    Opis:
    Ukrainian historical fiction of the late nineteenth century is a strategy which outlines the characteristics of national identity. Presence of a woman in such models has a particular semantic role. ln Ukrainian historical novels the feminine role is sometimes projected on the plane of patriarchal axiology and in some cases becomes masculinum under militant discourse of the past. The image of a woman in Ukrainian historical fiction of 1880–1890’s makes it possible to outline the intersection of the colonial and anti–colonial narratives.
    Ukraińska proza historyczna końca XlX wieku jest oryginalną strategią, która określa różne opcje tożsamości narodowej. Obecność kobiety w takich modelach ma wyjątkowe znaczenie semantyczne. W ukraińskiej powieści historycznej kobieta jest często projektowana przez aksjologię patriarchalną, a w niektórych przypadkach ma maskulinistyczne znaki, szczególnie w militarnym dyskursie przeszłości. Obraz kobiety w ukraińskiej prozie historycznej lat 1880–1890 pozwala wyraźnie nakreślić sytuację przecięcia narracji kolonialnej i antykolonialnej.

    The article examines the prose of Taras Shevchenko in the context of a new model of historicism, the formation of a national narrative based on post-colonial rhetoric, speech mimicry, muted resistance to the official imperial discourse. Prose is presented as the most convenient way to develop a specifically politicized language, with the help of which a nation pronounces itself in a narrative, in its emotional matrices, historical reminiscences. The story „Naymichka” is analyzed in the aspect of everyday refraction of history, translation of collective emotional experience, its spatial deconstruction. Melancholy and resentment are considered as narrative formations that shed light on Ukrainian history and the post-traumatic experience generated by it. Emphasis is placed on its inescapability in the conditions of colonialism and hybrid identity. The topological analysis of emotions contributes to the understanding of the national landscape through the prism of the internalization of history in the mental structures of the individual.

    Almayer’s Folly (1896) by Joseph Conrad challenged the conventions of the fictional romance while confronting the need of native-born Malayans and other Asian individuals to find voice and identity in an imperial context. Along with the narrative voice in this text are the many other voices of those who have been colonized. Fidelity to one’s identity and openness to relationships across cultures lies at the crux of this study. Conrad’s critics of the 1950s and 1960s dismissed his first novel as a romance with a weak subplot. However, that subplot, about Almayer’s daughter Nina and her love affair, sets forth moral claims of loyalty and fidelity that must be taken into account. For her relation- ship with a Malay prince expresses a love that is binding and enduring, one that crosses boundaries and divisions and is an apt model for our culturally convergent world. Conrad creates a dialectic of intercultural subjectivities to make a point about identity, loyalty, and self-fashioning. Whereas Almayer is portrayed as foolish and inflexible, his daughter, Nina, faces significant issues of identity, as she has to choose between the traditional, indigenous heritage of her mother and her father’s modern European aspirations. With Almayer’s Folly, Joseph Conrad showed himself to be an international novelist who could develop a story with an inter-racial and intercultural cast of characters.

Chociaż Disraeli wywodził się ze skromnej rodziny żydowskich imigrantów, zyskał początkowo rozgłos jako ekscentryczny dandys i autor popularnych romansów. Później poświęcił się karierze politycznej, ale nadal pisał powieści i traktaty polityczne. Dokonał znaczących zmian w partii konserwatywnej. Ochrona Imperium i interesów brytyjskich na całym świecie należała do jego podstawowych priorytetów. Przeciwnicy Disraelego nazywali go cynicznym awanturnikiem i politycznym szarlatanem, motywowanym pragnieniem spełnienia swoich osobistych ambicji. Analiza jego dokonań sugeruje bardziej ostrożne wnioski. Disraeli, który głęboko wierzył w potrzebę zachowania tradycji i monarchii, posiadał czytelny zespół poglądów i zamierzeń, które wywodziły się z jego interpretacji historii i obserwacji życia politycznego i społecznego Anglii. Inspirował nie tylko wyobraźnię polityczną przyszłych pokoleń konserwatystów, ale także przyczynił się znacząco do wprowadzenia reform spo-łecznych w Wielkiej Brytanii i do rozkwitu Imperium Brytyjskiego.
    This article, which is in the borderland of political science, history and literary studies, focuses on Benjamin Disraeli’s unique and significant contribution to the evolution of the imperial idea. Although Disraeli descended from a modest family of Jewish immigrants, he first gained notoriety as an eccentric dandy and author of popular romances. Later he devoted himself to political career, but still wrote novels and political tracts. He made significant changes in the Conservative Party. Protection of the British Empire and its interests throughout the world belonged to his fundamental priorities. Opponents of Disraeli called him a cynical adventurer and political charlatan, motivated by the desire to fulfil his personal ambitions. An analysis of his achievements suggests a more cautious conclusion. Disraeli, who deeply believed in the need to preserve the tradition and monarchy, had a clear set of views and plans that came from his interpretation of history and observation of the political and social life of England. He inspired not only the political imagination of future generations of conservatives, but contributed significantly to the introduction of social reforms in Britain and to the flowering of the British Empire.
