The article is a Polish translation of a chapter from a book titled Rediscoveries in Art. Some Aspects of Taste, Fashion and Collecting in England and France. The Wrightsman Lectures delivered under the auspices of the New York University Institute of Fine Arts (Cornell University Press: Ithaca, New York 1980; first edition: Phaidon Press Limited 1976) by Francis Haskell (1928–2000), a renowned art historian, the author of classic studies on artistic patronage, the history of taste, and collecting. The subject of the essay is changes in tastes, particularly the increased interest in Italian and Northern European painting at the turn of 18th and 19th centuries and the consequences of this phenomenon for the British and French collections of painting created at that time (as well as the diverse political and social turbulences that occurred in the wake of the French Revolution and the Napoleonic wars).

The article present the classifications of frosts and their regional presence in Poland. It also points to the losses caused by frosts and the frequency of their occurrence. This article is useful especially for the calculation of the rate of insurance collections.

Ochrona i konserwacja zbiorów bibliotecznych zyskała wymiar globalny, stając się kwestią zachowania światowego dziedzictwa kulturowego. Jednym z aspektów ochrony zbiorów jest kompleksowa konserwacja wybranych obiektów, która jest czasochłonna i kosztowna. Celem konserwacji jest powstrzymanie procesów destrukcji oraz przywrócenie obiektom ich walorów użytkowych i estetycznych. O podjęciu zabiegów konserwatorskich decyduje, oprócz stanu zachowania, również wartość historyczna obiektu. Dla każdego przeznaczonego do konserwacji obiektu opracowuje się program prac uzależniony od jego stanu zachowania i charakteru. Z zasady ingerencja konserwatorska ograniczana jest do niezbędnego minimum. Zakres prac będzie inny dla książki, inny dla grafiki czy akwareli, inny dla rękopiśmiennego kodeksu z barwnymi iluminacjami, inny w przypadku pilnej interwencji wobec dużego zbioru. Jednym z aspektów programu ochrony jest kompleksowa konserwacja wybranych obiektów. Posiadanie własnej, dobrze wyposażonej pracowni konserwatorskiej umożliwia wykonywanie wszelkich prac konserwatorskich w pełnym zakresie (poza niektórymi badaniami specjalistycznymi).
Protection and preservation of library collections gained a global dimension, becoming a matter of preserving the world’s cultural heritage. One of the aspects of collection protection is a comprehensive maintenance of selected objects, which is time consuming and costly. The purpose of conservation is to stop the process of destruction and to restore objects to their usability and aesthetics. It is the state of preservation and the historical value of the object that decide about the conservation treatments that are applied. A restoration plan is drawn up for every object, depending on its type and state of preservation. In principle, a conservation interference is limited to a minimum. The scope of work differs depending on the types of documents: books, graphic arts, watercolours, manuscript codes with colourful illuminations. One of the aspects of the protection programme is a comprehensive conservation of selected objects. Your own well-equipped conservation laboratory allows for performing any maintenance work to the full extent (except for some specialized tests).

After World War II Poland became a Soviet puppet state. It enforced serious system changes, including changes in the politics of publishing and education. On October 1, 1951 the Ministry of Culture and Arts published The List of Books Subjected to Withdrawal (Wykaz książek podlegających wycofaniu) and the librarians were appointed by the party authorities as responsible for clearing bookshops and libraries of ideologically harmful books. The article presents the course of the abovementioned action on the basis of Cracow libraries with particular focus on the Municipal Public Library run by Józef Korpała. The party authorities carried out their policy on libraries and librarians ruthlessly and consequently which was shown by the political pressure exerted on director J. Korpała to subordinate to callous rules of censorship

During the period of Stalinism in Poland the catholic clergy was seen by the communist authorities as a covert or overt enemy of the political system of the Polish People's Republic and a rival in the struggle for the rule over people's hearts and minds who enjoyed a huge social authority. The selected memories of priests who were imprisoned for the political reasons during this period were analyzed for the purposes of this article. The motives of book and readership singled out in those publications are an important point of reference for the issue of the functioning of a book in a totalitarian country

