Opis:
Effectively optimizing dilation and erosion is an extensively studied but not completely resolved problem. In this paper, a new optimization algorithm is proposed to improve the efficiency of dilation and erosion. Four notions are given to define the edges for any simply connected structuring element (SE). An assistant algorithm is proposed to detect these edges. Based on these notions, three iteration equations can be derived, which redefine dilation and erosion as iteration calculation. Time complexity of the new algorithm is reduced to O(n³). In addition, the new algorithm is suitable for online applications without the decomposition of SE. Simulation shows that with the same parameters, the performance of the new algorithm is better than that of Yang's algorithm.

This paper presents a comparative analysis of complexity between the B-TREE and the Binary Search Algorithms, both theoretically and experimentally, to evaluate their efficiency in finding overlap of classes for students and teachers in the University Course Timetabling Problem (UCTP). According to the theory, B-TREE Search complexity is lower than Binary Search. The performed experimental tests showed the B-TREE Search Algorithm is more efficient than Binary Search, but only using a dataset larger than 75 students per classroom.

Established complexity measures typically operate at a single scale and thus fail to quantify inherent long-range correlations in real-world data, a key feature of complex systems. The recently introduced multiscale entropy (MSE) method has the ability to detect fractal correlations and has been used successfully to assess the complexity of univariate data. However, multivariate observations are common in many real-world scenarios and a simultaneous analysis of their structural complexity is a prerequisite for the understanding of the underlying signal-generating mechanism. For this purpose, based on the notion of multivariate sample entropy, the standard MSE method is extended to the multivariate case, whereby for rigor, the intrinsic multivariate scales of the input data are generated adaptively via the multivariate empirical mode decomposition (MEMD) algorithm. This allows us to gain better understanding of the complexity of the underlying multivariate real-world process, together with more degrees of freedom and physical interpretation in the analysis. Simulations on both synthetic and real-world biological multivariate data sets support the analysis.

The paper is an exposition of the information-centered approach to problems that are solved with uncertainty. The theory and application of the information-centered is called -complexity. The authors have introduced the basic quanities and fundamental invariant which they call the radius of information and which tells how well a problem can be solved. They present this quantities and contrast the informationcentered approach with the algorithm-centered approach.

Decomposition is the best method to analyze complicated systems. The whole system is divided into a set of smaller parts, i.e. subsystems. These items are connected to each other by input and output interfaces. Every subsystem could be analyzed using separate algorithms and procedures that are more suitable for solving the local task. In the article, a complicated electrical system is decomposed and the interaction decoupling mode is used to coordinate the local task solution. Each of the first–level subsystems, such as an optimization problem, is defined completely independently from the other problems. The subsystems are instructed to select the local input as well as the local interface output in an optimal fashion. The local task's solution depends not only on the internal subsystems’ parameters, but on the value of interfaces too. To achieve the global task solution, local tasks have to be coordinated using an appropriate coordination principle.

Opis:
System-based research remains an important yet usually outdated and internally contradictory approach in political science and international relations. Based on concepts borrowed from physiology, cybernetics, and general system theory, the system-based approach popularised in the 1960s was cast away as outdated and ill-focused. Despite those systems, the theory was developed in natural sciences, eventually creating a paradigm more applicable to domestic and international politics. The weakest element of past systems (like the one proposed by D. Easton) was that they did not allow for a sudden and catastrophic transformation and lacked emergence. This paper aims to present a model that would allow for the system’s ordinary and catastrophic transformation. The complex adaptive system features were defined using relevant literature on a paradigm of complexity. Connecting it with the propositions of D. Easton, R. Axelrod, and M. Cohen, as well as R. Jervis, such a model was constructed. The theoretical introduction is supplanted with a general case study of the early phases of the Arab Spring in Tunisia. The model mirrors the complex systems’ dynamics, considering the agent-structure problem.

Opis:
Purpose – This article aims to examine the complexity of the value added tax (VAT) in Germany and Poland. Research method – This paper uses a quantitative analysis of the VAT Act and a selected amendment to this Act in Germany and Poland. I consider the German and Polish language versions of the VAT Directive and the Vouchers Directive as a benchmark for comparing VAT complexity. A comparison of a number of law amendments and compliance costs in both countries enhances the analysis. Results – The VAT complexity in Poland significantly exceeds the complexity of the German VAT system. This is true for all analysed aspects. In Poland, the compliance costs of VAT are significantly higher than in Germany. The Polish VAT law is amended more frequently and is much more comprehensive than its German counterpart. This can be only partially justified by special regulations to combat tax fraud. The high VAT complexity in Poland is also due to the complicated language and structure of the law. Although the German translation of the Vouchers Directive includes more words than the Polish version, the Polish legislator needs about twice as many words as their German counterpart for its implementation. Originality /value – Tax law is often criticised for its complexity. This study is the first to use the VAT Directive for a comparative study of the VAT complexity and reveals that the Polish legislator uses considerably more text for similar content than their German counterpart.

