Based on a sample of comments gleaned from the Onet.pl portal, the author discusses positive and negative evaluations (axiological charge) found in internet language, and she examines some of the language devices used in such evaluations. In internet comments, it is definitely negative evaluation that prevails, and the positive evaluation of a single object creates only a background for a negative object. Samples which encode aggression and insults can also be found in the data. In the material under inspection, Internet users mploy all sorts of language devices used in an evaluative function; most of them are illustrative of economic, social and ethical values. Along with these values, emotions are also frequently expressed. Internet users resort to all sorts of language devices to signal evaluative functions, a number of them are marked and illustrate a colloquial style.

The paper discusses selected reactions to the Nobel Prize for Literature awarded to Olga Tokarczuk. The author focuses on the dispute about the legitimacy and justification of the Swedish Academy’s decision, highlighting the sceptical opinions, in some cases challenging the Academy’s members’ verdict. Referring to a book by James F. English on cultural prizes, the author recalls the role of public controversies as an essential tool of influencing the general public. He also compares the situation of two winners of the Nobel Prize in Literature (Olga Tokarczuk – for 2018, Peter Handke – for 2019), announced on the same day. Concluding, the author seeks to present the most important aspects of the dispute on the position and influence of Tokarczuk’s literary output.

This article analyses the way Ukrainian politicians express themselves, which is different from the general principles of rhetoric: comments often contain verbal aggression towards the opponent. By analyzing Ukrainian political discourse I managed to track the imprudence fond in the formulation of comments for different reasons – an inability to report or inability to control emotions, as well as a direct and deliberate strategy of applying all possible means of modeling verbal aggression, especially the use of invectives. The postulates of the author are confirmed by illustrative material – examples of statements made by Ukrainian politicians from different parties and groups, selected from the transcripts of the Supreme Council of Ukraine (Verkhovna Rada) from the year 2013.

The goal of this article is to comment on the fragments of Aleksander Pieńkowski’s autobiography concerning his stay in Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan. Pieńkowski, a shopkeeper in a Polish village, was one of the Polish citizens in areas of Poland annexed by the Soviets after 17 September 1939, who were arrested, investigated, tortured by KGB and deported in 1940 to labour camps in northern Russia. After the amnesty for the Polish deportees in 1941, he was allowed to leave his labour camp in Pechora and go to Uzbekistan to be recruited into the Polish Army. Since the southern Soviet Republics of the USSR were not prepared to deal with the great waves of Poles and Polish Jews arriving in Central Asia, he spent some time at various railway stations in Uzbekistan and was sent to southern Kazakhstan where he worked in a co-operative farm, but mostly served local Kazakhs, before he could finally cross the Soviet-Iranian border in 1942.

The article focuses on the analysis of social reactions that manifest themselves in the form of comments of Internet users regarding mothers who killed their children. The aim of the study was an attempt to create a typology of Internet users judging a “killer mother”. The analysis includes anonymous Internet users who posted comments under the articles of two portals: Wp.pl (”Wirtualna Polska”) and Onet.pl (”Onet”). Comments on three selected cases of murders of minors in Poland over the decade (2003-2013) were submitted.

The purpose of this study is to describe the current foreign language (FL) assessment and feedback practices as reported by 213 experienced primary teachers in Slovenia and Spain. An ad hoc questionnaire was designed, validated and administered to 113 Slovenian and 100 Spanish teachers. The data were collected and analysed with the use of descriptive and inferential statistics. Among the most relevant findings, it is noteworthy that Spanish teachers focus on providing feedback on receptive skills while their Slovenian colleagues pay more attention to productive skills. Also, results from both groups reveal a lack of FL pronunciation feedback and scarce attention to interactive aspects of communication.

The research described here was performed on the background of the geopolitical fluctuations in Eastern Europe and the annexation of Crimea by Russia. These events caused fear of pro-Russian propaganda particularly in the so-called Internet hybrid-trolls, i.e., commentators who are on the payroll of Russian state agencies who disrupt internet discussion boards with massive pro-Russian information and opinions. This paper describes methodology of identifying possible hybrid-trolls, data gathering from the biggest Latvian online news sites (delfi.lv, apollo.lv, tvnet.lv) that provide information in Latvian and Russian language, and analysis of the data by means of quantitative analysis as well as qualitative, that included content analysis and a case study. The analysis shows that the presence of pro-Russian hybrid trolls is inconclusive. However, following the outlined methodology some cases were recorded. Quantitative as well as qualitative analyses demonstrate that the overall presence and exposure of the alleged trolls in the given period was insignificant and the influence of trolls on public opinion highly questionable.