Ze względu na wspólną przeszłość, sięgającą korzeniami wieloetnicznej i wielojęzycznej dawnej Rzeczypospolitej, rzeczą naturalną jest obecność licznych poloników w zbiorach białoruskich. Druki te zostają ujawnione m.in. dzięki postępującym pracom nad stworzeniem pełnego bibliograficznego katalogu-repertuaru drukowanej książki na Białorusi (od 1517 r.) oraz bibliograficznego rejestru zabytków książkowych. W związku z tym obszary badawcze polskich i białoruskich bibliologów nierzadko pokrywają się, co sprzyja działaniom zespołowym i projektowym, aktywnie prowadzonym od lat 90. XX w. W artykule przedstawiono liczne przykłady zrealizowanych badań indywidualnych i instytucjonalnych, w wyniku których dokonano rejestracji historycznych księgozbiorów w zasobach białoruskich, w tym zawierających cenne polonika. Efekty tych działań pozwalają na określenie tematyki i kierunków dalszych wspólnych przedsięwzięć badawczych.
Due to the common past, rooted in the multi-ethnic and multi-lingual Polish-Lithu- anian Commonwealth, it’s natural to see the presence of many Polonica in the Belarusian collections. They have been revealed during works on a complete bibliographical catalogue of printed books in Belarus (from 1517), and bibliographical register of book monuments. Therefore, research areas the Polish and Belarusian book scientists overlap quite frequently, influencing positively team and project work, actively pursued since the 90’s of the 20th century. The paper presents many examples of individual and institutional studies, resulting in registration of historical book collections, including valuable Polonica. These effects enable indication of problems and trends in future common projects.

Opis:
Heritage is a contingent concept defined according to identity, power and culture transformations. At the same time, heritage encompasses historical elements that reveal these transformations, whether in an entire society or in a small institution. In every agora, citizens participate in the 'double construction' of their heritage and negotiate the narrative of their history. As small but well-structured and deterogeneous societies, universities have their own codes and conflicts to create and to manage their specific heritage. Furthermore, historically universities are centres for constructing knowledge to produce objects and for constructing objects to (re)produce knowledge. Therefore, the paths of universities and the paths of the material culture of science follow a somehow parallel course and university heritage is a valuable source for understanding the past, present and future of science and technology. Scientific instruments and machines enable historians to study not only academic experimentation and didactics, but also the powerful image of technology, gender construction or international politics. On the other hand, university archives, libraries and spaces are other axes of university heritage and should be considered together as evidence of a same history.

In 1851, Britain lost probably one of the greatest painters of all time: Joseph Mallord William Turner died, whose paintings can instantly be recognised and remain to this day the treasure of nineteenth-century impressionism. The collection of his paintings, now held at the Tate Britain and in the Ashmolean Museum of the University of Oxford, was put together at the time, patiently catalogued and arranged with extreme care through the work of one man: John Ruskin, university teacher, art critic, would-be geologist, and temporary executor of Turner's will. This example may sound completely outdated, and yet I would like to suggest that it encapsulates many issues that need addressing in relation to university heritage today. For this is a story where conservation and the sense of a legacy was crucial, and where the links between university and general access to knowledge had to be firmly established and reinforced both by individuals and by institutions. Without Ruskin and Oxford University and the many schemes developed to properly house the collections of paintings and the numerous drawings of the artist, Turner's oeuvre would probably have been sold and scattered throughout the country or even the world.

The idea of a convenient perpetual calendar emerged in the Middle Ages in geographical areas with limited access to clergymen, who, equipped with liturgical calendars and the so-called Paschal tables (used to set the dates of movable feasts), enforced the Third Commandment on behalf of the Catholic Church. The need for a handy tool that enabled an illiterate user to track the calendar independently arose in remote mountainous areas, cut-off from ecclesiastic outposts by the prolonged winter seasons. For the tools in question, the days of the year were usually carved on wood, and, above or beneath them, special marks were made for days devoted to assorted Catholic martyrs and saints. Each month had a few such festivals, to be 'kept holy' along with Sundays and the movable feasts.

Italy has some of the oldest universities in the world and its university heritage is among the most significant in Europe. Botanical gardens and anatomical theatres developed in fifteenth and sixteenth century and were later introduced in other European universities. In recent years, there has been a growing interest in Italian university heritage, both from the Italian academy, the Italian Council of Rectors (CRUI) and from national and international organisations such as the ANMS (Associazione Nazionale Musei Scientifici), UMAC (the international committee for university museums and collections of ICOM) and Universeum, the University Heritage European Network.

In the Education Faculty at La Trobe University over 300 art works are exhibited around the walls and corridors of the building. This is named the F.M. Courtis Collection after the art educator who acquired the first works in 1958. The purpose of the acquisitions was to build a teaching collection for use by lecturers and student teachers. The collection was developed to provide examples of the stylistic periods in Australian art since European settlement across a range of art media. It was assumed that young people had limited access to quality art in rural regions and that being in daily contact with the works they would come to appreciate art which would then enrich them as teachers. The head of art education was responsible for the collection. Mr Courtis has been succeeded by four other curators in the last half century.

