The climate change is probably the greatest challenge humanity is facing today. In order to protect future generations from the catastrophic effects of the process, actions to achieve climate neutrality are being taken worldwide. These actions include development of renewable energy sources. Renewable energy depends on weather conditions, which results in a mismatch between supply and demand for energy. Use of energy storage is the technical solution to minimize this issue. The paper presents topics related to the potential storing of surplus electricity produced from renewable energy sources (RES) in the form of compressed air. The article also shows worldwide solutions for energy storage using compressed air. As part of the work, three variants of a warehouse consisting of standardly available pneumatic units were considered. The conducted analyzes made it possible to determine the energy efficiency of such a system. It can be observed that greater efficiency is achieved by using large flow compressors and the operation of the pneumatic motor at a higher supply pressure. In addition, it can also be said that the greatest losses are associated with the operation of the compressor, which generates large amounts of heat during operation. Increasing the efficiency of the energy storage system can be achieved by utilizing the heat generated in the compression process.

Structural components are often operated under combined stress conditions (primary and secondary stresses), but the stress levels generated by residual stress (or secondary stress) is hardly ever evaluated. Hence, stress intensity factors at the crack tips of a compact tension (CT) specimen under a pre-compressed load condition are analyzed using the finite element method. Then, the average residual stress intensity factor is calculated and analyzed. As the crack length α0/W increases, the average residual stresses σave/σ0 grows under the same pre-compression load. σave/σ0 increases rapidly at a low range of the pre-compression load but tends to a constant in a high range of the load. The distribution of the average residual stress intensity factors Kave and Κave/σ0 of the CT specimen with same crack length under different pre-compression loads have the same tendency. Additionally, the distribution of Κave and KFEM under different pre-compression loads are also similar. Nevertheless, Kave estimated by the average residual stress is too conservative and not accurate, and the method is complex, which depends on the analysis of simulation. Therefore, a simple method for calculating Mode I stress intensity factor K for this model is presented. A group of examples is presented to verify the accuracy of the method.

Opis:
Pneumatic suspension is increasingly used in many cars. Control of a car body level is the main function of the pneumatic suspension. The experimental determination of the pneumatic spring characteristics suitable for the design and modeling of the car level control system is presented. The characteristics of the pneumatic spring are determined, that determine the quality of the control system. The effect of temperature changes inside the pneumatic spring is experimentally determined due to heat exchange on air pressure and vertical force during alignment of the car body. In addition, through modeling is evaluated by changing the level of the car body due to the impact of heat transfer. An original method of controlling the lifting and lowering of the vehicle body is proposed. The method is based on the energy balance and is the basis for reducing the number of strokes of the electropneumatic valve. The change in the level of the body due to the temperature effect is leveled due to the indirect consideration of this effect using the pressure sensor in the cylinder.

Opis:
Pneumatic brake, which use compressed air as a working medium, is the main brake of rail vehicles. The equipment used in the braking system requires sufficiently clean, without water vapour medium to work properly. Removing water vapour from the air prevents condensation and ice formation during winter, which guarantees correct brake operation. For this purpose, adsorption dryers are used in the railways to ensure the required pressure dew point value. This article includes an overview of available compressed air drying methods, the results of calculations and bench test of the dryer prototype developed at the Institute. Assumptions and requirements for the device intended for use in railways are based on European standards and UIC cards.

Pneumopercussion machines (pneumatic impact machines) are widely used in all areas of human activity. Also, they are widely used in the mining industry. Unfortunately, their operation is characterized by a low efficiency of compressed air energy usage. In some cases, this level of efficiency is calculated as 15-20%. Such a situation increases the cost of drilling operations significantly. In this article, due to an implementation of a new construction of the equipment, the efficiency of the pneumopercussion machines was increased. This problem is solved by combining the most effective thermodynamic processes of compressed air in the working chambers of machines. Also, a new technical solution for the construction of pneumopercussion machines is suggested by the Authors. The proposed new design is realized by a combination of the most effective thermodynamic processes in the chambers of pneumatic impact machines. A new pneumatic hammer is presented, which allows to reduce compressed air consumption twice during an operation on the surface (in comparison with hammers available on the market). The operation of pneumopercussion machines and the method of calculating geometric parameters are described. The economic performance of the equipment confirms the correctness of the proposed technological solutions.

