Opis:
The paper concerns single-sentence texts recorded in different languages according to similar structural schemes, known as proverbs. It focuses on comparing the semantic content of proverbs in Hausa and Polish, but also takes into account the way of illustrating the concepts expressed by means of these contents. The applied methodology draws attention to the words most frequently used in proverbs, which (referring to Wierzbicka 1997) are considered to be cultural keywords, that is: words with a special cultural status. They encode contents that are important to the way the particular community functions. Based on the collection of proverbs by Kirk-Greene (1966), Yunusa (1977), Kłosińska (2011) and Adalberg (1889-94), pairs of proverbs having the same meaning (message) and the way of imaging (the same key words) in Hausa and Polish, have been found. The occurrence of such pairs of proverbs (e.g. Matambayi ba ya ɓata – “Who asks, does not stray”, Rigakafi ta fi magani – “Prevention is better than cure”) in languages geographically and culturally distant evokes the question of universal values, independent of the natural and cultural environment. Examples will be presented along with translation and explanation of meaning.

Opis:
The article presents a combined approach towards a comparison of proverbs in different languages through the analysis of culture-specific concepts that are essential for coding the meaning of proverbs. The theory of culture keywords (Wierzbicka 1997) is adopted to the analysis of Hausa proverbs in a comparative perspective. The aim of the article is to indicate that proverbs are a representation of the linguistic image of the world and therefore may be subject to comparison in terms of the similarities and differences between languages and cultures. The word frequency analysis of 1505 Hausa proverbs led to identifying 55 items whose function can be specified as Hausa culture keywords. The presentation of 10 top items is to confirm their culture values and to identify 6 thematic areas which they represent. The presentation of 10 other keywords shows that the distinguished areas and their lexical representation may be used as methodological basis for comparative works on proverbs.

Opis:
Our study is based on the almost generally accepted idea that phraseology represents a “language of culture” which retains numerous elements that define the identity and mentality of a community (see Telija et.al.). Starting from research dedicated to phraseology (Coseriu, Cowie), we emphasize the importance of comparative studies (in this case, Romanian-Polish) in phraseology and for the development of linguistic and cultural skills of non-native Romanian speakers, in the teaching of Romanian literature. Based on studies and books dedicated to phraseological expressions in the Romanian and Polish languages and on lexicographic works, we are presenting: 1. Romanian and Polish phraseology with similar structure and similar overall meaning; 2. Romanian and Polish phraseology with similar structure, but different meaning; 3. pseudo-equivalent Romanian-Polish phraseology; 4. Romanian-Polish phraseology with the same overall meaning, but functioning on different stylistic registers of the two languages.
