Opis:
Jindřich Polák’s film Tomorrow I’ll Wake Up and Scald Myself with Tea (Zítra vstanu a opařím se Cajeme) of 1977 is neither the first nor the last attempt to “detonate” an atomic bomb by the Czech filmmakers. However, this science fiction comedy uses the Wells’s concept of time travel to entertain a viewer with what the contemporary discourse calls the counterfactual history or simply considerations on “what if...”. The film was made in the peak period of normalization, thus all the historiosophical, ideological or political allusions are deeply hidden. Despite the futuristic context, diegesis is recognizable and contemporary at the same time, and thus full of ambiguous motivations of characters. The atomic bomb, therefore, is not merely a decorative artifact around which the main characters move.

Opis:
This article is an attempt at outlining key aesthetic standards of interior design of the 1950s and 1960s on the basis of examples exhibited in the Polish and foreign romantic comedies of that time. Some distinguishing features of 1960s Polish aesthetics were the characteristic abstract language, organic form, asymmetry, diagonal lines, arrangements based on “A” and “X” letter outlines and lively colours. Furniture design used new materials mostly plywood and plastics such as polyvinyl chloride and epoxy resins. The 1960s, called “small stabilization” by design historians, were slightly different. Shops offered a variety of new products designed by Polish creators – such as furniture, home appliances, tools and machines. New Polish industrial design of 1960s is represented by the RAMONA and EWA radios and the BAMBINO record player, whereas sectional furniture – especially SYSTEM MK designed by Bogusława and Czesław Kowalski, better known as “the Kowalskis’ furniture” – became the icon of the decade. Polish and foreign romantic comedies from 1950s and 1960s are an excellent iconographic source of information on how interior design changed in the second half of the 20th century, and specifically on how living space was organized and adapted for private and public purposes. In Poland, attempts were made to use all the “design innovations” coming from the west, however, the immutably closed Polish borders prevented them from spreading freely. We had to use local designers. In the 2nd half of the twentieth century, a period which Prof Irena Huml called “the invasion of modernity” started. The doctrine of socialist realism was rejected and the focus was on modernity. Innovation became the most desirable feature of a work of art, and modernity the most important concept.

The purpose of this paper was to examine the verbal expression of anger in Croatian comedy films and also to find textual and prosodic elements that provoke the viewer’s exhilaration. On the textual level analysis includes elements with which anger causes exhilaration and shows that such anger most often expresses superiority and is also unexpected which often occurs as a result of exaggeration. Due to the specific genre of comedy, i.e. its guaranteed lack of seriousness, the viewers are not aware of high presence of anger in film comedies. Comedy requires a different insight to life situations and a reinterpretation that leads to pleasant emotions.

Opis:
Polish cinema of the 1960s presented a specific vision of Warsaw, different from earlier and later ones, although it contained some solid motifs for the entire PRL era. These include emphasizing the uniqueness of Warsaw, the war past as an inseparable part of the city’s identity (though in the 1960s with a slightly different meaning) or the problem of getting a flat. The separateness and specificity of the then created images of the capital was related to the political specificity of the decade, the cultural and social moment of Warsaw development, the domination of realism that made the message authentic and genological issues – the main role in creating the image of the city was played by comedy. These images, however, were sometimes surprisingly subversive, breaking the dominant image.

Opis:
Audio description (AD) is an additional soundtrack in a film containing concise, verbal information about what is happening on the screen. The language of the AD should be appropriate to the genre of the film lexically and stylistically. This means that the language of AD in film comedies should contain some verbal ‘signals’ of the comic as an aesthetic category. The author of the presented research has attempted to analyse lexical and stylistic means of conveying situational comic and character comic as the two main types of comic, apart from the verbal one expressed directly in the characters’ speech. The material for the research included the following Soviet film comedies: We are from jazz (directed by K. Shakhnazarov, 1983), Autumn marathon (directed by G. Daneliya, 1979), and The twelve chairs (directed by L. Gaidai, 1971). The analysis proved that the verbal track of the AD reflects the most important peripeteia of the characters, and together with them the features of the characters (appearance, character traits), the manner of their behaviour. The set of llinguistic and stylistic means is determined by the type of the comedy.

The article introduces the concept of verbal comedy and analyzes the means to achieve a given phenomenon. The mechanism of creating humor in comedies was mentioned and the difficulties encountered by the translator when translating texts containing verbal jokes were mentioned. Examples of dialogue fragments found in the films of Juliusz Machulski, considered in Poland as the king of comedy, together with their translations into Russian, were used as empirical material. The article proves that in the case of translating verbal comedy, there is often a loss of emotion in viewers who do not know the original language.

The article relates the life and work of a pre-war author who is almost unknown by name, but very popular because of his work, an author of songs, cabaret sketches, and film scrips. He was born in a family of assimilated Jews from Lviv. He made a great contribution to Polish language, both literary and colloquial, by writing song lyrics with phrasings that have become fixed expressions used in communication of the simplest and most universal feelings. Schlechter became a victim of the Holocaust, and his artistic work, which focused on joy and the bright side of life, did not protect him physically and mentally from the Nazi death machine. He was killed in Lviv ghetto, probably in 1943.

The Dramaturgy of Roman Polański’s Two Men with a Wardrobe Marek Hendrykowski’s case study on Polański’s famous student etude Two Men with a Wardrobe reconstructs this wonderful short movie take-by-take: a must for anyone who cares about cinema as art. The young (24 years old) director, together with a team of talented colleagues (cameraman Maciej Kijowski, actors Jakub Goldberg and Henryk Kluba, director’s assistant Andrzej Kostenko and film music composer and jazzman Krzysztof Komeda), demonstrated a very modern way of thinking about the art of the moving image and about the various possibilities hidden in the simple poetics of screen drama. From its opening scene on the beach to the dramatic and nostalgic ending with a comeback to the sea, the film charts two men’s struggles on the difficult path to becoming independent human beings enjoying their own freedom.

The author assumes that the curiosity is a type of human expression. It can manifest in various languages and people’s behaviors, e.g.: verbal, mimic, gestural, costume and also by props, hairstyles, makeup etc. Regardless of differences between particular manifestations of the curiosity it is always semiotic. Freaks, eccentrics and weirdos disturb human community’s order and call into question established norms. They do that by their specific behaviors, appearances and individualism. They rectify, transform and change the social reality. The artistic curiosity not infrequently turn out to be the metaphor of an individual lifestyle (e.g. Witkacy, Dali). Freaks in the world of culture are not either savages or barbarians. They express themselves as well as they express their distance from the cultural system. In connection to this thesis, the author assumes that the curiosity is culture-producing.
