This paper presents a gas turbine combined cycle plant with oxy-combustion and carbon dioxide capture. A gas turbine part of the unit with the operating parameters is presented. The methodology and results of optimization by the means of a genetic algorithm for the steam parts in three variants of the plant are shown. The variants of the plant differ by the heat recovery steam generator (HRSG) construction: the single-pressure HRSG (1P), the double-pressure HRSG with reheating (2PR), and the triple-pressure HRSG with reheating (3PR). For obtained results in all variants an economic evaluation was performed. The break-even prices of electricity were determined and the sensitivity analysis to the most significant economic factors were performed.

Opis:
The electricity production by combustion of organic fuels, especially coal, increases the atmospheric CO2 content, which contributes to global warming. The greenhouse gas emissions by the power production industry may be reduced by the application of CO2 capture and storage systems, but it remarkably decreases the thermal power plant (TPP) efficiency because of the considerable increase of the auxiliary electricity requirements. This paper describes the thermodynamic analysis of a combined cycle TPP with coal gasification and preliminary carbon dioxide capture from the syngas. Utilization of the heat produced in the fuel preparation increases the TPP net efficiency from 42.3% to 47.2%. Moreover, the analysis included the combined cycle power plant with coal gasification and the CO2 capture from the heat recovery steam generator exhaust gas, and the oxy-fuel combustion power cycle with coal gasification. The coal-fired combined cycle power plant efficiency with the preliminary CO2 capture from syngas is 0.6% higher than that of the CO2 capture after combustion and 9.9% higher than that with the oxy-fuel combustion and further CO2 capture. The specific CO2 emissions are equal to 103 g/kWh for the case of CO2 capture from syngas, 90 g/kWh for the case of CO2 capture from the exhaust gas and 9 g/kWh for the case of oxy-fuel combustion.

Opis:
The Rankine cycle steam turbine power plants make a base for world electricity production. The efficiency of modern steam turbine units is not higher than 43–45%, which is remarkably lower compared to the combined cycle power plants. However, an increase in steam turbine power plant efficiency could be achieved by the rise of initial cycle parameters up to ultra-supercritical values: 700–780◦C, 30–35 MPa. A prospective steam superheating technology is the oxy-fuel combustion heating in a sidemounted combustor located in the steam pipelines. This paper reviews thermal schemes of steam turbine power plants with one or two side-mounted steam superheaters. An influence of the initial steam parameters on the facility thermal efficiency was identified and primary and secondary superheater parameters were optimized. It was found that the working fluid superheating in the side-mounted oxy-methane combustors leads to an increase of thermal efficiency higher than that with the traditional boiler superheating in the initial temperature ranges of 700–780◦C and 660–780◦C by 0.6% and 1.4%, respectively.

Opis:
The paper analyzes a new concept of integration of combined cycle with the installation of supplementary firing. The whole system was enclosed by thermodynamic analysis, which consists of a gas-steam unit with triple-pressure heat recovery steam generator. The system uses a determined model of the gas turbine and the assumptions relating to the construction features of steam-water part were made. The proposed conception involves building of supplementary firing installation only on part of the exhaust stream leaving the gas turbine. In the proposed solution superheater was divided into two sections, one of which was located on the exhaust gases leaving the installation of supplementary firing. The paper presents the results of the analyses of which the main aim was to demonstrate the superiority of the new thermodynamic concept of the supplementary firing over the classical one. For this purpose a model of a system was built, in which it was possible to carry out simulations of the gradual transition from a classically understood supplementary firing to the supplementary firing completely modified. For building of a model the GateCycle[TM] software was used.

Opis:
Efficiency and electrical power output of combined cycle power plants vary according to the ambient conditions. The amount of these variations greatly affects electricity production, fuel consumption, and plant incomes. Obviously, many world countries have a wide range of climatic conditions, which impact the performance of power plants. In this paper, a thermodynamic analysis of an operating power plant located in Jordan is performed with actual operating data acquired from the power plant control unit. The analysis is performed by using first and second laws of thermodynamics. Energy and exergy efficiencies of each component of the power plant system are calculated and the effect of ambient temperature on the components performance is studied. The effects of gas turbine pressure ratio, gas turbine inlet temperature, load and ambient conditions on the combined cycle efficiency, power outputs and exergy destruction are investigated. Energy and exergy efficiencies of the combined cycle power plant are found as 45.29%, and 42.73% respectively when the ambient temperature is 34°C. Furthermore, it is found that the combustion chamber has the largest exergy destruction rate among the system components. The results showed that 73% of the total exergy destruction occurs in the combustion chamber when the ambient temperature is 34°C. Moreover, the results show that the second major exergy loss is in HRSC. The results show that the energy and exergy efficiency of the combined cycle power plant decreases as the ambient temperature increases. According to the calculation results, improvement and modification suggestions are presented.

Opis:
The paper describes a combined cycle power plant with carbon capture installation in a post-combustion technology. Carbon dioxide is separated from flue gas by using a chemical absorption method with monoethanolamine (MEA) as a sorbent. Separated carbon dioxide is compressed in order to prepare for transportation to the storage place. This paper identifies the electric efficiencies and other characteristic parameters of power plants before and after implementation of CO2 capture installation, as well as the power plant efficiency drop, and the improvement of ecological characteristics related to the implementation of this installation. The implementation of the installation described herein is associated with the efficiency loss caused by the auxiliary power for additional installations. The CO2 separation installation is powered by heat energy required for reclaiming the sorbent. This energy is taken in the form of steam extracted from the steam cycle, thus reducing the steam turbine power output, while the CO2 compression installation is powered by electric energy.