The article is devoted to researching cultures through a communicative ideal or absolute communicative value that covers the culture's basic communication rules shared by all speakers. This absolute ideal determines the concept of 'good' and 'bad' speech and is invariably considered when any language or speech unit is used. The intentional structure, themes and style of the communicative ideal cover all types, forms and genres of phatic and non-phatic communication. Communicative ideal also determines the poetics of human communication within this culture. It's possible to discover a communicative ideal through the language idioms which are formed by lexical units of the language naming the key value concepts of this culture. Good material can also be gained from various reflexives or metalanguage comments, phrases about the language and speech which belong to various spheres and types of communication. It may also be valuable to study the characters of national (Russian, English, Polish) literature who may be viewed as the models of the ideal communicative partners within these cultures. The article discusses the probability of experimental study of a communicative ideal. It is also important that a communicative ideal occupies a significant place in the system of statements about the types of the national cultures which are formulated in a semantic primitive language. Thus, communicative ideal is formed by values described in a semantic primitive language through simple affirmative formulas: 'It's good if...'. Communicative ideal as a rule is rather simple and clear for every speaker and is usually not an object of description and discussion. This mainly differentiates the communicative ideal from various communicative scenarios. However, a communicative ideal can also vary, at least, in some cultures. The typology of communicative concepts and values based on the field model where the centre corresponds with the communicative ideal and the periphery - particular communicative scenarios, enables to learn different types of communicative concepts variation for the centre and periphery.

This paper examines how the Front National’s electoral victories could be explained, partially, in terms of a new discursive rhetoric adopted by Marine Le Pen. In order to compare rhetorical strategies used by both Marine and Jean-Marie Le Pen and their impact on their followers, we use comparable data, which consist of press articles published during the presidential campaigns of each politician and postings by online discussants related to interviews. Using corpus linguistics tools and lexical semantics, we assess how differently both leaders position themselves emotionally and how this emotional positioning is reconstructed within the postings of the viewers. Although no important quantitative difference can be observed in the number of emotion key-words they used respectively, a shift in both politicians’ rhetoric positioning can be observed when analyzing the context in which these keywords are embedded. If Jean-Marie Le Pen focuses on negative feelings towards the Other (anger, resentment), Marine Le Pen promotes a positive ethos (empathy) in order to detoxify the image of her party and broaden her electoral base.

The role of the media in polarizing the debate on immigration has been subject to a growing amount of research; yet little is known about whether and how online comment sections related to news articles on immigration reshape the journalistic narrative. This study examines readers’ reactions to the media coverage by employing a quantitative content analysis of over 6,000 users’ comments responding to 128 online news articles on immigration. It concludes that generally the discussants’ perspective does not differ significantly from the medium’s framing of the issue with one important exception: the human rights frame accentuated by the medium is strictly refused by the discussants. The discussants also bring the economic and cultural aspects of immigration into the debate. The article thus contributes to a more general understanding of the role the users’ discussions play in shaping the debates on controversial political issues.

The article presents an interesting linguistic phenomenon from the Bulgarian internet area. The comments under articles, which subjects are Bulgarian political ethnic parties as well as political events in Turkey, contain increased number of words of Turkish origin. They can be classifi ed in several subject groups. Not only lexical means are observed but also word-formation means, such as suffi x -оглу (Биневоглу). The users also are authors of diff erent kind of linguistic innovations, such as phrase innovation (бял кахър – баш кара кахър) or proverbial innovation (Който плаща гранта, той поръчва кючека).

