Opis:: Verbal communication for specific purposes during language classes invariably involves the decision making process. Decisions primarily concern specialized content and linguistic expressions. The participants in the communication, i.e. teachers and learners, must there-fore have an appropriate level of language competence and expertise. This specialist knowledge, defined as specific knowledge of a professional area and activities related to it, includes both substantial knowledge of the field, knowledge of terminology and discourse structures. Expertise plays an essential role in every aspect of teaching a foreign language for business purposes, as oral communication skills are developed on the basis of specialist knowledge. Broadening specialist knowledge is hence both means and purpose. Deficiencies in specialist knowledge can be seen in the performance of communication tasks when it hinders the ability to reach an agreement. The aim of this article is to analyse the role of expertise in oral communication for specific purposes in business language classes with reference to the author's own research.

Opis:: The so-called latest technologies in the world of today constitute an indispensable component of teaching or learning foreign languages. Given as an obvious element of social life, they are regarded by teachers as effi cient tools for acquiring and perfecting various skills, such as communicative ones. The dynamic development of the multimedia, also in the area of language teaching, incessantly faces language teachers with new challenges, whose aim is to fully utilise the potential of the latest technologies in the process of language teaching that respects learners’ individual needs. The aim of this article is to present possible ways of using the multimedia, helpful in drawing language lesson plans for vocational language groups. The article deals with the area of communication and information technologies used in the classroom as these have recently undergone changes. Also, a discussion is presented of the advantages and disadvantages of the latest multimedia used in the didactic process. The article also seeks to answer the question how much the latest technologies cater for the needs of specialist glottodidactics.

Opis:: Once a demand of the student movement of the 1960s, the call for more practical relevance in higher education is being expressed again in student surveys. This has gained importance across Europe, not least as a consequence of the implementation of the Bologna Reform. Alongside employability and competence orientation, practical orientation has become one of the central issues in the debate about the curricular focus of university programmes. This paper seeks to briefly outline the concepts behind the keywords employability, competence orientation and practice orientation and discuss how they relate to the traditional (self-)understanding of universities. On the basis of examples it will then consider what concrete contributions Applied Linguistics as an academic discipline (along with its sub-disciplines) can make to the practical orientation of degrees in languages.

Opis:: The article contributes to current discourses on the opportunities, challenges and limits for foreign and specialised language didactics in the context of the closer cooperations between Universities and the wider economic and social environment. It presents and discusses the background, origins, results and perspectives of the research project “The Language Barometer of Lodz 2021. Employees of the modern business services sector”. The research questions of the survey are primarily directed at the required foreign language skills of the target group, areas of application of foreign languages, the knowledge and specialist areas to be mastered, language training in the company, as well as the aspect of multilingualism in the context of professional communication. The paper will present and discuss the global results of the survey, and also provide a full package of anonymous raw data collected during the survey for possible further analysis and study. The data obtained in the survey can be used for projects and research initiatives on various aspects of specialised communication in an intercultural work environment, but may also find application in, among other things, the development or modification of curricula at different levels of learning, the creation of specialisation modules, language courses, workshops or educational materials.

Opis:: This paper addresses the question of the specificity of professional (specialist) communication among graduates of the German Studies working in business services in Poland. The research results presented are based on the global results of the project “The Language Barometer of Lódz 2021. Employees in the Modern Business Services Sector.” The target group are employees of companies in the Polish business services sector and, at the same time, graduates of the Master’s degree programme in German at the University of Lódz. The research questions of the survey are primarily directed at the required foreign language skills of the target group, areas of application of foreign languages, the knowledge and specialist areas to be mastered, language training in the company and multilingualism in professional communication.

Opis:: In a society increasingly mediated by technology, the medium has created unparalleled opportunities. As a result, it has refocused educators’ attention on how technological literacy is both an essential learning outcome in all higher education programs, and the intermediary, the means to achieve the digital competences expected from employees. In the field of English for Specific Purposes, and at a time when technology is perceived to enable quick and effective access to a vast number of sources of information and knowledge, teaching a language confronts teachers and students with divergent views that converge into what we perceive to be interconnected paths. We critically reflect upon these interconnected paths in order to obtain further insights on how technology, namely Machine Translation and Computer-Aided Translation, is perceived by business communicators who are learning English in an ESP environment. Within the premises that translation is an act of intercultural communication, our case study addresses mirrored perceptions of the English language, the act of translation, and the use of technological tools. Our study draws on both perspectives and discusses how mirrored images of students and teachers converge through project-based approaches, rooted in practical, short visual tasks with a clear and immediately visible purpose.

Opis:: The modern working world is characterized by increasingly complex external and internal pluri- and multilingualism, which poses growing challenges for professional communication. In order to be able to systematically capture this increasing complexity, a separate model is required. In this model, on the one hand, the individual languages and their linguistic varieties of external and internal multilingualism and, on the other hand, the first-, second- and foreign-language competencies of individual persons are entered in a matrix. In this way, multilingual settings of professions or workplaces as well as multilingual profiles of individual persons can be described in a differentiate manner and corresponding political and didactic measures can be taken.

Opis:: In the article, the author discusses the reasons and processes of adaptation of borrowings, paying special attention to the last decade of the 20th century and the beginnings of the 21st century which are characterized by a significant amount of borrowings from Western languages and this process is often carried out through the Russian language. The analysis has showed that the abbreviations, though unexplored and unstructured, name new phenomena of reality and function actively in Belarusian technolects.
W artykule autorka omawia przyczyny oraz procesy przyswajania zapożyczeń, kierując szczególną uwagę na ostatnie dziesięciolecie XX wieku i pierwsze dekady XXI wieku, które charakteryzują się znaczną ilością zapożyczeń z języków zachodnich i nierzadko proces ten odbywa się za pośrednictwem języka rosyjskiego. Analiza pokazała, że skrótowce, mimo że niezbadane i nieusystematyzowane, nazywają nowe zjawiska rzeczywistości i aktywnie funkcjonują w białoruskich technolektach.

Opis:: The university’s relations with the social and economic environment are becoming an increasingly important aspect of higher education, in addition to the university’s traditional missions. In addition to education and research, the so-called third mission of the university is developing, which includes relations with the business sector, the public sector and the non-governmental sector, i.e. the socio-economic environment. The goal of the University’s cooperation with employers is to share experiences and strengthen cooperation with entrepreneurs and employers. The latter can co-design teaching programs, conduct courses and workshops, organize internships or present their own solutions to various research problems. Therefore, the aim of this paper is to show the role and importance of foreign and specialized language teaching in the context of interdisciplinary studies oriented to the needs of the labour market. This is promoted by the study conducted within the framework of the project Language Barometer Łódź 2021.
