    Opis:
    This article addresses the issue of the two-level nature of acts of the will, i.e. its ability to voluntarily refer to its own acts. First, we will examine the ancient sources of the concept of the two-level will (Plato and Augustine). Then, we will focus on the views of John Duns Scotus on the types of acts of will, with particular emphasis on the concept of non velle and its application in philosophical and theological issues. Against the backdrop of Scotus’s concept, we will examine the ways in which 14th-century thinkers engaged with his position and developed his account of the two-level acts of will and types of acts of will. Finally, the article discusses a significant change in the function of non velle and the use of this type of volitional act in 14th-century ethics by exploring the views of Buridan and Kilvington.

    Koncepcja autonomii osoby Harry’ego Frankfurta, uznawana obecnie za jedną z ważniejszych teorii autonomii, podkreśla istotną rolę zdolności podmiotu moralnego do świadomej refleksji nad sobą i swoim życiem i ufundowana jest na zdolności podmiotu do formułowania pragnień pierwszego oraz drugiego rzędu. Intrygujące, że już w myśli średniowiecznej daje się zauważyć propozycje, które budują prekursorski wobec współczesnych teorii obraz podmiotu moralnego, odnosząc się do złożonej struktury woli, jak również dwurzędowości jej aktów. W niniejszym artykule śledzę rozwój terminologii oraz argumentacji wykorzystywanej w tych średniowiecznych koncepcjach, które odwołują się do pragnień pierwszego oraz drugiego rzędu oraz rozróżnień między różnymi aktami woli. Skupiam się na koncepcjach powstałych do pierwszej połowy XIII wieku wprowadzających do debaty woluntarystycznej terminologię, niuanse pojęciowe oraz argumentację, która stanie się punktem wyjścia dla późnośredniowiecznych teorii woli.
    Harry Frankfurt’s concept of autonomy that has been acknowledged as one of the most important theories of autonomy underlines the essential role of a moral agent’s ability to reflect on herself and her life. The core element of the concept is the ability of a moral agent to formulate first as well as second order desires. Intriguing seems the fact that we can find the concepts referring to the complexity of the will and its first and second order acts already in medieval thought. In this paper I examine the development of the terminology and argumentation employed in these medieval concepts which analyze first and second order acts of the will as well as the subtle difference between various acts of the will. I focus on the concepts formulated until the first half of the 13th century pointing out to the terminology and arguments which became the point of departure for late medieval theories of the will.