The quest to reduce dangerous environmental emissions has led to the research and use of alternate and renewable energy sources. One of the major contributors to the dangerous environmental emissions is the automotive industry. The world is, therefore, quickly moving towards hybrid and electric vehicles. An alternate pollution-free automotive engine is a compressed-air engine, which is powered by compressed air and is more efficient than the electric engine since it requires less charging time than a traditional battery-operated engine. Furthermore, the tanks used in compressed-air engines have a longer lifespan in comparison to the batteries used in electric vehicles. However, extensive research is required to make this engine viable for commercial use. The current study is a step forward in this direction and shows the performance analysis of a single-cylinder compressed-air engine, developed from a four-stroke, single-cylinder, 70 cc gasoline engine. The results show that compressed-air engines are economic, environmental friendly and efficient.

All three Baltic States have reached good figures regarding the change in total greenhouse gas emissions from transport during 1990-2017. Particularly successful is Lithuania, showing a negative value of -2.7%. Latvia considerably lags behind Estonia (+15.1% vs. +1.5%). Amid the achievement of Latvian scientists, engineers and merchants, the authors point out the work of Lithuanian engineers who investigated how gaseous hydrogen affects the parameters of diesel internal combustion engine. Important to note that in the Baltic States, the activities of inland waterway vessels and the shunting locomotives are concentrated in only a few main cities. Regarding that, Baltic scientists and environment specialists nowadays are developing plans also for local air pollution decreasing, which can be carried out in particular cities or industrial areas, thereby allowing for improvements in air cleanliness and the ecological situation in concerned local area. A numerical estimation shows that applying the NYSMART technology, introduced in this paper, will make areas of active action of the high-volume diesels cleaner in the same amount as gained by photosynthesis of the urban green flora. In recent years, the developed technology of hydraulic piston compression allows producing numerous different vehicle fueling appliances for the CNG/bio-CNG fuel. The further development of this technology means the producing of various solutions, applicable at biogas/biomethane production sites, for CNG/bio-CNG compression, transportation and fast natural gas vehicles refueling in a cost effective and convenient way. The hydraulic piston compression and NYSMART have a potential in small and medium-scale technologies and therefore need to be developed further for applications with hydrogen. Production of biomethane and green hydrogen is delayed by the lack of state aid programmes in the Baltic States. Lithuania is on the way to change the situation in the coming years, with one of the first biomethane gas production plants due to be built near Panevėžys, in Šilagalys near the Via Baltica motorway. Summing up all aspects, the preconditions for the use of alternative fuels in the Baltic States are similar, allowing one to learn from other’s experience and to consider joint projects.

Engines powered by compressed air as a source of propulsion are known for many years. Nevertheless, this type of drive is not commonly used. The main reason for not using commonly is the problem with the low energy density of the compressed air. They offer a number of advantages, primarily focusing on the possibility of significantly lowering the emissions of the engine. Their emissivity mainly depends on the method of obtaining compressed air. This also has an impact on the economic aspects of the drive. Currently there are only a few, ready to implement, compressed air powered engine solutions available on the market. A major advantage is the ability to convert internal combustion engines to run with compressed air. The study provides a literature review of solutions, focusing on a multifaceted analysis of pneumatic drives. Increasing vehicle approval requirements relating to their emissions performance are encouraging for the search of alternative power sources. This creates an opportunity for the development of unpopular propulsion systems, including pneumatic engines. Analysing the works of some researchers, it is possible to notice a significant increase in the efficiency of the drive, which may contribute to its popularisation.

In the frame of stochastic filtering for nonlinear (discrete-time) dynamic systems, the unscented transformation plays a vital role in predicting state information from one time step to another and correcting a priori knowledge of uncertain state estimates by available measured data corrupted by random noise. In contrast to linearization-based techniques, such as the extended Kalman filter, the use of an unscented transformation not only allows an approximation of a nonlinear process or measurement model in terms of a first-order Taylor series expansion at a single operating point, but it also leads to an enhanced quantification of the first two moments of a stochastic probability distribution by a large signal-like sampling of the state space at the so-called sigma points which are chosen in a deterministic manner. In this paper, a novel application of the unscented transformation technique is presented for the stochastic analysis of measurement uncertainty in magnet resonance imaging (MRI). A representative benchmark scenario from the field of velocimetry for engineering applications which is based on measured data gathered at an MRI scanner concludes this contribution.

