Opis:
Many Eastern European countries, especially Russia and Turkey, share a common characterization of the so-called “torn countries”, a term first used by Samuel Huntington in 1993. Torn countries are those territories situated on the boundary of two different civilizations, West and East, sharing characteristics of both worlds while struggling to identify with either of them completely. While the individuals in these societies may choose one civilization over the other, their societies suffer from a significant socio-cultural difference within the civilizations, reflecting the individual as a major confusion over their identity. The best expressions of such identity struggles can be seen in the literary masterpieces of torn countries. This paper’s primary purpose is to compare Orhan Pamuk and Fyodor Dostoevsky’s selected works to identify some common themes between the two authors. Snow, İstanbul, Other Colors and Nights of Plague by Pamuk and Demons, Crime and Punishment and The Idiot by Dostoevsky form the basis of this comparison. Pamuk and Dostoevsky’s novels function as testimonials that Russian and Turkish cultural histories share many commonalities as torn countries. Comparing these authors’ selected works would allow readers to glimpse some of the themes cross-cutting Russian and Turkish cultures and show them how the two countries fared in the past two centuries against dominant political and social movements.

Opis:
Many questions arise in the understanding of texts produced in different locales within the bigger ambit of world literature. It is here that the need arises to apply various modes of enquiry in understanding them. Comparative literature can become a common platform for understanding different cultures and literatures. The present paper is a modest attempt to introduce the concept of comparative literature to a fresh learner and then to evaluate literatures from two different contexts (Dalit and African American) together for practical purposes. A model is proposed for discussing comparative literature in the classroom. Thus, the paper becomes authentic and unique research, bringing theory and practice together.

There is a sizeable body of scholarship concerning the ekphrastic relation of literature to painting – however, there has been ascending interest in other sources of inspiration, such as photography. The aim of this paper is to explore whether the categories used to analyse ekphraseis of paintings might apply to the ekphraseis inspired by photography in Sara Baume’s A Line Made by Walking (2017), considering that they provide insightful information regarding the creative process of the protagonist and her inner state. The notion of ekphrasis (Clüver, Vieira, Webb) and theories of photography (Barthes, Machado, Sontag) will be used as theoretical support.

Opis:
In recent years, comparative literature has affected a lively response to the dynamic transformations of its socio-cultural environment: it has declared the death of the old discipline and the beginning of a new one, and has increasingly set foot into the realm of the modern digital laboratory. It has, however, too seldom made use of a historical analysis of its own origins, which could have an impact on how future tasks and opportunities in comparative studies are perceived. This paper looks back to the rhetorical legacy of the category of comparison — one of the traditions that led to the institutionalization of comparative studies in the nineteenth century, and which could be useful in an attempt to rewrite the discipline’s history, particularly if grounded in translation studies.

It compares and contrasts the association between World Literature and Comparative Literature to that between International American Studies and the American Studies movement emerging out of the United States. It goes on to argue that World Literature is anchored to a universalist teleology, one linked historically to an idealist intellectual genealogy. By contrast, International American Studies involves a more materialist, multidirectional emphasis that differentiates it from the U.S. appropriation of globalization to further its own strategic interests. Opis:
The Polish version of the article was published in “Roczniki Humanistyczne,” vol. 60 (2012), issue 1. This essay proposes a synthesis of the major themes and issues of Polish Dantism, with a particular reference to the 20th century and beyond. The author retraces the traditional motifs which connect 20th-century authors to the Romantic tradition, and discusses some examples (Gombrowicz, Vincenz, Miłosz) in a broader comparative context (referring specifically to Eliot, Mandelstam, Brodsky). The author argues that the Modernist ethical idea of “necessary Dante” tends to be gradually replaced by a Postmodernist notion of “aesthetic Dante,” with a flowering of new translations—not only of the Divina Commedia. These works restore a balance between Polish literary Dantism and Dante studies. In this sense, the Polish situation displays a lot of similarity to the European and international context, abundant with trends and concerns which go far beyond those of a national language and literature.

A digital communiqué operates with GUI not to depict, describe or structure the meanings but, above all, to transfer them. At the moment of clicking, that is, when a specific question is being asked by the user (customer), specific semiotically varied content is downloaded and displayed on the screen in accordance with the pre-designed, graphic template. Thus, graphical interface treats writing and image on the one hand as heterogeneous units – stored in databases, in a way that makes them quick and easy to find; on the other hand – heteronomous, that is, affecting each other at the level of presentation and manipulation of the message. Graphical edition skillfully combines the expectations of recipients concerning the access to the message: on the one hand – precise (along the lines of the language), on the other – economic, reducing (iconic), and it merges in this way two structures of reception, considered in our culture to be different. Pragmatic functionality of digital message is understood as accurate and synthetic mediation, which results in further analogous features from the level of semiotics and semantics, where the highlighted three planes of the communiqué circulate in the feedback loop.

This paper has two aims: on the one hand, to compare Joan Oliver’s Bestiari with works such as Bestiaire ou cortège d’Orphée by Guillaume Apollinaire (1911), “Bestiario” by Ramón del Valle-Inclán (in La Pipa de Kif, 1919), The animaux et leurs hommes. The hommes et leurs animaux by Paul Éluard (1920) and, above all, Histoires naturelles by Jules Renard (1896), in search of possible influences and coincidences. The other aim is to classify and analyze the poems in order to clarify the intention with which Oliver wrote the Bestiari and to relate it to the didactic and moral purpose of medieval Bestiaries and ancient Fables.

The figure of the prostitute occupies a privileged position in contemporary Spanish and Polish literature. Departing from the comparative perspective, especially employing the category of world literature according to David Damrosch, the paper aims to explain the relation between the presence of the prostitute as a character in the literary representation of the transition to democracy. To achieve this, the author conducts an analysis of two novels: Un día volveré by Juan Marsé published in 1982 and Niskie Łąki by Piotr Siemion from 1999. In both texts, the analyzed female characters refer to the disillusionment with the moment of the transition to democracy.

translation studies
comparative literature
Opis:
The convergence, especially in the last two decades, of translation studies and comparative literature is a phenomenon that brings together two disciplines with troubled histories. Although both are in fact much older disciplines, a fuller recognition of their importance (at least in the context of the American academia) is a matter of the last couple of decades. The last two decades also saw a heated discussion over the state of comparative literature as a discipline: with a great sense of ethical urgency, scholars of comparative literature in the American academia, influenced to a large part by postcolonial studies, have sparked a debate which renewed interest in world literature and gave rise to attempts at re-envisioning the study of literature.
