Opis:
In this paper I use the different measures of species mobility to describe the fine small-scale dynamics of calcareous grassland built mainly by perennial species and developed in the highly heterogeneous habitat of calcareous rocks. The community showed the low dynamics on a plot-scale (100 m2) and a high one on the scale of 1 m2. However, the studied species differed greatly in calculated indices: turnover rate, (T; 6-64), residence time (RT; 0.5-21.8 y) and carousel time (CT; 4-420 y) as well as the observed tendency to persistence on the spots (PERSIST) and their re-colonisation (AGAIN). This allowed to distinguish the three groups of species: (1) "core species" characterized by high frequency and low T and high CT and RT values, which determine the low dynamics of a community on the plot scale, (2) species with intermediate mobility rate and (3) the group with high mobility rate. The observed cumulative frequencies of all the studied species (CFobs) were much lower than expected under the random re-assignation model (CFRR). Moreover, they were also lower than those predicted by random immigration model (CFRI). The results showed that the "complex carousel" model rather than "single carousel" one explained better the small-scale dynamics of calcareous grasslands.

Opis:
Harmful cyanobacterial efflorescence is of growing global concern and its prediction and management require a better understanding of the growth control factors and dominance of cyanobacteria. The Zit-Emba reservoir located in the North-East of Algeria, was constructed to provide drinking water, irrigation, and fishing. The vertical and seasonal distribution variation of cyanobacteria community associated with environmental factors was comprehensively investigated from April 2016 to December 2016 at five depths, based on a seasonal sampling. The cyanobacteria communities of this reservoir are composed of seven genera belonging to five orders. The average proportion of Microcystis to total cyanobacteria population was 43%, followed by Woronichinia 21%, Planktothrix 16%, Dolichospermum 13%, Oscillatoria 5%, and the remainder (Merismopedia, Spirulina) 2%. The average cyanobacterial abundance was 2702 cells/mL, ranging from 360 to 65 795 cells/mL and this abundance exceeds the alert level 1 throughout the year. The most recurrent periods of increase took place from spring to summer and autumn. However, the vertical distributions of cyanobacteria displayed a similar profile each season, and abundances tended to decrease with depth. The results of the statistical analysis suggested that the most abundant of cyanobacterial genera were positively related to chlorophyll-a and water temperature and negatively with the concentrations of NO3-N, NH4-N, and NO2-N. This demonstration of toxigenic cyanobacteria in this drinking water production dam involves regular monitoring of the cyanobacterial communities and cyanotoxins in raw water.

Opis:
Among the waste produced by municipal wastewater treatment plants, the largest technological problem is caused by the excessive sludge, the management of which consumes almost half of the costs of the entire installation. Regardless of the final disposal route, which may be, for example, reclamation of degraded areas, the the sludge derived from a wastewater treatment plant should be firstly subjected to a series of processes aimed at: reducing its volume, improving selected physical properties, recovering energy, rot preventing (stabilization) or eliminating epidemiological threats (hygenizing). These goals could be implemented using commonly known technologies, including: dewatering, liming, thermoconditioning, methanogenesis or composting. One of the alternative solutions is the use of ozonation of raw excess sludge, which, in principle, may lead to the simultaneous resolution of several above-mentioned problems, such as: drainage properties improvement, increase the bioavailability of organic matter for biogas production, as well as the removal of undesirable microorganisms. Confirmation of the hygenizing effects usually requires arduous microbiological methods; therefore, the fast and reliable tools of molecular biology could prove their usefulness in this case. In this study, the possibility of determining the dynamics of selected groups of microorganisms (including changes in total bacteria amount, Proteobacteria, Bacteroidetes, Firmicutes and Actinobacteria) after sewage sludge ozonation, by using the semi-quantitative RealTime polymerase chain reaction (qPCR), wasinvestigated.

Opis:
The article studies quantitative and spatial dynamics of the Russian speaking population of the post soviet Ukraine. The factors accelerating the demographic shrinkage of the Russians of the country by 3 million people during 1989–2001 are analyzed. On the basis of a comparative analysis of the results of the 2001 Ukrainian census and the data of the ethnic and linguistic surveys of the Ukrainian population the conclusion is drawn that the core role in a prompt reduction of the number of the Russians belong to the assimilation. The analysis of the dynamic trends of the last several years allows affirming that within the borders of the modern Ukraine without the Crimea and the Donbas which is politically independent from Kyiv there may live about 4.1–4.5 million Russians. The study of eventual middle term prospects prove that by 2030 the given  number may reduce to 3.3–3.7 million people. The important role in this process will play all three factors of the number dynamics: natural decline, outward migration flow, assimilation. But the core role in the demographic shrinkage of the Russian community belongs to the assimilation or the transition from the Russian to the Ukrainian self-identity of a part of the biological and ethnic community of Ukraine. However the number of the Russians in the country recorded by all ensuing censuses of the population was lower than the real ethnic and cultural presence of the “Russian world” in Ukraine as the above mentioned identity transfer was not accompanied by an acculturation. The Russian language and culture not only dominate in the Russian environment but also keep a weighty role within the dominant country group. Only by prolongation of several decades of tough of a severe anti-Russian course Ukraine is capable of undermining the social and cultural potential of the Russian world.

The paper presents results of a study conducted in Ińsko Landscape Park in the years 2002 and 2003. The study has confirmed the occurrence of 11 amphibian species, which coincides with results obtained previously by other researchers. The presence of two amphibian species from the “Red List of Threatened Species in Poland”, namely Triturus cristatus and Bombina bombina has been confirmed. Another important result of the study is the confirmation of the occurrence of Bufo calamita in the studied area. Finally, the paper presents the dynamics of occurrence of selected species.

Opis:
The circulation of Atlantic water along the European continental slope, in particular the inflow into the North Sea, influences North Sea water characteristics with consequent changes in the environment affecting plankton community dynamics. The long-term effect of fluctuating oceanographic conditions on the North Sea pelagic ecosystem is assessed. It is shown that (i) there are similar regime shifts in the inflow through the northern North Sea and in Sea Surface Temperature, (ii) long-term phytoplankton trends are influenced by the inflow only in some North Sea regions, and (iii) the spatial variability in chemicophysical and biological parameters highlight the influence of smaller scale processes.