Opis:
The paper deals with a shape optimisation procedure of steel, compressed bars. Circular hollow sections (CHS) of variable cross sections and variable wall thickness are taken into account. The proposed procedure for designing of steel rods exhibiting maximum compression resistance is effective and possible to use in engineering practice. The advantage of the proposed shape of the bar is that it allows to increase the value of its load carrying capacity, i.e. it ensures the transfer of a higher value of compressive force than similar, solid struts of the same mass and length. The extent of the increase in the load capacity relative to the load capacity of the reference solid, cylindrical bar depends on the slenderness of the reference bar and ranges from 60% to 170%. Due to this very beneficial fact, it can be used wherever it is required to maintain a certain stiffness and an increased value of compressive force is desired, as well as in constructions where it is necessary to reduce weight while maintaining the adopted mechanical parameters, e.g. values of load bearing capacity. Final results achieved in the research were presented in the form of the flow chart allowing to design the compressed columns of optimum shape.

Research background: Individual car transport significantly burdens the environment, especially in the centres of large cities. There is pollution, traffic jams and an increase in overall noise. In the area of passenger car transport, legislation is being significantly tightened. Therefore, there are also increasing demands on public transport operators in the Czech Republic. Previously, most of the fleet consisted of diesel vehicles. These have been gradually replaced by drives that are significantly more environmentally friendly, such as the Compressed natural gas drive. The requirements defined in relation to the reduction of vehicle emissions are increasingly stricter. A number of cities, not only within the European Union, are addressing significant issues concerning the future of public transport. Purpose of the article: The main objective of the article is to demonstrate an in-depth analysis of the operation of transport vehicles in the Statutory City of Ostrava, both from the cost and environmental point of view. The comparison of transport means using CNG, electric and diesel propulsion is made. Specific factors such as the route profile or the environmental impact of the mode of transport are also taken into account. The extent of the data processed and the multidimensional nature of the assessment offer a unique analysis of the problem. The article provides an exact view of the advantages and disadvantages of operating specific means of transport. Everything is based on data on transport operations in the city of Ostrava (the Czech Republic, EU). Methods: The comprehensive evaluation is based on the application of methods from the field of financial accounting, evaluation of measured data from the operation of transport means and, last but not least, on the analysis of empirical data from the given area. The analysed data set is unique due to the time period, as is the multi-criteria evaluation methodology.  Findings & value added: The analysis performed demonstrated the economic viability of operating CNG vehicles. The main added value of the article is the unique multi-criteria evaluation procedure for the vehicles. The paper shows the evaluation of a complex decision problem in the transport field in the form of a case study implemented in the city of Ostrava. The evaluation results then consider both cost and environmental factors, which can be described as a comprehensive and highly innovative approach. The defined assessment can then be applied to other European and world metropolises.

However, practical implementation of these arrays is rather complex and their resolutions are limited to the beamwidth of the array pattern. Therefore, higher resolution and simpler methods are desirable. In this paper, the compressed sensing method is first applied to an initial fully filled array to randomly select the most prominent and effective elements which are used to form the sparse array. To keep the dimension of the sparse array equal to that of the fully filled array, the first and the last elements were excluded from the sparseness process. In addition, some constraints on the sparse spectrum are applied to increase estimation accuracy. The optimization problem is then solved iteratively using the iterative reweighted l1 norm. Finally, a simple searching algorithm is used to detect peaks in the spectrum solution that correspond to the directions of the arriving signals. Compared with the existing scanned beam methods, such as the minimum variance distortionless response (MVDR) technique, and with subspace approaches, such as multiple signal classification (MUSIC) and ESPIRT algorithms, the proposed sparse array method offers better performance even with a lower number of array elements and in severely noisy environments. Effectiveness of the proposed sparse array method is verified via computer simulations.

Opis:
An optimization method based on compressed sensing is proposed for uniformly excited linear or planar antenna arrays to perturb excitation of the minimum number of array elements in such a way that the required number of nulls is obtained. First, the spares theory is relied upon to formulate the problem and then the convex optimization approach is adopted to find the optimum solution. The optimization process is further developed by using iterative re-weighted l1- norm minimization, helping select the least number of the sparse elements and impose the required constraints on the array radiation pattern. Furthermore, the nulls generated are wide enough to cancel a whole specific sidelobe. Simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method and the required nulls are placed with a minimum number of perturbed elements. Thus, in practical implementations of the proposed method, a highly limited number of attenuators and phase shifters is required compared to other, conventional methods.