The article comprises a definition of the term “restricted collections” and an enumeration of legal regulations from the period 1944-1955. Mentioned arrangements contained circumscription of securing's policy. The restricting libraries action was held on territory named Ziemie Odzyskane (Recovered Territories), the other type of collections were former manors houses' libraries regardless of storage area. Next paragraphs contain short history of each of five main storage places based in: Kraków, Poznań, Wrocław, Szczecin, Gdańsk i Katowice. Opis:
Jan Smetanski (1881-1959), a Lviv natural historian and a high school teacher, was an avid bibliophile. He assembled a rich collection of 40,000 volumes, which was removed from Lviv after the war and located first in Przemysl and then in Katowice. After the owner died, the collection was dispersed. Some of the books were purchased by the Institute of Zoology of the Polish Academy of Sciences in Warsaw, a part by the Silesian Library in Katowice, a fragment of the collection remained in the possession of the family. The article discusses a fragment of Jan Smetanski’s collection kept in the collections of the Silesian Library.

The article is devoted to the idea of the art gallery that flourished in Victorian Britain. The author describes the social and political background of the phenomenon of a new form of a museum, namely the art gallery which used to be private and popular expenditure on the arts. A rage for exhibitions erupted in nineteenth century Britain. The exhibition was central to the new art museums. These included high-minded historical surveys of world history or world art; trade exhibitions; displays of work by contemporary artists; displays of single paintings; assemblies of works from private collections, held both at the Royal Academy of Arts and in many major towns; everything except single-artist exhibitions which were regarded as vulgarly commercial. Many of the new museums were financed by such events, so that, for example, the new buildings at Kelvingrove in Glasgow were originally built to accommodate a huge popular exhibition. One of the prime purposes of the new galleries was to accommodate annual shows of work by artists, a tradition that had existed since the early nineteenth century. These art museums flourished for only a short time, and their principal legacy in material terms is the large number of well-built structures that was created for them. But the idea of creating a museum that could be enjoyed by all, free of charge, was a worthwhile one, one that has become hugely important in contemporary Britain, and that represents I believe a pioneering ideal.
Artykuł jest poświęcony idei galerii sztuki, która rozkwitła w Wielkiej Brytanii w epoce wiktoriańskiej. Autor opisuje tło społeczne i polityczne fenomenu nowej formy muzeum, czyli galerii sztuki, które były prywatnym, bardzo popularnym sposobem prezentowania sztuki. W XIX-wiecznej Wielkiej Brytanii nastała mania organizowania wystaw, które stały się punktem kluczowym i działaniem priorytetowym dla nowych muzeów sztuki. Dotyczyło to zarówno merytorycznych badań historycznych nad historią świata czy sztuki światowej, jak i wystaw handlowych, pokazów prac współczesnych twórców, pokazów pojedynczych obrazów czy zbiorów prac z kolekcji prywatnych. Wystawiano zarówno w Królewskiej Akademii Sztuk Pięknych, jak i w wielu mniejszych miastach. Wiele z nowych muzeów poprzez tego typu wydarzenia pozyskiwało środki na dalsze działania, np. nowy budynek Galerii Kelvingrove w Glasgow wybudowano by zorganizować tam wielką popularną wystawę. Jednym z głównych celów nowych galerii było pomieszczenie w nich dorocznych pokazów dzieł artystów; tradycja ta istniała już w początku XIX wieku. Rozkwit muzeów sztuki w Wielkiej Brytanii przypada na krótki okres, a główną pod względem materialnym spuścizną po nich jest ogromna liczba solidnych budynków wzniesionych na ich siedziby. Jednak idea tworzenia muzeum, które sprawiałoby radość i byłoby bezpłatne była tego warta i niezwykle ważna dla współczesnej Wielkiej Brytanii. Moim zdaniem, stanowi ona pionierski ideał.

The paper describes the activities, structures and tasks of the Auschwitz-Birkenau State Museum, one of the most important remembrance institutions and the most important Holocaust Memorial in Poland. The short outline of the camp’s wartime history is followed by sections concerning the post-war site’s use and commemoration, the forming of the Museum, concepts of its shape, and contemporary challenges to its activities. The selected Museum’s structures were discussed: the archives, exhibitions, research, collections, conservation and visitor services departments.

Persistent sequences are the core data structure in functional programming style. Their typical implementations usually allow creating infinite streams of objects. Unfortunately, asking for length of an infinite data structure never ends or ends with a run-time error. Similarly, there is no default way to make an effective, O[1] or logarithmic access to an arbitrarily chosen sequence element, even when the nature of the correlation between index value and the sequence element is known. This paper presents a Clojure library that meets these limitations and offers an enhanced version of sequences with a support for effective random access and the ability to ask for an infinite length.

The article is concerned with the history of the public libraries of Lower Silesia in the postwar period. The upper time limit for the presented analysis and reports is the year 1975, when the administrative reform changed the territorial structure of the voivodeship libraries. Within the 30 years after the war, the libraries of Lower Silesia gathered a wide collection of both fiction and non-fiction books, as well as the documents of social life. The structure of the libraries collections was adjusted to the needs of the readers from the different regions of the country. Thanks to those virtues, public libraries had a chance to become an important element of their towns’ cultural system. Accommodation facilities allowed for active participation in education processes and served the development of the social life.