Opis:
There is no set of constructs or measurement tools in the subject literature that would be widely accepted. In this paper three dimensions of the organisation’s environment namely dynamism, hostility, and complexity, were reviewed. These dimensions are common to most environment research but, especially on the native background, only a few researchers have attempted to synthesize these dimensions in the one research approach. The aim of the paper is synthesis of three dimensions of the organisation’s environment and an empirical verification of whether the existing business practice dimensions of the organisation’s environment correspond to the dimensions laid down and proposed on the theoretical level. In the paper, three dimensions of the organisation’s environment - dynamism, hostility, and complexity were characterised, a research tool developed for measuring them was presented. The approach uses data from a sample of fifty-three new technology-based firms in Poland. Factor analysis was used to explore the viability of these environmental dimensions. The results of the conducted research indicate that the organisation’s environment is a multidimensional construct and could be described by dynamism, hostility and complexity.

Opis:
Complexity has been an interesting research area for academics and businesses practices due to its relevance in determining the best practices and impacts to the supply network. The contribution of this research extend to the literature and put forward solutions for the industry since previous studies are neglecting whole network relations, which is highlighted as source of supply network complexity (SNC). Specifically, this research extends to enriching the literature and recommending solutions to the industry players since previous studies are neglecting important Inter Firm Relation (IFR) elements, formal inter-firm relation (FIFR) and informal inter-firm relations (IIFR), which are highlighted as a pertinent factor in this research. In this study, the Social Network Analysis (SNA) method was adopted to develop valid attribute for the measurement process and the embeddedness theory was used to evaluate the interrelationships among the proposed attributes. This study found that FIFR and IIFR have different effects towards the formation of SNS and consequently towards SNC. Finally, theoretical and industrial implications are also discussed. Methods: Traditional statistical tools focus on attributes of phenomenon as determinants for occurrence of economic payoff. Thus, traditional statistical analysis is not suitable to measure the impact of relations or connections among member of network contributing to network complexity. For the purpose of this research, the Social Network Analysis methodology was adopted to collect, analyse and interpret network data. Network survey was conducted to collect relational data among members of maritime industry supply network. Network data was analysed and interpreted using specialized social network program i.e. UCINET and NETDRAW. Statistical network measures such as centralization and density was applied to determine the relations between network complexity and network relations. Results: The findings of this study indicate that Inter Firm Relation (IFR), formal inter-firm relation (FIFR) and informal inter-firm relations (IIFR), which are highlighted as a pertinent factor in this research, have different effects towards the formation of SNS and consequently towards SNC. Conclusion: The results of the statistical network analysis indicate that, network complexity exist in different forms and structure, depending on the type of relations that formed the network in the first place. Consequently, what these mean are, managing network requires different types of resource and strategy as the level of the network complexity are different at different states of connectivity.

Eye tracking recordings could reveal the visual behavior for different cartographic visualization techniques, such as hill-shading, while at the same time eye tracking metrics (ETMs) can summarize the associated complexity levels in a concise and quantitative manner. In the present study, three different hill-shading methods, including:(i) the standard method based on ideal diffuse reflection, (ii) the Multidirectional ObliqueWeighted method – MDOW and (iii) the combination of a MDOW’s variation with standard hill-shading, are evaluated and ranked in terms of their perceived visual complexity. The performed examination is based on both eye tracking techniques and expert judgement procedures. A weighted combination of basic ETMs has been used, implemented by the Landscape Rating Index – LRI. The weights resulted from an experts’ judgement process where the opinions of experts in geoinformatics, cartography, geovisualization, experimental psychology, cognitive science, neuroscience and eye tracking were analyzed. Fifteen (15) individuals participated in an eye tracking experiment with hill-shading images produced by the three methods under evaluation, while 41 experts participated in an online questionnaire in order to collect all the analysis data. The final evaluation was based on the computation of three LRI models. The outcomes indicate that implementing hill-shading with more than one light sources results in similar perceptual behaviors, allowing for a seamless exploitation of the advantages of using multidirectional illumination.