Menschen verletzen andere nicht nur mit Waffen, sondern auch mit Worten, die als Waffe gebraucht werden können. In der Sprache lässt sich eine Menge sprachlicher Einheiten finden, die der emotionalen Verletzung dienen. Dazu gehören u. a. Vulgarismen, Schimpfwörter bzw. Schimpfnamen und Flüche, die mit der Absicht gebraucht werden, anderen zu schaden. Auch im Flüchtlingsdiskurs sind solche Einheiten zu finden, die negative Einstellungen gegenüber Flüchtlingen ausdrücken und mithilfe von bestimmten Sprachmitteln verbalisiert werden. Sie kommen vor allem in Alltagsgesprächen und in Internetkommentaren vor, die spontan im Netz geäußert werden. Darüber hinaus werden bestimmte lexikalische Einheiten, die als neutrale Ausdrücke vorkommen, um einen aggressiven bzw. pejorativen Charakter erweitert. Meine Präsentation hat zum Ziel, bestimmte Ausdrücke für Flüchtlinge zu präsentieren, die in deutschen und polnischen Kommentaren der Internetnutzer vorhanden sind. Kommentare stammen aus Webseiten der Online-Presse, wo sie unter bestimmten Artikeln hinzugefügt wurden, die der Flüchtlingsproblematik bzw. dem Flüchtlingsleben gewidmet sind. Anhand der Analyse wird es möglich sein, auf bestimmte thematische Bereiche hinzuweisen, die beim Sprechen über Flüchtlinge zum Ausdruck gebracht werden. Diese haben ein beleidigendes Potenzial und können von Flüchtlingen für verletzend gehalten werden. Darüber hinaus kann man darauf eingehen, dass sie ein bestimmtes negatives Bild der Flüchtlinge erstellen bzw. weiterreproduzieren können.
People hurt others not only with weapons, but also with words that can be used as weapons. In language, a lot of linguistic units can be found that serve the emotional injury. These include vulgarisms, swear words or swear names and curses used with the intention of harming others. Also in the refugee discourse can be found such units that express negative attitudes towards refugees and are verbalized with the help of certain means of language. They occur mainly in everyday conversations and in Internet comments that are spontaneously expressed on the net. In addition, certain lexical units, which occur as neutral expressions, are extended by an aggressive or pejorative character. My presentation aims to present certain expressions for refugees that are present in German and Polish comments of Internet users. Comments come from online press websites, where they have been added under certain articles about refugee issues or refugee life. On the basis of the analysis, it will be possible to point out certain thematic areas that are expressed to the refugees topics. These have an offensive potential and can be considered hurtful by refugees. In addition, it can be pointed out that they can create or reproduce a certain negative image of the refugees.

In this paper we (re-)examine the role of deliberate metaphors in the public discourse. Based on an analysis of metaphorical comments to the articles reporting on a dispute between the Croatian Prime Minister and Minister of Finance, we argue that in addition to a number of established discursive functions, metaphor may perform a therapeutic function aiding commenters in working through their emotions. Our analyses of the course that comments take shows that they are not structured according to a usual turn-taking logic, but rather on the basis of the coherence of the emotions shared by the commenters. Moreover, the tripartite internal structure of the comments (identifying the critical event, running the blend, possibly offering a solution to the critical event) is aimed at symbolically delegitimizing politicians, putting the author in charge of the experience, thus enabling him/her to work through it. Theoretically, such a view suggests that on the discourse level it is not necessarily metaphor that is used as the structuring device, but that emotion can structure metaphor.

In March 2020, most sports competitions in the world were suspended due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Fan demand for information about top athletes could not be fully satisfied traditionally, that is why social media have grown in popularity. This article aims to identify the factors that affect the engagement of sports fans on social media and is based on the example of Instagram. The number of likes, comments as well as the number of likes and comments divided by the number of followers (appropriate engagement rates), were taken into account as engagement indicators. The results clearly show what types of posts generated the most engagement.
W marcu 2020 roku większość zawodów sportowych na świecie została zawieszona z powodu pandemii COVID-19. W tej sytuacji zapotrzebowanie kibiców na informacje o najlepszych sportowcach nie mogło być w pełni zaspokojone w sposób tradycyjny, czego wynikiem był wzrost popularności mediów społecznościowych. Celem artykułu jest identyfikacja czynników wpływających na zaangażowanie fanów sportu w mediach społecznościowych, bazując na przykładzie Instagrama. Jako wskaźniki uwzględniono liczbę polubień i komentarzy, a także liczbę polubieni i komentarzy podzieloną przez liczbę followersów (właściwe wskaźniki zaangażowania). Wyniki przeprowadzonego badania pokazują jakie typy postów generowały największe zaangażowanie.