The paper presents the concept of repowering in existing power plant. Among technologies for existing steam power plants, the hot windbox repowering is the fastest way to respond to the energy demand, improve efficiency and reduce the pollutants emissions. Thermodynamic analysis of power plant model with fossil boiler before and after hot windbox repowering, has been investigated using commercial software. The purpose of this work is to understand and analyze the effect of hot windbox repowering on 387 MW fossil fuel power plant as well as the effect of additional heat exchangers, which have been installed parallel with regeneration system to use the heat of boiler exhaust gases. In this way, after repowering the summary power of power plant in base load is 615 MW, which has been reached adding gas turbine (176.9 MW). To analyze the model, calculations were performed in 3 stages: 1) calculation and comparison of the thermodynamic parameters as well as carbon dioxide emissions of power plant model before and after repowering, 2) analysis of the optimal value of feed water mass flow through heat exchangers installed after economizer, 3) calculation of thermodynamic parameters in values 100%, 90%, 80% and 75% of fossil boiler heat loads.

Opis:
Organic Rankine cycle (ORC) is considered the most used technology in low temperature heat recovery units for cogeneration (electricity and cold). In this study, the effect of the operating parameters, in particular the condensation and the vaporization temperatures on the performance of the cycle are analyzed. In addition, we developed a new combination of organic Rankine cycle and vapor compresion cycle systems to make cogeneration with a negative cold (-10–0◦C), as well with a positive cold (0–10◦C). Three configurations are examined and studied in terms of energy efficiency, namely the performance of each configuration including net power, refrigeration capacity and overall efficiency, the thermal efficiency for ORC and the coefficient of performance for VCC. The used working fluids are n-hexane for the ORC and R600 for the VCC. We also try to apply this new system to have the cogeneration with congelation temperatures. The results show that, for cogeneration with negative cold, among the three configurations that we have developed, the cycle with recovery is preferable in which it has a better energy performance. For a hot spring of 1000 kW, this cycle can provide simultaneously, a maximum net work of 17 kW and a maximum net cooling capacity of 160 kW and an overall coefficient of the order of 0.3. For the production of positive cold, among the three configurations that we have developed, the basic cycle (without recovery) is the most suitable. With the same source of heat a maximum net work of 65 kW and a net cooling capacity in the order of 1000 kW with a global coefficient in the order of 1.05 is obtained. Our system is not only limited to be exploited for a temperature range between -10 ◦C and 10 ◦C, but can also be used with other fluids for lower temperatures (congelation temperatures).

Opis:
This article presents changes in the operating parameters of a combined gas-steam cycle with a CO2 capture installation and flue gas recirculation. Parametric equations are solved in a purpose-built mathematical model of the system using the Ebsilon Professional code. Recirculated flue gases from the heat recovery boiler outlet, after being cooled and dried, are fed together with primary air into the mixer and then into the gas turbine compressor. This leads to an increase in carbon dioxide concentration in the flue gases fed into the CO2 capture installation from 7.12 to 15.7%. As a consequence, there is a reduction in the demand for heat in the form of steam extracted from the turbine for the amine solution regeneration in the CO2 capture reactor. In addition, the flue gas recirculation involves a rise in the flue gas temperature (by 18 K) at the heat recovery boiler inlet and makes it possible to produce more steam. These changes ontribute to an increase in net electricity generation efficiency by 1%. The proposed model and the obtained results of numerical simulations are useful in the analysis of combined gas-steam cycles integrated with carbon dioxide separation from flue gases.

Performance management is one of the most significant strategies in promoting the efficiency of organizations and is highly sensitive. It is important to check the efficiency of combined cycle power plants because of their major contribution to power generation and air pollution. This study was conducted to evaluate the economic and environmental efficiency of Combined Cycle Power Plants (CCPPs). The inputs and outputs required to evaluate the performance of the power plants were determined according to expert opinions. Then, the 7-year statistics and information of the Qom, Neishabour, Shahid Rajaee, Yazd and Kerman power plants were collected as the desired CCPPs in Iran. The Window Data Envelopment Analysis (WDEA) method was used for evaluating the efficiency of the power plants. The 3-year window length showed that most of the power plants were efficient. Only the Rajaee, Neishabour and Yazd power plants were ineffective in some years. The mean efficiency of the power plants in the 4-year window length showed that the plants were efficient from 2008 to 2010.

Opis:
Evaluation of thermodynamic efficiency of a power plant is usually performed using the method of so-called thermal diagnostics, based on energy balancing. Energetic analysis is however suitable only for a quantitative assessment and for comparing similar technologies. In order to properly assess the origins of energy losses in the given system, an exergetic analysis has to be applied. The paper describes the rules of exergetic diagnostics, which greatly extends the potential of classic thermal diagnostics. A calculation example of a combined cycle power plant is included. The example demonstrates the potential of exergetic diagnostics for locating exergy losses and explains the reasons for increased consumption of fuels by comparing two working conditions of the system: reference and operational.
Zaprezentowany przykład obliczeniowy dotyczący elektrowni gazowo-parowej prezentuje potencjał diagnostyki egzergetycznej w zakresie lokalizacji strat egzergii i wyjaśnia przyczyny zwiększonego zużycia zasobów zasilających system poprzez porównanie dwóch stanów: referencyjnego oraz dowolnego stanu eksploatacyjnego systemu.
