be used successfully for prediction of various biological endpoints caused by chemical compounds including receptor binding affinity. Aim of the study: In the current study the capabilities for structure-activity modelling incorporated in noncommercial software tool have been employed for investigating the binding effect of xenobiotics toward estrogen and human pregnane X receptor. Material and methods: The analysis was performed by making use of the non-commercial software platform QSAR Toolbox. This system allows application of a set of built-in models for different biological effects, and also allows incorporation of new models for other endpoints. Results: Two models have been applied for predicting the binding effect toward estrogen and human pregnane X receptors of a large number of chemicals collected in a single database of high practical concern. The results show that there are many chemicals which are able to bind the investigated receptors. Since those chemicals are encountered in the environment, they could be considered as potential threat for society. Conclusions: The obtained results could be used as initial step for further experimental testing of those chemicals in order to confirm their potential to harm biological systems in the body.
